WASHINGTON — Pope Benedict XVI praised America as a land of opportunity and hope Thursday as he celebrated the first public Mass of his U.S. pilgrimage, but he lamented that the nation's promise fell short for blacks and Indians. Hope for the future, he said, "is very much a part of the American character."
Tens of thousands of worshippers filled Nationals Park on a clear spring day and cheered Benedict as he arrived in a white popemobile, standing in the back and waving. The crowd grew to 46,000, and the demand for tickets doubled the supply, organizers said.
The pope, wearing scarlet vestments, led the service from an altar erected in centerfield of the recently inaugurated baseball stadium. Rows of red-robed church leaders joined him.
In brilliant spring sunshine, the pope walked down from the altar to distribute Holy Communion near the end of Mass.
"Americans have always been a people of hope," he said during his homily. "Your ancestors came to this country with the experience of finding new freedom and opportunity.
"To be sure, this promise was not experienced by all the inhabitants of this land; one thinks of the injustices endured by the native American peoples and by those brought here forcibly from Africa as slaves."
He turned for a third day to the clergy sex abuse scandal that rocked the American church, saying "no words of mine could describe the pain and harm inflicted by such abuse."
He called for healing and reconciliation and assistance to the victims.
Barbara and Michael Loh of Williamsburg, Va., sat alone in the stands taking in the scene. They were among the first to arrive.
"I've been Catholic all my life and ... my dream has always been to see the pope," said Barbara Loh, tearing up.
At 5:45 a.m., more than four hours before the Mass, it was standing-room only on subways. Vendors hawked Vatican flags and souvenir buttons, but there were few takers as people hurried toward the stadium.
For others, there was nothing more important than getting in, and many people without tickets stood outside the subway station with signs pleading for extras.
Patty Trail, 54, pastoral associate at a church in Virginia Beach, Va., drove overnight to bring two priests to the Mass. She didn't have a ticket but said she was happy to at least be in the vicinity of the pope.
"Just to be out here, just to be in the presence," she said. "D.C. feels different."
At the end of the two-hour Mass, Benedict blessed the cheering crowd, some of them waving Vatican flags. Worried-looking papal bodyguards stood close and cleared a way for him as he walked out, while many worshippers tried to shake his hand or touch his robes.
A number of lawmakers who support abortion rights attended the Mass, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. John Kerry, the former Democratic presidential candidate. During the 2004 campaign, several bishops questioned whether Kerry should receive Communion because of his stand on abortion.
Kerry, who took Communion from a priest far from the papal altar, said he didn't think the pope's message would have any bearing on this year's campaign. "It has nothing to do with politics," he told Associated Press Television News.
On Wednesday, Benedict spent the first full day of his U.S. journey sharing a platform with President Bush and laying out his analysis of the American church to the nation's bishops.
Before Benedict's arrival, polls showed most Americans knew little or nothing about him. Those who have watched him so far have found a German-born pontiff who speaks excellent English, appears vigorous for his 81 years, mostly prefers script to spontaneity and displays a keen sense of the critical issues facing his 65-million member American flock.
One of largest questions hanging over Benedict's first U.S. trip as pontiff was whether and how he would address the clergy sex abuse scandal, which has claimed thousands of victims, cost the church more than $2 billion in court costs and settlements and led six dioceses to declare bankruptcy.
The pontiff talked about the scandal early, often and with conviction, although not to the satisfaction of many victims and their advocates.
In an address to U.S. bishops Wednesday night at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Benedict called the scandal a "deep shame." He decried the "enormous pain" that communities have suffered from such "gravely immoral behavior."
He also said the problem needs to be viewed in the wider context of secularism and the over-sexualization of America, and called for "a determined, collective response."
Advocates for victims have complained that no bishops have been disciplined for failing to warn parents and police about abusers.
After his appearance at the stadium, Benedict was to address Catholic educators and meet with leaders of other faiths.

Associated Press writers Victor L. Simpson and Sarah Karush contributed to this report.
The Pope and Bush both need to shut up, neither one of them have ever did anything for this country. Mr. Pope all priest to abuse children, so what type of church is this. This man doesn't mean any thing but to the illegal coming into this country, they want him to tell our government to leave them along and stop trying to put them out. Churches has no business in doing anything with our government. And If there is a God, I am sure he would not like what the Pope and his church has done over the years to so many kids. But the Pope is spreading the words of God, and Bush has talk to God who told him to start a war. It funny I alway felt God was for everyone loving our brothers and sisters, not killing them.
What has the US done for the world mister? a pope at least is always a symbol of hope for a lot of people. I don't think americans have moral authority to say what you say. You complain of illegals because they use your services and your system, but you do not complain about them when you send them to Iraq and other places. If you complain so much about the illegals that go to the US, why does the US army send agents to mexico for recruitment?? (let me guess, you didn't know because your media didn't tell you?) I know it is a problem for you, but don't dare talk as if an average american knew what the word suffering and the word abuse mean! Some americans just make me laugh, I suppose in every country, developed or undeveloped, there is always an ignorant mayority.
A comment like this is definitely done out of ignorance of a human person. In this great country of ours human respect must come first. I will not tell this person to shut up because I have no right to tell anyone to shut up just because I do not agree with their faith, opinion or bad English grammar. I would like to correct this person's statement that all priests abuse children. That is not true and we should always speak the truth. Those who have are less than 1% of all our American priests. Please, state the truth not partial truths. The point about this visit not meaning anything to we, Americans, but only to the illegals. Again how can you make that statement for we American Catholics. We who are descends of immigrants and who are Catholic. This visit mean a lot to us. Please, stop making irrational statements for "all of us Americans".
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all who have made this visit of the Holy Father pleasant. It is good to be Catholic and not just American.
It is my opinion that the people of the United States in general do not like to be subjected and reminded of their past failures on human right issues. But it is very true that the Americas have stolen everything from the Indians and grossly mistreated them, and the slaves to the point of inhumanity. But in their ignorance they will rather forget about the shortcomings of the past - like let sleeping dogs lay - but the Holy Father is all too familiar with the shortcomings and the injustice done to the Jewish people. in the homeland of ours. Don't ever think that the table can turn around again, then how would you feel?
