Fact Check: The fuller story in St. Paul

advertisement

WEST ST PAUL — John McCain set a new tone for the Republican National Convention Thursday, with speakers abandoning many of the tough words aimed at Barack Obama that had characterized the previous night. But the picture they painted blurred some facts.

_____

Some examples:

MCCAIN: "We lost their trust when instead of freeing ourselves from a dangerous dependence on foreign oil, both parties and Senator Obama passed another corporate welfare bill for oil companies. We lost their trust, when we valued our power over our principles."

THE FACTS: Yes, Obama voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry. But Obama has said he supported the legislation because it provided money for renewable energy. Obama did vote for an effort to strip the legislation of the oil and gas industry tax breaks. When that failed, he voted for the overall measure.

MCCAIN: "When a public school fails to meet its obligations to students, parents deserve a choice in the education of their children. And I intend to give it to them. Some may choose a better public school. Some may choose a private one. Many will choose a charter school. But they will have that choice and their children will have that opportunity."

THE FACTS: Despite his goal of giving parents choice in the schools their children attend, he is not proposing a federal voucher program that would provide public money for private school tuition. McCain is proposing only to expand the District of Columbia's voucher program. During his 2000 run for the presidency, he did propose a more than $5 billion school voucher plan, but he is not proposing one now. His advisers say President Bush's No Child Left Behind Law is aimed at giving parents more choice, and he would make improvements to that.

JOHN MCCAIN: "Again and again, I've worked with members of both parties to fix problems that need to be fixed. That's how I will govern as president. I will reach out my hand to anyone to help me get this country moving again. I have that record and the scars to prove it. Senator Obama does not."

THE FACTS: It is certainly true that McCain, with two decades in the Senate, has worked in a bipartisan fashion on a number of issues. Legislation that bears his name often carries the name of a Democrat as well. On campaign finance he worked with Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis.; on immigration with Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.; on climate change with Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn. Obama, elected in 2004, has a much slimmer record of accomplishment. He did work with Republican Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana to pass legislation to further curtail illegal shipments of weapons of mass destruction and to help destroy conventional weapons stockpiles. Unlike McCain, however, Obama did not put himself at odds with his own party leaders by working with Lugar.

SEN. LINDSAY GRAHAM: "Those who predicted failure, voted to cut off funding for our troops, and played politics with our national security will be footnotes in history. There's no doubt about it, we are on the road to victory. ...While Barack Obama expresses appreciation for our troops' service, he refuses to acknowledge their success."

THE FACTS: Obama voted in April of last year for legislation that financed the military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan but included a nonbinding call to pull troops out of Iraq. President Bush vetoed it. Then in May he voted against a subsequent financing bill because the pull-out provision had been removed. The bill, however, passed overwhelmingly. Before his May vote, Obama had voted for every bill that financed the troops since he joined the Senate. On Thursday, campaigning in Lancaster, Pa., Obama conceded that the troop surge had succeeded in reducing violence "beyond our wildest dreams." But, he said the United States government still needs to decide when to "turn over responsibility to the Iraqis for their own country?"

U.S. REP. MARSHA BLACKBURN: (Referring to vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin) "We met a woman who, with the bravery that only the mother of five can summon, said 'thanks but no thanks' to the good ole' boy earmarks."

THE FACTS: Palin has cut back on pork-barrel project requests, but in her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. She did reject plans to build the notorious "Bridge to Nowhere" but only after Congress had cut off funding for it. The bridge was a $398 million bridge from Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport. Palin did leave in place a $27 million federally funded project to build the approach road to the bridge. Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, a Democrat, said Thursday that Palin first told Ketchikan officials during a campaign stop in 2006 that she supported it. When she became governor, and after the project became the subject of national ridicule, she pulled the state's portion of funding.

I'm thinking the swing-shift journalists over at AP are getting a drunk on right now. Upper management is home in bed, and the second stringers got together to "prove' to the old farts that they have what it takes to make it in pop-media. I can't remember such a flurry of anti-Republican, anti-conservative and now anti-woman/Palin pieces in such a short time span.

