WEST ST PAUL — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's husband, Todd, twice registered as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a fierce states' rights group that wants to turn all federal lands in Alaska back to the state. Sarah Palin herself was never a member of the party, according to state officials.
Todd Palin's party affiliation emerged Tuesday as the latest issue confronting the McCain campaign as it prepared to introduce Gov. Palin to the Republican National Convention.
The McCain campaign on Tuesday forcefully worked to tamp down questions about Sarah Palin's association with the Independence Party and with former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan that were being raised by Democrats, Internet bloggers and even Independence Party officials.
Voter registration records and past news reports, however, show Palin never registered as a member of the Independence Party, and backed Steve Forbes' presidential campaign in 2000, not Buchanan.
"Supporters of Barack Obama are engaged in an unfortunate and nasty smear campaign," McCain spokesman Brian Rogers said, specifically citing issues related to Palin's politics.
Gail Fenumiai, director of the Alaska Division of Elections, said Todd Palin twice registered under the Alaskan Independence Party — in 1995 and 2000. Some party leaders have advocated secession from the United States, though that is not a goal listed in the party's platform.
Voter registration records show Sarah Palin registered in May 1982 as a member of the Republican Party and has not changed her affiliation. Todd Palin has been registered undeclared since 2002, Fenumiai said.
Palin did address the Alaskan Independence Party's state convention by video earlier this year, welcoming the party to Fairbanks.
"Your party plays an important role in our state's politics," she said in the video, which is posted on the party's Web site. "I've always said that competition is so good, and that applies to political parties as well."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton objected to Rogers's accusation of a smear. He pointed to comments by Lynette Clark, the chairman of the AIP, who told ABC News that Palin and her husband, Todd, belonged to the party in 1994.
Obama advisers and surrogates have linked Palin to conservative former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan. An Associated Press story from Alaska, dated July 17, 1999, stated that Palin, then the mayor of the small town of Wasilla, was wearing a Buchanan button during a Buchanan visit to Alaska.
But in a letter to the Anchorage Daily News a week later, Palin wrote: "When presidential candidates visit our community, I am always happy to meet them. I'll even put on their button when handed one as a polite gesture of respect. ... The article may have left your readers with the perception that I am endorsing this candidate, as opposed to welcoming his visit to Wasilla."
A week after that, the Associated Press reported that Palin would serve as a co-chair of Forbes' campaign.
Buchanan himself told MSNBC's Chris Matthews last week that Palin "was a brigadier in 1996 as was her husband ... They were at a fundraiser for me, she's a terrific gal, she's a rebel reformer."
McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb disputed Buchanan's claim, saying Palin supported Forbes in 1996 as well.
The Miami Herald this week quoted an e-mail from Obama Florida spokesman Mark Bubriski that stated: "Palin was a supporter of Pat Buchanan, a right-winger or as many Jews call him: a Nazi sympathizer."

Associated Press Writer Anne Sutton in Juneau contributed to this report.
The whole tone is just Poppa John rallying the troops and coming to the defense of this poor woman trying to do her job. Can you IMAGINE the Democrats and their lack of compassion?
Pardon me while I vomit.
As a former Arizonan I always resented the fact that McCain would not fight for federal money his own State, as it didn't stop it from being spent...primarily by Ted Stevens and Alaska. Perhaps there is more to be investigated here.
The campaign is now both of them so it's not McCain defending her it's their team defending itself. There is no compassion attached either, it's a matter of silly smears like calling her a Nazi and outright lies like saying she faked a pregnancy. They are asking the Obama campaign/supporters to grow up not exhibit a conscience (or a sense of irony though that would be the most amusing). I'm not convinced either is possible but I'm not the one asking.
McCain made a bad VP pick, and now the chickens are coming home to roost. Sarah Palin is a cornucopia of "issues" upon which the media is feasting. McCain's pathetic attempts to blame liberals for smearing Palin are laughable. If McCain is smart, he'll cut his losses and get Palin off the ticket now. She's become too big an albatross for McCain.
The GOP have been the biggest hyppocrites over the last 8 years (includes torture, bogus war on terror, homeland insecurity, sending soldiers to their death on lies and deceit, killing of millions of people worldwide in support of neo-con armageddon).
Palin's private life is nobody's business, but when she runs on a platform of ignorance and falls prey to her own words then I think it's time we sent a Costco size box of condoms to the McCain campaign and tell them to keep the baby, but abort the candidate!

These damn chickens are roosting everywhere.
I like the way the GOP has re-framed the issue of the pregnancy. Suddenly it's all about whether or not Bristol has the right to have the baby, which nobody doubts she does.
The real issue is that to be a vehement opponent of birth control in any form, and to support "abstinence-only" sex-ed in schools, and then to have your daughter turn up pregnant, well, that says something.
It's true what the GOP is saying, that "it happens in all families," and nobody that I've heard is contradicting that. But Abstinence-only education does not work, and it never will, and here is the best proof you could ever hope for. If this woman couldn't keep her daughter from getting "in trouble," then what hope does anyone else have?
