MSNBC Interactive News Acquires Newsvine

REDMOND — MSNBC Interactive News LLC said it acquired Newsvine Inc., a small Seattle startup that lets visitors read and comment on news stories from mainstream media outlets.

MSNBC, which is jointly owned by Microsoft Corp. and NBC Universal, did not disclose financial terms of the deal late Sunday. NBC Universal is a joint venture of General Electric Co. and Vivendi SA.

Newsvine launched in 2006 and employs six people. Mike Davidson, its co-founder and chief executive officer, said about a million people come to the site each month to read articles and submit their own articles and commentary.

Charlie Tillinghast, president of MSNBC Interactive News, said Newsvine will remain a stand-alone site. MSNBC.com will provide technology resources to the startup and add links to drive more visitors to Newsvine. MSNBC.com gets about 29 million unique visitors a month, he said.

MSNBC also plans to incorporate some of Newsvine's social and community aspects into MSNBC.com, Tillinghast said.

Newsvine will stay in its Seattle offices. Davidson will retain his CEO title and report to Tillinghast.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Nervous, very nervous here, about this move. Great for the founders, I suppose . . . but somehow this being part of MS makes me very shaky.

Well you're in good company. From the comments I've seen a core group of prolific and popular contributors who are here as an antidote to corporate media and sound bite spin, have a similar attitude toward MSM and are accepting this with extreme skepticism.

It's one thing for an indy to take shots at the problem but now, even if its just a technicality, the enemy is within or we have met it and it is us and whatever else says the lines are redrawn and we don't know what it means. I'm pretty sure the folks on all sides of the deal were expecting that as a reflection of what it is we have as unique value and the mainstream antidote factor is too huge to miss in planning.

They already paid me off, I will now only dispense a very watered-down milquetoast version of my progressive news and analysis... sort of like a poor man's Alan Colmes.... and it only cost them $3,700 for me to sign my new agreement.  And really there is only a very short list of topics I cannot go into....

Yeah... it came up with new posts about newsvine upgrade problems (a couple different people wrote me email asking if I was having problems posting stuff since the latest changes to th site....)  I saw the October 7 dateline and I did not even notice the year (2007 not 08) until jusy after I posted the comment!  I knew that an MSNBC deal happened, and I thought this was just a second stage or something.... now I feel silly.

I made up a stupid joke for nothing.