And I can't remember a vice-presidential candidate chosen so impulsively that the press has had to do the primary vetting. On this point alone, Palin is a worse choice than Eagleton was in 1972. The GOP has only McCain to blame for this mess.

    bluecollar,

Right on time to spout the current GOP talking points. Heck of a job you're doing.

I know this is shocking , but people are waking up from the haze they have been in for the last 7 years. Before this election, when you criticised the GOP, you were accused of being unamerican, unpatriotic, and against the troops. Oh, and let's not forget my favorite accusation, "Why do you hate America?". These accusations stifled voices of dissent.

But enough is enough. People are willing to call bulls@*t at this point. Politics is a rough game as my republican friends are fond of saying. Put your adult undies on and stop the whining.

I feel bad now that I was just complaining that the media is not giving us the facts. Thank you for providing factual data to us. Now if we can just get others to see that discovering and stating facts is not an attack on women we could get somewhere. The public needs the facts. The American public has a lot to gain or loose in this election.

There are "facts" on both sides of the story. But where was a similar article following Obama's DNC speech? This article is so obviously biased Mr. Kuhnhenn should be embarassed.

Where are/were the articles highlighting Obama's shady connections with Ayers, Rezko, Wright, etc? C'mon now, what's fair is fair and the media has not been fair. When Gore ran in 2004 and his son was arrested for drunk driving, THERE WASN'T MENTION OF IT. But Palin has a daughter who is pregnant at 17 and the pack of wolves come down on her. SHAME!

Do all you socialist/liberal loving folks realize that you will be voting for a soft form of Communism? Yes, you brainwashed Lemmings, Socialism/Communism in America. It has arrived. As Carl Marx said, "From each according to his ability…to each according to his need." That's redistribution of wealth people and that's what Obama believes in. Better be ready to hand over your money, your control, your choices, decisions...your freedom to Big Government. Boy, I can't wait to see how they'll hack up our health care system, I mean look at the wonderful job they've already done with the education system. Good luck folks, be careful what you wish for!

"Soft Communism" ?? Huh? For the last (almost) 8 years the Republicans have 1) Undermined the constitutional balance of power 2) Decimated the 4th amendment 3) Suspended Habeas Corpus 4)Indebted Americans to a foreign power (China) for GENERATIONS 5)Diverted tax dollars collected from working class/middle class citizens to well connected and well funded corporations who are "friendly" to the administration 6) Lied to Congress AND the American people about the analysis of intelligence data regarding the imminence of the threat of WMD development by Saddam Hussien and 7) Used the lies they told as a basis for a hastily-developed and poorly executed invasion of a sovereign country that did not attack us and 8) Failed to bring the perpetrators of the 9/11 attack to justice. 9) They have tortured prisoners taken in that conflict In the distracted interval allowed their corporate owners to 10) manipulate the fossil fuel futures market (they "ENRONed" us) 11) Used the fossil market manipulation as an excuse to use taxpayer dollars to redirect food/feed grains into fuels generation for some exceptionally well-connected corporations and politicians. 12) Used EVERY office of the Executive branch to do political work, such as the Justice Department investigation of Democrats prior to elections 13) Firing experienced and capable lawyers to hire inexperienced lawyers from what is in essence, a "mail order" university because of their political views. THIS LIST GOES ON AND ON. These are not the mistakes of mismanagement, they are intentional and directed toward undermining the Constitution and developing a permanent, one-party government.

Now, this Palin is claiming that only "small town" people are REAL Americans, the Middle Class is somehow misguided and misinformed....So, lets set the "Small Town" (READ: Working Class) against the Middle Class and get them to fighting so they won't notice the difficulties in their lives, increases in commodity prices, loss of real wages, job security and erosion of opportunity. All this, so the REAL "Elites", the Corporatocricy and their wholly owned political operatives can maintain their hold on political power and keep feeding off of the taxpayers dollars.

If voting to bring fairness to the tax structure, behaving in accord with our established principles of human rights, civil rights and justice and bringing government resources to bear on large and complicated problems that put America at risk for exploitation by foreign powers (such as dependence on foreign oil and a huge national debt) then I guess I'm all for it. If you want to call it "Communism", you may. However, by doing so, you reveal that you do NOT have any sense of what "communism" is and what communists believe in. I WOULD submit that by your content and by using the arguments of the right that you are an advocate of FASCISM and support the trend of the Republican party toward establishing a FASCIST government in America.

