WASHINGTON — A lawmaker will seek a broad review of exports to Iran to see whether exemptions to U.S. trade sanctions are being abused. Cigarettes, bull semen and other goods have gone Iran's way as exports grew during President Bush's time in office.
Rep. David Scott, vice chairman of the House subcommittee on terrorism, nonproliferation and trade, said Friday that he will press for a congressional review of sanctions enforcement following an Associated Press investigation that found U.S. exports to Iran rose from about $8 million in 2001, Bush's first year in office, to nearly $150 million last year.
The goods — sent under agricultural, medical and humanitarian exemptions to the sanctions — also included soybeans, medicine and medical equipment, brassieres, musical instruments, cosmetics and military apparel, among other things.
"Once it's been brought to light, then it's our duty to go ahead and move on it and not just stand idly by," said Scott, a Georgia Democrat whose panel is part of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He said he will reach out to Democrats and Republicans for a bipartisan review. "I think this is an issue that the full committee should take a look at."
Scott said he wants to know who is getting licenses to export goods to Iran, what they are shipping and whether the government is making sure it has accurate information about the exports. He said it worried him that the government's own records showed at least $106,635 in military rifles and $8,760 in rifle parts and accessories going to Iran during Bush's time in office, along with thousands of dollars worth of military aircraft parts.
The Bush administration looked into those exports after AP questioned them. It says the rifles and parts actually went to Iraq, and that Iran was erroneously entered on the shipping record. At least $13,000 in "aircraft launching gear and/or deck arrestors," equipment needed to launch jets from aircraft carriers, actually went to Italy, not to Iran as records showed, the administration said.
Scott said he wants to make sure Iran isn't getting U.S. military gear it shouldn't have, if the explanation about errors in the shipping records is accurate, and why no one looked until AP questioned it.
"There's been lax oversight by the administration in this area of exports," Scott said in a phone interview from Georgia. "We agree that there should be some types of exports going in to help the Iranian people with some very life-and-death kinds of situations, such as medicine and food and that sort of thing, but we need to figure out a way to make sure it's not being abused."

Excellent article
Ali,
Glad to see NAFTA is working out well for us.
So what are we getting in return for cigarettes, bras and bull semen?
Oh, what's it called, that black, fluid stuff, they pump up from below...?
Erik,
I've got to wonder about that. I'm not seeing the gas at the pumps going down, or the food at the stores, or the airline tickets or the price of stamps.
The only thing I see going down is my savings account.
I wonder where all the black stuff is truly going?
The market is very nervous, price of oil vary a lot from day to day. Everything is connected. Example: prices of food ore rising, so people want to grow more food. To do that they need artificial fertilizer. But the people who make that stuff need oil, so the need for oil increases, prices go up. So does the price of urea, needed in the production of fertilizer. Then they get some bad news about the US market, that means the need for oil will go down because factories will be needing less. Then there's the fear of war between Iran and Israel. Prices go up. So there are more "up" indicators that there are "down" indicators, but the US economy is so important that any negative figures influence the market significantly. Hurricane season? Watch those prices rise. Lay-offs and fewer cars being made? Prices go down. Actually, the engergy needed to make a car is only 1% of the cost.
Erik,
The hurricane season. When I moved to Florida 5 years ago I found out about that. I went to fill up my car to make sure I had a full tank....just in case....and every gas station was bumper to bumper with cars waiting in line. The police were directing traffic. Grocery stores were running out of food, it was unbelievable. I thought I left all that madness behind when I left Buffalo, New York. It was the same way there when a lake effect blizzard was on it's way.
What's funny is all this takes place days before the expected catastrophe. Then guess what, the blizzard peters out over Lake Erie & the hurricane decides to turn toward Cuba. It's happening now. Hurricane Bertha caused everyone here to snatch up all the food, gas & water 2 days ago. Guess where Bertha is? Petered out in the Atlantic somewhere.
What really burns me up is the way companies take advantage of people by price gouging. It's illegal as hell, here in Florida & the authorities want you to report it but no one gets punished by it. So why bother.
The whole world is kind of a mess right now, isn't it? Think it will ever straighten itself out?
The whole world is kind of a mess right now, isn't it? Think it will ever straighten itself out?
