Renowned Argentine artist Perez Celis dies at 69

BUENOS AIRES — Perez Celis, a prestigious Argentine muralist, painter and sculptor, died Saturday. He was 69.

Perez, who suffered from leukemia, died at the Otamendi sanitarium in the capital, Buenos Aires, the Argentine news agency Noticias Argentinas and the television station Todo Noticias reported.

Considered one of the great figures of contemporary Argentine art, Perez Celis lived and worked in Lima, Peru; Caracas, Venezuela; Montevideo, Uruguay; Paris and New York.

Born in 1939 in Buenos Aires, "he was a great artist, very well respected everywhere," a former colleague and friend, Ernesto Bertani, told Todo Noticias.

A wake will be held for the artist at the club of the Boca Juniors football team, of which Perez Celis was a huge fan.

Two of the artist's murals decorate the team's home stadium, "La Bombonera," in Buenos Aires.
