Ill. Student Gets Detention for Hugging

MASCOUTAH — Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter. The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

"I feel it is crazy," said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

"I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend," she said.

Megan's mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren't even real hugs — just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.

"It's hilarious to the point of ridicule," Coulter said. "I'm still dumbfounded that she's having to do this."

District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.

It states: "Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."

Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.

"We don't agree with it, but I certainly don't want her to get in more trouble," Coulter said.

The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.

"I'm just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn't be punishing us for hugs," Megan said.

Yes, the administrators are in poor taste, etc. Reason #3 million to homeschool.

You've got to be @!$%#ing kidding me! What the @!$%# is this country coming to? These (stupid) people on the schoolboard are just WAY out of line with this. Just goes to prove that people can't even think for themselves anymore and make a good judgement call. I could see if they were making out or fondling each other, but an arm around the shoulder? A hug? You people are totally @!$%#ed and should not be in any position to influence ANYONE! Morons, total morons...and you wonder why I hate people!

As a teacher -- though thank goodness never in the public school system (I went into university teaching after a single semester of teaching in public schools below college level and swore "Never again!" -- and that was over 30 years ago!) -- I'm SOOOO glad to know "the children are safe."

Let's see if I've got this straight. (I have lived in Asia many years, so am somewhat out of touch -- oops! -- can I say "touch"???) It's bad for a young lady to lightly hug a couple friends. Okay. Are the School Morality Police on hand to bust Mothers and Fathers dropping off and picking up their kids, and hugging them goodbye and hello as they do so? According to the school's rules, those parents ought to be, oh, let's see -- how about tarred and feathered? Shameless parents! Showing affection for their children!

Since I never have had any children, I don't have a dog -- directly -- in this fight. But I sure as heck would like to see every single family affected by the Neo-Nazi rules band together nationwide and file a general class-action suit in the federal courts seeking federal orders for the throwing out of all these stupid new rules to federal review BEFORE being allowed to implement a single one. (There are already rules -- they're called "laws" -- covering issues such as carrying weapons and the like, so no worries there.)

On the rare occasion I visit the U.S., when I dare venture off the family ranch, I am EXCEEDINGLY careful about everything I do or say, for fear of running afoul of the Politically-Correct Neo-Nazi crowd. I have more personal freedom living in a military dictatorship than I feel I do there, and no, I'm not kidding, even factoring in I'm a foreigner in my country of residence. I'm 100% serious.
