NEW YORK — Kathleen Turner eats out less and often takes mass transit now that she's doing stage work instead of films — and she enjoys getting compliments on the bus.

Turner, who recently directed the comedy "Crimes of the Heart" off-Broadway, said fellow travelers frequently recognize her.

"They do very often. People are so nice. They smile and say, 'You're looking good. I love your work,'" the 53-year-old award-winning actress told Newsweek for editions on newsstands Monday. "This is a very lovely thing to have in your life."

Turner also just wrote the memoir "Send Yourself Roses."

"A lot of it was getting to a certain place in my life where I felt I had 30 years in the business. I think women my age are creating this wave, that society hasn't caught up with yet, being the first generation of women who are financially independent."

She won Golden Globes for best actress for "Romancing the Stone" (1984) and "Prizzi's Honor" (1985), and was nominated for an Oscar for 1986's "Peggy Sue Got Married."

Kathleen Turner is great! She's my favorite Kate after Hepburn and Mulgrew. It's great to see that some stars really are humble and down to earth.
