Reaction to Republican presidential candidate John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate:
___
"Gov. Palin is a proven reformer who is a wise steward of taxpayer dollars and champion for accountability in government. Gov. Palin's success is due to her dedication to principle and her roll-up-your-sleeves work ethic and serves as a wonderful example of the spirit of America. By selecting a working mother with a track record of getting things done, Sen. McCain has once again demonstrated his commitment to reforming Washington." — President Bush.
___
"Gov. Palin is an independent leader who has fought the special interests on behalf of the people of Alaska. The McCain-Palin ticket will appeal to voters across party lines." — Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn.
___
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency," Adrianne Marsh, a spokeswoman for Democrat Barack Obama.
___
"Gov. Palin's views align with Sen. McCain's own stated position that human life is precious and must be protected. ... This selection by Sen. McCain is a very encouraging sign for his campaign." — James Dobson, founder of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family.
___
"I believe that in order to make government work better it must include both strong men and women. With this historic choice Sen. McCain has clearly shown his and the Republican Party's commitment to including every voice in our society." — Rep. Candice Miller, R-Mich.
___
"Holy cow. I'm just kind of speechless on the whole thing." — Chuck Heath, Palin's father.
___
"This is a bold and exciting pick that demonstrates the Republican Party is focused on the future and changing how Washington, D.C. does business. As an outsider, Gov. Palin has a solid record of making government work better, including fighting for landmark ethics reform." — Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash.
___
"Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling." — Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
___
"I am pleased with Sen. McCain's pick for vice president. Gov. Palin is an outstanding, terrific pick for the job — for the country, for the Republican Party and for the citizens we try to serve." — Gov. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn.
___
"On his 72nd birthday, is this really the one-heartbeat-away he wants to put in the White House?" — Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill.
__
"Gov. Palin is a strong conservative with executive experience who has cut wasteful spending, opposed earmarks and shown courage in taking on corruption in her own party." — Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C.
___
"John McCain has made clear from the start that he wants to change Washington and he proved it today by going as far away from Washington as possible in selecting his running mate. Eighty-eight years after our nation's women first gained the right to vote, this selection demonstrates how far our nation has come." — Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.
__
"They're (conservatives) going to be excited about this pick because here's an authentic person who believes and does what she says in her policy atmosphere and can authentically carry that message to the country." — Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan.
___
"She will strengthen Sen. McCain's appeal to Reagan Democrats, and supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, who are looking for a president who has the experience and temperament to be commander in chief." — Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis.
___
"She's tough, she's tenacious. I believe that she does have what it takes to get out there. Again, her ability to connect with voters and make a case is very, very, very strong." — Paulette Simpson, of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women.
and supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, who are looking for a president who has the experience and temperament to be commander in chief." — Michigan Republican Party Chairman Saul Anuzis.
Hah... this is funny.
By uncloaking these words you find out that Saul Anuzis is saying "...supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton, who are looking for a woman to vote for..."
How stupid do professional politicians and analysts think the women in this country are? Hillary Clinton has weathered the storm in Washington and knows how the "big guys" play. You can't just tout out ANY woman to placate voters. Some of us women actually vote for the best qualities a candidate offers, pity too many of them are all too often "molded" by the parties they belong to. Now, if McCain really wants my vote, ask Al Gore to be the Secretary of Energy.
Are you kidding me? She's picked primarily because she's female! If she were a male with all the same credentials, would McSame have picked her? Hardly. Why a stunning way to disrespect the intelligence of American women. She's a laughable lightweight for the VP job. Even Pat Buchanan called her "girl" on Chris Matthews last night. (And she was part of Buchanan's Brigades in the 1990s.)
Oh, one other thing. Why's she popular in Alaska? Because there the government GIVES money to its citizens!
are you sure they are conservatives.. they hate handouts.. sounds like thats all she does up there in Alaska
Wow, 11 in favor and only 3 opposed! Must be a great choice.
Seriously, how the AP could actually send this along their wire is beyond me. Why didn't they just say, "Republicans like the pick. Democrats not so much."
but you forget Democrats are the ones you are trying to get... the women anyway!!
And I can tell you, we have brains and we don't vote for anything that has a vagina.... she is no HRC, and McCain should not insult our intelligence....
Smart women will see through this and would never vote for a woman who wants to reverse all of the miles of progress HRC has made!!!