No, I don't think all will be well. As long as the "no-options-are-off-the-table" crowd are running rampant, and people are willing to listen to them, as long as people don't prioritize peace, as long as they are willing to lie, as long as they are willing to spend the lives of others for profits, as long as a 3000 year old document is seen as more important than UN conventions, and are undermining efforts to establish international law for short sighted gains, use more money on arms than on feeding the hungry, as long as torturers claim they are saving lives, I don't think this earth will be a safe and good place.
Erik,
You just made my shoulders slump a little bit more. I think I'll go visit the Optimist Group & see if they can put me back in a better mood.
So we're selling cigarettes to terrorists? Good deal! ;-)
since we cant find and kill them we might as well cancer them to death
Another case of hypocrisy by the Bush administration.
Just like Bush. Says one thing and then does another behind America's back. Good job!
U.S. exports to Iran increased under Bush!! Yeah so, how many jobs were sent overseas under him as well? How many soldiers have died under him? BUSH is a redneck moron.
What they really want is that other countries don't trade with Iran so that the American companies can have the market to themselves. Another technique is to maintain sanctions officially while telling American companies in advance that sanctions will be lifted at a certain date. Thus American companies will be prepared while others are caught flat footed. Non-American companies that do business with Iran are constantly under threat of being declared terrorist helpers. and thus banned from doing business with and in the US and with American companies anywhere. It's a chain reaction.
And of course the companies that probably did trade with Iran were the administration favorites like Halliburton, KBR, Blackwater, etc.
Those numbers may seem small, but military items can sell for pennies on the dollar compared with what the Pentagon paid. Last year, federal agents seized four F-14 fighter jets sold to domestic buyers by an officer at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, Calif., for $2,000 to $4,000 each, with proceeds benefiting a squadron recreation fund. When F-14s were new, they cost roughly $38 million each.
Wow! That seems like a pretty solid deal for an F-14. I'm gonna check out ebay!
"Szubin said it was unlikely exports of military gear occurred". We're expected to believe this in spite of the fact that the military recently flew nuclear weapons across the country and didn't even know it. Right!
Ah, our government at work...again.
The global economy is becoming increasingly capitalistic despite the best efforts of governments to stop it. Trading commodities is good for Iran and the U.S. Trading weapons... well, that's a different story.
What a shame that we now expect our own government to be as corrupt as the mafia..This is another reason why you can not trust this government. If I hear any report from this group, my first thought is what lies are they spinning now.
It isn't Bush; loyalty, ideology, and ethics be damned as long as there's profit to be made.
MSNBC is so far left it makes me want to puke. I cannot believe that this article is even hinting that the Bush Administration is responsible for shipments being sent to Iran. What does President Bush have to do? Stand in front of the docks and jump in front of the ships so they don't leave port? It is not his fault that American companies like GE are so greedy that they will do business with anyone regardless of who it hurts as long as they make a buck. I wonder if MSNBC will go back to the Clinton years and do a report of how many shipments were being made to Afghanistan or Iran even as they were attacking us then?
it seems to me companies such as 'GE" which you failed to mention need to get their priority straight and stop doing business with IRAN...It's these companies not the government....We can stop it if We the people, just stopped buying their products. I have already sent an E-mail to GE concerning this, and my next purchase will not be a "GE" product...
War is business and tabacco industry always makes biggest profits during war times. And trusting our politicians not to send our kids to die for someone`s profit is a wish.I`d rather pay $50.00 a gallon than see another limbless young soldier who was told, we are bringing "democracy" to middle east.Instead of telling them AMOCO funds this war too, so they could get richer and you should be happy with $35,000 a year and maybe some benefits to go with that.
LEAVE IRAN ALONE.
Enough of blood money.!
I cannot believe that this article is trying to make it look like the Bush administration is responsible for greedy American companies like GE who will do business with anyone regardless of who it hurts. Does President Bush have to stand at the docks and jump in front of the ships to keep them from going overseas? I wonder if the FAR LEFT MSNBC will do a follow-up report of how many shipments went to Afganistan and Iran while Bill clinton was getting blow jobs in the oval office?
If the Administration puts sanctions there which actually stop the business from doing any with Iran then there could be follow-up regarding greedy American companies. No sanctions to stop it, then the American companies will continue to ship there. If there were sanctions GE wouldn't be selling there pain and simple unless they wanted their asses hanging from the nearest flagpole. I get your point, but you cannot tell the world Iran is helping the extremists in Iraq kill out men and women, then ship rifles and parts to Iran at the same time. You ban it with sanctions which make it illegal to ship them any.