Pope Benedict you are a very knowledgeable and wise person and as is common in the US to say "you hit the nail on the head". God Bless you, Beloved Pope!
After reading many of the posts here, as well as most online postings I truly believe many of you would do well to read Martin Heidegger's thoughts regarding 'idle talk' and 'scribbling' (Being and Time 168). And no, these aren't pejorative terms. And before you go attempting to invalidate this post by reminding everyone that Heidegger was a voluntary and active Nazi (as opposed to Benedict, who was 16 at the time he was constricted) please remember that ad hominem arguments do not hold any weight in logical, rational argument. To those of you who do post intelligent, thoughtful remarks that are actually engaging the issues, it's good to know that there are those who dare to go beyond the surface and superficial that seems to captivate our culture today. Maybe we should be listening to what this pope is saying regarding reason, belief, and discourse instead of dismissing his remarks in toto because of prejudices and presuppositions. If the pope reminds Americans about their past, it is so that we realize where we came from and to know where we are heading.
Goodness, Sister Maria Regina Bracken (message 1.3), you are quick to criticize another poster's grammar, when your own post is grammatically atrocious. The pope is not the holy father. God is the Holy Father. It cheapens the title to bestow it on a sinful man. Yes, even the pope has sinned, I'm sure. The Bible (which Catholics supposedly use) says that "no one comes to the Father [God] but by me [Christ]." It never says anything about going through a pope. Catholicism is man's way of making Christianity conform to man's idea of control and order, bestowing power on human authorities in the name of religion. No one needs to answer to a pope, bishop, priest or any one. Servants of the Lord should teach the Bible, and help the needy - the things that Christ did on Earth. They have no right to command authority, be politically active, or determine how people should worship, or what is a sin. Not even the angels of the Bible demanded the respect that the pope gets!! Despite the Jews' overwhelming desire for Christ to overthrow the Roman government, He did not. He taught in the temple, preached to the crowds, showed mercy, helped the sick, and reached out to those that society rejected. If Christ Himself resisted politics and power, what gives the pope this right?
In the Bible, Paul also talks about future religions that will forbid marriage. A religious leader should have one wife, he says. Catholics forbid their priests to marry, despite the Bible's blessing on marriage, even for religious leaders. Look at the mess that celibacy has caused in the Catholic church. Just another example of how man's rules do not work. Catholics need to return to the Bible, instead of this man-made system of authority and rules.
As many have pointed out, the Catholic church has historically persecuted many. They drove the pilgrims to the Americas. Yes, many churches and religions have erred. It's the political power of the Catholic church that makes its errors so devastating. Politics need to respect and protect every person's right to practice religion: politics should never be controlled by religion. God works by convicting the heart, not by passing laws or wielding political influence. That defeats the nature of religion.
jdl-28...um, WHAT??? All priests do NOT molest children. That is a senseless and insensitive comment. I like Pope Benedict XVI and am impressed with what he's accomplished in his three years as pope. Remember--he had very big shoes to fill with John Paul II. God bless Pope Benedict and the Catholic Church. Both are good at heart!
JLM,
Sir, you need a serious course on either Western history or church history. The Catholic Church did not drive the pilgrims out of England. Even a second grader knows this!!!
I believer if the Pope really wants The Catholic Church to get back on the right path, The Pope must take action against the Cardinals and Bishops that move these pedophile priest from church to church and trying to high them and telling them not do it anymore. I met two of these pedophile priests, but I did not know that at the time, I found out latter when there names came out in the news.
The scary part for my wife and I was we had one them to our home for dinner two times and he even spent time alone with our 9yr old son. The second pedophile priest had time alone with our other son when we move to another parish. I think the people defending the Church should realize how hard its for those who feel betrayed and lie too by those you are to look up to and have faith in.
PS- One of the above pedophile priest I was talking about when he came into our parish he was put in charge of all the youth programs and no one new till his name came out a news. It make you shutter!
In his first public Mass of his U.S. pilgrimage, the pope lamented that the U.S. fell short on its promise for American Indians and black people.
Here's what we're wondering at msnbc.com: Do you think this is the kind of message Pope Benedict XVI should be delivering to the American people?
rather than criticise the US for its alleged treatment of Indians and blacks, maybe he should have apologized for the invasion and destruction of Europe by the Roman Empire.
Here's what we're wondering at msnbc.com: Do you think this is the kind of message Pope Benedict XVI should be delivering to the American people?
My response to you is, why on earth wouldn't it be? I mean, in an era where the most significant questions posed to our supposed leaders deal with Lapel Pins and exaggerated sniper fire, I for one applaud a world leader willing to engage complex issues.
Like it or not, the man has a legitimate point - and at a crucial moment in history when we're supposedly opening up a discussion about race and oppression I think it's remarkably apropos for him to remind his flock that American History is still relevant.
Lord knows I have little love for the pope or the church but I am glad that they are at least urging an engagement with the shadowy underbelly of American history.
No, I think it was very inapproprite, especially in light of all the bloodshed the Catholic church has shed. Whatt gives him the right? He is not GOD
After hearing something like that from such a powerful and well respected man , would one say that the Pope is watching the election process here in America? Could we imply that the Pope thinks " Obama " would be " Our Hope For The Future ? This raises a brow !!
Does the fact that his church has committed atrocity throughout history mean that he somehow is wrong when he mentions in passing that the US has done the same? That's a logical fallacy.
He's admiring our history of freedom?! Let's remember that one of the reasons people came to the Americas was because they were being persecuted by...guess who? Catholicism! The rhetoric has softened, but why? The Vatican doesn't have the political and military power it once had. Our Founding Fathers would roll over in their graves if they saw what was happening today. President Bush calling the pope "Holy Father" is scary. Be careful everyone. No matter how afraid we are of what's happening in the world, we can't compromise our essential principals.
Given the history of the Roman Catholic Church and his personal history in Nazi Germany, methinks he lives in a very fragile glass house for stone-tossing.
