WASHINGTON — President Bush says Africa has a bright future despite poverty and conflicts across the continent, and the United States is committed to being a partner with Africa.

Bush spoke at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art to preview his upcoming trip to five countries in Africa. Beginning Saturday, he will visit Benin, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ghana and Liberia.

The president called Africa a continent of potential and said that his trip will show how compassionate Americans have been in providing money to fight AIDS and other deadly diseases. He described Africa as a place where democracy is advancing, economies are growing and leaders are meeting challenges with purpose and determination.
