Pakistan: Lawyers rally for return of judges

LAHORE — Hundreds of lawyers are rallying in major Pakistani cities and disrupting traffic.

They are pressuring the government to reinstate dozens of judges fired by ex-President Pervez Musharraf.

Lawyers played a major role in undermining Musharraf, who resigned Aug. 18 to avoid impeachment by the country's ruling coalition.

The government this week reinstated some judges, but it appears reluctant to restore Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry. Musharraf sacked the judges in November to avoid legal challenges to his rule.

The protests Thursday happened in cities such as Karachi, Multan and Lahore. A top lawyer leader, Aitzaz Ahsan, said the ruling coalition should "honor its pledge" to restore Chaudhry and other judges.