In response to Mykola: No, it doesn't make him wrong -- it just makes him a hypocrite. You should note that being a hypocrite doesn't obviate his original point being right -- it just indicates that his actions throughout his life (and throughout the history of the institution he represents) don't really jibe with his "lamenting" the prejudices that have been felt by segments of this country.
I mean really -- this is the same organization that is responsible for "The Spanish Inquisition," the wholesale mistreatment of Jewish people throughout the Medieval and Renaissance periods in Europe, and a whole lot more prejudicial acts which we won't even bother to discuss. And this particular representative of that organization was a member of the Hitler Youth and the Nazi Infantry. Granted, the first was mandatory, and he was drafted into the second -- nonetheless, many of his contemporaries refused both memberships, and in the case of the former, didn't even suffer any consequences for it.
In other words -- he ain't MLK, and his apologia on prejudice rings pretty hollow to me.
I believe that people, in general, do not wish to hear reminders of past transgressions. No one likes to be reminded they did something wrong. Indeed, if the appropriate means have been exercised to avoid making the same mistakes, then teach history, but chastisement must end sooner than later. Most of our major religions teach forgiveness and repentance. The Pope himself suffered transgressions for which he has sought and accepted forgiveness; haven't we all? To continue to focus on deeds that occurred so very long ago is not going to be well received in this or any other country. Still, in our wonderful country, racism is alive and well despite the many of us who strive to destroy it. Alas, it is part of the human nature and a weakness we must always proactively combat. Perhaps this is the spirit underlying Pope Benedict's message.
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" -George Santayana
As a former catholic and altar boy, I am amazed that any catholic living in the United States can remain in the catholic church after this church has spent $2 billion of their offerings to settle child abuse claims due to priests. The bishops and the pope covered this scandal up to protect the 'good' name of the church that is not so good!!!
How sinful does a church denomination have to get before they lose their God-sanctioned authority? The Catholic Church needs to be rejected by every serious Christian in America and the world over. I ask this of all of the millions of catholics in our country -- is your loyalty to Jesus or to a corrupt religious organization? If you are a Christian first, then how can you remain a catholic?
God has raised up thousands of solid, holy, and healthy churches for you to choose that are not Catholic. The Reformation happened 500 years ago. How long do you need to break free from religion and find a real church?
If your doctor is a quack, shouldn't you find a new doctor that is legitimate? Many catholics no longer attend mass. That is just evidence that they are not true Christians. True Christians will find a good church. NOt to mention that if you call yourself a catholic and you don't attend mass, you are condemning yourself to hell. YOur church teaches that missing mass is a mortal sin leading to hell.
How can you be that ignorant!!!
Find a real church. Make a commitment to Jesus. Reject the apostate Catholic church.
A truly remarkable man... a man who has the audacity to lament America for "injustices" while he briefly acknowledges the injustice served upon the little boys who thought they were being led by shepherds of God. Preposterous. As an American who has never owned a slave; never endorsed or condoned slavery; never balked at the expansive land reservations or tax advantages provided to native Americans, I find his comments to be out-of-line and unwelcome.
He forgets his place. He is the leader of Catholics; and is not a world leader or even a visionary. Just because you wear pretentious garb, wave your holy hand; and mutter some unintelligible ancient rites, that does not justify the hypocrisy in your statements. The racial divide is alive and well in America, and Poland, and Iran, and every other country on this planet. What purpose does it serve, other than political, to reintroduce what we already know to be a black-mark in world history? It is ignorant to think that slavery and racism is a solely owned product of America. Ask the Jews who fled Egypt.
History lessons on slavery and encroachment on native-Americans can be found in every History text-book handed out in high school in America. It bears a striking resemblance to the history of the world. It is ... without question, history.
Please, kind sir... save your criticisms and self-importance for your clergy.
Heck no, I don't think the pope should be delivering any kind of speech here or anywhere else in the world. How dare he come to this country and tell us we have fallen short in treatment of the Indians (how about Native Americans) and Blacks . . . duh . . .
How about how the Vatican has protected and never allowed imprisonment for most of the priests that preyed on our young for all these decades? Oh, I know he mentioned it . . . on his 3rd day . . . but, he didn't apologize to us for his staff and his own self in protecting these "childhood thieves" . . . instead stalling with pay offs, attorney fees for statuate of limitation limits or the most despicable thing of moving these men around like the pawns they are, so they wouldn't stand trial. Even to the point of moving them out of the country to protect them from prosecution. How many Europeans do you think have been abused? And, while we're on the subject of catholics . . . why don't the nuns (who give thier lives to their "marriage" to jesus) get a place to retire in the sun? And, he wears RED . . . he shames my favorite color. The religious businesses are no more than another way of controlling people and all about power.
Peace,
Over and out.
NO! Why try to stir up old hatreds? We (and the world) know what has happened in the past. Maybe we should remind the world of how the "CHURCH" played the game during World War II. How does it go "he who throws the first stone"?
I would like to say the the title of the artice "the Pope laments U.S. injustices to blacks, Indians" is very misleading. If the quote given in the article is the only thing the Pope said about blacks & Indians, it didn't seem to me that he was doing anything other than pointing out that the U.S. has this as part of their history. I didn't get that he was "lamenting" current injustices. Later on in the article, the influx of Hispanics and their role in the Catholic church is brought up. He is correct, the majority of the Hispanics in our country are Catholic. I will be the first to admit, that even as a Catholic, I am not well informed about the Pope's views on illegal aliens, immigration or other issues that we as U.S. citizens are currently facing morally and politically. I mainly wanted to let msnbc know that I felt that the title of the article was misleading.
I believe that all races are created equal and that an in-justice was done to Blacks and American Indians however this topic seems to be a festering bull that will not be left alone. In all cultures there are in-justices and even in our own families. Do you keep bringing up the past and keep the wound infected or do you forgive, make reprimand and move on to bigger and better things? I hope you choose the ladder. This is a great example for Christians to learn from. The lesson is, don't put your faith in man, man "will" always let you down. Maybe the Pope should have donated all his proceeds to those he felt were mis-treated, how many millions do you think were spent to receive the Pope in an elaborate fashion?
