Bush treated to Marines parade

President Bush witnessed cannons firing, guns flinging and heavy marching at a Marines parade Friday night while visiting their barracks.

The president and his wife Laura arrived at dusk at the Marine Barracks Washington, the oldest active post of the Marine Corps, and sat front row at the football field-shaped pavilion. They and the 3,100-member audience watched lines of Marines stream onto the field in dark jackets and white pants, marching and pounding their steel-plated rifle butts on the concrete as they showed off their polished, synchronized movements.

Bush, sitting next to Gen. James Conway, commandant of the Marine Corps, also faced a semicircle of the U.S. Marine Band during the event as the musicians' horns and percussion instruments performed a series of marches and numbers. The roar of firing cannons filled the air after the band played "Ode to Joy."

Toward the show's end, the president heard the "Star-Spangled Banner" and then greeted Marines on the field. The Marines host a show every Friday night during the summer, with the president's visit coming on the last performance of the season.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

"President Bush witnessed cannons firing, guns flinging and heavy marching..."

Wow... that's already more combat action than he ever saw in the National Guard.

Excellent point, waynester! Besides, I didn't think liberals 'respected' or 'cared' about military service. All that matters are the "issues".... right? So why does it matter that he saw combat or not?

Meanwhile, my Marine Corps son texts home that he is out in the swampy bush in North Carolina, lost with three of his buddies, bleeding and being eaten alive by bugs. Semper fi, boys.

Quite a contrast with the way Clinton was regarded by the Marines. They did only what was required by the UCMJ.
