Father jailed over daughter's truancy to be freed

HAMILTON — A judge says he will release a man who was jailed last week for failing to make sure his daughter earned her high school equivalency diploma.

Butler County Juvenile Court Judge David Niehaus's decision Friday would let Brian Gegner out of jail if his 18-year-old daughter Brittany attends a GED preparatory class and schedules the test before the next court date.

Gegner received a 180-day sentence for contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a minor.

He had been ordered months ago to make sure his daughter, who has a history of truancy, received her GED — something that hasn't happened yet. His daughter has said it's not fair that her father was punished for her behavior.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Most parent do not have control over their children, but child protection service has taken that away, this girl is 18 and a adult it her choice to do what she want. If you want to put a parent in jail for this than shut your child protection service down.

Does it matted if she get her GED after all our government is allow cheap labor in to take many job, the other is being ship oversea or they have H-1B visa peoples coming in to take our job. Why don't the judges enforce the laws to protect this country from illegal and major crime people.

If this man was Hispanic and illegal he would of never been sent to jail.

This is totally over the top. Whose business is it anyway if someone's kid gets a diploma or not? Yes, it is preferable to success, but obviously the system was not working for the girl and she may have done better with a life coach or counselor or something else. Truancy should not be a crime, just an infraction worth maybe a detention, or suspension, or in-school discipline, not the cops, and courts, and jailtime. (Nice use of tax money, and the guy will probably end up on food stamps or unemployment)

This is unbelievable. When I read it I had to do a double take. Did the judge for get to realize the fact that she is 18, last time I checked 18 was considered an adult. I look back to when I was 18 and thought I knew everything, thank God my family was not held accountable for my behavior or they would probably still be in jail.

If she were still a child I could maybe see this, but even then it would be a bit ridiculous. I agree parents need to be parents and stop shucking the blame on TV, movies, and video games, but that doesn't mean the child should not bear some responsibility for their own actions. And in this case, being she is an adult, it's even more ridiculous.

Aren't kids able to drop out of school at 16? Between that, her now being of majority, and the father having no control of her actual performance come test time, this couldn't be more absurd.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. HOW are you supposed to MAKE your children do anything? Now if your the 'government', of course you MAKE people do things by pointing a gun in their face and telling them do it or else we will kill you which of course is what is behind EVERY law. Don't stop for a stop sign? They will KILL you in the end result. Oh that's ridiculous you say...oh really? Don't pay the fine...then refuse to go peacefully when they set a warrant out on your head and what will happen? All over running a stop sign.
So, in the meanwhile we aren't supposed to spank our children, starve them, lock them up, or torture them into behaving...not that I would, but this horses ass judge puts the guy in jail because he didn't make his daughter get a diploma...I'd say, JAIL FOR THE JUDGE.

HUH? Can someone PLEASE explain to me HOW the father is supposed to MAKE his daughter get a diploma if she doesn't want to? Since he isn't the state, which of course uses a GUN to MAKE us all obey it's idiotic edicts and since he would go to jail if he even THOUGHT about making her do the required deed the way the state goes about making us...All I can say is things are really screwed up these days and I don't know what it is going to take to get these black robed BAAL priests off our backs...but this is the thought I'd leave with...When the government fears the people there is LIBERTY...when the people fear the government there is TYRANNY. My question to you folks is this...when Thomas Jefferson said this quote...HOW do we get the government to FEAR us? HINT HINT...It's in the BILL OF RIGHTS...
Here is a link to a YOU TUBE video that explains it all folks...(you have to fill in the dot and the first part of the link)
