On Thursday, Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq, cited a 60 percent decline in violence in the country over the past six months.
A look at U.S. military deaths during this period, according to an Associated Press count:
_U.S. military deaths dropped 63 percent, from 101 in June 2007 to 37 in November 2007.
_U.S. military deaths in Baghdad also have decreased by 78 percent, from 40 deaths in June 2007 to nine deaths in November 2007.
_Deaths from improvised explosive devices (IEDs) continue to be highest incident type but dropped by 72 percent since this summer.
_Other combat related casualties (deaths from small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades, etc.) also dropped by 68 percent.
_Deaths from non-combat incidents, however, increased by 33 percent since June 2007.

Iraqi civilian deaths from war-related violence have dropped 56 percent over the past six months, from at least 1,640 in June to 718 in November, according to the AP count. The month-by-month totals:
