WEST ST PAUL — Republican John McCain said Wednesday that Sarah Palin is a solid running mate because she's "in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply" as Alaska's governor, has served as a mayor and the voters in her state have evaluated her and approved of her at the ballot box.
Striking a populist chord, he also asserted her distance from Washington is a benefit.
"This is what Americans want," McCain said. "They don't want somebody who has, who is, frankly, necessarily gone to Harvard or an Ivy League school. She probably hasn't been to a Georgetown cocktail party. But you know what, she represents everything we want to see in government and America — change and reform and ethics and taking on the special interests."
While defending Palin, McCain said Democratic nominee Barack Obama's accomplishments "are very meager."
McCain also told ABC News, in an interview setting up his speech Thursday to accept the GOP's presidential nomination, that his running mate is capable in foreign policy matters in part because of geography.
"Alaska is right next to Russia," McCain said. "She understands that. Look, Senator Obama's never visited south of our border. I mean, please."
The comments were an effort to help define Palin in advance of her first prime-time exposure to the country — her speech later Wednesday before the Republican National Convention. They also continued McCain's effort to redefine Obama after Democrats spent their convention last week projecting positive images of their party leader.
In previewing his speech, McCain said, "I think I've got to make a case that I'm ready, that I put my country first and it's time to put aside partisan rancor and differences and work together for the country."
Nonetheless, the Arizona senator leveled a series of highly partisan charges against Obama while casting Palin in a most positive light.
"This is a very dynamic person," McCain said of Palin. "She's been the governor of our largest state, in charge of 20 percent of America's energy supply. She's been a mayor."
He also cited her supervision of 24,000 state employees, about two-thirds the number of police officers in New York City, before adding, "Over time, people will compare her accomplishments with that of Senator Obama, and his are very meager."
McCain offered Palin the vice presidency on Aug. 28 during their second face-to-face meeting. In the days after the announcement, Palin revealed her 17-year-old unmarried daughter was pregnant, and documents released in Alaska showed she had retained a private attorney to represent her in an abuse-of-power case.
Nonetheless, the senator said his running mate's background had been adequately checked out — and not just by his aides.
"The people of Alaska have vetted her," said McCain. "That's why she's got an 80 percent approval rating."
If John McCain would pass away on Friday--due to a heart attack, cancer, old age, etc.--after accepting the Republican nomination, Would the GOP back Sarah Palin as their nominee? Given her current "credentials" as a MAYOR and GOVERNOR?
I suspect that would be a big FAT "NO"
I wonder where the Hillary male voters go do they go to Mccain/Palin
I wonder where the Hillary male voters go do they go to Mccain/Palin
The voters that are shifting over to McCain from Hillary now that Palin in on the ticket are not doing it because he/she is a better choice or because of the issues...
they are doing it because they want to vote for a woman... which is exactly the stupidity the republican party is hoping Americans go for.
The Republican presidential nominee also told ABC News, in an interview Wednesday, that his running mate is capable in foreign policy matters in part because "Alaska is right next to Russia."
After all, Bush governing the border state of TX gave him plenty of foreign policy experience to completely screw over our relations with every single country on this planet.
And the fact that her husband was part of the AIP does not send up a red flag? mind boggling!
also he is implicated in trooper gate . im curious when does the husband of the governor try to get a state employee fired
And the fact that her husband was part of the AIP does not send up a red flag? mind boggling!
It is only mind boggling if the party's name starts with a "D" instead of an "R."
Everything thrown at the republicans has slid off, as if they were coated in Teflon. I thought you knew that already!
I apologize for my naivete! How simple of me.
AIP motto: Alaska First -- Alaska Always
GOP motto: Country first [sic]
bush was a governor of a big state and cheney was the businessman with oil and energy expertise and 8 years later where did it get us
Flushed down the toilet and into the sewer...
20% of America's oil supply huh? And All of America's oil supply is put in the same batch as the entire world's oil supply to which we add... 3%? Yes, she must be our next vice-president, in fact once we take into account that executive experience of less than two years as governor not to mention she was on the PTA, well, C'mon, her and McCain should switch.
You forgot about her beauty queen crown...
Palin's energy experience: Oil companies ravage the state's natural beauty and the residents get $ each year... yeah... that's a good policy... let's destroy the Earth.
Does she know anything outside of Oil? Probably not... which means she'll be nothing more than a female Cheney.
"Alaska is right next to Russia,"
I'm going cross-eyed trying to keep up with all these ridiculous talking points the GOP is spewing. Although, I'm betting Tucker Bounds wishes he'd thought of that line yesterday when he was getting his butt kicked by Campbell Brown.
Um... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzhFDQIgGSg he says here Mayors and Govs don't have the necessary experience.
