Civil Rights Icon Calls Obama Too Young

ATLANTA — Civil rights icon Andrew Young says Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is too young and lacks the support network to ascend to the White House.

In an interview posted online, Young also quipped that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton has her husband behind her, and that "Bill is every bit as black as Barack."

"He's probably gone with more black women than Barack," Young said of former President Clinton, drawing laughter from a live audience. Young, 75, was quick to follow his comment on Bill Clinton with the disclaimer, "I'm clowning."

Young, a former United Nations ambassador and lieutenant of Martin Luther King Jr., made the comments at an appearance at "Newsmakers Live," an urban media forum that interviews prominent Atlanta personalities and political figures.

Excerpts of the interview were posted on Newsmakers Journal, the Newsmakers' Web site, though the date of the appearance was not included with the video posting. Young had been scheduled to appear on "Newsmakers Live" on Sept. 5, according to a press release.

Repeated efforts by The Associated Press to reach Young were unsuccessful. Obama campaign officials declined Saturday to comment on Young's remarks.

Young's comments were prompted by a member of the audience who inquired about his opinion on Obama's candidacy.

"I want Barack Obama to be president," Young said, pausing for effect, "in 2016."

"It's not a matter of being inexperienced. It's a matter of being young," Young said. "There's a certain level of maturity ... you've got to learn to take a certain amount of (expletive)."

Young went on to say that Obama needs a protective network that he currently lacks — a quality that could hurt him if he were to be elected. He said Hillary Clinton already has that kind of network, including her husband to back her up.

"There are more black people that Bill and Hillary lean on," Young said. "You cannot be president alone. ... To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion. His time will come and the world will be ready for a visionary leadership."

Alright. I think that I became mature when I turned 22. That's probably earlier than many, perhaps even most. Obama is 45 years old. The Constitution says 35. Maybe to a 75 year old, 45 makes Obama a youngin but to half the country, Obama's old.

Oh, and did everyone notice when he viciously conflated Hillary and Bill Clinton? Now, it is possible that he meant that Hillary Clinton had gone with more black woman than Obama, but I doubt it.

Young's Argument (in standard form):

1. Obama lacks experience in taking (explitive)
2. Obama doesn't have enough people like Bill Clinton to lean on
3. In eight years, Obama will be a visionary leader
4. So, Hillary Clinton should be the Democratic nominee

Not exactly a stunning argument for Clinton (and basically points to Obama being the better nominee).

Ratigan, thanks for commenting on this. I thought that Cheney would bring wisdom to the White House with his age, but that was a grave error I hope the country doesn't repeat.

I don't think that Bill Clinton's screwin more brown sugar than Barak is reason enough to pick Hillary over Obama. Andrew Young assumes to much to think Hillary's going to win 8 years in the White House followed by the next liberal president:Barak.

Barak Obama is the very first African-american presidential candidate to have a serious chance at winning the slot. If his fellow "brothers" really cared about progress in their communities, they'd back him. Hillary is just one more white Democrat in a long line which expects Blacks to fall in line behind them. There's not a hill of beans worth of difference between the views of Barak and Hillary, except that Barak is honest. Barak also made it on his own, while Hillary simply rode on Bill Clinton's coat tails, covering his tracks along the way.

But hey, these folks can do what they want, even slecting their next 'benevolent' master.

My Mom always said that, "there is a time to come and a time to go", and I believe she was right. The time has come for new thinking and a new vision for our country. I believe that Barak can bring that to the table, and Andy Young (with all due respect) is a voice from the past and in some ways seems to be stuck there. If Martin Luther King or Coretta Scott King were alive today, I have no doubt that they would be firmly behind Senator Obama.

By the way, Bill Clinton was 46 when he became president and John F. Kennedy was only 43. So much for the argument about age...

Anything is better than the dim-witted war hawks we have now.

As an Atlantan, Andrew Young lost his last bit of credibility to me when he became a shill for Wal-Mart, and couldn't even keep that job for 6 months without a controversy.

The problem is these folks, the Jackson's, Young, Sharpton and the likes are still stuck back in the 90's, when the candidate was Bill Clinton. Failing to let go of the pass and move up to current events and the fact Bill can no long run for the Presidency. So therefore, they're trying elect his business partner Hillary Clinton which politically is a whole different kind of ball of wax.

If they're looking for change, not this first woman President stuff with non-substantive candidate and feel she would be the best representation for people of color, they better look again.

Remember Ron Brown, James McDougal, Vincent Foster, Raiser and his three sons, remember the three strikes rule, remember the crack sentencing compared to cocaine, remember NAFTA, and remember I did not have sexual relations with that woman Monica Lewinsky. Enough already with the Evil Clinton's, people of color cannot afford to listen to these corporate proclaimed black leaders any longer. It's time to look at the facts that speak volumes to the facts this Nation is in need of change, from the President on down.

It's time for new, young and bold leadership all around, out with the old and in with the new.

I thought about mentioning that at one point, but I wasn't near a computer.

It's so odd that Clinton supporters say, "don't hold us accountable for the crimes of the husband." But perfectly ok with, "give us credit for the accomplishments of the husband." This guy sort of summed it up with his "Bill does more black girls than Barack" comment. Which, hey, might be true. Obama is married to a fine looking woman and doesn't need to keep playing the field. We all have our cross to bear.

I shouldn't say "odd" because it isn't. But cognitively challenging at least.

The old guard thought JFK ought to "wait his turn," too. It obviously rankles Clinton, who treats the White House like its her birthright.