This is just one example of Palin's flawed policy. It's not a personal attack, it's a policy attack.
McCain made a fine VP pick. States Rights are very important to conservatives. There is nothing wrong with her husband having been a member of a pro-States Rights party. Good for him.
And all this talk about Buchanan--first of all, back in the 90's there wasn't much out about his feelings toward Jews, etc. He was just old-school. Now all that's changing.
Ditto... This furious search for skeletons is tiring.
What this article is trying to say, if you are independent, vote like Sarah palin's husband.
OMG, the endless cheap politics of the GOP.
There is nothing wrong with her husband having been a member of a pro-States Rights party. Good for him.
Didn't the Confederacy call itself pro-state's rights?
Some members of the party have advocated secession from the United States, though that is not a goal listed in the party's platform.
Maybe not in their platform, but it's sure listed on the front page of their site. From the AIP website:
ALASKA FIRST!
Until we as Alaskans receive our Ultimate Goal, the AIP will continue to strive to make Alaska a better place to live with less government interference in our everyday lives.
The Alaskan Independence Party's goal is the vote we were entitled to in 1958, one choice from among the following four alternatives:
1) Remain a Territory. 2) Become a separate and Independent Nation. 3) Accept Commonwealth status. 4) Become a State.
They claim that they were wrongly denied the right to vote on their statehood, and merely ask for that vote.
Although it is widely thought to be a secessionist movement, the Party makes great effort to emphasize that its primary goal is merely a vote on secession, something that Party advocates say Alaskans were denied during the founding of the state. A plebiscite was, in fact, held in Alaska at the state's inception in 1958, but AIP members argue that voting was corrupt and that residents were not given the proper choice between statehood, commonwealth status, or complete separation -- something they say has been granted to other U.S. territories such as Puerto Rico.
Hell, I say if they were deprived of their rights, then give them the vote and let them do what they want. If that be secession, then the Palin VP pick won't be so much of a problem anymore.
Didn't the Confederacy call itself pro-state's rights?
Oh my G*d I hope you aren't seriously equating the Republican party with the Confederacy.
The confederacy is so 143 years ago, Tappy. Don't make me laugh with that kind of nonsense.
Many racists have hidden their true colors behind a banner of "state's rights."
Palin may not be a racist... but living in Alaska it begs the question if she's ever even seen a black person.
No it doesn't.
Good rebuttal.
3.7% of Alaskans are black. (census bureau)
Kind of makes me think how much experience she has had with minority issues...
I do think that the fact tht you are a member of an organization that wants to withdraw from the union is a little strange. I mean the way this group of people in Alaska use indepence is not the same way independents use the term in the lower 48. They don't just want states rights they want to become their own country. If the don't want to be a part of America doesn't it imply that they probably hate America. I saw one gentleman from this group say that he doesn't consider himself an American but an Alaskan.
Sigh, it is not racist... it's a matter of fact that someone who does not have experience with minority issues will be less receptive to them... then again, even if she was Governor of a bible-belt state, she would still only have 18 months of experience.
You can continue to argue with me here, but the fact remains that someone who has little to no experience with minority issues (minus Alaska natives who you so lovingling referred to as "eskimos" who are almost entirely located in Alaska and Canada) will be less capable of dealing with these issues.
Or you can stop and just accept that her lack of experience in ALL AREAS is horribly sub-par and referring to yourself as "pro-state's rights" is a horribly out dated term that Republicans don't even speak of in most states. ALSO, the last "state's rights" case in recent history is Georgia's fight to remove the "stars and bars" from their state flag.
In reference to #1.6, the GOP is saying in happens in all families, but when they condemn welfare recipients, their tone is different. They have an accusatory attitude toward low income people and their choices about having children. Their rhetoric is "they only do it for the welfare check." If you're a well heeled white, then you are making a pro-life choice.
I did some research on the AIP. The AIP talked really badly about the United States and talked about seceding from the United States. That sounds pretty "unAmerican" to me. Pretty "unPatriotic"...get my drift.
Let's see if the Palins will be granted the same grace Senator Obama and Michelle were NOT granted.
Have we even noticed that yesterday reported both Todd and Sarah were registered with Alaskan Independence Party -- both want federal lands back from Washington. Is this a conflict of interest for McCain -- local and individual independence vs. federal Oil rights?
Palin may not be a racist... but living in Alaska it begs the question if she's ever even seen a black person.
First of all, respectfully, that is a ridiculous notion that there are no black people in Alaska. There are not many, but I am certain she has seen many there who are indeed residents of the state. EVEN if she had not seen any people of African decent there, she is a well traveled woman and I am certain she has seen many a black folk elsewhere.
Samantha's random thought for the day: ...if she had NEVER seen a black person with her own eyes, how does that make her less qualified?
It would certainly raise questions on her ability to lead a country that is increasingly more minority than majority. It would raise questions on her policies with regards to immigration and equal pay, etc.
But any assertion that Sarah Palin has never seen a black person before is ridiculous. First of all, she went to college in Idaho (not that there's a lot of black people in Idaho either, but), and she did a semester in Hawaii.
