THE RACE: The race for the Republican presidential nomination in California

___

THE NUMBERS - REPUBLICANS

Rudy Giuliani, 25 percent

Mitt Romney, 13 percent

John McCain, 12 percent

Fred Thompson, 12 percent

Undecided, 22 percent

___

OF INTEREST:

Giuliani's large lead in California has been significantly reduced over the past two months, dropping from 35 percent in August to 25 percent. The former New York mayor's chief rivals for the nomination — Romney, McCain and Thompson — are closely bunched behind him. There is also somewhat greater support for the GOP's second-tier candidates. The combined vote for Mike Huckabee and Reps. Ron Paul of Texas, Tom Tancredo of Colorado, and Duncan Hunter of California amounted to 14 percent in the poll, double what it was in August. The percentage of likely GOP voters who say they are undecided was 22 percent, up slightly.

___

The telephone survey of 315 likely Republican voters in California was conducted by The Field Poll from Oct. 11-21. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5.7 percent.
