COLUMBUS — A prosecutor says the Ohio Parole Board has thrown out a bid for clemency for a death row inmate facing execution next month.
Summit County, Ohio, Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh says the board unanimously rejected the request for mercy from condemned killer Richard Cooey.
Cooey claims in a separate federal court lawsuit that he is too fat to be humanely executed by injection.
Tuesday's parole board ruling was on a defense claim that Cooey received poor legal help during his trial and later appeals.
Prosecutor Walsh says the parole board could not find a sufficient and justifiable basis for sparing Cooey, who was sentenced to die for raping and murdering two young women.