This whole thing is too funny!!!! HAHAHAHAHAAH I can just hear the good ole boys, "McCain picked a girl to be his VP. Is he crazy? Girls can't be VP or president!" HAHAHAHAHAHAH
I cannot believe in this day of knowledgeable women such as Condoleezza Rice, the republicans come up with the MOST unqualified woman for the job. What is this 1955? This is not Happy Days and women that are qualified for the job of Vice President of the United States are quite abundant. What an insult to Republican women!
McCain could just have well selected presidential groupie Rep. Michelle Bachmann...she'd have been just as ill qualified as Gov. Palin.
Sarah Palin graduated from a college in Idaho, undergrad only. I think a president should demonstrate superior thinking and hopefully, an excellent advanced educational background. It would also be nice for a president to have legal background or education to assess bills which are presented for signing by a President. Isn't it time for an administration who believes is science instead of supporting creationism as she does?
"Isn't it time for an administration who believes is science instead of supporting creationism as she does?"
Hopefully she proof reads those bills better than you proof read your blog post. I guess since we all came from monkeys we shouldn't really expect that much from you though.
McCain's cancers & age make the VP choice critical. It shows poor judgement: like Bush picking Harriet Myers. The White House needs a thinker.
How stupid do professional politicians and analysts think the women in this country are? Hillary Clinton has weathered the storm in Washington and knows how the "big guys" play. I just sat back and laughed, thinking you got to be kidding me. I think this shows McCain's true thoughts about women, he thinks were all stupid. This ploy of tossing in a woman on the ballot is proposterous. it terrifies me to think that this old guy who's body clock is ticking like a bomb nominates a weak v.p. Just think to yourself, what happens if he dies, it has happened before with a president dieing of natural causes what makes him immune. If this happens how the hell is she going to run this country, what is her credentials in international affairs and other big issues that her education points to a blank. I did some reseach and her list of achievements are very short. If I were you republicans I would be ashamed to vote for a canidate with such meager knowledge.
i would rather have a weak VP with exc experience then a weak president with no leadership experience. She is a great choice
McCain/Palin 2008
If I were you republicans I would be ashamed to vote for a canidate with such meager knowledge.
________________________________________________________________________________
Yeah Yeah you want to talk war knowledge obama couldn't even point to the nation of Georgia on a map. do you really want someone with very little knowledge about geography with his hands on the button
lets think here don't believe everything the media says
Joseph, weak executive experience? I strongly beg to differ my friend. Obama acted as CEO in his campaign for president. He brilliantly executed a campaign that defeated the "heir apparent" HRC. He brilliantly organized a nation of grassroots supporters in collecting more campaign funds than anyone in the history of election campaigns (50 million dollars a month). He demonstrated sound judgement by not playing by the old rules of political campaigns and defeated someone who felt it was to be a coronation, not an election. He's managed senior executives of his campaign with the support of 24,000 selected campaign workers. He's engineered his "company" to receive the necessary votes to obtain the Democratic nomination for president.
Recognize that not all experience is necessary from holding political office. Obama has made history in more ways than one. His chief claim can be said to be, "He engineered the greatest upset in political campaign history, using his skills obtained as a community organizer, successful terms as a State Senator in Illinois and now his current position as the Senator from Illinois. May I introduce to you, the man who out politicked one of the greatest politicians (Bill Clinton) in modern history. Joseph, meet Barak Obama, the next president of the United States.
Like it or not Joseph, the next POTUS will be Obama, a half black, half white man who grew up in poverty and excelled through Harvard. He also became president of the Harvard Law Review. Show me where Palin or McCain have nearly those accomplishments. (McCain admits he was a slacker in Annapolis, 2nd from the bottom of his class, admits he was a womanizer and divorced his first wife, married his second before his divorce was final.) From poverty (mother on food stamps) to President, that shows more than Palin or McCain can lay claim to.
It's your choice Joseph, vote for more war, more elimination of the middle class and more corruption in Washington (Palin is under investigation and McCain profited from the Keating S&L scandal), or choose a man who has shown integrity through the tough battle with HRC. Your decision will show how sound of judgement you have.
Sounds like some queen bee syndrome going on here, maybe she's too attractive to be taken seriously or respected by other women.
Al (do as I say not as I do) Gore as Sec. of Energy? How fast does the meter spin at his house?
Personally I love the choice, you don't have to be a pants suit wearing Washington insider to be a strong, smart female VP.
but you also don't need to live in the stone ages on women's issues...
don't accuse us of being jealous of her bc she is not fit to be VP.. let alone step in and be POTUS!!!
You people make me sick thinking women are monolithic and we will just vote bc she has a vagina....