Have you ever been to Seattle? That's one of the most liberal places in the country and there's hardly any black folks there.
Your ability to understand and care about minority issues isn't directly related to your vicinity to a large number of those minorities. How many of these rich white politicians in highly diverse cities do you think actually hang out with minority folks?
There are plenty of ethnic cultures living in Alaska and they include: black, alaskan native, native american, japanese, filipino, korean, hawaiian natives, pacific islanders, along with people of hispanic and latin american origins (mexico, latin america, puerto rico, cuban). Whites are primarily comprised of german and irish. There are also a large population of foreign born people living there. (census bureau data is as of 2000)
That looks like a pretty diverse population to me!
obviously the comment that she has never seen a black person was tongue-in-cheek and was meant in jest.
According to Wikipedia, .59% of the population of Wasilla is African-American.
Your ability to understand and care about minority issues isn't directly related to your vicinity to a large number of those minorities.
Sarah Palin's job has never required that she understand and care about minority issues, especially as it relates to the rest of the country. That's all my point was. I'm not saying that she's racist or that she doesn't know anything about black people. I'm saying she doesn't have any experience dealing with issues that concern minorities, and she doesn't have any credibility when it comes to immigration, civil rights, etc.

Exactly Superman. It's the same reason that she has no credibility with issues of international affairs... it's not that she isn't smart enough to understand the challenges, it is that she is completely unproven in these fields. (unless you ask Cindy McCain who feels that because her state is geographically close to Russia that she inherently understands Russia... smart lady)
LOL! How's that Juno Vote working for you?
gettin' those 3 electoral votes, yo. Watch out.
Juno is the Roman equivalent of Hera, the goddess who was married to Zeus in Greek mythology as well -- not always 'just a movie about life' :)
I didn't know McCain was courting the Roman goddess vote... sounds ambitious! :p
LOL!
Wow...saying the Dems are smearing her...and this from the party of ROVE...who is the KING OF SMEARS!!! Does anyone remember what the Bush campaign did to McCain in 2000? GUESS THEY CAN DISH IT OUT BUT THEY CAN'T TAKE IT!!
Just cause the other side did it first doesn't make it right.
Its no a smear in any way. She was at the 1994 convention. She was wearing a Buchanan button. Strangely the third largest political party in Alaska has no records of members in 1994?
These are smears. Mr Rove at work
Bush Waged Nasty Smear Campaign Against McCain in 2000
Bush Supporters Called McCain "The Fag Candidate." In South Carolina, Bush supporters circulated church fliers that labeled McCain "the fag candidate." Columnist Frank Rich noted that the fliers were distributed "even as Bush subtly reinforced that message by indicating he wouldn't hire openly gay people for his administration."
Bush Campaign Used Code Words to Question McCain's Temper.
"A smear campaign of the ugliest sort is now coursing through the contest for the presidency in 2000. Using the code word "temper," a group of Senate Republicans, and at least some outriders of the George W. Bush campaign, are spreading the word that John McCain is unstable. The subtext, also suggested in this whispering campaign, is that he returned from 5 1/2 years as a POW in North Vietnam with a loose screw. And it is bruited about that he shouldn't be entrusted with nuclear weapons."
So is smear is okay? Why not retaliate with "Real Change" or is it "Real - More of the Same"? Legitimate question. I'm not defending either side or defending either of these broken parties. Frankly, your argument or response is preposterous. I have young children using that argument from time to time and I don't accept it from them. At least you see the dishonesty and as being equal on both sides. Instead of bashing one party or the other, why not promote Real- "Real Change". This whole election is as usual all about nothing (illusion, smear, slander and childish retort). Instead of becoming embroiled in the lunacy why not find intelligent arguments to promote real change if you see the hypocrisy? Have you thrown in the towel and given up hope for a legitimate discussion between people in politics? Can't you find a candidate or promote one that isn't a in this fray and wants Real- "Real Change". It is wearying to see the electorate defend the indefensible. Two thugs beating each other up in the public square so instead of offering a solution we take up with one of them? Isn't that what you are doing? Nothing will change if we the voters continue to "pick a thug" because we are told our vote won't count if we don't. That's all we have to choose from. Food for thought...
I think that if McCain would have properly vetted Palin than the American people and media would not have to do it for him. You don't pick an unknown an then expect people not to question them.
McCain has hired the smear expert attorneys that destroyed his nomination attempts in 2000. Now this formerly honorable man has become the same as George W. Bush.
I have lost all respect for McCain and the Republican party.
Stop another 8 years of the decay of neo-con republican mismanagement!
i still can't say anyone has any reall dirt on this lady. oboma's camp is really reaching. i still don't know who is the lesser of the 2 evils.
You must just be listening to FOX News. Obama's campaign didn't choose Palin as McCains running mate! What is in her past must come out and now. Her views must be known. Look at what the republicans did to John Kerry with the swift boaters. Give me a break. If I were part of the Obama campaign I would be loving it and going after everything I can find - without going after the children. But you still have to go after her ideals - no sex before marriage and no sex education or prevention equals: baby for Palin's daughter. That can be talked about. The "abstain from sex until married" and "no condoms in schools" are the question. The dems should go after them on that.
