COLOMBO — Sri Lanka's military says a new wave of fighting in the north has killed 22 ethnic Tamil Tiger rebels and five soldiers.
Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara says the worst of Thursday's fighting took place in the Vavuniya region, where 10 Tamil fighters and four soldiers were killed.
He says one Tamil Tiger rebel was killed in Jaffna, and 11 other rebels and one soldier were killed in Welioya.
Rebel spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan was not immediately available for comment.
Both sides often exaggerate the losses inflicted on their enemy and underreport their own.
