LOS ANGELES — Actor Dennis Farina apologized for his arrest at Los Angeles International Airport after a loaded gun was found in his carry-on luggage.
"I apologize to anyone and everyone that I have caused any embarrassment or inconvenience to," the 64-year-old actor said in a statement. "It is my own stupidity to find myself in this embarrassing situation."
When the weapon was discovered at a security checkpoint at about 8 a.m. Sunday, police said Farina told them he had forgotten the .22-caliber handgun was in his luggage.
Farina was booked for investigation of carrying a concealed weapon, said Sgt. Dennis Beacham. When police discovered the weapon was not registered, the charge was upgraded to a felony and Farina's bail was increased from $25,000 to $35,000.
He was released Sunday night after posting bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Web site.
Farina's latest film, the Ashton Kutcher-Cameron Diaz comedy "What Happens in Vegas," opened Friday.
Farina has starred in TV's "Law & Order" series and in such movies "Snatch" and "Get Shorty." The actor is also a former Chicago police officer.
$25,000 bail because he forgot a gun? That he seems excessive.
How do you forget that you have a handgun in your luggage? Of all things to forget....
Farina's bail got upped to $35k when it was discovered that the gun he forgot he had, was found to be unregistered, making the offense a felony.
Don't you feel safer knowing that a well known, wealthy actor with no axe to grind against this country, who made a stupid mistake, was prevented from achieving his objective? - flying home to Chicago.
One can only imagine the look of utter disbelief and amazement on the part of the TSA when they actually 'found' something truly illicit. It must make a change from having us take our shoes and belts off, and not carry liquids, and otherwise treat us like criminals, to actually find a gun.
I'm not saying that Farina isn't a complete idiot for forgetting that he had a gun, but it must be obvious to everyone that he did not intend to do anything with it. How much time and resources have been and will be wasted on this? The fact is that security screening worked, the gun was seized, shouldn't that be the end of the matter?
That's the problem with the excessive size of the government. Frequently common sense has nothing to do with how a law is prosecuted.
We're essentially overcompensating for the threat of terrorism. The interesting thing is, I believe that a while back a government sponsored report indicated that we were essentially not safer now then we were before. It's expensive and inconvenient, and probably drives away tourism. And in the end, the terrorists just switch targets. Assuming they are planning on striking any more major targets.
The sheer fact that he had a gun in his carry-on luggage should be enough to tip you off that he wasn't planning on doing anything. If you intentionally take a gun through security, you know you're getting caught. It obviously was a mistake, albeit a stupid mistake, but a mistake nonetheless.