You realize, of course, that these kinds of comments like Ratzinger's are made to exploit Native and black people (and how timely! given the US presidential election) and are attempts to sucker people into offering themselves (no pun intended!) as these constituencies. He, his institution, and other similar institutions, are well aware of this power and public relations type of ploy. If you take neglected, abused or exploited persons or populations and tell these people or populations that you stand for them, some among those populations will feel that someone is advocating for them, irregardless of whether anyone is, and there will be a (sometimes desperate) hope for reflected power from the exploiting institution. Anyone questioning the false advocacy (and looking at the often brutal and always coercive behaviors that go along with this) is then accused of racism or whatever 'ism' correlates to the population or persons being exploited by the false advocacy, so no one can ever question the so-called legitimacy of the supposed 'advocacy.' You can pretty much then do whatever you want to, with them, and you get more power, power, power.
Given Ratzinger's track record, I would never, ever, believe he is advocating for any group or person. How much more does it take for folks to wake up to this scam? I recommend a book "The Other Side of the Altar" (and I believe the author understates the problems). On another subject: how can folks possibly not look past the sham of an institution that has repeatedly (and currently) called for a complete ban on homosexual participants, when knowledgeable and highly educated sources inside that institution have estimated by survey that 70% of the clergy and female 'clergy' are homosexual (and while not gay myself, I believe gay people should be respected)? Doesn't that tell you that there must be some major institutional corruption, just to cover that up? And you expect them to clean up that institution? Relatives back east all left the Catholic Church when they realized how corrupt the priests (and of course the hierarchy) were. They understood the (brutal) effect on women of the priests' self-interested and corrupt edicts and advice, and they left. The men thought of most priests as laughable, with contempt. We are made of better stuff - just normal, non-corrupt stuff, the stuff one expects to be able to be allowed to function with in the good old USA. Wake up, folks! What we've seen with the pedophile scandal is just the tip of the iceberg.
This is EXACTLY what America needs to hear....you can't heal what you don't acknowledge. Maybe the public will accept the message from HIS mouth (believing he speaks ex cathedra), since he speaks of this land in more endearing terms as a place of hope and opportunity. They sure wouldn't from Rev. Wright, who condemned some of the same sins that America has committed, and got both himself and Barack Obama in trouble politically for it. He spoke (in his entire "controversial" sermon) about how God would do just the opposite of blessing America for acts of atrocity, just as a parent would never reward a child for misbehaviour. Punishment, however, does not signify hate of the chastised child, but, rather, love for that child enough to correct him/her: hence, condemning America for her wrongdoings is NOT unpatriotic. He never mentioned God not blessing America IN GENERAL (though it stands to reason that God generally blesses righteousness over sin, and sin is rampant in America as it is in any nation anywhere in the world. We are not superior or immune in that regard...). It is true that, ironically, while seeking freedom from oppression both physically and spiritually, immigrants to the Americas both oppressed and enslaved others - already here in the lands, and those brought over forcibly. It also continually justifies unjustifiable wars, overrides the United Nations, simply by virtue of being a superpower. We need to keep in mind that every American who did not cross the Mexican or the Canadian border, or who was not part of a Native American tribe, came over here on a boat - not just AFRICAN Americans. We HAVE to remember, then loving move forward in EARNEST, as a "melting pot." Likewise, the RCC needs to do penance for this scandal in the Church, as for the Crusades and Inquisitions, as do Protestants for all their abuses and scandals. ALL victims are entitled to their anger and resentment until healing effectively takes place, whether sexim, racism, or too slow-moving affirmative action, classism and oppression of the poor, ageism, these victims of sexual abuse, etc. Divided - Democratic vs. Republican, Black nationalist vs. neo Nazi skinhead white supremacist, Catholic vs. Protestant, Jew vs. Gentile, rich vs. poor, men vs. women, etc., "us" vs. "them" - we fall...
You guys at Newsvine are missing the point of his homily if this is the question you come up with. THEE message he is bringing to America on this trip is: Wow you guys have done a great job over these last 230 years! America is an example for the rest of the world. He is also bringing a message about relativism. Many people think that the attention he is giving to relativism is the central message of his pontificate. I tend to agree. He is asking us to notice the differences between cultural plurality (which he says that America does well and and is a wonder full example for the world) and relativism. The relativism that he is pointing to is the kind that causes people to become overly individualistic at the expense of the community. I think you at Newsvine would do better to try to help people explore the bigger questions he is asking.
I agree with LookHarder....Many posters (who, it must be stressed - by their own comments show themselves to be extremely biased and either very misinformed or uneducated about the ACTUAL teachings of the Catholic Church) are missing the points Benedict is eloquently and cogently putting forth.
When this pope was Cardinal Ratzinger he was the leader of the sex abuse cover up.
He was appointed by the pope to investigate the entire sex abuse scandal in the church and what did he do? He didn't investigate, he didn't do anything.
For those who have forgotten or never saw this article about the coverup, do a google search with this: Pope led cover-up of child abuse by priests.
In my opinion, the only reason he is talking about the abuse is because he has a guilty conscience.
I don't think that this is a message he should have been delivering. The treatment of the American Indians was appaling but is well in the past. black people have every opportunity and then some in this country and are still apt to hide behind accusations of prejudice. Every man or woman can make their own path and it isn't society but their own choices that holds them back. Enough with the handouts and cries of discrimination.
I believe the Pope delivered an honest message to us all. It is easy for individuals who have never suffered discrimination to pass judgment without hearing the message between the lines. I am Native American and know how we are still treated as well as all people of color. Yes, the past is the past; however, it is not only appalling, it was criminal! I believe since laws have been past for equal opportunity, most individuals now have choices that were not possible before. I am very proud to be an American whose family has served and given their lives for our freedom and country. We have never received handouts and hard working people with many of the same concerns as you.
Thank you! It's about time someone said it. How about the Pope apologize for the crusades and the persecutions of the protestants!
