Turkish court to mull head scarf law

ANKARA — A judicial official says Turkey's top court will consider this week whether to cancel a law allowing Islamic head scarves in universities.

Two opposition parties have asked the Constitutional Court to abolish the law. Many secular Turks see the Islamic head scarf as an emblem of political Islam.

The judicial official says the court will likely meet Thursday and could issue a decision the same day. The official was speaking Tuesday on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

A ruling in favor of keeping the law would give a morale boost to the Islamic-rooted governing party.

Interesting developments in Turkey. From the outside looking in it seems to be an attempt to blur the lines between church and state, something previous governments and the military have firmly stayed away from.
How serious an impediment would/could this become to their secular government?

Under the circumstance you describe it seems to me the Turkish military might weigh in as they have in the past and simply dissolve the existing government. I wish them well, the Turks have been staunch secularists so long, in a part of the world where that is uncommon, it would be a shame to see that slip away from them.

Good point, I'd forgotten about the EU proceedings. That is quite a pickle.
