An evolving GOP approach to family values?

WEST ST PAUL — Dan Quayle struck a nerve in 1992 when he went after the TV series "Murphy Brown" by saying its depiction of a single mother was irresponsible and set a bad example for America. The Republican vice president said the fictional character was "mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another `lifestyle choice.'"

The ensuing brouhaha helped Republicans sharpen a "family values" agenda that appealed to the Christian right and carried the party through a half-dozen congressional elections. Contrast that with the GOP reaction to news that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's unmarried 17-year-old daughter was five months pregnant.

"Show me a family that hasn't had some problems. Bottom line is, everybody has issues in their families," Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl said Tuesday. "Life happens," said McCain spokesman Steve Schmidt. Others echoed the sentiments, with former McCain rival Mitt Romney saying that "kids don't always do everything we'd like them to do."

Perhaps the most extraordinary comment came from John McCain's closest adviser and confidante, Mark Salter. Asked his reaction to the Palin situation, he said, simply, "An American family."

Which, of course, could mean just about anything. And when it comes to the Republican Party, that's precisely the point.

It was all about politics, of course. But behind it, the Republican reaction to Bristol Palin's pregnancy hints at how much the world has changed in 16 years. That the vagaries of a candidate's family life — even salacious ones — are treated by the GOP spin machine as just another domestic bump may be politically predictable, but it's also a notable cultural moment.

Somewhere along the way, apparently, appearing nonjudgmental became a Republican Party talking point.

"You have to be inclusive. These are realities. It's a reality check of what human life is all about," said Dorothy Olmos, 49, of Houston, a Republican candidate for Texas' statehouse who gave birth to her first child after becoming pregnant at 16.

The Palin family situation, which transformed a teenager's deeply personal conundrum into a high-stakes political drama, highlights two fundamental tensions that are often at odds in American politics — particularly the Republican kind.

On one side is the desire for candidates with life experiences that can inform their governing, and on the other the hunger for an unsullied clean slate to wipe away the well-smudged blackboards of the past.

The human being, though, is never a tabula rasa. The parties say they want authentic, but there's one niggling problem: Real things happen to real people. That's something that the GOP, with its McCain-fueled message of pragmatism over doctrine, apparently sees as an opening this week.

"All of society has changed somewhat," said Tony Culver, 60, a delegate from Angola, Ind., sitting on the convention floor Tuesday. "Everybody knows a family or friend that has had some problems in their life. People are a little more tolerant nowadays."

Perhaps — particularly with the latest generation of Americans. But in offering a moderate, tolerant, empathetic response, Republican leaders are straddling a fine line between playing to their base and conveying a progressiveness they hope will entice centrists into the McCain camp.

As usual, the GOP read of the culture is highly calibrated.

Tom Brogan, a political scientist at Albright College in Reading, Pa., sees some subtle maneuvering afoot. He says Republicans, in general, still adhere to the biblical notion of "condemn the sin, not the sinner." And even though party faithful have not criticized Bristol Palin for her actions, Brogan believes that's because "it's a juvenile so we're not going to talk about it."

"There is a way that the politicians can play this to their constituency and get away with it," Brogan says.

"You can finesse it politically by ... saying, `Well, this is a family and this happens, and we can't condemn the family,'" he says. "But they're not going to come out and say, `Well, premarital sex is approved.'"

In America, of course, debates about sex often mask debates about abortion. Kris Miccio, who teaches family law at the University of Denver, wonders how a party that opposes abortion rights can invoke a leave-this-family-alone mantra on a reproductive issue.

"The Republicans are saying this is a private family decision, but they don't accord the same privacy if a woman does not choose to carry a fetus to term," Miccio says. "If it's a private decision for the Palin family, it's a private decision for any family."

Murphy Brown, as we know, didn't really exist. And though Quayle took some flak from all sides after his statements, he benefited from taking potshots at a target that couldn't fight back. Bristol Palin, though, is a real person who happened to be thrown into the vortex of something she never could have predicted.

And on Wednesday night, she and her husband-to-be, Levi Johnston, will appear before Republican delegates in a spotlight beyond their dreams and, probably, their nightmares. Odds are they will be applauded loudly and warmly by an arena full of people who — officially, at least — oppose the very situation they're in.

These are realities. Everybody has issues. Life, indeed, happens.

AMEN!

Republicans are only tolerant when something directly affects their lives (like getting votes, or having a teen daughter pregnant and unwed), then suddenly all is justifiable...otherwise they just label you a "lazy, irresponsible liberal".

If I told you that my family and I are
a family that are proud to be an American,
Love God, Family, and support the troops
are pro-life, Christian, go to church,
belong to the NRA and I hunt.

You would label me a ....Repub, Dem??
(would make a good Intrade contract :)

    Careful......you might just be wrong.

Everything I said above IS what family values we have, and my
parents and grandparents before us!! Proud of that.

I am PROUD to say I am third generation..........INDEPENDENT!!!!