I see ignorance is alive and well. The bigots still don't like to be called what they are. The world knows what this country did to the Native Indians and the Blacks in this country. It has changed some but there is much to be done. Sometimes this stuff sickens my stomach but I have hope that things will really change.
Trying to reclaim reservations because casinos on them are more profitable than those NOT on reservations, is not "in the past." And, for the record, there is very little that black people can "hide behind," in that just changing their names (as so many Jewish immigrants did to successfully assimilate) does nothing to lighten their skin, which, for many, is STILL, an object of discrimination, no matter how defunct you may belive that it has become... But, of course, no one in society holds ANY prejudice at all; that's just a figment of the imagination of some...LOL
I am glad he mentioned just a few good and bad aspects of America's history. So many people (especially in this country) would like to continue to sweep it under the rug; I am sure some would even like to erase the "bad stories" from history books. So, yes, this is the kind of message Pope Benedict XVI should be delivering to the American people. We need to be reminded of our brutal past so it never happens again.
Think this ''POPE'' is really smart ,of course propaganda's ref to the colored '' people is not bad for some more $ ,any way the money don't smell , but I suggest too this POPE to stay in his place and don't put his self in the politics and race, is not his buss anyway about America ,UN Observant ''
Erick I could not understand a word you wrote except for the word "colored".Please tell me that you do not use that word to describe black people or native indians, because if you do you are in for a fight.
Read the entire homily and stop taking things out of context! Is this the American way: to only take in media sound bites and not think expansively and critically? No wonder we're having an education crisis.
I'm sorry, but I think this whole thing with slavery is time to be over. Slavery was over by the time I was born and I'm tired of hearing how I "owe" people. I don't owe anybody anything. Maybe they owe me, I'm the one who can't get help from the state or federal being a single mom having to work two jobs just trying to make it. While alot (I'm not saying all) of the African Americans are getting help and yet live in brand new homes and drive brand new cars and buy expensive clothing...I'm lucky to be able to put enough food on the table for my son and I. All I can say is get the chip off your shoulder it's time for everyone to live for themselves and not for expecting so much for what happened many years ago because I had nothing to do with it.
snuggler, what world are you living in where "alot of African Americans are getting help driving new cars and buying expensive clothing" , please come back to reality. A real misconception that many people have, snuggler Just work hard and provide for your family and stop the silliness of thinking "ALOT" of African Americans get free handouts.
ah Tired, why should I have to be blamed for slavery? While slavery was going on here in the US, my ancestors were living in fear of the Roman Catholic church over in Poland and Russia, where it was believed that the Jews killed Jesus, that the Jews were the cause of everything bad in Europe, etc. As a matter of fact, none of my ancestors came over to America until the 1920's, and one had to escape being drafted into the Polish military in 1917-18 because had he gone in, he would have ended up dead.
Did he call you by name? As long as RACISM exist, so does everything else.
Snuggler
The majority of Americans on welfare are Anglo Saxon's. Read the stats they verify it, so
quit stereotyping African Americans. Stop whining and be grateful that you are blessed to
have your needs supplied without any assistance. We work hard for what we have and I
am sure you do as well.
Peace!!
Snuggler, you don't owe anyone anything, and neither do they owe you, except respect, and freedom from bias, bigotry, and steretypeo-driven racism. LOL. What do you think the mean income is for the average African-American (who, by the way, is not even a home-owner, let alone owner of "brand new home" or cars, for that matter). We tend to get the short/brunt end of the stick when it comes to poverty, recession, etc. Why don't you compare your state to that of other impoverished African Americans, or the upper middle class state of many white people, to that, of those affluent black people you're describing. That would be a more even-handed, appropriate comparison. And, as for expensive clothes and rims on cars, unfortunately, many black people don't realize that investing what little they have in things that depreciate in value, rather than in stocks, home ownership and other things that appreciate in value, only serves to hurt them in the end. So many wear or drive what they are worth, whereas a white family may wear modest clothing, drive a station wagon, but be able to buy and sell the black family, due to income from investments. Seeing what they (many blacks) cruise around town in, can be deceiving and misleading. Most black people aren't like the African American entertainers, athletes, models, etc. that you see on T.V. Please don't be so naive.
snuggler I am so tired of hearing about the holocaust, when will jews get over it?
f0ur million jewish people died in the holocaust but but what never seems to be talked about is that eight million polish people were murdered by the germans in poland
When I see the pope with all this red and gold and this big hat and magical staff, making mystic passes, it's really difficult to take him seriously. It's hard to get past the "costume".
Why should there exist any concern about the truth? There is still a discusion about the effect of slavery on those who were enslaved. It is good to hear the catholic church address the denial of the american dream to a larger american public. We need to clean our house instead of trying to order others in the world about their houses. American cacausians are hypocrites to the world at large. The world sees the injustices and crimes that have been committed against blacks and indians. Maybe america will finally acknowledge and seek to correct the injustices. See affirmative action.
I don't disagree with anything you said there -- I just question whether the Pope is the right person to be delivering that message.
Where was his apology for the prejudices of the institution he represents? For his own foibles in Germany? Instead, he comes here and apologizes for the actions of the American Government? An institution which he has no role in?
If he wants to apologize for things like The Spanish Inquisition, more power to him. But an apology for US policy on Native Americans is outside his bailiwick. Apologizing for things the Roman Catholic Church didn't even take part in is his way of dodging responsibility for the crimes they did take part in, IMO.
Did the Pope mention the Spanish Inquisition or treatment of indigenous poeple all over the world in the name of the Church ???????
No he didn't, did he?
Exactly.
The Church represented by the Pope had apologized for all the things that the Church did wrong, or even haven't done it rightly at the time to prevent such evil to happen ... But I don't see why he have to do it here? WHAT'S THE RELEVANCE HERE? If you come to his face and say, are you sorry for all those bad things that the church did ... without hesitation ... he will say yes! ... I don't see why he have to have a list of things done wrong ... and say it out loud in every of his appearance in the public? ... When you say sorry to your family or friends, do you say sorry again to them everytime you speak to them?
