Man uses Barbie fishing rod to make record catch

Agreed, it was a cute story until I read the last line ...

It was 32 inches long, 2 inches longer than the rod.

Then it became downright hilarious.

I'll bet people who bought those fancy $500 fishing poles are kicking themselves about now..... heh.

Naw, this is a great story! I can just imagine him bargaining, as he was fighting this bad boy to the bank, "Pawpaw will buy you a new one if it breaks, I promise!" This man will live on long after he's gone every time his little granddaughter recounts how Grandpappy caught the state record channel cat on her barbie doll fishing pole (with a 6lb test line, no less) and when her kids tell their kids.

I firmly believe these are three of the very best things you can do with a kid: 1.) Read to them then read to them some more 2.) Take them fishing 3.) Get them hooked on genealogy

I looked at these in a Spongebob version, if I remember correctly. It looked to be a prettied up version of the old Zebco 303s we all learned to fish with when we were kids. The grandsons are about old enough now.

That's pretty much what they are. Something for a beginner to catch a few bream and crappie on. If you take the cover off, you'll probably find plastic gears and drag (brakes).

I might just have a yard sale and get rid of my fairly expensive rods and reels, (about 12-15), and go buy 8-10 Spongebob rods. I have caught 6 cats that weighed 18,18,19,21,21,and 35 pounds each. Numerous largemouth bass up to 11 pounds. I think I've been overspending on tackle!!! I probably have 6-7 hundred $'s worth of rods, lures,etc..
I'll see if I can find the picture of the 35 lb. cat. I had the 11 lb. bass mounted, and they tasted mighty good, too!!!

Big channel cat's mighty fine eatin' Abby. Gotta filet them though. I would have thought NC would have had a much larger state record for this species where 30 to 50lbers aren't uncommon. Our record here in VA is just over 30lbs. Chicken livers left out to ferment in the sun for an afternoon were my favorite bait for these critters when we used to fish for catfish of an evening in the Shenandoah Valley in my youth.

Could be overwhelmed with pride...the fish looks heavy...but, yeah. I'm hearing the voice of the narrator from The Wonder Years talking about how great it was that he caught that fish, and then the reality of the Barbie fishing pole sets in with sounds of his brainless friends' cackling laughter.

I think he will carry the weight of this fish story for the rest of his life.

I'll through in my two cents.... When frying, throw in some diced potatoes, with the fish. Potatoes get that lingering taste off the fish, plus you won't get the taste in the potatoes. Don't know why, just does. How big of a pond did this guy have behind his house, to have a channel cat? Or was it stocked at sometime?

Still a heck of a story. I'll have to get my youngest granddaughter one of those poles and take her fishing.

gatorhater, you might be surprised. I saw a half acre pond drained. There was a 63 pound cat in it. It had been put in the pond some twenty years and fifty pounds earlier!

I was thinking channel cats had to have running water to spawn. That's what I remember from a visit to those catfish farms in Mississippi.

There is a 6,000 acre lake near my home. No large tributaries, just a few small creeks. They pump water back into it through 4 pipes, each big enough to drive an 18 wheeler through. They spawn in it, and I have seen them, (blue channel cats), spawn in ponds less than 15 acres each. I have caught two 18 lbs., one 19 lbs., two 21 lbs., and one 35 lbs. blue channel cats in one place, sitting on the bank, of the nearby lake. It is a reservoir for a nuclear power plant. there have been 70-89 lbs. cats caught there. The SC state record for a blue channel cat is (if I remember correctly) about 109 lbs. and was caught out of a river near Charleston, SC.

Hey, I used to go on family outings in the area where "Deliverance" supposedly took place. A few years ago, I got to go swimming and fishing in that same area. Almost made me cry to think of all that beautiful, unspoiled land under all that water...then I got to clean, cook and eat my catch! Yummm!

Last Ken Doll I saw used as bait ended up getting eaten.

You don't fry fish in butter. Peanut oil is the best for frying fish. Catfish that size are best filleted and cut into strips then fried. If you get to drinking while cooking, you could have a disaster on your hands, so no fish fryer worth his salt is going to be drinking and cooking!

Catfish are also EXCELLENT when smoked......

Now why would you comment on the Child.....She is much cuter than the ugly catfish!
