Official: Man wasn't a 'credible threat' to Obama

Authorities are investigating whether a man arrested with rifles, ammunition and drugs in his truck made statements threatening Barack Obama, but emphasize he never posed a "credible threat" to the candidate or the Democratic National Convention.

Federal and local authorities had scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon, but U.S. Attorney Troy Eid downplayed the case.

"We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," Eid said in a statement.

FBI spokeswoman Kathy Wright confirmed the FBI was investigating reports the man had threatened Obama, who will be in Denver this week to accept the Democratic nomination for president. The Joint Information Center — a command set up by city, state and federal authorities to field media inquiries during the Democratic convention — said it had no immediate comment.

Officials arrested three men and a woman last weekend suspected of plotting to shoot Obama as he gave his acceptance speech for the presidential nomination.

One of the men arrested told KCNC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver, that others involved in the case had made racist statements regarding Obama and had discussed killing Obama on the day of the speech.

When asked if he felt there was a plot to kill Obama, Nathan Johnson said, "Looking back at it, I don't want to say yes, but I don't want to say no." Johnson was interviewed while being held in jail on drug charges. He said he wasn't involved in any plot.

Three senior FBI officials said it's unclear whether shooters could have had a clear path to hit the stage from outside the convention hall. At least two of the men may have had white supremacist ties, the officials said, adding that it was unclear whether any of them were serious about carrying out threats. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

The action started around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when police in the eastern suburb of Aurora stopped a truck that was swerving erratically. The driver, 28-year-old Tharin Gartrell, had a suspended driver's license, and the truck was rented in the name of another person, said Aurora police Detective Marcus Dudley.

In the truck, officers found two rifles, including one with a scope; a bulletproof vest; boxes of ammunition; walkie-talkies; and suspected narcotics, Dudley said.

Aurora police, on edge because of heightened security surrounding the Democratic convention in Denver, alerted federal authorities.

Three hours later, at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, federal agents arrested Johnson, 32, at a hotel in Denver. He was being held on drug charges, Dudley said.

A half-hour after that, 33-year-old Shawn Robert Adolf jumped from a sixth-story window when authorities tried to arrest him at a hotel in suburban Glendale, police said.

Adolf was hospitalized and was being held on $1 million bond for several outstanding warrants involving drug charges. He had a handcuff key in one hand and a swastika ring on the other when he was arrested, a senior FBI official said.

Dudley didn't say what tied the men together but said more arrests were possible. One of the rifles was stolen, and authorities had traced it to Kansas, Dudley said.

It wasn't known if the three men had attorneys, Dudley said.

Dudley said Gartrell was being investigated for methamphetamine and firearms violations. Gartrell, who has no known address, was being held at the Arapahoe County jail on $50,000 bail on drug and weapons charges. The jail said he was due in court Thursday.

Law enforcement officials were also investigating whether the men were linked to vandalism shootings that targeted at least two federal buildings in Denver over the last two weeks. Windows were shot at the U.S. Custom House and the U.S. Military Entrance Processing Station on the same street in Denver's downtown Federal District.

Additionally, a bullet was recovered from a Hertz rental car that was shot in the area on Aug. 15, and authorities are now looking to see if it could have matched the guns seized from the men.

Denver suburbs, including Aurora, have a history of skinhead activities particularly, in the 1990s, said Mark Potok, who tracks white supremacist trends for the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala.

Potok said his organization does not know any of the men arrested Sunday, but Colorado has 12 established white supremacist groups — a moderate number compared to the rest of the country.

The reaction to the arrests on white supremacist web forums is a fear that this alleged plot is a government set up intended to destroy white nationalists, Potok said.

When the attempt comes on Barack's life (and I hope it never does) I won't be looking at the racists. I'll want to ask people like Richard Cheney what their connection to it is. Sure white supremacists would love the idea of killing the first black president of the US, but it's the far right wing neoconservatives who have much more to lose with an Obama presidency. They fought long and hard for the power and corruption they achieved and it's unlikely they'll give it up without a fight.

RDS, that is an irresponsible and reprehensible comment from you at a time like this. Your comments are exceptionally divisive and reckless and unfounded.

As a Conservative Republican, let me say that I thank God these would-be assassins have been caught and stopped. No punishment is too severe for these crazy, dangerous, and anti-American thugs. No good American, regardless of party, wants to see our political process subverted or to see a good man killed. What a grotesque tragedy that would be for his family, his supporters, and for our whole nation.

The next step is to round up any other co-conspirators or members of whatever "white supremacist" group they may have been a part of. And, I doubt that anyone from the Left will complain this time if the FBI or Secret Service use aggressive measures to catch every criminal involved in this plot.

Plot to Kill Obama: Shoot From High Vantage Point Into Stadium ... White Supremacist Meth-Heads Involved?

Sources say he had a handcuff ring and was wearing a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations.

They sound like drug crazed morons with a far-fetched plot, but nonetheless, we can be thankful that they didn't hurt anyone, especially Senator Obama. Great work by Law Enforcement in tracking them down.

