Obama's Girls Not Fans of Britney, Paris

advertisement

WASHINGTON — Barack Obama says his two daughters are fans of Hannah Montana and Beyonce, but think anything to do with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton is "yuck."

The Democratic presidential contender told celebrity magazine Us Weekly that his daughters, Malia, 9, and Sasha, 6, got to meet Beyonce backstage at a concert and "they just love her to death."

"They're pretty down on Britney and Paris and all of that. They think that's very 'yuck,'" he said.

As for his wife, Michelle, Obama said she has a star crush on Stevie Wonder.

"I've been teasing her because Stevie fell off the stage at one of our events," Obama said. "I said to her, 'This is your favorite performer, and you push him off the stage?' Fortunately, he was OK."

The Illinois senator described himself as a "pretty cool" dad who tries not to embarrass his daughters even when he's dancing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," as he did in October.

Though campaigning keeps him away from his family, Obama hasn't skipped a parent-teacher conference.

"He did miss one of Sasha's dance recitals in December and was broken up about it," Michelle Obama told the magazine. "No one wants to miss 20 6-year-olds in red cowboy hats tapping to 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'.'"

Obama's interview with the magazine hit newstands Friday.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Oh God, now the Rabid Right Wingers and Camp Clinton are going to come and bash his daughters, this is going to get nasty.

What is there to bash about his daughters? I'd say Beyonce/Hana Montana over Brittney/Paris shows good judgment for two little girls. Look at the smile on his youngest daughter. Anyone who can bash her just isn't human.

You seem to be thinking that there would be a rational attack against them. :|

A constant in American politics: the feuds will often be nasty and make little to no sense to anyone with a rational, critical thinking mind.

you have a point there. If either party thought their chances of winning would improve by attacking the children of their opponent, they would do it. I can say this for McCain or Obama directly but for the parties as a whole. There is nothing more important to the parties than winning. The concept of integrity is completely lost.

A lot of Republicans aren't fans of them either... they are pretty much trash.. but I really fail to see how this article is relevant to much anything other than trying to make Obama's daughters look like they have value. Brittany and Paris aren't really icons as they were years ago.

Oh God, now the Rabid Right Wingers and Camp Clinton are going to come and bash his daughters, this is going to get nasty.

Why... there's nothing to bash on here and if there was, why do you think that Republicans would stoop so low as to trash a child? That's pretty ill informed.

Ill informed? hardly. Unlikely, perhaps. I was joking though, it was more of a comment about the venom in this race already. I notice you aren't sticking up for Camp Clinton though, do you think they'll do it? Or is it only above Republicans to trash kids?

I'm not a part of the Clinton Camp, but if I had to conjecture... I dunno. They obviously have nothing here to pull from, but given their track record they might make something up. They've become an un-funny Onion of sorts lately.

Or is it only above Republicans to trash kids?

Well no, it is above most human feeling people to trash kids, irrespective of partisanship. I was just saying that I don't feel that republicans would try and pull any of that with a story like this. I see them staying quiet becuase they back it - or - openly agreeing (as far as Viners go).

This seed has very very little to do with politics outside of the parents simply being. It's more about the girls and what they believe, but I also feel that the seed is a plant. Sort of gives people this image that he is a family man, can take it easy with his kids and does normal 'dad' things. And, I'm not saying he doesn't or that this is some kind of ruse... but really... its normal dad stuff... not news, unless it does have a political agenda and then who really drug the kids into it?.

This is so not political, but I've still gotta respond because my little cousin loves Hanna Montana.

A little Google goes a long way. Miley Cyrus was tussling with her friends at a slumber party and the pictures of it were put on the internet as some sort of lesbian underage soft core porn report. Not to raise support against her, but to garner attention for those who put up the pictures. She has handled it very well by pointing out that adolescent play is not something to be taken in the way it has. And if there was a real story that she was a lesbian, which she isn't, that's no reason to jump on her either.

And Obama clearly stated the stage thing was a joke he used to poke fun at his wife's star crush on Stevie.

I can only offer a suggestion as to what makes her yuck because I haven't asked him myself.

I think she's yuck because of the example she sets for women and girls.
                              Britney's examples:
                              1) Call yourself a virgin and use that to support your role as a role model to young girls even though you make blatantly sexual music videos playing on some of the country's most beloved sex fantasies.
                              2) Get mad when outed by your ex as not being a virgin, while not apologizing for the lie.
                              3) Steal someone else's fiance (with whom she has two kids)
                              4) Get mad at your parents and the people you've paid to help you when they try to help you.

If all her previous problems were because of the mental illness, going back almost ten years, then I suppose the issue needs to be readdressed. If not, she's yuck.

Nope, I'm all for social values or lack thereof. I'm just against laws and country-wide rules that govern someone else's choice because of your values or lack thereof.

My values are why Britney is "yuck." Other's values may lead to a different conclusion. The difference between myself and the brand of far-right I hate to see in office is that I would never consider passing legislation just to keep Britney from being herself.
Kinda like what some want to do for abortion, gay rights, etc. Don't get me wrong. The Britney issue is a speck compared to the importance of the other two. But the idea behind it is that people draw conclusions based on their morals, values, and beliefs. It's just not fair to push your conclusions onto someone else.

If the mental illness is to blame for the lying about being a virgin and stealing someone else's fiance, you can scratch those off the list. But I don't think that'll cover Jared's (and my) opinion that she's a terrible singer.

I think we're having two separate conversations. I haven't said anything about what I think of you.

Being mentally ill has no bearing on what a terrible singer she is. Am I not allowed to say she's a terrible singer because she's mentally ill?

The list I gave as to why she's yuck got considerably shorter once you suggested some of it might be explained by her mental illness. But I still reserve the right to call someone a bad singer and a bad role model, irregardless of her mental illness. She was a bad role model her entire career. The problem she and her family are facing now doesn't change that.

Please explain to me what it is exactly that I said that troubles you so much.

Britney suffers from serious mental illness.

How do you know? Are you a psychologist? Have you analyzed her yourself?

Yeah, I read those same reports.

My questions is, AGAIN, Am I not allowed to call her yuck based on her history because she is now mentally ill?

And what exactly did I say that troubles you so much?

If I am as truly ignorant in my attitude towards the mentally ill, it would help me if you explain what the problem is instead of just shaking your head off to the side. How am I going to improve (and I'm clearly saying that is my intent) if I don't know what behavior or mindset to correct?
