Presidential debate commission chooses moderators

advertisement

The Commission on Presidential Debates has named Jim Lehrer and Gwen Ifill of PBS, Tom Brokaw of NBC News and Bob Schieffer of CBS News as moderators of the three presidential debates and one vice presidential face-off.

Lehrer, anchor of "The NewsHour," will moderate the first presidential debate in Oxford, Miss., on Sept. 26. Ifill, a correspondent on the same program and moderator of "Washington Week," will handle the vice presidential debate Oct. 2 in St. Louis.

Brokaw, moderator of "Meet the Press," will handle the second presidential debate in Nashville, Tenn., followed by Schieffer, host of "Face the Nation," who will handle the third and final presidential debate in Hempstead, N.Y.

Each 90-minute debate will have a single moderator.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Hummm. No Faux news, MSNBC, CNN or ABC. I guess they really are trying to be fair and balanced.

Of course, moderators who have only their own interests at heart, media ratings. It would more reflect the environment of the nation if Bubba the Redneck, maybe Jeff Foxworthy of Think You're Smarter Than A Fifth Grader and Bill Dance of fishing fame. These people would ask the tough questions and not settle for a soft answer.

And have they announced who will be invited? Perhaps Barr and McKinney will be allowed to answer a few questions as well to help keep the two other guys honest?

      Don't hold your breath. :(

I wish, but the republicans and Democrats have a lock on the election process and will not give up that power. To do so empowers the voters and parties that have been marginalised.

Generally, only candidates polling greater than 15% nationally are invited to debate, the logic being that if you can't pull 15% in a poll, you're not a "viable" candidate, somewhat like some of the DNC caucus rules. If we let just anyone in to a debate, time is taken away from the real contenders, or so goes the conventional thinking.

In that light, it seems unlikely Barr or Nader will be invited.

        Gene in Mass,

And it is a ridiculous requirement. It assures that only 2 people will be at the debates and the ones who could use their views being heard by most Americans will not. They are being told that they are not viable.

The single requirement that the candidate must be on the ballot in enough states should be the only one, which is the other requirement made. It is not an easy feat, in fact this year that would net *3* candidates at the debate.

It is nice to know that we get to be told which candidates are 'viable' and which ones aren't instead of letting us decide that for ourselves. Especially considering most polls that are being used for this requirement do not include any other name than those of the two major parties.

        It's disgusting.

I hope you didn't consider my explanation an endorsement of the system. I certainly agree with your points, I just also understand where the debate commission is coming from. By the way, the 15% threshold isn't as exclusive as you might think: many polls do include those third-party candidates who are expected to compete nationally, and said candidates need only reference a single nationwide poll that shows them with 15% support.

Surely you all remember Ross Perot in the '92 debates. He was able to join the debate because he polled better than 20%.

And Bob Barr is polling around 7-10%, if he gets to 14% in one poll is he still not viable but at 15% he is?

I am just frustrated, didn't mean to assume you supported the plan.

Is there something wrong with an average American(not famous, rich, or other distinction) we have relevant questions too, even if we have to use spell checker.

What, no moderators from ABC news? How on earth will we waste the first 41 minutes of the debate on trivialities without those guys??

In the debate McCain and Obama should not receive the question ahead of time, the should have the phone lines open so the American people may ask the question and demand a complete answer. But that will not happen each of them will know the question before the debate so someone can answer the question for them.

So this is the best two people they have to offer for President of this country, have we when down the hill.