My comment has nothing to do with traditional conservative republicans, but rather was directed at neoconservatives. The vast majority of republicans (small r) are good, if misguided, people. The Neoconservatives on the other hand are corrupt neo-fascists that have infected the GOP. They have nothing at all to do with the party of Goldwater and Ford and everything to do with extreme right wing, even Nazi like, ideology.

What good are your ugly speculations at this time? RDS, you continue to make a very reckless statements that are filled with hyperbole and paranoia.

Let's stay focused on what has just happened, which is bad enough. It appears that some white supremacist meth-heads hatched a plot to kill Obama. Law enforcement, federal and local, thwarted the plot.

Let's wait to hear more before we start blaming Bush/Cheney/Halliburton/Military, okay?

Actually, I understand what R. Donald Snyder is saying. I know it sounds awful, but think about it. Bush and Cheney are evil men. They do not have the good of the country at heart. They have ruined this country --- or have tried to for the gain of only a few.

With Bush and Cheney, it's all about power and money. When Obama becomes president, things will be different. Equality will become the rule. This is a threat to the right-wingers, putting Obama at risk. People like Cheney, who do not have honorable values, do bad things to attain power and money. That is what the past 8 years have been about; it certainly has not been about the American people!

So, ya, I understand what Donald is saying and also point my finger at the Bush administration. I don't trust them; they are crooks and will do anything for the greedy right-wingers to keep their power and money.

If one takes your advice to "think about it," then one would completely dismiss the ugly and paranoid accusations that you make against Bush and Cheney. You can hate them and vote for change, but engaging in that kind of wild speculation is just one more symptom of the "Bush Derangement Syndrome" and "Blame Bush" knee-jerk reactions that some on the far Left have.

Why can't we stay focused on the actual story at hand here without immediately wandering off into irresponsible and unhinged conspiracy theories and mindless Bush/Cheney bashing? If that's all you can do, why not go start your own article about that?

    Hel-lo!!!! Earth to Tom ...

How you could even possibly start to deny that the Republicans have interfered with recent elections is mind-boggling. Just off the top of my head, in 2000 Florida voters who had names similar to that of a felon(i.e. first three letters) had their names purged - iff they lived in a highly Democratic area of the state. 2002 the RNC jams the phones of the Democratic get out the vote effort in New Hampshire. Felony indictments, prison terms on this one. 2004 in Ohio the Secretary of State refused to allocate enough voting machines in precincts where Democratic turnout was strong. 12 hours to cast a vote! That's not interfering with an election???

You can't face the truth that the Republicans got into power via some extremely shady and provably criminal means.

But despite the media blackout, indications continued to emerge that something deeply troubling had taken place in 2004. Nearly half of the 6 million American voters living abroad(3) never received their ballots -- or received them too late to vote(4) -- after the Pentagon unaccountably shut down a state-of-the-art Web site used to file overseas registrations.(5) A consulting firm called Sproul & Associates, which was hired by the Republican National Committee to register voters in six battleground states,(6) was discovered shredding Democratic registrations.(7) In New Mexico, which was decided by 5,988 votes,(8) malfunctioning machines mysteriously failed to properly register a presidential vote on more than 20,000 ballots.(9) Nationwide, according to the federal commission charged with implementing election reforms, as many as 1 million ballots were spoiled by faulty voting equipment -- roughly one for every 100 cast.(10)

Thank you for your comment. It is terrible that it has come to this in this nation that some of us could distrust our own government to the point where we would not even put political murder past them in their attempts to retain power. Still considering the corruption of this current administration it's not really surprising. The list of their crimes against America and the world is nearly endless. They have used the terrible events of 9-11 to start an invasion of another country that had nothing to do with the attack, just for the power and profit of war contractors. Trillions of dollars are at stake and I do not believe they'll surrender that much power and money, to say nothing of avoiding the prison sentences they'd receive if there was a comprehensive look into their dirty deals, without trying even assassination to avoid it. In my life there have been administrations I have hated (Nixon, Reagan), but never one I feared until this one.

I am quite familiar with Florida, having lived near Miami, and currently living near Pensacola. I have used butterfly ballots. You might want to talk to the DEMOCRATIC PARTY election officials in many disputed Florida counties as to why they were unprepared to handle the election of 2000.

Don't get me started on the Democratic shenanigans in that and other elections. To sanctimoniously point fingers at Republicans is laughable. Al Gore selfishly tried to steal the 2000 election, and he nearly succeeded. In his effort, he created a fierce and bitter partisan divide that has never been healed. The Left has been at war with George Bush since late 2000, undermining and fighting him at every turn.

These latest paranoid rantings speculating about Bush assassinating Obama are just another piece of slime from the bottom of the barrel.

What does it have to do with the incompetent voters who couldn't figure out how to use a simple ballot? What does it have to do with criminals trying to vote, or illegal aliens trying to vote? What does it have to do with Al Gore trying to disenfranchise thousands of Florida military voters? What does it have to do with the news networks disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of West Florida voters by projecting a Gore victory one hour before the polls closed?