Maxk, her views must be known? They have focused on her family. Not her views. The Dems have shown very little class. Also, I really hope this is the big turning point in which the people of the US figure out the the media is just free campaigning for the Dems.
That's because no one will tune in to her views. They summed those up in about five seconds with six or seven positions called "pro-_____". I've seen maybe three minutes of TV news coverage on Palin and I can tell you from that she's pro-NRA-style gun rights, pro-life (the Internet tells me she's anti-abortion with no exceptions), pro-drilling, and I can't recall the others right off hand. You think people will watch 24/7 news coverage of "Sarah Palin's Political Stances?"
Those are the only things you choose to hear.
Also, I really hope this is the big turning point in which the people of the US figure out the the media is just free campaigning for the Dems.
check out Andrew Tyndall's blog,
he's a conservative who does research on this stuff, finds that the media pretty consistently gives McCain a higher percentage of favorable comments than Obama.
Maxk, her views must be known? They have focused on her family. Not her views. The Dems have shown very little class. Also, I really hope this is the big turning point in which the people of the US figure out the the media is just free campaigning for the Dems.
"The Dems" are not uncovering this stuff. The Media is. The same media that took a long bath in the Reverend Wright tapes, and the same media that dug up Joe Biden's ties to credit card companies the day after he was announced. This is what they do, and they do it for all of us.
If you choose to vote for her despite the fact that...
a) she says she's against earmarks, but she regularly asked for and received them when she was mayor.
b) she said that she was against the "Road to nowhere," but the record shows that she supported it before the political winds turned and she was against it
c) she has abused her power more than once, not only with "Troopergate" but by threatening the jobs of officials in the town where she was mayor because they didn't support her candidacy
d) Republican officials in Alaska, including in her home town where she was mayor, are on the record that she's not even prepared to be governor, much less VP, much less President
e) she has longstanding ties with Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, who is the subject of ethics investigations for misuse of power
...Then go ahead. Just don't condemn the media for giving me that information, which I shall use to not vote for her, and to attempt to convince others to do the same.
Ryan339660, the dems have shown great restraint and class. Trying to pin statements on the dems is another political ploy to try to discredit. They don't need any help the republicans are very crafty in destroying themselves trying to step on others heads. Wake up and think with an open mind.....not a political eye.
loosecannon, if you don't think she is prepared, please tell me what expierence Obama has then. Obama has never lead anything in his life.
Also, the Dems are uncovering this stuff, they are just feeding it to the left wing main stream media.
Obama has never lead anything in his life
Umm.. except for the Harvard Law Review, and a classroom at UC in which he was a law professor, and that whole community organizer thing, and the campaign, in which he leads 2,500 employees and over 2 million individual donors with a budget surpassing $50 million....
Also, the Dems are uncovering this stuff, they are just feeding it to the left wing main stream media.
Give us some sort of proof aside from just your republican fear-mongering... then I'll think about believing you. If anything Soon-to-be-President-elect Obama has done nothing but speak out against using family as a talking point. He doesn't have to resort to personal bashings because his policies are so much more cohesive than McCain's. You know you can run a policy-only campaign when both of your opponents have praised numbers of your propositions.
And even if it WAS (it's not) the Dems conspiring against Palin, it's hard to speak of anything but personal matters when nothing of substance has come from the red in over a week.
Well, I guess everyone in the media is Democratic now since some of you are complaining that the Democrats are responsible for Palin's past and present coming out. This is what the media does this. They run after stories. Palin isn't any more special than any other politician.
They will run this into the ground because this is what the media does.
...and they found out all of these things in under a week... I can't wait to hear what's next!
I find these attempts to discredit Palin weak and uninteresting. So what if she WERE part of the AIP (which there doesn't seem to be any credible proof)...there is nothing unethical or unconstitutional about their party. Do you blame Alaska for wanting to control it's own state? Texas still holds the right to sucede but you don't hear everyone complaining about that....every state should have the right to consider removing themselves from the union. That would motivate federal roles to better manage state issues so states don't want to leave! The fact that Palin was open to including and hearing from parties on all sides of an issue strikes of Abraham Lincoln's style - not afraid to have vehement opposition to his or her ideas to better represent the people. Honestly - have we forgotten how to debate respectfully? Is it all about sound bites and no substance? I don't see anything horrible about Palin in the above, do you?
let Texas leave - and take GDubya with it.
I could of sworn we had a whole war over this issue already. It is considered treason.
Sarah is playing with the big boys now. You do not have to be of a pary to go to their convention. I Also attended the convention when Bo Gritz was running for pres. He spoke at the convention. I also liked Joe Vogler. Lynette Clark is a long time member and I think she would remember Sarah. But that does not mean that Sarah was a member. I sure was not. After this mess secession looks better all the time. See then Sarah could be our presodemt. and everyone would be happy. (except me) I agree family is off limits. There is enough about Sarah to tlk about.
