BERLIN — Automaker Daimler AG says its first-quarter profit slipped from last year, when its results were lifted by a one-time gain from the transfer of shares in Airbus parent EADS.

Stuttgart-based Daimler says it earned 1.3 billion euros ($2.03 billion) from January to March compared with 1.9 billion euros in the same period a year earlier.

Sales were up slightly to 23.5 billion euros ($36.7 billion) in the first quarter. That compares to 23.4 billion euros a year ago.

The company's Mercedes-Benz luxury car unit posted a record 17 percent sales increase for the quarter, to 318,300 cars sold.
