— A storm system moved into the Northeast on Tuesday, bringing with it very messy weather. Rain with scattered thunderstorms spread across the Tennessee Valley, Southeast, the mid-Atlantic region and southern New England.
In particular, severe thunderstorms pounded Kentucky, Tennessee, and northern Georgia. Winds up to 60 to 70 mph downed numerous trees and power lines. A tornado was damaged six homes near Samantha, Alabama.
Snow with areas of freezing rain and sleet fell over portions of the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys as well as the lower Great Lakes and northern New England.
To the west, widely scattered snow showers developed across the Intermountain West and Northern Plains. Portions of the Northern Plains saw snow turning into rain in the afternoon.
Much of the West Coast, Southwest and Southern Plains experienced a beautiful late winter day. Plenty of sunshine helped temperatures climb into the 70s and 80s in Southern California, southern Arizona and Texas.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Tuesday ranged from a low of minus-16 degrees at Ely, Minn., to a high of 84 degrees at Miami, Fla.