Why does the pot have to be stirred, over and over again. Slavery was bad, yes. But why keep digging it up, and digging it up. No one today is a slave, no one today had a parent or grand parent who was a slave.
Go back 400 yrs and MY ancestors were slaves to European land owners. But I don't keep stirring the pot trying to make trouble where there shouldn't be any.
How about the Pope addressing starving and murdered children throughout the world. Something that is happening now, not something that occurred 200 years ago ...
what is it about slavery and discrimination that bother people so much, we should be able to bring these topics to the table at any given moment, in order to create a difference some of us need to face the truth slavery maybe over, but discrimination is still strong and well alive if a person does want to talk about slavery because it happend so long ago why do we still discriminate, because the essence behind slavery is discrimination it is a sense of inferiority, therefore, I think the pope message is a very good message.
YOU SUMMED IT ALL UP !!! I THINK YOU SHOULD RUN FOR PRESIDENT ! OR BETTER YET VICE PRESIDENT. GO AHEAD LET OBAMA MAKE THE CHANGES NEEDED TO SET AMERICA STRAIGHT AND YOU AND I AS AMERICAN S HELP FOLLOW THROUGH .
We are all in trouble if Obama gets the presidency. And no not because he is African American, but because of some of the things he has said in his speeches. I personally am not happy with any of the candidates that we have. I also agree that discrimination is a problem in this world, but it is not just against African Americans. I used to live in Chicago and was very much discriminated because I was white. There is discrimination where ever you go and it doesn't matter what race, color or creed you are someone is going to be discriminated about. And as for:
snuggler, what world are you living in where "alot of African Americans are getting help driving new cars and buying expensive clothing" , please come back to reality
I am in reality. I have no problem with who has what, but don't come back at me and tell me that "it's your fault and you owe us"...I don't OWE anyone anything except for my son. And when people are living in one state and getting help and having a fake address in another state and getting help there also...yes I have a problem. And yes your right it's not just the African American, it's also any of the other races.
I believe that if we are going to help people then it needs to be for a couple of years at the most to get their training or back on their feet, not for years and years so that they can just keep having babies and getting help (and yes I lost one of my best friends for saying this because she was one that did it.) Last time I saw her she was talking about having another baby because she was about to be put off the system. That is wrong no matter how you look at it.
Why is the holocaust mentioned again and again again??? I say to those of you who keep bringing up the holocaust get over it already the world owes you nothing.
RE: "Pope laments U.S. 'injustices' to blacks, Indians"
What about all the church boys molested and raped by the priests of the Catholic church? Pope Benedict doesn't lament *them*??? Is he trying to distract the public away from the abuses of the Catholic church by putting the focus on American injustices to blacks and Native Americans, in effect sweeping the issue of the sex abuses under the carpet?
He has lamented them and spoken openly about the abuse. He has apologized for all of the weak men that prey on children. They are everywhere, don't you watch dateline? Society is sick and the internet makes it easier and easier. The sex abuse scandal has been wide open for many years now. Give it up!
But that's just it! The title of the article made it seem like the "injustices" were the main part of the Pope's homily. When, the majority of the article mentioned his comments regarding the sex scandals and how this is the 3rd time he has talked about them. I think the title of the article did a major injustice to the Pope's entire message - and then msnbc encourages us to comment about something he spoke so little about.
Your endless coverage of the Pope's visit and his meeting with the malevolent elitist oligarch in our White House is a waste of TV time, insulting to non-Catholics, and an endorsement of a man who suppressed the crime of pedophilia committed by those he leads and has charge of. If he was in charge of a business in the US, instead of the Pope, he'd be in jail. Before becoming Pope and despite his religious rhetoric about humility, he was the head of the vestigial organization once known as the Inquisition. It was still actively persecuting people until the 19th century. It's a tragedy that cable news is more interested in infotainment, propaganda, and the dumbing down of the American populace. It is with despair that I even post this comment because nothing or no one will risk their job to stand for the public's right to know. Whoever may read this: know that you personally are part of the problem that is turning America and perhaps the world into an Orwellian ant farm.
You tell them, Mary. And he's trying to bring back some of the good old days of "the one true church."
The Pope is merely a figure head for the Catholic church. He is a human being & nothing more. If he makes some people happy, good. If he wishes to admonish his fellow church members whether they be parishoners or priests..... well & good. But I don,t think he should admonish this country on what we did or are doing. I do not believe that sexual abuse among priests with young kids is exclusively U.S. problem. If it goes on here, you can well believe it is just as rampant everywhere else. As for wrong doings of past......should we dredge up history of popes of the past? Should we look into history of catholic church itself? Hmmmm.
If you are a Father or Mother of your kids who had converted to Catholic, yes you can dredge up history of the Catholic Church to talk to them, because you have the right to do so.
The Pope is the father of the Catholics, here it happened to be Americans, of course had the rights to speak to American Catholics anything he wants. If you are not an American Catholic, mind your own business, the pope wasn't talking to you.
Shame on the pope and shame on all catholics who still think of the church as a place of peace , hope and , christianity. This pope who speaks of the child abuse cases as a 'badly handled' situation, is the same man , who, as a cardinal, instructed the diocese of american catholics to "keep the child abuse secret until which time the statutes of limitations has expired". This is disgusting. For all those americans who scramble to get a glimpse of this evil in motion i can only say...shame. I am also deeply concerned about his rational to keep this from happening again. The pope and the leaders of the church are about to embark on a crusade of faulting the existance of homosexuals in the church hiearchy as the cause of this abuse. Check the stats, pigs. Pedophiles are very rarely homosexual. They are heterosexual deviants who get off on the smooth skin of the young as a type of familiar, 'female' attribute. It is not a homosexual trait.
Shame on all who take the word of a former nazi monster as the word of hope and peace. The catholic church is no more than a political machine.