Let me tell you why we are neither Dem or Pub,
because we don't need a party to practice what we preach as opposed to the pubs who do NOT
practice what they preach, to me that is being a big fat phony and a hypocrite

Which is all the more evident by choosing Mccain/Palin for their ticket.
As was evident by Thompsons VICIOUS speech last night and the fact
the President of ALL Americans chose to be in the Americans house
the WH to blast other Americans, Dems.

What has this country come to?

How can you vote for fringe fanatics who say that if you are not
of their party than you are not American/Chrisitian ??

Come on guys, dont take us for fools we know politics is a sport
but give us more credit than that, just because Obama is pro-CHOICE
does that make him a bad person, and Mccain a good person?
NO it makes both of them AMERICANS with different views period!!

If we vote for a Dem does that mean our daughters must get an abortion if they choose NOT TO??
    absolutely NOT!
BUT it means Americans have the FREEDOM to chose according to their beleifs and values!

Lead by example, did the pubs lead by example during their speeches?
Absolutely NOT they tell their followers how and what to think and beleive.
    Where's the freedom in that?
Where's the Christian attitude when they tear their opponents to shreds
and are as vicious as Thompson was last night, LEAD by EXAMPLE
    not vicious words!!

No where on the Dem platform did I see them say you must not be a Chrisitian
I have the freedom to be a Chrisitian whether I vote pub or dem!!
I am an AMERICAN and have freedoom until recently
when the pubs initiated the patriot act and attempted to take
away some of my freedoms especially noted when I try to Fly anywhere
by plane, its embarrasing, all FEAR TACTICS they use to keep you in line.!!

Again they insult our intelligence we are well aware there are dangers in the world
but a pub in the office does not mean we are safer!!

Come on folks if you are an American who believes in God, Country and the American way
do not fall into the trap of beleiving that the republicans are all that and than some
they just talk that way but their example particularly picking this fanatic for VP proves they
are not walking the talk, they are a NEW BREED of the pub party they are the PROGRESSIVE repub party! McCain/Palin NEW PROGRESSIVE republican party or excuse me the "REFORMER maverick"
ahhh no progressive repub party who embrace all who LOVE WAR and tanking the dollar,
    and against the average American.

The republicans have proved what they can do to this country in 8 years and if you loved what they did not what they said they would do than you should vote repub, if you are a progressive repub who loves wars whether warranted or not than vote repub, BUT dont vote repub if you are a Christian American who loves God and Country, you have the freedom to vote dem or pub!

There is a reason why scandals are important. Not only does it go to judgment, but it goes to the possibility of that person being manipulated for the gain of another interest. Say it isn't the soon-to-be grandchild, but the rumor that Trig is not actually Palin's. Someone gets a hold of proof of that and Palin decides she'll deal with that person herself. All that person wants is a government contract. So she gives it to that person. Then all they want is something bigger, and bigger, and when does it stop? This is why people go through the vetting process.

You cannot tell me that this was a thorough check because they looked her up on google. If you're being vetted, the media would get wind of it. Why? Because people notice when their neighors are being interrogated about the governor they knew as a child. College roommates get called up about what sort of party girl young Sarah was.

Frankly, I don't think it happened.

Neither Republicans or Conservatives need "finessing". Sarah Palin embodies conservative values, family, America, hard work, individual achievement, honesty and personal responsibility. It would be hard to imagine a more natural pick than Palin.

Funny that Democrats are so "concerned" about what Palin is all about, where she came from, and "hidden agendas". They have no such concerns over a guy who seems to have destroyed, obscured, and hidden evidence of most of his life from public view, EXCEPT for those self-serving I Have Awakened books he wrote.

Has Obama taken Rush up on the suggestion that sending his long "lost" bro $20, thereby doubling his annual income? I'm surprised no enterprising soul hasn't started a George Hussein Onyango Obama Sustainability Fund yet. I'm sure that would be Change Onyango could believe in.

I am not looking for family valve in the President or the Vice, what I am looking for is a person who can and will do a job to help our country. The problem is no matter who you get to be President or Vice President can not change the way our government runs without replacing everyone in the congress and senate for they are the one who has the final say.

I do not like anyone who is running for office, out kissing babies or bring their hold family into the race that is just for show and mean nothing at all. I think people want to see a person who they believe is a religious and that is wrong many people say they are but are not. I can care less how McCain or Obama family is they are not the ones who will be running this country, so what good do they do having them appear in this election.

If that what make you vote for someone than you are wasting your vote period, when it come down to who ever get elected they will not have their family in on making decision. It will be the people they put in position who will be helping them run this country. That why McCain and Obama should be telling you who they are putting on their staff and how they stand on the, war, illegal, welfare, off shoring, banking selling of American companies, social security and taxes.

All this family stuff is just for show and nothing more, people are judging his running mate now just because of his daughter which is wrong. But you have some religious nut who feel everyone should be just like them, well some of us can think for ourselves without some church telling us what is right or wrong.

I do not belong to either party and what I hate no matter who is elected they will fight the other party all the way. They have forgotten once you are elected you belong to no party, your job is to work for the American citizens only, not corporation, religious group, group to protect illegal or any other group.

Our country is going down and before you cast your vote this year think how can you stop our country from going under. The convention are just for show and they tell you what they think is best for us not what we want to happen, so they are just controlling you and your life.
