FORT BLISS — Army officials say a suspicious package that had been found near a gate to Fort Bliss and detonated wasn't dangerous.
Base spokeswoman Jean Offutt says the item was found by military police officers on patrol at about 9 a.m. Monday. It had been resting along a fence near one of the entrances to the sprawling West Texas post just outside El Paso.
Offutt says an Army bomb-sniffing dog alerted its handlers to some sort of explosive scent in the package. Experts detonated the item in a field away from the gate.
No injuries were reported. It's not immediately clear what the item was.
Offutt says the FBI has taken over the investigation.
