— Before Julia Child became known to the world as a leading chef, she admitted at least one failing when applying for a job as a spy: impulsiveness. Details about Child's background as a government agent come into the public spotlight Thursday with the National Archives' release of more than 35,000 top-secret personnel files of World War II-era spies. The CIA held this information for decades.

The 750,000 documents identify the vast spy network managed by the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the CIA. President Franklin Roosevelt created the OSS, the country's first centralized intelligence operation.

Child's file shows that in her OSS application, she included a note expressing regret she left an earlier department store job hastily because she did not get along with her boss, said William Cunliffe, an archivist who has worked extensively with the OSS records at the National Archives.

The OSS files offer details about other agents, including Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, major league catcher Moe Berg, historian Arthur Schlesinger Jr. and film actor Sterling Hayden.

Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Kermit Roosevelt, son of President Theodore Roosevelt; and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police.

Some of those on the list have been identified previously as having worked for the OSS, but their personnel records never have been available before. Those records would show why they were hired, jobs they were assigned to and perhaps even missions they pursued while working for the agency.

The release of the OSS personnel files unmasks one of the last secrets from the short-lived wartime intelligence agency, which for the most part was later folded into the CIA after President Truman disbanded it in 1945.

"I think it's terrific," said Elizabeth McIntosh, 93, a former OSS agent now living in Woodbridge, Va. "They've finally, after all these years, they've gotten the names out. All of these people had been told never to mention they were with the OSS."

The CIA long resisted releasing the records. But a former CIA director, William Casey, himself an OSS veteran, cleared the way for transfer of millions of OSS documents to the National Archives when he took over the spy agency in 1981. The personnel files are the latest documents to be made public.

Information about OSS involvement was so guarded that relatives often could not confirm a family member's work with the group.

Walter Mess, who handled covert OSS operations in Poland and North Africa, said he kept quiet for more than 50 years, only recently telling his wife of 62 years about his OSS activity.

"I was told to keep my mouth shut," said Mess, now 93 and living in Falls Church, Va.

The files provide new information even for those most familiar with the agency. Charles Pinck, president of the OSS Society created by former OSS agents and their relatives, said the nearly 24,000 employees included in the archives far exceed previous estimates of 13,000.

The newly released documents will clarify these and other issues, Cunliffe said.

"We're saying the OSS was a lot bigger than they were saying," he said.

Oi! I object to the changed title!

Why'd they retract one of the best headlines of the year?!

Ah, they changed it again... and compromised.

I don't remember exactly, but the original title was something like "Julia Child was part of WWII-era spy ring."

Jack,

AP must've heard you because they changed the title back!

Do the news services normally play around with titles on fluid media such as the 'net?

Yeah, for at least a handful of minutes there, they removed Julia Child's name from the title completely. Now they added "Documents:", because, you know, otherwise people would think the Associated Press was a tabloid rag.

Do the news services normally play around with titles on fluid media such as the 'net?

I don't think so, though I honestly don't interact much on AP Newsvine articles.

The AP changes headlines faster than weather changes in Seattle. It's been like that as long as we've been getting the feeds here at Newsvine. It's part of what inspired the MSM Incinerator group!

A new revelation to a generation not taught their history; but that she and others of note were OSS was the worst kept secret around and fairly common knowledge to those of a certain age and background.

Seems an almost lost in a fugue thought; but when she was on The Dick Cavett Show they talked about that and when stationed in France she developed her love of cooking.

A statuesque Lady, I've no doubt she could have set anyone down hard.

That said, there will be many families who may find out that Grandma/pa really was ... well the delightful film Secondhand Lion comes to mind.

As the Korean and Vietnam War vets age out I've no doubt many families may become aware that the history of their family members will be fleshed out and the catch all TDY covered a myriad of unreported missions.

Yes. I too, recall either from reading her biography or seeing in interview this tidbit. "Lost fugue thought" indeed. A sign of old age.

What do you consider horrid? Any chef were their salt will tell you otherwise.

re: Julia Child. About 12 years ago I was in the superb restaurant Biba, and Ms. Child came in with entourage. This lady could eat! She obviously loved food, but this became an exercise in gluttony. She was more than statuesque, really. Nevertheless, both she and her party were having a great time (maybe because all the food was comped helped). Her joy for life was infectious.

