DURYEA — Democrat Barack Obama called Republican rival John McCain's acceptance speech the final piece of an out-of-touch convention that focused on its nominee's biography instead of the struggles of the middle class.
"If you watched the Republican National Convention over the last three days, you wouldn't know that we have the highest unemployment in five years because they didn't say a thing about what is going on with the middle class," Obama told workers at a specialty glass factory.
"They spent a lot of time talking about John McCain's biography, which we all honor," the Illinois senator said. "They talked about me a lot, in less than respectful terms. What they didn't talk about is you and what you're seeing in your lives and what you're going through, or what your friends or your neighbors are going through."
Obama pointed out that the nation's unemployment rate zoomed to a five-year high of 6.1 percent in August, according to a government jobs report issued Friday.
"We've now lost 605,000 jobs since the beginning of this year," Obama said. "We've had eight consecutive months of job losses."
Obama seized on the new jobs report as part of his strategy to tie McCain to President Bush's stewardship of the economy and to connect with voters who fear their jobs will disappear. There is no shortage of such voters in Rust Belt Pennsylvania.
In accepting the Republican presidential nomination, McCain spoke at length about his biography, his love of country and his principles for governing.
Obama mocked McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis for saying the election would be decided more by voters' views about the candidates than about issues.
"Personalities? I mean, I've got a pretty good personality. But that's not why I'm running for president," Obama said to laughter.
In two days of campaigning in Pennsylvania, Obama has been reaching out to middle-class and working class voters who preferred Hillary Rodham Clinton to him during the Pennsylvania primary.
"I have to say to you: I'm not perfect, but the one thing people can't deny is that for my entire public life, I've been fighting for folks like you, ordinary, middle-class families and working families, helping them getting ahead," Obama said, borrowing a theme that helped Clinton win in these rural, largely white areas.
Obama later greeted workers and patrons at The Avenue Diner in Wyoming, Pa. Asked by reporters his reaction to McCain's acceptance speech, Obama replied, "Still haven't heard, after three days, what they're going to do for the economy."
John Mccain is running his campaign based on him being a POW and serving in the Military he nor Governor Palin will talk about the Economy, College affordabilty or people stuggling to make ends meets because they are out of touch with the american people. The Republicans tactics will not work this year because the American people are struggling.
O's claim to lower taxes on 95% is a lie . Look at all his tax plan and all of the proposed increases across the full range of income levels. Everyone will pay more. O's plan to tax business will also hurt jobs. Remember Jimmy tried this stuff and the economy fell like a rock. Dims only here or read want they want to believe . Look at the facts O's associates are Marxist socialist leaning liberals , Big Gov't and nanny state types with income redistribution. We need the Gov't out of our lives and self reliance back in.
Look at all his tax plan and all of the proposed increases across the full range of income levels.
Doug, you're simply lying. Every independent tax authority that has looked at both candidate's plans agree that you're wrong and that for almost everybody except the top 2%, the Obama plan gives more relief.
I agree. Every person except the top 2% will get tax relief under Barack's plan and to say otherwise means a person either doesn't understand the plan or is lying to favor McCain. To say Barack will raise taxes across the board is simply not true.
Sorry Doug that's not true... tell another lie since that's all you Republicans have left.
If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to roll back, then taxes will go up for everyone. Though some like to ignore this fact, all tax bracket levels were lowered.
Tim- If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire they will likely be replaced with a different set of tax cuts. Apparently both candidates would offer a plan that is different than the Bush tax cuts. Washington Post has a summary chart .
Would you talk about the economy if you were John McCain. POW POW POW and be scared of the Democrats is all they have.
I have to agree with some of these comments. I am 58 years old and have been in politics for a number of years and I too have never seen our country in such a condition. When you look at the whole picture of what we call the USA now...it's not good. Very high gas prices, a war which seems to have no end, unemployment that is the highest in five years, inflation creeping into EVERYTHING we buy. Wages that are stagnant, healthcare costs that continue to reach epic proportions.
Everday I hear these same things. It's appalling when people have to try to decide between buying medication or putting gas in their vehicle to go to work. Face it...we are in the pits.
But from what I heard at the RNC...they DON'T know...or DON'T care, because all I heard was attacks from them.
One of the worst things I heard may have been on the second night...not sure..but there was some lady speaking..and she was talking about how if John and Sarah were elected, they were going to make sure that you would keep more of your own money...and then you could decide what charity if any you could contribute to...sheesh. Sounds like trickle down economics, which did not work before and it sure would not work now.
I am a Democrat and proud to say I will be voting for Barack Obama and Joe Biden in November. At least they have given the everyday person some glimmer of hope that things CAN get better than they are
By the way, has the Great One spelled out exactly how he will get these middle class working families ahead?
YES.... too bad you're too busy to actually pay attention since he gave great detail of exactly what he was going to do and exactly how he was going to pay for it.
Class warfare is running high in here. So you are saying that I man who earns 5 million a year has more money than he needs, then the same logic would apply when you see a lady that is 300lbs she should give up her food to feed the poor. What double standards. So if a person who earns 50,000 a year should give to the people who only make 20,000 a year. Where does it stop. OBama is a Marxist in every since of the word. Not one thing said on this website backs up that Obama is qualified to be President. I was a Scout leader for 8 years does that make me qualified to lead the free world?
