HONOLULU — Lifeguards have closed off a two-mile stretch of ocean in Hawaii after a woman was injured in an apparent shark attack.

Officials say the woman was snorkeling about 50 yards off Makaha when she was injured Friday. She has been taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition with a wound to her upper extremities.

Paramedics say the woman made it to shore on her own and was aided by bystanders.

Lifeguards have cleared the ocean for a mile in each direction along the Waianae Coast and posted shark warning signs.

A police helicopter reported seeing a large shark near the shoreline just after the woman was hurt.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Someone was attacked and killed swimming a long way out on the coast [Kona big island] here about a month ago too but as far as I know it didn't make the papers.

When in nature, you are both guest and part of the buffet. Sometimes people forget that.

I guess she forgot sharks live in those waters and to use caution... hmmmm I thought rule of thumb was to have someone with you when you swam in ocean or went boating. .. just for safety reasons...