When making arguments, please stick to legitimate facts that can be proven. You state that he, as cardinal, instructed american catholics to keep the child abuse secret until the statute of limitations had expired; however I can find no source anywhere that substantiates that claim. By simply placing it in your argument you not only mislead all of the readers, but you cast further doubt over your entire posting. Let us remember that Pope Benedict did not deny any transgressions of the past. His comments were simply comments made about a particular issue. There are countless issues that he could have made comments about on any number of topics. The fact that he did not make comments on those topics does not mean that they are less important nor does it mean that he is not aware of them. For example, and this is simplifying things to the nth degree just to make a point: If it is my brothers birthday and I call him and tell him happy birthday, what I am doing is wishing him well about one particular event, his birthday. I could also say other facts such as "you are my brother" or "the temperature is 64 degrees today," and they would be no less true. By leaving them out, it does not mean that I am not aware of them, it simply means that what I DID say was what I wanted to say. Many people have somebody that they hold in high esteem. The Pope holds a position of importance to many. Thus, his words are relevant. It is not necessary for a statement to be important to all people everywhere before it is made. Thus I think it is perfectly acceptable for him to make the statements he made. Regardless of his past or the Catholic church's past, stating truths about history are relevant no matter who makes them.
SHAME ON YOU. I AM SURE YOUR PERFECT LITTLE VATICAN HAS NO PROBLEMS.
THE U.S. HAS WORKED AND CONTINUES TO WORK ON OUR RELATIONS WITH OTHER NATIONALITIES. WE AS A PEOPLE KNOW THE PROBLEMS THAT WE HAVE AND WILL TRY TO CORRECT ANY INJUSTICES DONE NOW OR IN THE PAST. WE DO NOT NEED YOU TO LOOK DOWN ON US. I THINK YOU HAVE MANY OTHER PROBLEMS THAT YOU AND THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SHOULD BE CONCENTRATING ON.
AS SOMEONE RAISED AS A CATHOLIC I AM ASHAMED OF THE CHURCH AND HOW IT HAS HANDLED THE SITUATION WITH THE PRIEST'S AND BISHOP'S THAT ABUSE CHILDREN. THE ONLY THING THE CHURCH KNOW'S HOW TO DO IS REWARD THESE ABUSER'S BY SENDING THEM TO OUT OF THE WAY RESORT COMMUNITIES. SEND THEM TO JAIL LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND STOP ASKING US TO PAY THE EXPENSE OF COVERING UP FOR THEM. I AM SURE THE 2 BILLION YOU HAVE SPENT DEFENDING THESE MEN COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT ON MANY OTHER THINGS, LIKE STARVING CHILDREN. CLEAN YOUR OWN HOUSE BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT TO CLEAN OTHERS.
Denial of the damage and dehumanzation that was american slavery is the coin of this realm. There is no comparison between your ancestors who left europe to become landowners and the ancestors of american slaves whom just recently were allowed the right to vote. Slavery as practiced in america was nothing like what your european ancestors dealt with. Human being in american slavery were reduced to chattel or objects like a plow.
Dear Terry Price Slavery is Slavery. Weather your tied to a plow or a cross about to be eaten by an animal or spitted from your back side to your mouth it still is bad. While each of us tends to think ours was the worse, it's all bad. However, at some time we have to get over it and stop reliving it or it will eat at you like a cancer and kill you. We as a nation have apologized to Japan for doing something they where going to do to us. If I apologize to every body in the world for every thing that was ever done by a "white" person will it make it go away. NO! Why, because there are allot of people who like to blame others for there lot in life. Please forgive me and lets get on with life
I thout it was a wonderful sermon. Furthemore, I was reminded of Obama's speech on "RACE"
The Pope is a dogmatic and superstitious symbol of a dying cultish faith. He's a figure head given too much weight. Why should the rest of us be inundated with news about his visits and his comments. The idea that Catholicism is the "one true religion" is contrary to everything Christianity is supposed to reresent. Does the Pope ever discuss the Catholic church's attrocities of the past or recent attrocities? No, he makes tiny statements in the press but won't outwardly address how vile his church has been to the general public. The vatican is a disgusting example of religion out of control. No wonder they make no headway with new converts in educated industrialized countries. They've been relegated to spreading they're crap in the western hemisphere's latin nations where they take advantage of the lack of education and the pervasiveness of poverty. They're doing the same in Africa with less success due to the presense of Islam. All in the name of influence, power, and money and nothing to do with God or Christ.
Outsiders can always see the injustices of OUR country and although we are not perfect we are the greatest nation on this planet but so was Rome, Egypt, and maybe a few others from our past. We as Americans better learn from our past not just our past but the past of other great countries. I think that am understanding of Blacks and there religion is fully understandable to me when we still as a country have the blinders on. This country is not an equal opportunity place it is those who have will aways have and there kids will be born into having and they who truly own America will choose to delegate who can get in but never in the inner circle. I think this election is our true test to see if we are on our way and I am sickened by the divisive politics and news coverage that has happened thus far. Rush Limbaugh is a fool and all his followers because they follow as if he is the pied piper leading them to the promise land but unfortunately he's leading them to a society which is doomed for revolution and becoming much like the soviet union. I am a conservative but does not matter about if you are republican or democrat as long as you look out for the best interest of all and how do you balance the scale now after the injustice that has happened. Taxing those who must benefited??? Well I think something has to be done and I appreciate the Pope for bringing this issue to light but this will not get as much time as Rev. Wright will it.... Well prove me wrong.
Wow! The NAZI POPE has spoken...
I THINK IT'S NOT GOOD FORM TO SLAM AMERICA, YOUR HOST. THE POPE SHOULD LOOK NO FURTHER THAN HIS OWN PRIESTS FOR CRITICISM ( SEXUAL ABUSE).
not just sexual abuse.
Was it really necessary for him to bring up the race card? Have we not addressed that issue already?
Are we not still addressing it? He needs to spend more time addressing the abuse caused by his priests to children.
Wonder if the pope is also lamenting the enslavement and brutality perpetrated on the indigenous people of the New World by the devoutly Roman Catholic Spaniards?