McCain is like the bully who attacked another kid and got his nose bloodied so he blames the kid who he was trying to beat up for starting the fight. She is listed as being present at the Alaskan independence party 1994 convention and welcoming them to the 2008 convention in Alaska. She also was pictured wearing a Buchanan button but her staff says she supported Steve Forbes. In my opinion either would have been a bad choice. The Independence party is the third largest political party in Alaska with a whopping 13000 members. So what!
The smell in this come from the fact they point to these two examples and not the others she is involved in which you can clarify easily via the web. This is just a feeble attack they hope to point to so the rest is over looked.
Palin was involved with a lot of shady deals such as supporting the "bridge to no where" and the firing of a state trooper for person, and family reasons.
Questions about the past of a person running for the second highest office in the country are not out of line, especially if they show corruption.
I agree that questions about the past of a person running for the second highest office in the country are not out of line.
jdoyle you are making a lot of assumptions that there is corruption where none has been proven. People dislike decisions made and will accuse a person of such. You are rare if all your purchases and deals went completely smoothly and no matter what you did you had EVERYONE's support. There are always people who do not like you, much not having to do with what you have done. Know facts. Just jumping on a bandwagon with a bunch of bullies beating up on one person without a purpose in mind shows how little minded you are. Sorry, we do not have the returning Christ running for office in order to have perfection.
When are we going to take back America? These are not the values that built this nation...The Republican party has changed in the last 15 years..THIS IS NOT WHAT OUR FOUNDATION WAS BUILT ON...WE ARE TURNNING INTO A BUNCH OF CRAZED LIBERALS...WHO ARE JUST OVERLOOKING THE FACTS...IS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY PULLING NAMES OUT OF THE HAT?? THIS IS AN EMBARASSMENT.
AND, YES I AM A REGISTERED REPUBLICAN...WHO DOESN'T KNOW WHO TO VOTE FOR....
If most Republicans really, take a step back and look at this Palin issue, you would see that this is not the actions of the TYPICAL Republican party...AND...That the Republican Party is so liberal now....WHEN ARE WE GOING TO TAKE BACK AMERICA...Ronald Reagan is probably rolling over in his grave, looking at these clowns that we have in power now..THIS REALLY LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING THAT JOHN KERRY WOULD HAVE DONE....NOT A REAL REPUBLICAN...THIS GET ME SICK...
Would you really vote for someone that you hold higher values on yourself???? For years I lived in a state the the politicians ran like it was their own personal piggy bank (Louisiana), in the Edwards years...Everyone complained but did absolutely nothing about it...Since I didn't want to raise my children in a state that didn't really care about education or the working class...I decided to move before I have children...Now, it's 21 years later...Should I be thinking about relocating out of the United States...WE NEED TO TAKE BACK AMERICA, AND THE FAMILY VALUES THAT OUR FOUNDING FATHERS PUT IN PLACE FOR US..
I am a moderate democrat and I have not been happy with the pool of candidates. My mother is a moderate republican and she is going to vote for the democratic ticket. She really cannot stand the policies that George Bush has embraced in the last 8 years; nor can I. That said, change is necessary for us to be globally competitive and vibrant as a nation. I think the change is going to come from "We The People" and Obama is the only agent we have to make that happen. So forget the Palin and McCain issue, keep focusing on the changes that will put us back on track. Remember that this presidential race is about engaging young voters to take on issues and responsibilities that the baby boomer generation have been facing. I was hoping that this newsvine posting would engage higher order thinking instead of tabloid smearing.
Palin may very well be McCain's sacrificial lamb in order to give him the chance to pretend to be indignant over the unfair treatment the meany democrats have given Palin.
We all know It was in fact Palin who offered her family and record up for the world to scrutinize.
Honestly, I can't believe any republican could possibly say the words "liberal hate monger" with out busting out in cynical laughter. The entire GOP has for decades fatuously worshiped Fox, Limbaugh, Beck, Savage and an entire dark army of the most villainous haters this planet has ever seen.
Romney did the same thing in the primary. Paid a secret company to air a religious attack ad against him so he could pretend to be righteously offended at the low levels his opponent would stoop to. Of course his staff blew it and the source of the add was leaked and it made him look like a total phony and helped him loose the primary.
But seriously the GOP picking Palin as VP makes me wonder if they are trying to through the election for some sinister reason that only Rove, Cheney and the Saudi's know right now.
Palin and the self destruction of the GOP may well be Rove's most evil ploy yet.
And since Bush hates McCain that may be just what Rove is up to. They feel it is hopeless so throw him to the dogs.
And @!$%# up the country at the last minute so they can spend four years blaming Obama and take back the White House in 2012. Don't forget that little fold.
I agree. I said this before. McCain is a scapegoat for the last 8 years. They had to throw someone to the dogs so they picked the guy that Bush hated and is too old to come back and get them later. I do not like Rove, but you gotta think this is his kind of plot... Also, they are also going to find out just how stupid and gullible the American People are. If McCain were to win, they would laughing their butts off. I would be sick. Stay Tuned...