She has admitted that she knows very little about the Iraq war. Do you really think she is going to be spending the next two months researching it? No, she will be out on the campaign trail trying to win the election.
Okay, imagine McCain wins and then keels over the next day. We're going to have sit around waiting for her to learn about the war before she can make any decisions. Or even worse, we're going to have her making uninformed decisions about something that is life or death.
And with her "maverick" "reformer" stuff I think its safe to say that she might alienate those in Washington right off the bat. Those adjectives were something to be admired in McCain because he is a veteran lawmaker and everyone has witnessed his abilities and weaknesses. Is Sarah Palin going to show up in D.C. and root out corrupt politicians? How many republicans are going to go down in her epic battle against corruption? Don't we have more pressing issues right now than trying to figure out who's the good guys and bad guys who were elected to office? And does she have the backbone to really call out corruption where it is? Because its like 75% of the house and senate has at least one thing that is questionable. Not as obvious as getting your brother in law fired, but still.
How could McCain have put this country in such danger? Sure, she may turn out to be incredible. But shouldn't he have gone with the sure thing? I never liked Mitt Romney very much but now I wish more than ever that he'd been chosen.
She may be smart, she may be capable. But, fact of the matter is I don't know, because I will only be exposed to her at this convention and one vp debate. I don't have, the country doesn't have, the benefit of seeing how she runs a campaign. The municipal duties of that small town she was mayor to are laughable compared to the mess this country is in. It concerns me that she actually asked.....what does the VP do everyday? It concerns me that she said she didn't know much about the war, but her child is being deployed soon. It concerns me that there is an ethics investigation against her right now that is going to conveniently be swept under a rug...and by the way, If her brother-in-law did all of those horrific things, I am all for hauling him to jail-but seems like your first response would be to have him arrested, not fired.
It concerns me that John McCain only spoke to her once and feels picking her is doing the best thing for our country or does he really feel its the best thing to win votes. Fact! Over 30% (31.8 to be exact) of the vp's in our country's history have prematurely inherited the office. And, while none of us know when our day will come, chances are greater that John McCain 72 year old skin cancer and torture survivor, will go before Barrack Obama making his VP pick even more important!
If this country were sailing along in good times with a balanced budget and ample jobs, maybe I wouldn't be as worried. If our educational system weren't pumping out intellectually capable but world competitive incapable students, I wouldn't be worried. If major banks were not on the brink of failure, I wouldn't be worried. If it didn't look like we may be on the verge on another cold war with Russia, an unstable Pakistan and growing concerns with Iran, I wouldn't be worried. But...that is not the case and I am worried.
And to make it clear I am not a Republican or a Democrat ---I am a registered, Independent Very Attractive, educated woman. I am not impressed with this! I pray the American people are not this stupid. This is not a game. There were other capable women, with better backgrounds!
I am not a fan of Hillary, but if I were her I would be livid that my 35 years of exemplary education, hard work and the hard fought campaign she just went through opened the door for this lightweight!
Wake-up Women! Wake-up America! Vote your issues, not foolishness!
I can't believe that Obama's group is complaining about Palen's lack of experience. She has executive, as governor, making decisions whereas he has senatorial, listening to others make speeches voting "present". She has integrity with her beliefs; Obama is all over the place, haven't a clue what he really believes.
Funniest pro Obama comment "he looks presidential" That must mean that if I look like an accountant or engineer, I am one" DUH?????
you might want to spell her name right... PALIN
And secondly... she is not fit to be anything but Gov of Alaska....
she cannot lead troops through these wars because she has already admitted she knows NOTHING about them....
get real! I hope you don't have anyone over there in harms way.... I do, and I am disgusted that McCain would really leave the lives of our troops in Workout Barbie's hands
To Suzanne: lack of experience is one thing, lack of knowledge coupled with lack of experience is an entirely different ballgame.
Exactly! Lack of Experience coupled with Lack of Knowledge is worse.
Where is the difference, between GOP and Dems, is what I don't see. Nor Governor nor Senator nor Rep nor White House aid give you Foreign Policy experience... a career in Diplomacy would, but has any of the candidates on either ticket been a Diplomat, Consul or Ambassador? Another one would be to have been the President or VicePresident... and few other options... too few
But I would like to see any of the people that supported the Dem candidate saying AGAIN that he "is not one of the boys in Washington", "he brings new air", "he is not playing by the negotiated rules made in DC", "other presidents didn't have experience and turned out to be great!"... etc... etc... etc...
While I am undeniably amused by this pick... I must confess I never expected to see all this buzzing. It was a move that went direct to the heart of the "Change we can Believe in" thingy.