One thing we shouldn't be selling them in any shape, form, or capacity is rifles, rifle parts or anything related to weapons. Its one thing for the Administration to be hypocrite, but another to send them weapons when we accuse them of helping the extremists in Iraq of kill our own soldiers.
This article is so ridiculously distorted that it damages the reputation of the reporting organization. This is also an insult to the readers who are obviously assumed to be stupid enough to accept the implications of the embedded data as intended by the writer rather than apply a reasonable level of intellect and extract a realistic perspective. A pathetic example of what often currently passes for news and reporting.
Mark,
Your facts?
Just a few examples. The article title and text reads like we are trading significant military supplies to Iran while only giving lip service to our efforts to resolve the conflict. The truth, only using the information in the example, is that the vast majority of $'s are Food and Drugs. Both are allowed, and I would think appropriate in supporting the people of Iran while opposing the Regime. The vast majority of other trade, 1000X the value of the "military goods" is Cigarettes. Cigarettes are controlled by the FDA, since Food and Drugs trade are allowed, maybe this is why they are traded. Most of the military goods are rifles. What rifles? Could they be WWI rifles or other worthless weapons that would actually place our enemy's troops at risk? Aircraft Carrier parts for a military with no Aircraft Carriers? Lots of F14 talk, giving the impression that we trading military aircraft to Iran, but there are no such actual claims and no evidence. An example of selling a $38M aircraft for about 4K, attempting to make a connection that the $148K of military goods could have a value of 10,000 times that amount ($1.5B). An F14 liquidated for the amount would only be the result of its obsolescence and a cost of repair and maintenance that exceeds any realistic affordability. Zero relevance. Sales increasing 10X since 2001 ("under Bush"). There was a significant event in 2001 that may have driven sales to an extreme low. How do sales compare with 2000, or with the Clinton years? More specifically how to the sale of "banned goods" compare, since this is the only relevant element?
Haha! As if this isn't the kettle calling the pot black? MSNBC's parent company GE has been doing business with Iran through international subsidiaries for years! In fact, for all we know those are probably even GE refrigerators shown in the photo that accompany the story. Hmm....interesting how MSNBC does not mention their own parent company GE as one who does business with Iran. The hypocracy here kills me.
now we know what we exported to iran.what i want to know now is what we import from iran.export we make money, import they make money.I can think of one thing is iran very big with pomegranate concentrate but of course our juice makers are not disclosing where they get their concentrate.......Hellooooooooooooooo wake up
This article is more of MSNBC spoon feeding the cool-aid. It is not about Bush! The article reads as though George Bush is doing all of the trading. Was it about Clinton in the 90's? No mention whatsoever about the Clinton administration! You idiots on the left have nothing! Democrats are ruining our country and all you can do is whine about Bush. Meanwhile the entire government is corrupt to the core and you still think everything is Bush's fault and Democrats will save us all. Socialism is not the answer to anything. At least Iran is smart enough to drill for freakin oil!
Last time I looked Haliburton was not making bras or cigarettes. The companies doing the business with them are the ones at fault , you can't blame everything on Pres. Bush. OH that's right , you do, Time to get your facts straight and full.
I have absolutely no problem with sending food, medicine, bull semen, perfume, makeup and other commodities to improve the lives of Iranians--even cigarettes. If we didn't do it, someone else from Europe, China, Russia, etc. would!!!!! If this ensures that our people keep their jobs, that's fine with me. It would give me great pleasure to find out that the grand ole' Ayatollah smokes American weed or that his concubines wear American phumph. We would then be justified in calling HIM a hypocrite. And all of this would go to prove that even the great Ayatollah has to make space for the great Western Satan in his marketplace. As long as we don't send those people the kind of junk we often wind up buying, many of whom are hard pressed to be able to afford our products. However, used or refurbished F-14 parts, rifles or weapon parts aren't exactly on the list I would approve. They can get those from Russia!! After all, I doubt they would want Russia's bulls' semen.
bushes grandaddy help nazi germany build up their army even after 12-7-41 so why would his grandson be any diffrent, just like his daddy supplied both sides of the iran iraq conflict of the 80s most threats would not be the threats they are today with out the help of bush and his cronies, you just have to follow the money