Does anyone honestly think that Limbaugh would not be absolutely orgasmic if the tables were turned??? And the Republicans would be lighting up this forum with all kinds of nasty things. Mary Matalin would be all over the tube going after this situation. Let's see...who are the hypocrits now? Okay...so she has a 17 year old daughter who is 5 months pregnant. That alone would be cause for her to decline the nod from McCain. She is going to subject her daughter to all kinds of media/tabloid press. And she wants it to be private?? Come on...is anything private in politics these days? If she would have come clean with her secret from the get go instead of announcing it to the public on Monday...a day when Gustav coverage abounded, maybe it would have been a bit better. Maybe she thought it would be buried. And McCain knew also, he should have announced it earlier. I'm sorry, this is just ridiculous.
so she has a 17 year old daughter who is 5 months pregnant. That alone would be cause for her to decline the nod from McCain.
If I were in that situation, I'd turn down the VP offer.
No way would I put my kid through that kind of humilation and shame.
But then again, I'm a Democrat, maybe that's just too much putting of family first for others.
It's a simple case of "what goes around, comes around."
I'm not worried at all that McCain's choice of Palin will induce a swarm of Independents and women to vote for the GOP this fall. I think it will actually benefit the Obama campaign, so long as the voting public stays informed and evaluates both parties objectively. Then again, this is the same public that elected "W"...twice! (Be careful what you wish for...)
It is disgusting how Democrats and the media are treating Sarah Palin! First, they attack her experience which far surpasses Obama's! Now, they are attacking her because her daughter is pregnant. Well, I'm sorry she's a REAL person with REAL issues we all face in life- the good and the bad! With Sarah Palin we have an HONEST and REAL politician, maybe people aren't ready to vote for an honest person! It's ok for Obama to sit in his church for 20 years, to have dealings with convicted felon Tony Rezko,to have a relationship with terrorist Bill Ayers,to have zero experience, etc!!! I'm also sick of people attacking Democrats for supporting McCain! Hillary won almost all "Reagan Democrats". They are called that b/c they voted for Republicans in the past-they also voted for Bill Clinton twice! Most Republicans will tell you Sarah Palin reminds them of Ronald Reagan! If you ask Democrats, she's just an unqualified bimbo! It doesn't matter that she's the only one on either side to have executive experience! Most Presidents have been Governors while only two came directly form the Senate ! Polls show 1 out every 5 women who voted for Hillary voted for President Bush in 2004! Why weren't they sellouts to their gender and beliefs then? Also, I'm an Independent voter who voted for Hillary, and I don't agree with either Party on all the issues-- I vote for both Parties! The media will tell you Hillary never won any Independent voters! Also, Republicans who support Obama are called enlightened. It doesn't matter if they don't agree with ANY issue of his, they like the way he speaks and that is fine! African-American Republicans are voting for Obama and they say it's PRIDE! If you are a woman and vote for Sarah Palin b/c she's a woman you are apparently a stupid person who sells out her gender and shouldn't be allowed to vote! They say it's a disgrace! Funny how one is a disgrace and the other is PRIDE! The other thing the Democrats do is handcuff women with abortion! They use against them anytime they have any opposition to keep them at bay! I'm personally pro-life but I don't think abortion is going anywhere myself.Yes, that's right I'm personally pro-life and I voted for Hillary in the primary, no different than the many Republicans still supporting Obama! Democrats use the abortion scare tactic against women to tell them what to do about everything else! Democrats are SEXIST!!! I am disgusted and I hope more Clinton supporters come around and vote for McCain and AGAINST sexism! This is ridiculous!
McCain/Palin 08!! "Reforming Washington"
Wow...I feel your pain...McCain epitomized sexism by trying to Pander to Hillary supporters who he thought would be DUMB enough to vote for him.
ah slow down on the she has more experience story, she doesn't http://bondibox.newsvine.com/_news/2008/09/02/1815055-year-by-year-break-down-of-palin-obama-resumes
Obama cut the story at the very top when it came out so don't blame him either.
Picaso, Obama has played this type of politics his entire career. Look into the guy he ran against in Chicago for US Senate, why did he have to leave the race? Because Obama got into his personal life, which effected his kids. Obama has a track record of this kind of stuff. His version of "change" is Chicago thuggery. Obama will lose votes with these types of actions.
um...what has the republican party been doing lately?
"Look into the guy he ran against in Chicago for US Senate, why did he have to leave the race? Because Obama got into his personal life, which effected his kids."
is it really obama's fault that ryan's wife wasn't into the whole sex club scene?
They made the divorce papers public, they did not want to have the custody papers made public. But Obama and the Dems put political pressure on the judge and had them released. Ryan and his ex-wife did not want the files released, on the record. They wanted to keep this out of the public to protect their children.
It seems like Obama has a history of going after families. Classy guy he is. I hope they bury him for this kind of stuff.
It wasn't the sex parties that did Ryan in. Illinois State Republican Party Chairwoman Judy Baar Topinka asked him flatly whether there was anything embarrassing in the divorce papers. Ryan assured her nothing in those papers was embarrassing to him or to the Republican Party. After the papers were made public, Topinka said that Ryan had lied to her.