I pity people like you. Selling your own future for a desperate sense of "belonging" to the Right. When it suits them, they'll throw you under the bus. Right now they need you, so be a good follower. Don't question.

[Fascism is a totalitarian nationalist political ideology and mass movement that is concerned with notions of cultural decline or decadence, and which seeks to achieve a millenarian national rebirth by exalting the nation or race, as well as promoting cults of unity, strength and purity.]

I am sorry but it seems to me that Palin is ignorant as those who stand and clap to the same rhetoric that has been playing on TV for weeks….
Her speech eluded that only republicans were serving and dying in the military!!!!! Who are they looking to represent??? Only those who think like they think…. Truth is… Government has grown, the deficit is out or control, job creation is in fast decline!!!! one just needs to look at where they are, are you better off today, is the country better? How about trade and global influence?????? What about care for the 25,000, (and growing) permanently disabled veterans, Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and whatever affiliation they choose to join, who will need our support and help for the rest of their lives…. Do they calculate this in the cost of war???? What about the ten's of thousands of lives and the billions upon billions of dollars spent in just the Iraq war. I pray that Palin or any other mother, father, grandparent, sister, brother, son, daughter … ever have to suffer the loss of life or limb of a loved one.. Bush declared we won the war, what is Palin and McCain talking about we will leave winners?

Palin is ignornant? I noticed in your little tirade that you didn't see fit to mention anything she specifically said that revealed ignorance. And before you start calling her "ignorant" you should check your own listening skills. She did not allude (not elude) to an idea that only republicans are dying in the war. You seem to be stuck in the democrat line that McCain is a continuation of Bush. This is based in ignorance if anything is. McCain hasn't voted for a tax increase in 26 years! That hardly makes him culpable (like your guy Biden is) for the growth of Government. Obama is the one promising MASSIVE government growth, so again your comment is incorrect, if not ignorant. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Yes, the deficit is out of control and WHO is in control of Congress? Hmmm? Democrats. Yes, Bush let them spend too much. But McCain is not Bush and anyone who says he's a continuation is either lying or woefully ignorant. And stop with the lying about Bush declaring we won the war. He NEVER said that. You are simply parroting the tired old lie that he meant that when he said "mission accomplished". The mission to unseat the world worst terrorist supporting regime and prevent it's aspirations for deadly weapons WAS accomplished. So dump the talking points inspired by a deeper ignorance than you accuse Palin of and level some REAL criticisms at them if you have them. I have some, but obviously Obama has MUCH more to criticize and question from his close ties with terrorists, serious felons, radical bigots and others that show his deep lack of judgement.

Further, department of commerce figures does

It's not she that is necessarily ignorant. It's her speech writers. No wait. Let me try that again. It's not that she's ignorant, it's that her speech writers are dishonest. There, I think I got it right.

Newsflash: Sources close to the Obama campaign are revealing that the Democratic nominee is furious over being upstaged by Sarah Palin's performance during her speech tonight in Minneapolis. The source of Obama's ire is not Gov. Palin, however. He is incensed with his own campaign advisors. Palin's performance tonight was exactly what Obama wanted for his campaign. An experienced running mate with strong feminine traits; who has the ability to be tough, without sounding catty; one who would be able to stand and deliver the tough message, while wearing heels. After his first choice refused the offer to join the ticket, the Obama camaign convinced the Democratic nominee to choose Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate. Attempts to reach Rep. Barney Frank on his rejection of Sen. Obama's initial VP nod have not been successful to date. We will keep trying to reach Rep. Frank in order to give you the complete story as it becomes available.

The republicans need more raw meat in their diet. Also with a family the size of Palin's the democrats need to be discussing birth control. You know what the problem with this planet is - there are just too many people. You want to resolve the food, water, oil, greenhouse gas, terrorist problem - stop having so many damn babies. I have a world population counter on my computer - I'll loan it to you and it will make your head spin. People seem to think we humans are something special and above the laws of nature - we aren't and we will become extinct just like every other animal (read dinosaurs) that have inhabited this planet. You think any supreme being is going to save our lowly butts you are living in Oz. We need to stop tearing each other apart and figure out a way to retain what's left of our planet - otherwise it is bon voyage baby!

