RENO — A San Francisco performance artist was sentenced Friday to as many as four years in prison and ordered to pay restitution for the early torching last summer of the signature effigy of the counterculture Burning Man festival.

Paul Addis pleaded guilty in May to one felony count of injury to property stemming from the burning of the 40-foot icon on Aug. 28 — four days earlier than planned. He was ordered to pay $30,000 in restitution.

Addis, 35, was taken into custody after a hearing this week in Pershing County District Court in Lovelock.

Burning Man organizers rebuilt the effigy in time for it to go up in flames in the ceremonial climax of the annual weekend festival in the northern Nevada desert.

In March, Addis pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts related to an alleged arson attempt at San Francisco's historic Grace Cathedral, according to the city prosecutor's office.

Addis was out on bail in the Burning Man case when police say he was found with an ammunition belt of small explosives outside the Episcopal church. He was sentenced to three years of probation and ordered back to Nevada to face the charges there.

Burning Man, an eclectic art, music and performance festival that draws more than 40,000 people, began in 1986 at San Francisco's Baker Beach and was moved to the Black Rock Desert in 1990.

This guy isn't a "performance artist"!!! Clearly he's an arsonist using "performance artist" to give him a legitimate platform to feed his pathology. Lock him up!!!!

Being an arsonist is not necessarily a pathological issue.

"Pyromania is defined as a pattern of deliberate setting of fires for pleasure or satisfaction derived from the relief of tension experienced before the fire-setting. The name of the disorder comes from two Greek words that mean "fire" and 'loss of reason' or 'madness.' The clinician's handbook, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, also known as the DSM, classifies pyromania as a disorder of impulse control, meaning that a person diagnosed with pyromania fails to resist the impulsive desire to set firesas opposed to the organized planning of an arsonist or terrorist."

This could have been a prank are just a stupid (possibly drunken) decision. I think the sentence was excessive, a fine would have been sufficient.

Clipping to Crime and Punishment, the guy tries to light one fire, then another: hence the harsh sentence? He did actually burn down the Burning Man early, but it was made to burn at a later time.

From the look of those lame-ass tattoos and that face paint, burning down burning man might have been the coolest thing he's ever done.

He set fire to someone else property, right? IF he endangered anybody, charge him accordingly. Take it to trial, if found guilty, have him go to jail, pay a fire appropriate the offsense. Enough said.

Now, I have to say there is some irony there. This makes it kind of funny.

Probably laughed at, given a calender and maybe a history lesson, if the responding officer is smart enough to know U.S. history.