Young was certainly a lot more credible at age 47 than he is now. As someone pointed out, he has really lost all credibility he once had. He fails to recognize that a change in leadership style is also important. Hillary Clinton's trustworthiness is questionable. She was behind the Whitewater scandal in the Clinton administration, and in October she said she'd speak to Iran without precondition - three months after she called Obama "naive" for taking that stance. We need something totally different from these foolish arguments being put forth by people like Young, who have become as embroiled in the political machine as much as anyone.

Obama is the only candidate running for president that isn't plagued with political corruption and influences from lobbyists. If we want to give America the change it deserves, Barack Obama is the ONLY answer. Age has nothing to do with this race. And if anyone wants to pull the experience card, we elected (debatable) Bush, who really does not have any experience aside from his Governorship.

The problem is that you all are not understanding what the article mean, in my opinion. This does not mean I have the power to do that, but what I simply understand is that all the people opinion in the world, and you are a proof of this is happening, are manipulated by the media.
This article has a title, OK, it is struggling, cause it has to be like that, but in the truth if you go deeper in the text you see this sentence : "You cannot be president alone. ... To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion " as he precisely said, he is risking his life if is gonna be elected. This is what I wanted to say in the intro of my message, you are missing that.
OK, I'm from Italy but I follow politics stuff and read as you guys about what happens in my country and what happens in the other, and surely sometimes you can have views from the outside and looking outside that other cannot have, immediately.
What this man, Andrew Young, that I really have not a clue of who represent and is, but I read from your posts is not so young anymore: and we have always to learn and listen from everybody young ppl, middle age ppl and older ppl. His view, regretfully is not obsolete...he is maybe right.

He said crucifixion...and somebody of you spoke about Kennedy, and spoke about lobbies, A. Young spoke about not enough network supporting him (and this is important in life as in politics...). This is the problem. (this reminded me some things that still have to be told to the world and to Americans...)

I think his message could be important. He wants to say that America must be ready if Obama is gonna be elected cause if his life during his time of government is going to be armed by someone that has interest that go in a different direction of his "maybe little network" as Young said, well, ....
... America is gonna need to be prepared for anything.

I think that the problem is different, and Young has a "secret message" (cause you understand that sometimes there are words could not be said directly if you do want to be listened and to communicate without bias) under lying his words.

Saying that Barak Obama is too you he mean that maybe America is not ready for this kind of president, and he mean that American people and the world maybe, is still not ready for his election.
He want to tell us we need to get prepared and ready, cause if Obama is going to win everybody will have to support his cause and, what more important, get ready for any ....Revolution....

I think Young is wrong, and Obama is ready for this.

That aside, as someone who is exactly one week older than Barack Obama (we are both 46), I sure get a kick out of it when people talk about how young he is!

This is a misconception, Obama will not be alone...and he would not be this mystical sacrificial lamb that many people of color are setting him up to be. This young, articulate, motivated, aspiring, diligent, pace setter, achiever, hard working, rambunctious, and very electable man has stepped into his calling. Andrew Young was not called, so he can't represent the timing of this revelation given to Barack Obama, only Barack Obama can step into the plan that has been set for his life for such a time as this moment in his-tory...his story.

You referenced crucifixion, well since you use the analogy lets just study that for a moment. Jesus mentioned to the Pharisees you know the old heads similar to Andrew Young, that he had come to fulfil the scriptures. Of course they accused him of blasphemy and were ready to stone him...this man who knew his calling. Imagine if he would have listen to the nay Sayer,s where would we be?

This vision was not given to Andre Young or any of the nay Sayers, it was given to Barack Obama and to whom God gives a vision he gives provision.

Barack will never go it alone my friend and it's ashamed after all this time many people of color are stuck in their own hour glass of the pass paralyzing them from moving forward.

I'm reminded of the saying by the late great Martin Luther King Jr., I like any man would like to live a long life, longevity has it's place, but I'm not concern with that now, for I've been to the mountain and lo I might not get there with but I want you to know that we as a people will get to the mountain top.

Barack is a mountain climber, he knows the risk, he's very aware of the dangers but when you've been given an assignment it becomes the very part of your being, your existence, what you were born to do in this world. His time is now, just as the King's was then and regardless of the nay Sayers he must run his course.

I can only hope people of color will stop all the I'm scared for him and replace it with I'll be praying for him, stop all the his time is not now, and replace it with, it's time for change, and most of all change within our own minds of the possibilities.

I don't need approval from Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, or Andrew Young. All I need to know is this man is qualified and experienced to be the President of these United State of America and the exciting part is not black enough or white enough but man enough to do it!

Ok so let's get ready for the revolution, americans, you got a climber to follow, but, are you ready?
              Fore sure Obama is ready.
The problem then is ok all these words all these discussions and topics but actually will Barack be elected, I doubt seriously on this.
But I'm at the same time really courious on how what is gonna happen before, at the election, and then after the elections...
God bless america, god bless the world.

Andrew Young opened his mouth too soon. What do you mean he's too young? This is exactly what black America needs, a young, intelligent black man, who does not have an angry, hate filled civil rights background but understands being black. That is why Jessie Jackson, Al Sharpton, Colin Powell and such would NEVER, EVER be accepted as President of the U.S. You have too much anger in your hearts from the Jim Crow era! I am 50 years old and black. I lived through all of the B.S. of the late 60's and 70's and saw the indignant things my people went through. White and Black, young and old Americans will accept Senator Barack Obama before they would accept anyone from my, Andrew or Jessie Jackson's time. Face it. You need to support the senator over that lying, deceiving, and back stabbing-witch named Hillary! Andrew Young is jealous and anyone else who is black and doesn't stand behind this man and leans toward Hillary 'The Liar" Clinton is crazy! People need to check their real blackness and stand united and cut out all of the crying and unnecessary whining! This man Barack Obama is going to make history so you need to GET-ON-HIS-TRAIN (or get run over)!
