Forklift helps 700-lb Mexican man take rare outing

MONTERREY — A 700-pound man once considered the world's most obese person left his home for the first time in five months Sunday with the aid of a forklift and a platform truck.

Manuel Uribe traveled to the shore of a lake in northern Mexico without ever leaving his specially designed bed. A forklift hoisted the bed onto the truck, which then hauled him to the lake, where he snacked on fish and vegetables and joked with a local boat operator.

Looking at the boatman's small craft, Uribe joked, "Too bad I can't get on it — it would sink."

Once considered the world's fattest man when his weight hit over half a ton, more than two years of steady dieting had helped Uribe drop to about 700 pounds as of June — 550 pounds less than his former Guinness record weight of 1,235 pounds. He did not say what his current weight is.

While somewhat bothered by the summer heat, Uribe appeared to enjoy Sunday's outing. He is still unable to walk, and his last planned outing in March was aborted after the platform carrying his bed got stuck under an overpass.

His last successful trip outside his home was in March 2007, when six people pushed Uribe's wheel-equipped iron bed out to the street as a mariachi band played and a crowd gathered to greet him.

Before that, he hadn't left his home in five years.

I couldn't let myself be written down for such a record. I don't even know how you can live being that heavy (or have kids).

There is a cycle to all abusive behavior. Uribe has his with food, others use sex, still others are involved in worse that I'll not discuss here.

It works like this: he thinks "bad" thoughts about his condition, his weight, which makes him feel sad and morose. In his sadness, he (as all of us do) reaches out to his comfort zone for solace, in his case, food. Then, after eating, he may realize he consumed quite a bit, or may even hear a snide comment or two. It doesn't even have to be that. His thoughts may return, as "Great. I've messed up again."

This leads again to self-condemnation, which starts the cycle or wheel all over again, as "he thinks bad thoughts about his condition, his views as a person", and this perpetuates the abusive behavior.

Psychologists know this and work with people to break the cycle. Once one recognizes that such a "cycle" is governing behavior, then corrective thinking and changes in ones thinking can lead to changes and improvements in behavior.

Uribe is to be commended. He has lost 550 pounds in two years, a remarkable feat for anyone, but more so for him as he is physically unable to exercise.

You seem to have a wonderfully understanding attitude. He needs understanding as well as help.

      Thank-you, Geezer.

I try to put myself in the shoes of others, except for thugs and the "criminal" element of society (regardless of whether we elected them or not).

My experience with clients, patients, researchers, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and even a few politicians underscores the maxim I oft quote:

      Hurt people, hurt people.

Go to any fast-food restaurant and you will observe young, often very young, parents slapping and hitting their children. Without even turning around to look, you will be able to listen (if you choose) to the words and the tone of voice, and you will find many times these new parents are very abusive. Why?

Human beings are taught, and behavior is learned. They are doing as was done unto them, and in so doing, perpetuate the behavior for the next generation.

Regarding politicians, thugs and lawyers (not necessarily in that order), the words of Jesus come to mind:

"The love of money is the root of all evil."

Hey, I have an idea for an alternative headline:

DIET AND EXERCISE HELP FORMERLY 700-LB MEXICAN MAN TO LEAD NORMAL LIFE

        Is it just me?

He did weigh 1,235 pounds, and has lost about 550 in two years, resulting in his current weight of about 700.

That puts a tremendous strain on the heart. It is amazing that he has lived to 43.

I hope and pray he lives long enough and can keep up the good work he has accomplished. At the rate he is losing weight, in another couple of years he could loose another 500 os so pounds and extend his life expectancy dramatically.

          I wish Uribe the best.

so, who kept feeding him to make him 1/2 ton? he certainly couldn't.
this is what i always think when i read about the incapacitated obese.

            maybe they should be arrested?

of course they didnt pour it down his throat, but really!

i am glad he is on a diet. hope he loses the other 500 pounds.

Yeah, I'm sure he got a lot of exercise getting wheeled around everywhere. Why do these people get all of this special attention?

It is not just "special attention". This is an anomaly. People are naturally inquisitive, and most people want to help, if they can.

How many people have you encountered who weigh 1,235 pounds? I have never met or spoken to anyone half that size, have you?

Uribe lost 550 pounds in two years. That is an incredible accomplishment for a guy who gets "...a lot of exercise getting wheeled around everywhere."
