Anti-Clinton Video Draws Web Audience

advertisement

WASHINGTON — First came the Orwellian mash up YouTube video that portrayed Hillary Rodham Clinton as Big Brother. Then came a clip of her off-key rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner." Now, a stinging 13-minute video by a bitter Clinton foe is finding its own Internet audience.

The clip, a preview of a longer film by one-time Clinton donor Peter Paul, has scored more than 1.4 million hits on Google Video and about 350,000 on YouTube during the past week. Its popularity has driven it to the top spot on Google Video over the past two weeks.

Paul is a Hollywood entrepreneur, former partner of Spider-Man creator Stan Lee and convicted felon who has sued the Clintons in connection with a celebrity-packed fundraiser he helped organize for her 2000 Senate race. A California appeals court earlier this month ruled that Sen. Clinton should be dismissed from the suit.

But Paul has devoted a Web site to the case and his film, "Hillary Uncensored," in recent days has been touring New England College campuses. On Tuesday, the film is scheduled to be screened at the Metropolitan Club in New York City.

The Clintons have long argued that Paul's criminal record discredits him and in court pleadings have denied Paul's claims against them.

"Peter Paul is a professional liar who has four separate criminal convictions, two for fraud. His video repackages a series of seven-year-old false claims about Senator Clinton that have already been rejected by the California state courts, the Justice Department, the Federal Election Commission, and the Senate Ethics Committee," the Clinton campaign said in a statement.

Paul's anti-Clinton effort is getting help from two technical producers who set up the Web site for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, the 2004 campaign that went after Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry by raising questions about his decorated military service in Vietnam.

Robert Hahn and Scott Swett operate http://www.HillCAP.org, the Web site that Paul set up in 2005 to showcase court documents, videos and news articles related to his lawsuit. The video trailer "Hillary Uncensored," and the schedule for the movie are prominently displayed on the site.

Among those featured in the video speaking in support of Paul is David Schippers, who served as chief investigative counsel for the House Judiciary Committee during President Clinton's 1998 impeachment hearings.

In his lawsuit and in the film, Paul says he spent $1.9 million for the August 2000 Hollywood fundraiser that featured such stars as Brad Pitt, Diana Ross and Cher. Paul maintains he organized the event because President Clinton falsely agreed to assist him in a new venture with Stan Lee after leaving the presidency in January 2001.

Campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission estimated the cost of the event at about $500,000. An ensuing criminal trial of Clinton's former national finance director, David Rosen, on charges that he lied to the FEC about the fundraiser resulted in an acquittal. At the time, Rosen's lawyer said Paul concealed the actual cost of the event from Rosen, a claim Paul denies.

The film also includes a tape recording recently obtained by Paul of Sen. Clinton thanking him in advance for staging the event, which he says is proof that she illegally coordinated the fundraiser with him. The appellate court ruling that dismissed her from the case concluded the call did not amount to new evidence.

The complexities of the case are all fodder for the video clip and the movie, spiced with clips of Hollywood performers.

"Her abuse of her power as reflected in my case should make everybody pause about entrusting her with the reins of government," Paul said in an interview.

Paul is awaiting sentencing on his 2005 guilty plea to charges of stock fraud involving Stan Lee Media, the company Paul had wanted Clinton to join. In the 1970s, he was convicted of cocaine possession and of attempting to defraud the Cuban government of Fidel Castro.

Swett, who is running Paul's HillCAP Web site, said the video has helped drive more traffic to the Web site, but that the activity is far less frequent than it was on the site he operated for Swift Boat Veterans in 2004.

"Then it was in the final months before the election and we're a year out at this point," he said. "There's a lot of complexity to the Peter Paul lawsuit. You have to read through some of the documents to get a handle on it. That was less the case with the charges that the Swift Boat Veterans and POWs were making against John Kerry."

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Mr. Kreep (do you believe it?)

Seriously, do you ever wonder if there is a scriptwriter for these things? Every time I hear the name Dick Armey it still cracks me up.

I seeded a piece on the Peter Paul video last week, as well as the 'Orwellian' video (if that's the one they're referring to) back when it came out. It's actually a take-off on the Apple commercial from 1984.

It will be interesting to see if this gains any traction. I'm not a big fan Hillary, but not a fan of swiftboating either. Thanks for the info on the source.

A sleezy move for sure but it couldn't happen to a more deserving candidate, she gets into bed with dogs.

In the 1970s, he was convicted of cocaine possession and of attempting to defraud the Cuban government of Fidel Castro....

sued the Clintons in connection with a celebrity-packed fundraiser he helped organize for her 2000 Senate race

What part of the whole picture is surprising? You do things for the money sometimes it comes back.

UM and the republicans are different? mccain had a cocaine dealer on his payroll and a male prostitute. No one was convicted of this.. (i guess this time you wont be screaming innocent before proven guilty. And last this is mega mega mega week, the clintons have had a long public history, and strange happenings from whitewater to lawyers killing themselves, surely yall could find something better. Heck the Yu thing is a bit worse.