Oh! And by the way... she might be UNDER INVESTIGATION, she hasn't been found guilty of anything, just yet... You cannot start throwing stones just because you believe that she did, in fact, got her former brother-in-law fired. Maybe his performance was bad before he became "ex-brother-in-law" or he is trying to get some money from the system... or, YES, IT MAY BE that she wanted to get him fired after her sister and him got divorced... I don't know for sure and I don't believe that I can start either defending her or throwing mud at her for something is under investigation.
And, based on my research, there were ethical behavior lawsuits filed against her there. The work she has done so far for Alaska pales in comparison to what she might be faced with:
1. The largest banking crisis since the Great Depression
2. Potential issues with Russia, Pakistan & Iran
3. A Falling Dollar
4. The largest deficit ever
5. A growing unemployment rate
6. Growing high school drop out rate
7. Housing Crisis...to name a few
It concerns me that her educational background is a BS in Journalism from the University Of Idaho. Not to say that isn't a good school or a respectable major, but I can't even look at that for a little reassurance that she is capable in effectively making decisions on policy for 300 million + US citizens, nor do I have a clear track record to analyze.
And not to bore everyone on this blog...but do your homework. She has made some policy decisions for Alaska on energy, but it is unclear what she has done or could do for its economy. And, never mind the she cut spending in Wissilla by 40% as mayor. Look, what was the beginning budget people. If I bring my lunch to work versus taking a Lean Cuisine...I cut my spending by 75% ....of a $10 lunch budget!
Why is this important, why is she being held to this scrutiny. Because one I am an American and this is my country. Two, McCain is a 72 year old torture and skin cancer survivor, making it more likely of unfortunate death happening to him while in office (God Forbid.....I don't want that to happen, but it is a reality). And, over 30% of the VP's in this nation's history have inherited the Oval Office!
Let me also be clear, I am a female registered Independent, hard working American-who was undecided. Those are my demographics.
The one thing that I can say for Obama, he had enough since to listen to the concerns of the American people and go and find a running mate that would assure THEM. Where he lacks in "executive" experience, I have seen him create a campaign that is considered by every party to be revolutionary, so he obviously knows how to run something substansial (estimated value by the end of the campaign 1/2 a billion dollars). He went to excellent schools for undergraduate and law, with a list of accomplishments from both.....
I can do the same thing for Joe Biden, I can do the same thing for John McCain, and I needed to do the same thing for John McCain's running mate! This country has too much at stake and quite frankly this angered me as a woman! If you want my vote, bring me someone with more meat somewhere, anywhere and it better not be a damn Moose that Ms. Palin hunted either!
Nakima, I want to thank you and give your praise for your statements on this blogg. As an American, I too worry about Palin. I'm concerned about what she will do to destroy a woman's right to choose, since she and McInsane want to throw out Rowe v. Wade. Her parenting skills also appear to have been put on the back burner with two problem children. One, on his way to Irag and the second one, a 17 yr old female, purported to be carrying her second child (rumor has it). And if the Palin's are covering that up claiming to be the parent of the poor child born with Down Syndrome, what does that say about her moral character? It's a typical Republican ploy, lie about the truth and fabricate everything else.
As for McInsane, he's already showing signs of senility and maybe Alzheimer's as well. When Lieberman has to tell him the difference between a Shiite and a Sunni, he's living back in the days of Vietnam, they all look alike. I hope people remember the Manchurian Candidate and see the similarities between the main character and McCain. Brainwashing is powerful tool.
As for McCain, he didn't earn his way into Annapolis. He used influence to get in. Same with the War College. In both cases he was less than a mediocre student. I also have a problem with a man who leaves a seriously injured wife for a millionairess. Especially one who waited for him to return from the Hanoi Hilton and was faithful to him. Any man who calls his wife a "C", a trollop and a slut in front of the press, needs to be checked for intelligence and common decency. Americans who are supporting him need to be checked as well. If you saw the CNN special, McCain Exposed, it should raise questions on this mans ethic and moral integrity. If you also remember the Keating S&L scandal, McCain was a part of it.
I value a man who has earned his way, not gained his way via influence. McCain has not earned his way, but used the influence of his sphere of associates and connections to get where he is. Obama has earned his way to the top and that, above all, deserves attention by the voting masses. Palin, in my humble opinion, is McCain's pander for the woman's vote. She has not the skills needed to run this country with the number of problems you've so eloquently pointed out. (The population of the state she is governor of doesn't match the population of San Francisco.) The fact that she was for the "Bridge to Nowhere" until it became politically incorrect should say something about her "ethics". The fact that the money ($270 million) earmarked for this bridge still has not been returned to the tax payers should also tell you something about her "ethics".
