Firefighters and residents say an apartment fire in New York City has killed a woman and her adult son and sent neighbors running to the roof to escape.

The blaze erupted in a third-floor apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side shortly after midnight.

Authorities say they haven't determined what started the fire.

Fifth-floor resident Dan Guertin tells the Daily News sirens woke him up and he fled to the roof and climbed to a building next door.

Building manager Glen Fogel says the victims were longtime residents of the building.
