Carter Hints at Support for Obama

WASHINGTON — Former President Carter wouldn't quite say it, but he left little doubt this week about who he'd like to see in the White House next year. Speaking to local reporters Wednesday on a trip to Nigeria, the former Democratic president noted that Barack Obama had won his home state of Georgia and his hometown of Plains.

"My children and their spouses are pro-Obama. My grandchildren are also pro-Obama," he said at a news conference, according to the Nigerian newspaper This Day. "As a superdelegate, I would not disclose who I am rooting for, but I leave you to make that guess."

Carter's spokeswoman confirmed the remarks.

Asked about the comments, Hillary Rodham Clinton's communications director, Howard Wolfson, said: "Both Senator Clinton and President Clinton have a great deal of respect for President Carter and have enjoyed their relationship with him over the years. And, obviously, he is free to make whatever decision he thinks is appropriate."

Asked if there was concern that Carter would be regarded as particularly influential, Wolfson said Carter is "clearly a distinguished former leader of our party and is a superdelegate. And I'm sure that people will be interested in the choice that he makes. But no, nothing beyond that."

Carter is one of 13 Georgia Democratic superdelegates — elected officials and party elders who have a vote at the national convention this August in Denver and are free to support the candidate of their choice.

Only three of those have not said who they support: Carter, state Rep. Jim Marshall, and former Rep. Richard Ray, who is president of the Georgia chapter of the AFL-CIO.

Among those who have committed, Obama holds a 7-3 lead.

Carter was in Nigeria for a ceremony celebrating a reduction in Guinea worm disease in West Africa.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Obama is very beatable. Hillary has already been picked apart. Barack has avoided much scrunity in the past several months, but the heat is rising and Obama will wilt in the heat.

Uh oh, the same Jimmy Carter who penned the Carter Doctrine which stated the the United States would never allow a foreign country to control the Persian Gulf? Obama better reject his endorsement or he might be seen as pro-Iraqi War.

Carter is the last person I'd want endorsing me...but Obama keeps some strange company. Wright has said far more controversial things about Israel than Carter, but I don't like his attitude toward our ally either.

I keep wondering how Obama really feels about Israel and Jews?

The Elder Statesman climbs aboard, I'm glad he is reading the register of the younger generation in his family. Even Jimmy understands it comes a time where you have to pass of the torch, out with the old and in with the new, what a concept.

It time to get some things accomplished on Capital Hill!

I believe it will actually work.

I think it's wonderful that Jimmie Carter, who is a true Christian and humanitarian, is endorsing Barack Obama. If we dwell on all of the pettiness that the press stirs up, we will lose sight of which candidate is best for this country in these trying times. By the way, I am a registered Republican who voted against Bush in 2004 when I realized what damage he was causing this country. Obama is clearly the right choice for President!

I'll bet Jimmy Carter had a twinkle in his eye when he was saying this.... :)

Ahhh ... it is so good to have such a respected former President revealing his hand.

And come to think about it, he's giving other super-delegates permission to show their hands. The next few weeks should be telling. I suspect we'll be seeing lots more super delegates revealing their support of Obama. It may be the one thing that can convince Hillary that the race is decided.