It is so sad for those who make judgement against Pope. We human create problems for ourselves not Pope. All that has happened in history is very sad and we all need to recognize that all kinds of acts against innocent comes from evil. No one needs to judge others, because God will one day judge us for what we have done on earth. We need to work together united to put an end to injustice in the whole world. There are no perfect human in this life and injustice comes from our weakness and lack of love, faith and compassion. He who seeks, finds. Lets open our eyes to see, our ears to hear and our mouth to speak truth only. If we focus in the imperfection, we will never solve the problems we human face today in all societies of the world. Of course, and eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth will never end injustice, so lets be smart and work together to end the battle of evil in this earth.
Why don't you send your reply to the Pope.....since you believe in the authority and power of a corrupt church. The Roman Catholic Church is a contrived political invention of a Roman ruler to consolidate his power by merging paganism with nascent Christianity. That it has survived for so long is largely due to the use of violence to destroy dissent, and using coercion to extract obedience to church dogmas and doctrines among the poor and uneducated. This Pope was the head of what was once called the Inquisition before being named Pope.
Mary, please read a history book before making the ridiculous claim that Catholicism arose due to a joining of paganism and christianity under Constantine in 313 AD. The Church was alive and well centuries before that, with all its beliefs intact.
Don't assume that the Christian churches were always of the Roman-Catholic type. Even afterwards, Christians who dissented from Roman-Catholicism were persecuted. Roman-Catholicism was only the first government-sancitioned "Christian" church. Read more history. Please.
I think that the pope needs to stick to delivering messages of religion instead of sticking his nose into politics and very old history. Whatever injustices were done to the various indian tribes have been addressed with massive amounts of money, medical and housing the reguler Americans don't have access to. The same goes for the welfare system for the blacks in this country. They can stay hidden behind the handouts or make something of themselves in this country. The pope needs to clean out all the child molesters priests that plague the Catholic church.
Dan Cantrell do your research before you start rambling on.
Average welfare child is white, has one sibling and unmarried mother, gov't statistics show
Contrary to popular belief, there are more White children on welfare than Black children, according to statistics from the Census Bureau and Department of Health and Human Services.
Nearly 9 million children on welfare in 1995 were White, the statistics show, compared to 4.8 million Black children.
The typical child on Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) is White and lives in the rural South, Appalachia or the downtrodden areas of major cities.
The statistics also show that the average child on welfare is 7 years old, his mother is 29 and single, and the child has one brother or sister.
Their welfare parent qualifies for only the lowest-paying jobs in the workforce.
Despite prevailing stereotype, Whites, not Blacks, collect greatest share of public aid dollars
SAY the word "welfare" and immediately the image of the lazy Black welfare queen who breeds for profit surfaces in the minds of those who have come to believe the hideous stereotype. It is a myth that persists despite government figures and authoritative studies showing that Whites overwhelmingly reap the lion's share of the dole.
tired 268701 says: Nearly 9 million children on welfare in 1995 were White, the statistics show, compared to 4.8 million Black children.
Yes, but let's look at these stats compared to the percentage of the population that each group represents. Whites are about 70%, Blacks about 10% of the overall population. In a total population of 300 million, that means that out of 70% (210million Whites), 9 million White children are on welfare and out of 10% (30million Blacks), 4.8 million Black children are on welfare. Do you get it?
Maybe if the Blacks who are whining about discrimination, who are not raising their children, who are teens having baby after baby out of wedlock, who are participating in crime, would instead LOOK TO THEIR FELLOW BLACKS who have put their nose to the grindstone, gotten an education, who are fully involved in parenting their children, who are maintaining a marriage or at least a long-lasting monogamous relationship for their children to live in, who are living honest, decent lives and contributing to the overall good and benefit of the society, maybe these whiners could better themselves and be happier for it. Whining about slavery and the past and the 'you owe me's" is not going to get you anywhere. Some of your leaders are playing you just to keep you donating money to them!. LOOK TO ROLE MODELS WITHIN YOUR OWN RACE-- THERE ARE MANY GOOD PEOPLE THERE! See what they've been able to do, copy them, and lift yourselves up! If you feel discriminated somewhere, take your time and your money to a place that makes you feel better. Listen to Malcolm X and spend your money with your fellow Black people where you can, and otherwise spend it where people treat you as you should be treated -- courteously.
Pick yourselves up, stop the whining, it may take a couple of your family's generations to 'make it' but having goals is better than sitting around being angry or feeling sorry for yourselves. COPY THE GAME PLANS OF OTHER BLACK PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE IT.
(Please...if Black and Black People are not the right words to say, I apologize...I try to address people in a respectful manner and hope I've not failed to , here)
this is not true...I am white and I was denied benefits in Memphis, TN. The "so-called" counselor took one look at how much/little money I was making working sometimes 40 hours or more per week in order to get by at 7 dollars an hour and she told me, "You make too much money to qualify." She didn't look at or take anything else into consideration except my skin color. You want to talk research and all that? Go out sometime and see who's begging whom for what. Guarantee you you will see more coloreds asking for this and that than non-coloreds. Just the other day a colored asked me for a dang quarter...then another came up to me in a grocery store begging for some money to buy food. Go to 3230 Jackson Ave and do your research there for a day, do a tally and then say what you're saying.
Did you really just use the term "Coloreds"? Priceless. It's absolutely priceless to know that even though I have not one, but three degrees and as a black woman, I'm still seen as "colored". Absolutely priceless.
Dan, do you have any idea how racist this sounds? The welfare system was instituted in this country, not for the poor and underclass/underprivileged, but exclusively for BLACKS, to right injustices from the past with handouts, behind which we hide? That's certainly what you're implying. Why can't we be just trying to truly grant the American Dream for ALL American peoples, whether young or old, black or white or whatever, rich or poor, male or female, by trying our best to make the opportunities as equal for all as possible? Do black people really threaten that much, that they're lazy if they ask for what they've been denied for so long (we may not be in shackles any more, but MLK just died 40 years ago - (hardly eons, not in anyone's ANCESTORS' lifetime) for NONVIOLENT civil protests), undeserving if they receive any, and ungrateful if they receive some but not enough?