Fox highered ollie north, who is a felon on 6 counts but was pardoned by the president.. this doesnt negate the fact he was convicted in a court of law of 6 fellonies.
worse than that poindexter, that was convicted of 9 fellonies was put in charge of the now defuncted HS total information awareness agency.. why are we putting fellons in gov? And did they put a drug addict on the supreme court?

Last hilary isnt much differnt than bush.. and i hate them both. But what i hate more than bush or hilary is false outrage while standing on unsubstantiated moral high grounds. Sure be outraged but dont pretend this is some new invention of the clintons.

and now we aired out the partisan BS, lets talk about the actual problem.. our gov is not much differnt than the mob... and sorry to inform you epiphany voting republican wont change this, belvie me we tried, they arent any different.

As a result of what Paul described as anti-Communist and anti-Castro political activities, he directed a fraud on the Cuban government of $8.75 million dollars by selling agents of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro nonexistent coffee. The plan apparently also involved sinking the ship that was to deliver the nonexistent coffee to hide the fraud from Castro and, according to TIME Magazine, to defraud its insurer, but the ship was abandoned in Costa Rica and never sunk. Wikipedia - Peter F. Paul

The Clintons are part of the Iran Contra drug running operations that went into Mena airport and moved the cash through the Rose Law firm where Hillary worked as HUD loans. Bush Sr and Bil the operative pair. It's the point where the Clinton Bush values join forces, not a party line dividing them but a moral one. She's every bit the corporate soldier Bush 1 was, Dubbay is in a league of his own and dirty as the Swift Boaters are, what goes around comes around.

Perhaps that's best answered by a Republican:

© St. Petersburg Times, published September 29, 2000

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the past two years, A. Glenn Braswell has donated thousands of dollars to the Florida Republican Party and George W. Bush.

It turns out that Braswell is a convicted felon who has earned millions of dollars selling questionable pills and potions that claim to cure baldness, prostate cancer, arthritis, heart disease and other ailments. The GOP says it didn't check him out before taking his money.

But why did the Florida Republican Party and the George W. Bush campaign accept $175,000 from a convicted felon?

Florida Republican Party Chairman Al Cardenas says no political party has an investigative unit that tries to figure out who's who.

"We rely on the folks who are raising money," Cardenas said. "Our understanding was that this was a businessman in good standing and we accepted his contribution." (Source)

They may not be guilty of breaking the fine print in the law but they sure as heck blow the spirit of fair play and trust right out the window and that's not in the ads it's in the Congress, on the job performance is an F.

We shouldn't make this about party vs. party. Take the crooked and corporate welfare conduits out of the Capitol, both sides of the aisle. You know, I don't love Hillary Clinton. I think she's a neocon hawk Republican masquerading as a Democrat. I just want to scream when I hear right wing talk radio calling her a liberal. She's nowhere near that.

But I just watched that video, and it just looks like a big bunch of nothing to me. Maybe that's due to my own ignorance. I did catch the charge of a million dollar campaign contribution fraud. But if she's been to court about it, been exonerated, the simple fact that someone is charging she did it doesn't mean she did.

And since the Swift Boats swine are part of this, I just can't set much stock by it. I'd like her to lose fair and square, not because someone's got an axe to grind and a lot of money to grind it with.

If I'm missing something important I won't be surprised -- please clue me in. I'd like to get this right.

There's a real irony to that and there are probably few, true conservatives in what those meat heads call conservative either. It's bad theater and pumped up by the finest minds advertising and strategy can bring together. They sell the spin like they do snack crackers and hair gel, choosing the target market and placements, the tone, the talking points.

No one likes to make the bigger point there isn't anything they touch in Washington isn't disastrous and overpriced and they call names to keep form looking at the simple issues like 50% of the agricultural subsidies go to 22 member districts who sit on the committee and have for a decade.

Fake rage and moral indignation, name calling and media makes it through another cycle where the dead in todays "war" violence are a map with a star rushed by to debate the weighter issues of exorcising the fake skeletons so the real ones stay buried.

Kreep and Co. are legendary for making frivolous accusations. They're actually in potentially deep legal trouble right now for making frivolous claims against Planned Parenthood, facing sanctions totaling over $30,000.

And now that the Swift Boat loonies are involved, maybe there should be a real deep, real drawn-out, ever-so-thorough investigation of their activities. Since we never caught the criminal or criminals who forged a government document and mixed it in with real ones to discredit Dan Rather, I'm guessing the Boaties, Kreep, and this Paul guy might be really nice places to start.

Sanctions for $30,000 is peanuts for this group of stalkers working for the Republican Party and its message of war, fear, and hate. The hate portion of this party is so rampant Republican Congressmen promote their group of liars who include Limbaugh (fake soldiers), Beck, and Coulter whose hate spews unchecked by anyone.

We need a law against lies. While the right to free speech exists, no one should be free to trick the public with lies. State and federal statutes are required, with very heavy fines focusing on these liars incomes and net assets. Without more, our electorate is bombarded by intentionally false statements that are then repeated as fact.