A family the size of Palins? Whatever your views on the so-called Population Bomb, that's a pretty harsh, intolerant attack. Criticize her politics if you like, but these personal smears attacking her choice of family size, etc. is nauseating. Talk about tearing each other apart!!!

And you may want to check out Erhlich's predictions for what the population explosion was supposed to have happen. Like the Global Warming Chicken Littles, Paul Erhlich's predictions have all collapsed in a the history pile of armeggedon junk science.

We should start to eleviate the issue by not allowing so many more immigrants into this country. Some, yes, as always, but not in the streams we are allowing today and especially not the illegal ones. Projections have shown there will be serious, serious issues with food and water resources if this continues. We think we are helping the world by allowing record numbers to seek refuge here but it's like a grain of sand on a beach - a miniscule effect. In the meantime we are heading towards starving our kids. All these touchy feely social remedies need to be reality checked.

I don't get it, repubs say yellow is black and AP says hold on, yellow is not black, it is hmm yellow and you say they are biased, be a big boy (or girl) and please tell me what was said there (the article) that wasn't true...

You amaze me, since when did telling truth with backup become a biased opinion? Your logic is deeply flawed, humor me.

                      Fine, I'll take your challenge!
First, does the title indicate any bias? Is it a fact-by-fact analysis of her claims and which are right or wrong or is it attempting to pick out only those things that support a leftist attack? The authors clear bias is blatant from the title.

Second, sources. The author picks sources sympathetic to his position. The Tax Policy Institute is HARDLY non-ideological! Cmon, supported by the Brookings Institute and the Urban Institute? That's SURE unbiased. Anything from a competing data source? Oopps guess not.

Third, the accomplishments list includes working with other senators? Are you serious? That was his JOB! Her statement was absolutely factual and a strained screeching stretch to say he helped on some legislation does more to support HER point than the authors!

Fourth, regarding her interaction with oil companies in Alaska, she has a great deal to claim credit for in her DIRECT negotiations with the oil companies! Yes, you could slice Alaskas size by looking at geography, as McCain did or by population as the author did. Geography is not unimportant and presents serious leadership challenges due to transportation issues, weather issues, various native populations, dangerous north slope issues, being miles from Russia, etc. McCains point is rock solid however you decide you want to slice the data. McCains point was, is and should be that her experience in leadership is vastly greatly than Obama's and that to discount it, like Obama and the leftist media and this author have, is dishonest in the extreme. If you want to slice it by population, fine - but the point still stands unopposed and once again, the articles author is shown to be working from extreme bias.

The question of the national guard the author makes is just laughable. A logical response to his argument is "so what?" No one ever claimed anything different and to suggest that McCain did anything misleading regarding this is bizzare. He didn't claim she commanded Guard units in Iraq! She didn't claim they never became federally active. And to point out the size of the guard is another "so what?" 4000 or 40,000 - whatever the number, the point is that she has experience Obama doesn't.

The other thing to point out is that McCain is clearly working with an agenda. That is obvious and expected and proper - he's running for office! What is striking in this article is the author pretends to be a journalist reporting. He pretends to be objective. That's the biggest joke here. The author writes in tone, style and biased content and tries to pass it off as journalism. That's the difference and the blatant dishonesty of this article.

I wonder if this author strained so hard to examine Obama's strange comments that he has executive experience because he is running for President? Now THAT'S a statement worth some analysis. So, you can get the executive experience simply by running a successful campaign? Doubtful we heard from this author in anything near the condescension he wrote in this article.

And let's be honest. Even IF the author had published the truth or made salient points, the truth can be spun to work an agenda. AP Authors should be ashamed of doing that, unless they are hired to editorialize.

My point stands. The author set out to attack her and McCain because of his clear and obvious bias, used major stretches and spin to sell his opinion and pretended to be objective.

So they will pay those taxes out of their profit margin? Are you kidding me? They will raise their prices, making consumers 'pay' the tax. But I guess those economics are above Nobama's pay grade...