You would probably do a better job than G. W. Bush and is grandfather J. McCain.
A Boy Scout troop leader probably has a better handle on economics than
Obama.
Where does it stop.
Excellent point Riverman218. The problem with economic egalitarianism is that its eventual outcome is a life of mere subsistence.
A woman who weighs 300 lbs. should not be eating so much.
I am all for universal healthcare, and if I had it my way it would exclude smokers and the obese.
That same woman probably has a 200 lb. obese child too.
God bless America...
So universal health care would eliminate more freedoms? By government force if needed? Where do I sign up?
You do as I say, I know what's best for your life libs crack me up!
The "qualified to lead" argument went out the window when George Bush was elected multiple times in this country. A man who can barely put a sentence together has been running this country into the ground for 8 years. You're mistaking class warfare with people being fed up about the economy and the state of this country. I have no problem with with people with incomes in the millions. I do have problem with the wealthy saying that the economy is strong while people struggle to keep their jobs, pay their mortgages, and pay for gas to fill their cars so they can go to work drawing their middle class salaries. McCain is out of touch with the needs of the average American so he's a bad choice for President.
I am all for universal healthcare, and if I had it my way it would exclude smokers and the obese.
Maybe its getting late and I'm just a bit punchy, but that made me laugh and laugh...
I am all for universal healthcare, and if I had it my way it would exclude smokers and the obese.
Would it really be universal then?
On the campaign trail with McCain/Palin
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Cedarburg, several women in the crowd said the draw for them was Ms. Palin, not necessarily Mr. McCain.
"She's me," said Tana Krueger, 58, a mother of six from Fond du Lac, Wis., who said she drove an hour to see Ms. Palin.
"I can just really relate to everything in her life, children with disabilities, teenage pregnancy," Ms. Krueger said.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a perfect example as to why we should all be worried.
Bottom line, for many, it is about biography! That's why the Republicans spent so much time on McCain's bio at their revival and ultimately why they picked Palin. That's also why they 'attack' others bios and never talk about the issues and try and make everyone in the other party look worse than they are.
They appeal to our egos and by osmosis implant a fantasy that if their candidate appears like them they will actually be voting for themselves! Yes... you too can be in charge of the most powerful nation on the planet and hobnob with other world leaders while eating bonbons and sipping champagne! Just vote for our candidate and POOF! you are the next president!
It worked for Bush, why not for McCain/Palin. It's basically the same people running their campaign.
Right you are, d-flux. We are a narcissistic and gullible nation. Here's the Republican party in a nutshell: a number of neocon elitists at the top manipulating a wide base of yokels and hayseeds below them. The top gets to rule the world and reduce their tax burden by exploiting the petty fears and prejudices of their base (the ones with the guns and the bibles...hey, what's another word for 'the base'?). Is it any wonder you can snag a voter in the same way you can sell a country music song? That's my life she's singing about!
The man McCain is from a long lineage of warriors. His ancestry was resolute with war. Hence the man was born into war. He runs his campaign as war is his touchstone to the people!
Born, raised and winding his life through in and about war. He tells his story...
It does not seem to matter to him that the Vietnam War in which he served, was an imperialistic nationalistic blunder to "stop communism from taking over the world!"
The pro war hype of that era would have the nation believe we were in grave danger- "fear" was once again the guiding light!
I was there as a young boy. I witnessed this abomination of our nation going into war- "stop the communists, they are taking over the world!" That was the word of the day. "The domino effect will..."
McCain, even to this day feels betrayed by the American peace movement as to why the Vietnam war was lost. This is familiar ground for the war culture that now has manifest itself in the Iraq War! A war that McCain said we needed and voted for! Yet another war that historically will go down as a political assignation of our constitution and our cultural beliefs! Another huge loss of national equity and our beloved youth all because of the political ego and the lack of political wisdom!
Wars are won or lost by the rightness of the participants Mr. McCain!
As our nations history goes we have never lost a war when we were right but now we have lost wars because we were ideologically wrong! It's not just about military strength- its about wisdom and justice!
McCains campaign video is sequenced within his life of war.
Service and gratitude of and for his country is based on his war experience.
His video biography then sequences into his career as an AZ. senator.
Twenty-six years of senatorial time are blurred into nothingness!
His voting record parallels the GOP- a 10% difference from the GOP is supposed to define his presidency, and his given name the "Maverick?"
His record cannot be hidden, his ideology is full of contradiction- flip flops!
President Bush said, "Im the War president, Im the War president!"
It most definitely seems there is another one named John McCain following in the wings!
I truly hope he is not the one!
McCain says hes different then Bush, not the same! Yet who was in the progarm directors chair off to the side of the stage at the convention as though he were directing the entire RNC proceeding?
Karl Rove! McCain is the same as Bush- divisive, self-righteous, a fist-swinger with no answers for change from the destitude that his party has created!