The "Hollywood Gala" scandal is very "old news." This case has been investigated, and investigated, and investigated to death. The fact of the matter is, Peter Paul put this fundraiser together in order to be a big shot player in Hollywood, and in doing so, broke a lot of rules. When he got caught, he cried foul, and then tried to divert the blame to the Clintons among others. Where he is being silly, though he claims he is not being silly, is most people, regardless of party affiliations, know that candidates have very little to do with fund raising. Especially for higher level offices such as congress, senate and president. That is the job of Campaign Committees (RNC/DNC, and the party in general.

Fund raising has become a very big business, and many of the country's most affluent people have some kind of tie to political fund raising, regardless of their politics (Rep, Den, Green, Libertarian, etc).

Many bottom feeders see getting involved with fund raising as a path to greater glory by getting "in" with high roller crowd. Obviously, that is what Peter Paul was doing, showing Hollywood he was a high roller too.

He either ignored good advice or received some bad advice on what he was doing, and he would not be the first person that happened too. Frankly, he would have made better friends and had been more effective if he just invited all those same Hollywood celebrities over to his house, through down some cheap wine, peanut butter sandwiches, and a boom box, and said, "Leave your check at the door on they way out." (Generally speaking, that is what best, most experienced fund raiser moguls do) Trust me, they would all have still shown up and given their money, and he would of spent a hell of a lot less than making a gala out of the whole thing.

The www.hillcap.org link is quoted in the article. It has all the videos, actually better versions than the one on youtube. I would specutlate why the youtube link was not included is for the point of the story, about how may youtube hits the video is getting. on hillcap, you can see the video without causing more youtube hits.

You all appear to be against "Swift-Boating," but don't seem to remember how successful it was (or perhaps you do, thus adding to the ire). Either way, it was successful and if the Democratic primary voters don't fall for it, they should at least recognize that general election voters probably will. Worth mentioning.

Here is the essential difference between the so called Clinton Hollywood Gala and the Swift Boat ordeal. First of all, the Swift Boat commanders had a legitimate argument that had not, until the 2004 election, been properly investigated, and the facts considered. In stark contrast, the so called Clinton Gala has been exhaustibly investigated, and legitimate court findings are in the public record. Peter Paul is wasting his time in an effort to save face, in a very gratuities' manner. I admit freely my bias leans to the left, as stated in my profile, however, I am very open to assertions and charges of misplaced, or even over the top miscarriages of the truth. If the facts pan out, I am with my brothers and sisters of the right, 100 percent, in routing out charlatans, and I believe in this venue, the street goes both ways. Never the less, this Peter Paul story is really a dead horse, as considered on both sides of the aisle, so we must just more forward.

Tell me what the legitimate argument was that the Swift Boaters had.

The point was, the swift boat matter is that the people Kerry served with in Vietnam had not had the opportunity to voice their opinions regarding his service. Admittedly, Kerry too, had his own opinion about their respective service, however, it was very difficult for him to express those opinions without sounding like he was just trying to get back at them. Personally, I feel the whole thing was very ugly pool, and very dishonorable of the Swift boat group in general. I think they did a huge disservice to all the people who serve in the military and could have some far reaching effects on future leaders that served in the military for our country.

Thanks uncleandy. I was afraid you were on board with that debauchery. Glad I asked first!

I have to say that the Swift Boats veterans had had the same opportunity to criticize Kerry as any other veterans get. I've also read that of the men who appeared on those very slick, very professional, very expensive Bush/Rove campaign spots, only one of them actually served with Kerry. The media was saturated with those Swift Boats spots. The voices of the many men who actually did serve with Kerry, who came to his defense, simply weren't heard. I mean, the media glommed onto that like sixty. It wasn't only the paid campaign spots. You heard about it constantly. There is a very interesting comparison between the number of times the "news" referenced the Swift Boats voices and the number of times it had anything whatsoever to say about the stories that George Bush had all these DUI's, had been a serious substance abuser, and had gone AWOL from his Guard unit. Both stories could be 100% or 100% false -- that's not my point. My point is that the media went to bat for Bush against Kerry in a big way -- I guess I should say in a corrupt, dishonest way.

Wonder if we'll ever have reliable network news ever again.

Prospero1, for some reason, the Republicans use the strategy of attacking a person's service to their country, usually something a candidate uses to bolster resume, numerous times, with no shame what so ever. It happened here in Orlando during a congressional race, where the opposing democrat was a police officer, and war veteran, who took 10 bullets to the body, and lived. As admirable as that was, the republican opposition took this aspect of his life, calling him a coward, that he took most of the bullets in the back, running away, non of which was true. However, the candidate in question, had to spend more time explaining this false hood, showing scars, x-rays, other evidence, proving he was not running away, instead of addressing the issues at hand. It is very bad pool, and I really hope the republican voters see it for what it is, a very dirty diversionary tactic.