Do you really want to re-live the 2000 election?

I have predicted for some time that if someone (and i predicted white supremacists) took a potshot at obama, whether they succeeded or not, the Bush administration would use it to tighten down security, take away more civil liberties and possibly declare martial law (if there was a major outcry, which there would be).

Yes the nutjobs scare me, but yes...the neocons do too. You really cannot discount the major steps that they have taken to take down our civil liberties in the last 8 years. And doing that, in my eyes, is tantamount to attempting to hijack our government.

I think they're all scary--white supremacists, super-religious people who want religious law in place of secular law, and corporatists-above-all, who place profit over people's lives.

This Pavlovian mechanism that is so rampant here on Newsvine never ceases to amaze me. Instead of focusing on the story, we immediately have conspiracy theories, Bush-blamers, and now, of course, the obligatory bashing of "religious people." Of course, it's all apropos of nothing, but it seems to be hardwired into some commenters here that we must always hit the touchstones ... proclaim once more the tired and shopworn shibboleths. It's sort of like a Leftist Liturgy for all discussions. "It's Bush, it's Cheney, it's neo-cons, it's Fox News, it's religion, it's Halliburton, it's the military, it's neoHalliCheney!"

Wow, how ironic this story should surface. I was just having this discussion yesterday.

I was having a political discussion with a Contractor yesterday while he was taking down some wallpaper at my friends house and he stated that if Obama was elected President that he would more than likely be assassinated within the first year of his presidency and likened it to Kennedy's reign.

When I hopped onto Newsvine as a part of my daily routine before work, I came across this story.
My conversation with the Contractor yesterday rings true now more than ever.

I would certainly hope that it does not come to assassination...

We as a country need to be more proactive about teaching Tolerance. Change is good folks, change is inevitable.

Tom B says: "Why can't we stay focused on the actual story at hand here without immediately wandering off......"
Tom, I believe most folks here ARE focused on the actual story at hand; otherwise, they wouldn't be on this board. Is there a possibility that you want folks to "focus" ONLY on the viciousness of the possible assassination plot of a good man so that no one will focus on the who or why? Apparently these plotters were white supremacist? But we'll have to wait for the authorities to investigate and hope that we get the truth from our present Justice department. It's not like we haven't gone through eight years of secrets and cover- ups! So you cannot blame people for being cinical. I've read many boards tonight with theories from the mafia to the Clintons. I'm not stupid enough to believe that the Clintons or any of the people you've named above had any direct involvement in this.

But pease don't freak out when you hear the word neo-con until you know what it means. They come from both political parties and they are very wealthy and very powerful. They control the country and the corporate neo-con MSM. I doubt very seriously that you are connected enough to be allowed among the neo-con crowd. They wouldn't give you a second look or me either. Now, it's the main stream media's job to keep us dumbed down. To feed us what they want us to know and cover up what they don't want us to know. They do nothig to educate the public or to stamp out the lies and hatred that some of them spread across the land. So when the poor uneducated fools hear the lies of hatred enough; they act out and tragedy happens. Thank God, this one was stopped. But until the American people wake up and wise up and stop making excuses for those who have their feet on our necks; we may all be doomed! It might be good for you to do some neo-con research.

Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez! Enough with the ridiculous and irrelevant and meaningless bleatings of the "neocon" shibboleth. I'm not a little child here who needs to get a kindergarten lecture on political history.

What's with some of the paranoid conspiracy theories that immediately surface here? Who programs you people to immediately began chanting: "Bush's fault! Cheney did it! Halliburton! WTC 7! Neo-con! Fascist! Florida! Butterfly ballot! Charlie the Unicorn!"

Where do you recommend doing your "neo-con" research? WikiPedia? DailyKos? George Soros' underwear drawer? C'mon, this whole "Bush/Cheney want to assassinate Obama" ROT is only inflaming and distracting us from the real issue here.

As a Conservative (not a neo-con, but an old school Reagan Conservative), I have thoroughly denounced the moron meth head neo-Nazis who "planned" their oddball attack on Obama, and I have praised God that Obama is safe from this plot.

Now, would all of you conspiracy theorists please take your nutty and irresponsible and divisive jabber over to Huffington Post, please?

Someone who has the tendency to take this kind of action could easily become agitated and feel supported by many of the comments on these message boards. Many of the entries are just too extreme and serve no purpose

Some nut with the propensity to take this kind of action could easily be become agitated and feel encouraged by many of the comments that are posted on these message boards. Each person posting needs to evaluate the impact that hurtful words could have on a pliable mind

You know what bugs me about this story?

One of the men arrested told KCNC-TV, the CBS affiliate in Denver

Why was this guy given the chance to be interviewed on TV? Why was he allowed to walk down the hallway of the police station without handcuffs?

        Thoughts, anyone?

How is it that three men with high-powered weapons and drugs, apparent white supremacists, not "a credible threat"?