Ryan told a lie and got caught. That's what sunk his political career.
And yet you don't think it was wrong how she got on stage an basically said vote for me so I can break a glass ceiling. You seriously find it okay with a woman saying vote for me because I am a woman? Now if that ain't the gender card being played I don't know what is. I would love to see the media's reaction if Obama said, I'm black so vote for me so I can break my glass ceiling.
Last I checked Obama wasn't the one that ran to the press and told anyone this information.
Have you seen the Republican National Convention compared to the Democrat National Convention. All I see is a whole bunch of white men a handful of women and a few flakes of people from different ethnic backgrounds. Republicans who sided with the south on the civil rights issues really want to call someone sexist or racist. Please, don't go there.
First impression about Mrs. Palin is great: she is pretty, articulate and marketable. And a healthy woman candidate (the other, 'other' underdog minority), one with kids (America can relate), one almost half of McCain's age. On average the two won't die in the next four years! But she came so fast out of nowhere, INSTANT VP-candidate, perky and ready to run, but the sound-bites aren't really good. Teaching 'creationism'? Anti-abortion even in the case of rape and incest? Denial of human impact on the environment? What is next? Will she sponsor the banning Galileo's writings or advocate teaching 'flat earth science'? My excitement after seeing her speak the first few times has dissipated. If America wants to have another cringingly embarrassing actor on the world stage, she would be the one. Wow, first it was Gilligan and Mr. Howell who ran the country and now it's the Skipper and MaryAnn...
Clever thoughts.
haha. nice analogy
INTRADE accurately makes predictions and right now they are predicting a OBAMA WIN And Intrade is predicting a Palin withdraw
Palin's scandals just keeps getting better and better.
This story that she belonged to that Alaskan group is all over the net and first started by ABC news BUT as usual the REPUBLICAN SMEAR machine blamed Obama, Shock shock.
Nice try but it is NOT Obama's campaign it was ABC news, better get your LIES straight first.
Their Pres candidate showed extremely poor judgement and proved he is NOT FIT to be President again and again!
Better for the Dems IF Palin stays, she is a gift for the dems the gift that keeps on giving.
I really hope she stays, who knows what other scandals are lurking, how about an Oct surprise of yet another scandal?
Her candidacy guarantees and Obama win.
Did anyone see the new Newsweek cover from this week. Sarah Palin looks great and very Presidential standing next to John McCain. What was missing shocked me however. She had her requisite jewel encrusted flag pin, but Senator Bomb Bomb Iran didn't have one! I can't believe it. John McCain obviously is not a patriot. Sarah Palin should be on the top of the ticket. She had more executive experience than Senator McCain and obviously cares more about America.
My question is this. Where is McCain's experience argument now and by picking Palin, he really wanted Lieberman, without vetting her first then he has now squarely put the judgment issue on the table. This is classic McCain lashing out in anger when his first and second choices (Lieberman and Ridge) were deemed unacceptable by the conservative base, i.e. the religious right.
What I see is the Left/Liberal media bias doing what they actually do best, attack, discredit, and obfuscate. The Obama spokesman from Florida is trying to do watever he can to trash Sarah Palin. Don't fall for the crap, every politician has secrets, has a past, and the BHO camp has done everything to hide his past and his voting record. Palins records are out in the open and hiding nothing, unless you see or hear from the Looneys in Alaska who wish to discredit her.
Wake up and smell the politics, this is a presidential election, not an election for dog-catcher. It is times like these that I see the worst of American Politics, but then again we are a country founded on democratic principals and our fringe elements are doing the best they can to influence our normal politics.
Stop watching so much Fox News. You are full of it. The republican party is going down and rightly so. The non-stop smear campaigns run by the right wing has finally made America see the light. There will be so many new DEMOCRAT'S voting this year that it will be a landslide. People are fed up with you right-wingers. You have lied so much that now you are starting to believe them yourselves. Wake up dude. Get a grip. Palin is one of those "Looneys" from Alaska. Mayor of Wasilla to VP of the United States. LOL. give me a break...
Whose Kool-Aid are you drinking Max, the fringe elements of both parties are trying to tear the country apart, I don't like either of them. Yet here is my response to your FOX garbage, why don't yopu watch FOX, are you afraid of getting the truth from a media outlet. Let me guess, you thrive on CNN/MSNBC/NBC. DEMOCRATS don't exist anymore, they are a fiction of your imagination, I know I use to be one. You know a true Democrat of FDR and JFK, not the type that came upon this world with Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry and B. Hussein Obama, who by the way is not so much a DEMOCRAT as he is a Marxist/Socialist. So don't preach to me, look to your own party and understand that they no longer represent the good people of this country. If the Libertarian Party actually had a chance to win this election, I would vote for them, as it is, my choice is between BHO and McCain, no choice, McCain because he actually will protect this country.
Tell Me, what has BHO ever done to protect this country. Oh yes I forgot, he never served in the Military, he such great experience to protect us.
