LUTZ — Mitt Romney's body is a temple, rarely fueled by anything other than his wife's homebaked granola at breakfast, a turkey sub for lunch and a piece of fish or a plate of pasta for dinner.

That doesn't mean he lacks a soft spot for Colonel Sanders.

Driving through central Florida on Saturday, the Republican presidential contender overrode a staff recommendation to eat lunch at a Chili's and instead noshed at a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

His master of spin, spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom, has convinced Romney that fried chicken is fine to eat so long as you remove the skin — heresy to those who know it is the repository of the colonel's secret spices.

Accordingly, Romney entered the restaurant and to a staff surprised by the accompanying photographers and reporters, ordered a No. 3 combo: A white-meat plate with two sides. Romney picked mashed potatoes and gravy, along with red beans and rice.

Afterward, he pronounced the meal a hit, but said it was neither the chicken breast nor the hearty sides that won him over.

"The best part?" he said with a smile. "The biscuit."

I like KFC, too. Doesn't mean I'll vote for Romney.

Figures he prefers "white" meat.