It was a successful strategy in the 90s... when the middle class has more money, they spend more money and those small/mid sized companies have more customers.

That's a guaranteed fact... its human nature proven over 1000s of years.

What doesn't work is trickle down theory. Giving money to the top just makes the top fat and happy, they simply want more, the more you give them. Just look at CEO salaries over the past 8 years.

BTW, I'm a VP for one of those mid sized companies... execs are NOT sitting around wishing they made more money so they could trickle down their new found riches onto the hard working middle class.

To gigantor - you need to pay attention. You defend the proliferation of the species but the truth of the matter is that the planet is limited - resource wise. Humans need to recognize that they create most of the problems in the world. Over-consumption creates shortages and many suffer. We in America live in a bubble primarily shielded from the horror of poverty. If, for example, you were to live in a country like Bangladesh, you might realize how effective birth control can be to help alleviate hunger, disease, and misery. Yes, family size does matter - the more you reproduce the more your offspring consume. In case you haven't noticed the good old USA is currently experiencing an energy shortage. Why, because the populace has chosen to suck the country dry of fossil fuels and relay on a much more unstable source - the Middle East. And who drives these cars and demands that industry cater to our needs - people. So next time you pay $100 to fill up your gas tank - think of supply and demand and all the people that you have to compete with. Wear your condom.

Of course the planet is limited. The solar system is limited. The universe is limited. The question is whether we are nearing our limits. The Population Bomb people have been saying for 30 years we are just a few years from a dead planet. Just like Al Gore and Global Warming. And all their dire Chicken Little predictions end up laughably wrong.

You also miss a serious point. Sure, the more people, the more they consume. But that's only half the equation. People also PRODUCE. In the US, we produce more than we consume. Thus, to base a policy on only half the equation is foolish.

I understand about poverty. I've been to the Balkans and seen it first hand. I've been to the outlying areas of Russia and seen the failure of their central planning in the aftermath of the collapse of communism.

Sure, birth control is fine as a personal choice. I have no problem with it. But the doom and gloomers about population on the planet have consistently been wrong. The problem that cause poverty and these other resource issues is less the resources of the planet but predominantly the productivity of the people and what the system (philosophical, governmental, etc.) encourages or discourages them to do. The Soviet empire failed because socialism is a failure when it comes to motivating people to achieve. The US has the highest per person productivity on the planet because of our system of freedom, liberty and captialism. Take that to Bangladesh and their poverty problems will abate significantly. It always happens in time. Russia today, flawed as they are, are booming. Not because of their oil by itself but because of capitalism. China has realized it.

Over population is not the problem. Bad philosophy is. And keep in mind that having less than replacement birth rate will kill a country and cause more poverty than any population boom every could. This is one of the problems Europe has - fewer people to do the work of running the country as people die. Under-producing population is a serious crisis.

My challenge to you is to get an old copy of The Population Bomb or other of the apocolyptic population literature of the 70s. See what the predictions for the 80s, 90s and now were. Study the facts a bit more and you'll see the truth of it.

We produce more than we consume? Of what, besides hot air and bull$hit? Are we producing more clean air and water, more raw materials to fuel our lifestyles? You agree that the earth is limited but at the same time dismiss the inevitable result of exceeding that limit: We can't go on like this indefinitely; we can either plan for the inevitable or let it kick us in the ass.

Okay gigantor, you mention China as realizing that consumption is the way to glory. The bottom line is that the entry of both China and India as consumer nations has resulted in dire predictions for the survival of our fossil fuel based society. There is no way that the oil and natural gas is going to be able to supply everyone's energy needs into the next century - especially, if the population of the World doubles and they all want to drive SUVs to work. I am aware of the population predictions you cite, however, I am also aware of the economics of supply and demand. Supply (fossil fuel) and demand (people) will drive us all to be at each others throats - unless technology bails us out and we're a long way from solar vehicles. But back to China. The Chinese government has implemented a one child per family policy that is harshly enforced. Why, because they recognize that the available resources cannot sustain its populace. So apparently, someone is concerned about how many people are on the planet. I strongly believe that population control should be in the formula for how to deal with any shortage. The problem I have with Ms Palin is that she thinks that having children - especially American children is somehow condoned by a supreme being.