Thank you Nakima for having a voice of reason. I've read too many attacks on Obama and am sick and tired of people berating him without doing their homework. This government, under the auspices of the Republican party, has sunk America to a new low. Our economy is in the toilet while companies are reporting record high profits. Does anyone think McCain-Palin will change any of that? I hope they don't. Notice the pure BS they've spouted in their attack on Obama-Biden. Nothing Thompson, Guiliani or Huckabee has said will stand the test of fire, never the less, the heat from a can of sterno. Republicans know they've lost the Whitehouse. Now they just want to pull everyone else down to their level, lower that pig excrement. Bad part about this is many American's have bought the farm while the cows and chickens has escaped (Bush-Chaney).
If we want to stay in conflict, as the Repulicans do, then vote McInsane-Palin. The blind will lead the blind and surely, both will fall into the ditch dragging the American populace with them.
Forgive them father for they do not know what dangers ally ahead of them. Retract that. They know, they just hate that Obama-Biden will straighten this crap out, over time.
Two new campaign slogans for the McCain-Palin ticket:
Palin-Let your babies have babies!
McCain-Breed them for the war!
Obama-Biden 08-12.
Is McCain out of his mind? His selection of an unknown, 44 year old, self-proclaimed "Hockey Mom" is so over the top, it makes you wonder what he and his advisors are smoking. McCain could be her grandfather. Do they really think that Sarah Palin's reactionary views on abortion and evolution are going to play well to Hillary Clinton's supporters? Unbelievable...............I am one woman who will be glad to wait for someone with substance to shatter the glass ceiling that Sen. Clinton cracked. But got to admit that it should be fun to watch Joe Biden shred Gov. Palin in the debates.
Iowa Hunter, you say -"Personally I love the choice, you don't have to be a pants suit wearing Washington insider to be a strong, smart female VP." ARE YOU ON DRUGS??? How do you have any idea how strong and smart she is, she hasn't done anything! I think there are more moose in Alaska than there are people, not a real tough state to handle, for a whole year and a half. Obama has a Harvard Law degree, he has worked in government in a big city, a big state and in Washington. He has traveled the world and met with world leaders. He has voted on national issues and dealt with Washington politics. And how this woman could even be mentioned in the same breath with Hillary is beyond me, PANTSUITS RULE!
Don't worry, no one is going to take your precious guns away from you. My husband is a lifetime hunter and refuses to join the NRA because they are a bunch of radicals. The GOP'ers keep saying Palin is a "maverick". Is that a good thing? I'm all for change, but she's going to tell me as a woman whether or not I can have a medical procedure I choose to have, and then put an AK47 in the hands of everyone in my neighborhood? No thanks, I'll pass, and the rest of America cannot be that stupid either. If I have to endure this witch then I'm moving to Canada.
I think there are more moose in Alaska than there are people, not a real tough state to handle, for a whole year and a half. Obama has a Harvard Law degree, he has worked in government in a big city, a big state and in Washington
__________________________________________
And there is his problem right there. He has been in Washington with his party in control of a Congress that has a lower approval rating then president bush
As for a big state 3 Il can fit inside of Alaska as for Biden Alaska is 500 times the size of his state so size is not a matter
as for Obama having a law degree you can have a degree and still be an educated idiot which he is
As for that procedure you are talking about that choice is not up to you it is up to God
as for moving to Canada my sis's husband is from Canada and he loves it here shoot if you don;t like here i will buy you a ticket there
have a nice day
McCain/ Palin 08
Joseph, if your sister is raped by an Arab, would you still desire her to go full term? If the child has less than 10% chance of living a year, is that Gods will?
Get your head out of your rectum please. George Dummya had neither a law degree or common sense and people like you put him in office, twice. Even though you knew the second election was rigged just like the first one. Bankrupted two companies and a baseball team. You thrive in a corrupt society until it knocks on your door. Had your phone checked lately? Received mail that was opened? I guess you like the government spying on you. McCain-Palin, more of the same. Lies, deceit, corruption and more violations of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. Oh, you say, what are those? Whose the idiot?
The good news is: She will step down from governorship and allow someone more competant to step in, that will help Alaska more than her becoming the VP of America!
Question: What if we go through this whole 'hype' of her selection and then during the GOP convention McCain selects someone else? She has only been "tapped" she has not been nominated nor accepted by the GOP! Then what?
