OMAHA — Lara Jackson has set an American record in the 50-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.

She touched in 24.50 seconds to break the old mark of 24.90 set by Dara Torres at the 2000 trials. Torres finished second in the same heat, and qualified third-quickest in 24.72 for Saturday night's semifinals.

Jackson, a 21-year-old from El Paso, Texas, helped Arizona win the women's NCAA championship this year.

Jessica Hardy was second-fastest in 24.63.
