Nuance reports 3Q loss expands by 30 percent

Nuance Communications Inc. posted a loss for the fiscal third quarter that was 30 percent wider than its year-ago results, but its adjusted numbers still managed to beat Wall Street's consensus estimate by a penny.

The Burlington, Mass., company late Monday reported a loss of $9.9 million, or 5 cents per share, for the three months ended June 30. That's compared with a loss of $7.6 million, or 4 cents per share, in the third quarter of last year.

Revenue climbed 38 percent to $216.7 million in the latest quarter from $156.6 million a year earlier.

Excluding items, the company posted net income of $51.4 million, or 22 cents per share, up from $27.9 million, or 14 cents per share, a year earlier.

Wall Street on average had expected Nuance to report earnings of 21 cents per share on $232.3 million in revenue for the latest quarter, according to a survey of analysts by Thomson Financial. Analyst estimates typically exclude one-time gains and charges.

The Burlington, Mass., company makes speech-based technology used to provide automated customer care services, directory assistance and voice-activated commands on wireless devices, among other applications. The company also provides dictation and transcription solutions and services, as well as imaging solutions.

Nuance said revenue from "mobile and embedded solutions" totaled $45.3 million in the latest quarter, driven by customers including LG Electronics, Samsung and Nokia Corp. The company said demand for clinical documentation technology also continues to grow.

Its shares slipped 59 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $17.30 in after-hours trading after rising 19 cents to end the regular session at $17.89.