RIP Julia :o(

Even if these folks never provided any essential information, they still but their butts on the line by being agents. Kudos to them all!

Shall we point out that many of them would probably have been on McCarthy's 'hit' list?

MGDasef....Shall we point out that many of them would probably have been on McCarthy's 'hit' list?

Not if we aim to paint an accurate picture of who benefitted by McCarthy and who was victimized. The inner circle of Wall Street Investment Bankers created the OSS; they were and still are untouchable and many have deep roots in covert operations.

Critics like Valerie Plame get outed and hunted, insiders like CIA-Banker Buzzy Krongard slide by without facing questions about the insider trades in the airline stocks that suggest foreknowledge of the 9/11 events market impact.

That does not suggest Julia and others didn't take great personal risk with the aim of defending freedom and justice, but to add historical context about who gets to be America's enemy.

The Dulles-OSS Gang of Yale Bonesmen did much to promote the witch hunt for Communists.
McCarthy could have stayed an unknown lush and wingnut in obscurity, but the search for enemies distracted greatly from investigating the war profiteers found guilty under Trading With The Enemy Act.

No profiteer was targeted and the corporate property that was seized, was quietly returned. As McCarthy hunted new enemies of freedom, the capitalist crimes fell by the wayside. It is much like now when the chorus aiming for Acorn ignores the latest crimes of the march to war and organized gang of thieves in the war profiteering and on to the Bank Heist we are watching today.

All that said, still kudos and thanks to those others, who do offer selfless service.

PamelaDrew----Thank you for this post. I had pieces, but not put them together as you have. I once knew a close relative of Mary Bancroft (another lady spy in the OSS) and had become quite interested in her story. Julia Childs was more well-known, but Mary was more fascinating to me (Allen Dulles, Carl Jung). I hadn't considered the McCarthy factor.

While the sons of President Theodore Roosevelt all served honorably in both World Wars, this report is apparently mistaken identifying Quentin and Kermit as being involved with the OSS. Quentin was KIA in July 1918 over France as a US pilot. His death broke the heart of President Roosevelt who died six months later. Kermit served honorably in both World Wars but suffered from depression and alcoholism. He committed suicide in 1943. His son, also named Kermit, was the mastermind of the CIA plot in 1953 to successfully return the Shah of Iran to power. President Roosevelt's other two sons distinguished themselves very honorably. Theodore Jr. was a Brigadier General who won the Medal of Honor while actually landing in Normandy on D-Day. Archibald suffered wounds in WWI and WWII earning him 100% disability each time. The great Theodore Roosevelt would surely have been very proud of sons' service.

Ok, let me get this straight: Julia Child, Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, Chicago White Sox catcher Moe Berg, and the dad of the drummer for the band Police were spies?

My head is spinning...

I can't wait to see the personnel records.

"Those records would show why they were hired, jobs they were assigned to and perhaps even missions they pursued while working for the agency."

I can see it now. Julia Child: "The Enforcer"

Miles Copeland was a highly regarded diplomat and ambassador for the State Department. Both his sons made a huge mark in the music industry: Stewart with the Police, and Miles Jr. as head of the greatest new wave/independent music label, I.R.S. Records.

On a completely different note;

It was an excellent article, however,

Kermit and Quentin Roosevelt are both listed in the story as having been part of OSS, but poor Quentin was killed during World War 1, flying over France. His death came about 30 years before the existence of OSS.

This is very old news to anyone who has read about the beloved Julia Child. While stationed in France, she met her husband and wanted to cook for him, but demolished, burned, or in some manner ruined everything. She came from a wealthy New England family and had never been in a kitchen much less cooked. So she got herself into the big French cooking school....and that is where she met her best friend who later helped her with her first cookbook...and others later. All for the love of her husband who enjoyed French food. He was a bit older than she and made it his life's job to help her with her shows, her books.....he helped when she tried out a recipe, cleaned up after her. They were love birds all of their life together. She helped him when he developed Alzheimer's, as he had helped her during her breast cancer....she was devastated when he died.

At least I know who sent me the file in my birthday cake: Pineapple-Upside Down with a Light Maple Syrup-Cinnamon-Raisin Glaze. And, I have no idea what she did to those raisins, but I hope the government
