A baby with two faces was born in a northern Indian village, where she is doing well and is being worshipped as the reincarnation of a Hindu goddess, her father said Tuesday.
The baby, Lali, apparently has an extremely rare condition known as craniofacial duplication, where a single head has two faces. Except for her ears, all of Lali's facial features are duplicated — she has two noses, two pairs of lips and two pairs of eyes.
"My daughter is fine — like any other child," said Vinod Singh, 23, a poor farm worker.
Lali has caused a sensation in the dusty village of Saini Sunpura, 25 miles east of New Delhi. When she left the hospital, eight hours after a normal delivery on March 11, she was swarmed by villagers, said Sabir Ali, the director of Saifi Hospital.
"She drinks milk from her two mouths and opens and shuts all the four eyes at one time," Ali said.
Rural India is deeply superstitious and the little girl is being hailed as a return of the Hindu goddess of valor, Durga, a fiery deity traditionally depicted with three eyes and many arms.
Up to 100 people have been visiting Lali at her home every day to touch her feet out of respect, offer money and receive blessings, Singh told The Associated Press.
"Lali is God's gift to us," said Jaipal Singh, a member of the local village council. "She has brought fame to our village."
Village chief Daulat Ram said he planned to build a temple to Durga in the village.
"I am writing to the state government to provide money to build the temple and help the parents look after their daughter," Ram said.
Lali's condition is often linked to serious health complications, but the doctor said she was doing well.
"She is leading a normal life with no breathing difficulties," said Ali, adding that he saw no need for surgery.
Lali's parents were married in February 2007. Lali is their first child.
Singh said he took his daughter to a hospital in New Delhi where doctors suggested a CT scan to determine whether her internal organs were normal, but Singh said he felt it was unnecessary.
"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.
Heh, that's really cute. :)
Although, I struggle enough with having one mouth, let alone two.
Welcome to modern India. Reincarnated gods are the main export. Bless the industrial revolution.
That was my first thought Eric.
Although, I struggle enough with having one mouth
My Conversation Tracker feels that pain...
Reincarnated gods are the main export.
Oh, no, they're strictly for the domestic market! Who could afford to export them, with the price of oil and transport where it is today?
(Tongue firmly in cheek)
"I don't feel the need of that at this stage as my daughter is behaving like a normal child, posing no problems," he said.
As a first time father and unqualified doctor, how does one know whether a CT scan is necessary or not? This is a newborn child that requires all relevant examinations, even if ssuperfluous, best to be sure than to be faced with unforeseeable medical complications.
It's not clear if they're well to do - they might not have the money for a CT scan, and are "hoping for the best" when it comes to the life of their child. I notice that Mr. Ram, the village chief, is petitioning the state government to "help the parents look after their daughter". I hope the publicity they get from this AP article helps them get in touch with the relevant medical/aid agencies, and - of course! - my best wishes for little Lali Singh :).
India is the Human World. The Land of the Heart.
All Hail Lord Ganesh, Our Beloved Remover of Obstacles!

Good for him for opting out of the CT scan and resisting influences of the faulty western mindset

No question about that. With a baby with two faces, I am sure it is best to bury your head in the sand and make sure that you don't check anything else that might also be badly deformed like a second stomach.....Yeah great advice Doc....
If it is so then it is by the will of the creator. Also, we shouldn't be messing with natural selection...it's gonna ruin the species.
Survival of the fittest is fine for the animal kingdom, however I find it sad that a person looks at a human life that way the same as the Cro-Magnon did of the Paleolithic era considering the advances that have been made in saving those lives of persons that the creator did make but did not develop correctly.
However messing with "mother nature" has its problems also. I agree..
We are just as much a part of nature as the animal kingdom. We are not better than other animals, even though we think we are. We are all a part of nature and a part of the universe. Nothing more, nothing less.
We need to let nature do what it does, and not try and fight it. It is the only way to find true inner peace and contentness. We are doomed otherwise.
I will keep you in my prayer's then.
I appreciate it.

Attorney! I hope he doesn't sue for copyright infringement.
I could be worse however, you could have both sides suing the other half for copyright infringement....That could be really tough...

The baby, who is yet to be named, was born to factory worker Vinod Kumar and his wife Sushma three weeks ago in northern India and has been drawing a stream of curious observers and others who consider her a deity in this deeply religious Hindu-majority country.

simply amazing , miracle ??? in my opinion yes
hmmm....it's quite intresting if you see....I mean the thing that was shocking was that it is relevant why people would think of her as a goddess. You might call it superstitious, religion or wateva......the whole idea seems to be beautiful now. Because nobody knows the truth...even I don't (thats why am not concluding anything) ..but if we think about it in long terms then it is important for parents to see whether the baby will accept herself the way she is. I just don't want any complications to be created. Firstly, because she is from a relatively not-so-well-off family. Secondly, she is a girl....
Lets see....what happens...Lets all hope for the very best...

Another possibility: Genetic mutation/birth defect, which is much more likely...
They have this amazing thing called 'Culture' over there.
