NY — MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann, who spotlights misbehavior nightly with his "Worst Person in the World" recognition, owes New York state for unpaid business taxes, according to a tax warrant notice.
And his conservative counterparts and bloggers are making sure the debt is fodder in the ongoing political commentators' feud.
Olbermann, the host of "Countdown," owes New York $2,269.50, according to a tax warrant obtained by The Associated Press. State Tax and Finance Department spokesman Tom Bergin said the debt recorded against the TV host's Olbermann Broadcasting Empire Inc., based in Los Angeles, is still open.
MSNBC spokesman Jeremy Gaines called it a bookkeeping disagreement between Olbermann's accountants and the state and said it was resolved months ago.
Bergin said the debt could have been resolved recently, but it has not yet been legally "satisfied" and so remains an open case.
The tax debt has been featured on the blog OlbermannWatch.com, which referred to Olbermann as a "deadbeat," and among Page Six items in the New York Post. The tabloid referred to Olbermann as a "professional angry man" who likes tax-and-spend liberals "but didn't pay his own taxes."
Olbermann has named Fox TV conservative pundit Bill O'Reilly the world's worst person more than a dozen times. News Corp., headed by CEO Rupert Murdoch, owns the New York Post and Fox News Channel, among other properties.
I'm not a huge fan of Olberman on the left or people like O'Reilly on the right... pointless partisan hacks.
That said, this is still a joke. OMG! His business has a tax dispute over $2,200... what a deadbeat! yawn. For goodness sake, it's not even Olberman's taxes... it's a corporation. I can't believe anybody on the right could confuse the tax codes for corporations with those of individual citizens. But why let simple things like reasoning and facts get in the way? The lapdogs on the right will eat it up just like the lapdogs on the left will eat up whatever muck Olberman decides to throw in retaliation.
A 'tax warrant' is a yawn to you?
Nunyer...Mathews has morphed into Dobbs and Olberman into O'Reily
Rockford,
Ummm... yes. In the big picture of what is newsworthy... a corporation with a $2,200 tax dispute with a state government is nothing I am concerned with. yawn. Oh noes! but now it's a WARRANT! That infers he's a nasty criminal. again, yawn.
Would you be interested about the State of New York versus the local sub shop for $1,200 in disputed taxes? Or your dentist thinking his practice was overtaxed by $3,000?
If Olberman was pulling some Wesley Snipes routine and dodging huge sums of income tax, then make it a story. This is just typical muckraking.
I live in Upstate NY. I pay $3500.00 in property taxes per year for 1.5
acres. Gas is $4.21 a gallon. Look up the amount of tax NYS adds to
every gallon of gasoline and fuel oil. I believe Upstate NY has 9 counties
in the top 50 most taxed counties in America. I could go on. The point
is I make up for these dead beats not you. Be it $2 or $2,0000,000.
The only muckraking going on with Olberman around here is in my wallet
and up my backside.
You speak as if the man has been convicted of a crime. That is not the case.
First, Olberman isn't even being accused of a crime... a company that he owns is.
Second, would you pay taxes that were unfairly assessed? I'm not saying that is the case here, but the matter is clearly under dispute. I'm willing to give the corporation in question the benefit of the doubt until they have their day in court. Obviously, you are not willing to do the same and have already reached your conclusion. More power to ya, I guess.
Third, this is typical muckracking of a political figure (well, in this case a political commentator, but similar flavor). Going back to the analogy I used previously, if this was a dispute or bookeeping mistake from the local democrat dentist, I highly doubt it would be replublican blog fodder.
I sense that you are talking the political angle on this subject (which I
avoided in my two posts). But, I'll be happy to go that route now.
Yes, Olbermann has not been convicted; but, some person or entity
under him has been judged.
A 'Tax Warrant' is a judgment. It's comparable to a conviction in NYS.
They had they're day in court and they 'Yawned'.
I'm sure you understood that before I just explained it to you.
So I read that you got a 'yawn' from a person who has a
NYS 'Tax Warrant' filed against him/her/it. Frankly speaking…
yawning at a tax warrant is something George Bush would do.
As far as Olbermann goes…he was a below average sports
reporter. I can't remember any spots on ESPN SC that he was any
more than bland. Re-invention of his career as a political analyst…
what a bunch of crap! He was about the 267th person interviewed
for that job. After all the usuals and unusuals…washed up sports
persons were all that were left.
Typical muckracking of a political figure....I say YES!
You are right...I shouldn't over react to the Olbermanns of the
NYS... whats $2200.00 to me.
Hmmm... Well, I have no problem standing corrected if the case has already been decided and Olberman's company still isn't paying. That said... the story didn't really present things that way.
On two occasions the story refers to the issue as an "open case", which I took to mean that the issue had not yet been resolved from the legal standpoint.
I'm hardly trying to defend people and/or corporations cheating their tax bills... but I dunno... I just think this whole story is being blown out of porportion because Olberman in a political figure. I'm not trying to defend this guy, as I don't really share most of his viewpoints. Still, I think this whole thing stinks and it has little to do with $2,200 in taxes... it's typical sensationalized politically driven baloney.
Two Thousand Plus dollars? ...Of course it's some kind of disputed tax issue. If you had said two hundred thousand I would agree that he well may be a tax dodger but to a man with his income two thousand dollars is nothing. He would be wise to get it cleared up, but these constant malcontents (who say nothing of importance and who spread hatred instead of making peace and using the language of reason, wisdom or intelligence} such as O'Reilly; Limbaugh; Hannity; Coulter; Crystal and occasionally Joe Scarborough really need to step back and see what is relevant and helpful versus what is childish and trivial. If I'm going to listen or give credibility to any of these constantly talking heads they need to prove themselves wiser and more mature than I am. My 14 year old makes more sense
than they do. How many words do you think they could utter if they could only speak truth and reason?
I've known both O'Reilly and Olberman since they were 'bit part' reporters in the Boston television screen. Olberman did weekend sports (if you can believe it) and O'Reilly was just a reporter. I liked O'Reilly better as a reporter than whatever it is that he pretends to be now. Olberman is just plain obnoxious.
So he owes a couple thousand. This isn't news, it's gossip at it's worst. Why not complain about a few trillion of your dollars being thrown away over seas? Who ever found this information, must have looked hard to find it. Probably because they are hiding something of their own. We should find out who leaked this information and lets all get down and dirty and find some crap on that newsperson. Sound like fun?
OOoooo. What mortification! The IRS has dunned me for at least that much. Guess what? They were wrong and blowin' smoke.
Besides, aren't the Republicans in FAVOR of less taxes? Hmm. Hypocrisy in action. I'll bet they don't want their own taxes audited. After all, those off-shore accounts and other cheats might just fail to protect.
Olbermann is not the only one with a New York Warrant, but you slimy fox-lovers will give geraldo a pass.

only funny thing about this story is that he calls his media outfit an empire. Look kieth, you got canned @ ESPN and almost took DP-a real media man- down w/you. get a job w/MSNBC which has no relevance outside these lunatics spewing hate even worse than the far right loons. your ratings stink, you stink, and i bet if we could smell you- your fake tan stinks.
Olberman media empire. I hardly think that getting canned from ESPN and almost taking your boy DP down w/ you, and then moving to irrelevant MSNBC constitutes an empire. the only people watching the gloom MSNBC rolls out hate more about life than you do. one question kieth, how many ambiens does it take for you to get to sleep @ night?
