BURLINGTON — Sen. Patrick Leahy is suggesting that Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton abandon her White House run.
The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and six-term Vermont lawmaker said there is no way that Clinton is going to win enough pledged delegates to get the nomination. Leahy told Vermont Public Radio, in a show that aired Thursday, that Clinton ought to withdraw and should be backing Sen. Barack Obama. But Leahy said that's obviously a decision only Clinton can make.
In a statement issued Friday, Leahy — who has endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination — said Obama's lead appears to be insurmountable and that Obama's endorsement by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey is the latest sign of how the race is going.
"Senator Clinton has every right, but not a very good reason, to remain a candidate for as long as she wants to. As far as the delegate count and the interests of a Democratic victory in November go, there is not a very good reason for drawing this out. But as I have said before, that is a decision that only she can make," Leahy said in the statement.
Dodd is saying the same thing.
Let's draw the disanalogy between McCain v. Huckabee and Obama v. Clinton.
1. Because of the rules, it was entirely possible Huckabee could have won; Clinton's chance at winning strains credulity (she need 527 of the 896 available, he needs 396).
2. There were no tie breakers for Republicans (a.k.a. no way to steal it)
3. It was early enough to where conservatives could give thier protest vote to show McCain he'd have to start speaking their language.
4. Huckabee was, in no way, hurting McCain; the opposite may be true. Here, there is serious damage being done to the Democrat's chance in November
Any Clinton supporter now has to resolve to arguments against Obama in order to keep her hopes afloat. This is a bad place to be in, especially when we've got some serious potential gains in the Senate we cannot drag into the mud. It's time we start hearing more Democrats calling on Clinton to exit the race (Dodd, also called on her to leave the race today).