Well now you start to mix up several things.
You mention the "dire predictions"....that's about as useful as predicting the winner of the lottery. I'm not interested in dire predictions. I'm interested in historical trends and facts. The historical record of the negative-growth-population crowd that you seem to be endorsing is awful. They are wrong almost all the time. So why should I pay attention to further dire predictions when their past is a wasteland of failed predictions and ideas?
Second, you admire the Chinese one-child policy? Sorry, I'm not real excited about using a totalitarian regime's social policy as a model for ours. I simply point out that China has used capitalism to grow their economy and that it has worked. Not so with their one-child policy. It has produced more social disfunction and disorder than anything since Maos purges. Third, why should you be concerned about her faith? Are you prejudiced against people of faith? I hope that's not what you're saying because that smacks of bigotry.

It is pleasing to know that, whatever the outcome of the election, the body public knows of the facade that is Obama. He's not fooling anyone. You have to admit, he certainly tries.

I can't wait to see Palin eviscerate Obama in future news. It's sad that it's too late for Obama to actually do some work before running for President. I guess he was counting on the super-nice cover letter on his resume.

                                                  3) An increase of $2,200 annually for every middle class taxpayer. Let see there are how many millions of middle class taxpayers. Gee why don't you look it up and do the math.

That's an increase of $2200 in annual after-tax income per middle-class family, or about two-thirds more than McCain's plan offers. I can do the math; I can also read the article.

Palin gave plenty of reason for Americans to think she is out of touch with reality. Her lies about herself and Obama were applauded by the GOP, letting America confirm its negative view of the GOP. We can be sure that Palin will continue to paint a rosy picture over the horrific damage done to all of us by Bush-McCain fantasies and hypocrisy.

If nobody believes that Obama was not part of the Chicago machine they have no idea how politics works here. Obama hides behind/ uses the excuse of" that was not the person i new... He used that with the Rev. and Rezko? I do believe in Change it is good.. only if it is change in the right direction.. it can not be if it is a candidate/party who continually purposes to support abortion rights. Yes, you can argue, that a person should be able to choose, but morally it is still wrong and that is where the left does not go, because they will lose the argument.
The democrats have always and will continue to use fear to keep people in there place. they want to help people but never to get them out of poverty, hand outs are good but do not give them to much they may actually not need the govt anymore if the become self sufficient. That sounds so much like socialism does it not...Remember this.. true freedom is not being able to do what you want, it is doing what you ought to be doing, thats when you are truly free. I believe the Dems have a good heart, but they are so miss guided as to the true definition of freedom, choice and thereby may never have an understanding of reality, philishopically and theologically.

I find it interesting the press fails to dissect BHO's speeches in this same manner. Just listening to his speech last week, he made dozens of outright lies and/or deliberate inacuracies. Where was the reporting on those? You MSM are not doing your job.

I think she is going to be a fantastic VP.
Stretching the truth seems to be the norm for both politicians and the media.
I guess we are just left to decide who can come up with the biggest whoppers.
The off the wall tactics of the liberal media the past few days has at least for me made them all but irrelevant.
The statements and questions directed towards her children were way off base and like Mr's. Obama said, just down right mean.

Here's a story for the press. How about questioning a candidate's claim to change a corrupt process that he himself is an integral part of?

Right on, JCB. Excellent point. While they're at it, maybe the media could also examine how a cokehead like Obama is going to have his head straight on enough to solve our problems. He doesn't have any experience, after all, so his brain better not be too fried from drug use because he'll have to rely on something.

Facts are inconvenient things to republicans. Oh, and Tina, you should ask your candidate about his well documented drug use. Oops, facts are inconvenient things to republicans so I guess maybe you shouldn't. You should actually learn a few things about that in which you speak prior to speaking, it helps.

Prove it. What's your source? I am referring to Obama's confessions in his memoirs. If McCain was a past abuser, you can bet it'd be all over the news. (The news won't cover in the case of their darling Obama, though, of course - what a surprise.) Let's see your facts... Or is that too "inconvenient" for you??
