List of New Cardinals Named by Pope

A list of the 23 new cardinals named Wednesday by Pope Benedict XVI, 18 of whom are under age 80 and thus eligible to elect a future pontiff:

1. Argentine Archbishop Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.

2. American Archbishop John Foley, grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, a lay religious community that aims to protect the rights of the Roman Catholic Church in the Holy Land.

3. Italian Archbishop Giovanni Lajolo, governor of Vatican City.

4. German Archbishop Josef Cordes, who heads the Vatican's charitable works as president of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum."

5. Italian Monsignor Angelo Comastri, archpriest of St. Peter's Basilica.

6. Polish Archbishop Stanislaw Rylko, president of the Pontifical Council for Laity.

7. Italian Monsignor Raffaele Farina, archivist and librarian of the Vatican's Apostolic Library.

8. Archbishop Agustin Garcia-Gasco Vicente of Valencia, Spain.

9. Archbishop Sean Baptist Brady, primate of Ireland.

10. Archbishop Lluis Martinez Sistach of Barcelona, Spain.

11. Archbishop Andre Vingt-Trois of Paris.

12. Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco of Genoa, Italy, who is also the head of the Italian bishop's conference.

13. Archbishop Theodore-Adrien Sarr of Dakar, Senegal.

14. Archbishop Oswald Gracias of Mumbai, India.

15. Archbishop Francisco Robles Ortega of Monterrey, Mexico.

16. Archbishop Daniel DiNardo of Galveston-Houston, Texas.

17. Archbishop Odilio Pedro Scherer of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

18. Archbishop John Njue of Nairobi, Kenya.

The five prelates who are over 80:

1. Patriarch Emmanuel III Delly of Baghdad.

2. Monsignor Giovanni Coppa, Vatican diplomat.

3. Archbishop Estanislao Esteban Karlic, emeritus archbishop of Parana, Argentina.

4. The Rev. Urbano Navarette, a Jesuit, former rector of the Pontifical Gregorian University.

5. The Rev. Umberto Betti, a Franciscan, former rector of the Pontifical Lateran University.