Lest we forget, Barack Hussein Obama is the least experienced candidate in this election. Read his record, review his so called accomplishments and understand, without the Chicago Bosses, he would still be "organizing" in Chicago.
Exactly this is not an election for a dog catcher that is exactly why each candidate including Sarah Palin is gone over with a fine tooth comb. If McCain would have done it like he was supposed to the American people and media would not have to.
I feel they are trying to trash her, but even if her husband belong to the third party that is his right and I can not see how that will effect how she does her job. How many people who are marry one is a Dem. and the other a Rep. People are stupid in there way of thinking if they feel her husband is even a factor in this election, he is not running for office she is.
Her husband is her closest associate, and if she did happen to become the president, he'd be the first spouse. I think that his political beliefs are fair game.
Let's knock off family, Sarah is the candidate -- this is only 15 years not 22.

McCain + Palin = Victory for Obama.
There is no alternative. Based on the little we know of Palin, it is obvious that true Hillary supporters would never cast a vote for her simply because of her sex. Palin is a staunch Republican with strong convictions that simply don't mesh with Hillary's message. If anything, I think that naming Palin as his prospective VP was the greatest thing McCain could have done for this country: he cinched it for the Democrats. Thanks, John. Now I can call you a hero.
McCain would have been better off as would the country had he chose Mit Romney as his running mate however he had to choose an unknown from Alaska the world had never heard of. Even if McCain did have a chance at winning he doesn't now. The Democrats don't have to take credit for McCain's mistake - he did this one all his own and Barak is being big enough to try and ask that we keep the kids out of this....... Personally any woman that can't encourage her daughter to keep her daughters legs closed is not a good role model for the rest of the women and children in this country.
If you can't build yourself up, tear your opponent down eh?
There are some basic, fundamental, blatantly obvious differences in the candidates. John McCain has lived far longer (and thus has had far more opportunity to leave his opinions and voting records around for the opposition to dissect them down to their original chemical elements (they don't understand quantum physics enough to do probability studies regarding particle spin though, so it is still unclear from on high if the cat-in-the-box lives, or dies this election.)
I personally like Obama, having been made aware of him years ago when he first was struggling to leap from city to state politics. Do I get a solid sense of his construction behind all the public facade yet? I'm not sure. Perhaps sensing this he selected his VP. Bidin' his time to give a sense of depth and experience to his ticket, fair dinkum....
John McCain has selected a youthful, energized, business-not-as-usual VP candidate cut from the same, less-than-perfect frontier-dwelling cloth to balance his ticket, bringing positive, reform-minded ideas to the campaign, just like the opposition.
You can't claim to embrace the change of Obama's vision and in the same breath reject Palin's track record for seeking fundamental change in government (I'm not voting on her to run my household by the way, so family life isn't the issue here).
You can't hold up the product of premarital sex as a Presidential candidate (wedding after inception after all) and scream murder because VP nominee Palin's daughter fell into the age-old biological trap the human race became successful (perhaps overly so) from. It isn't 'the sins of the opponent's mother fall upon the shoulders of the running-mate's daughter' after all....I know...I checked on Wikipedia!
I've had enough small-minded political rhetoric. Let's ask Bill Clinton if a person's private life has any effect on ability to govern? Let's ask Jimmy Carter if having less than perfect family members takes away from your capacity to serve the public. And let's ask Democratic Representative Patrick Kennedy of Rhode Island if a DUI conviction for a spouse, let alone a candidate....limits your ability to answer Kennedy's calling.....and do what you can for your country.
Great minds discuss ideas.
Common minds discuss news.
Small minds gossip about other people's business.
Which one are you?
Vote with your Cerebral Cortex, not your Medulla Oblongata, and hope against all odds that reciprocal altruism will prevail.
I like her hair better up than down...
Wait, is there anything else to this woman? Oh yeah, Alaska..sure right.
Go USA! I'm sure she's the best pick to lead our country - unless you feel VP is meaningless other than political marketing.
Ask her husband how he prefers her hair, he'll say between his.........
It's a smear to blame the discussion of free, American citizens on the Obama campaign, which has taken the high road in all of this. In fact, even some Obama supporters think all the pregnancy stuff should be off-limits!
This is just the same ol' same ol' GOP way of blaming THEIR bad decisions on their opponents.
Shame on them!
Obama took the high road right away, and I'd guess that some who pose as Democrats are the ones doing the smearing.
We could go on and on. Surely, our gas prices will go down just before the election. somehow, Republicans will take credit for that and try to make us forget that they were the ones who jacked them up. I hope Democrats are smart enough to say that if the Republican administration is able to make gas prices go down just before the election, then they must have been able to raise them in the months before.
Oh, there are many, many things the same old GOP will try. Don't count Cheny/Bush/Rove out of this election. They're there.
Ask her husband how he prefers her hair, he'll say between his.........
Hoah, what??
You don't need me to draw you a picture on that do you?
I think you are referring to the year 19 "69", right?
What is this, 'Animal House'? Grow up, boys. It frightens me that you're allowed to vote.