I would find your rhetoric more believable if I did not feel that the Republicans have consonantly tried to manipulate us at every turn. The gimmick of adding a woman to the ticket to make a play for the "Hilary" votes is insane. Are we expected to be unable to distinguish between the two on policy?
Then to try to keep her from the media so that she only presents canned speeches is insulting and deceptive.
If you want her to be in the arena with boys and throw punches she should be ready to take one.
Hillary ran for the top job not a bit player any of you men or women foolish enough to vote for Sarah Palin deserve to lose your homes ,health insurance , and your jobs. I trusted Hillary to do health care if she had won and I think all America knew health care was a done deal what can you say is a done deal with Sarah ? If you dont know I will tell you we all will be road kill
An Anti-Sara Palin Evolution Antidote to Mindless Evangelical Babbling
Dear Friends,
Evangelicals have been denying evolution with the greatest vigor especially since the turn of the 21st Century and the arrival of George Bush on the scene. Now, so tightly intertwined with the Republican Party as to be indistinguishable from them as evidenced by the hoopla and shouting and talking in tongues up in Minnesota, they are denying all truth to a degree that should be alarming to any thinking person. Join with us in considering a new ideology that is neither conservative nor liberal but is based on the straight scientific truth of evolution put together with mathematical precision and clarity. Now is the time when America must make its stand against these lunatic, double talking, control mad, war mongering fascists who want to enslave the country and conquer the world for God, up to and including waging nuclear war to satisfy His Divine will in their suicidally juvenile and unhappiness driven desire to all die and go to Heaven, and take us with them. Are you on the hit list to be activated the minute the election is over and McCain has won?

I agree. I'm a Christian, and nothing scares me more than Christian fundamentalists. You see people in 20,000 person stadiums preaching that God wants them to be rich. Scary, scary stuff.
Anyone see the movie Jesus Camp? There were kids praying to Bush like he was a prophet.
What is going on in this country?
Jesus Camp was one of the horrifying movies I every saw.
That mother thought she was teaching her son something that would help him in his adult life?
Obam, lets see, Tax, tax, tax, tax, tax, tax. Government control, control, control, control. More welfare, welfare, welfare, welfare. Universal healthcare otherwise known as give everyon Socialized medicine like Europe and Communist countries. Yea, McCain is attacking and Obama is running and hiding.
Have you ever been to any of these countries on W Europe? Lower crime, lower poverty, BETTER healthcare, better colleges.
Sounds like hell on Earth...
What do we have here? A nation absorbed in consumerism. Everybody itching to show their friends their bigger house, new Gucci bag, new SUV, etc. Keep my taxes low, I gotta get the new iPhone!
The arrogant teenage spawn of Europe, we always think we know it all.
Since when has Canada, the UK, France, Poland been communist countries???......oh yeah that's right they weren't they were our allies in WW2. Once again read a book.
McCain is attacking? His speech last night was lame and boring. Sarah Palin's speech energized Democrats to donate $10 million to the Democratic ticket. Everytime I see her open her mouth on t.v. I want to give more money to the Democratic ticket. (Please republican party keep her talking)
If you work for a living I hope your job is secure. If McCain is put in office in a few years you might wish you had welfare and universal healthcare.
Okay - so is someone saying that Obama knows anything about the economy? About foreign policies? Maybe that's why he had to take the "safe" pick with Joe Biden. I love Obama's resume up there. It looks really great on paper. He's "served" in some of those Senate committees, but he really never showed up. Again, he looks great on paper. I just wish he really knew what he was talking about! It's that simple.
McCain has supported the majority of G.W. Bush's failed policies of the past 8 years. Does that make him qualified? Lets face it, they both look good on paper. McCain and his advisors say the economy is strong while families are losing their homes, people are losing their jobs, and people are struggling to pay for healthcare and gas. That tells me McCain knows nothing about the economy or maybe he just doesn't care.
We still haven't heard what he'll do about anything. His answer to everything is either 'I'll fight for you in Washington' or one of his war stories. My answer to him is, 'youv'e had 26 years, I'm giving Obama a chance'. Since when is experience preferable to intelligence. I am soooo tired of being embarrased every time our President opens his mouth. I'm looking forward to an intelligent Presidency wirh Obama!
A Chicken in Every Pot! Are you still carrying on? Take a look at what happened to day (Lehman Bros. collapse, Merrill Lynch taken over by Bank of America, AIG on the verge of collapse. The markets are in trouble as major banking institutions start to fail. Why are they failing? Why are people losing their homes? Why did Enron kill hundreds of businesses and crippled many others in California during this Administration? Deregulation! I am not saying that regulation is the answer to all of our problems; however, I know the issues that I raised above would have been prevented.
When you speak negatively about social programs, I ask that you decline to take social security when you become eligible. Ask every resident on your block to fix their own street, or provide the lighting for them. Republicans get food stamps, they apply for federal programs (I know this because I over see one); they benefit from Medicare too. Ask your buddies to forfeit their benefits (even their unemployment benefits when the companies they work for send their jobs overseas).
To answer your question about jobs, companies are shipping jobs over seas because of cheap labor. Don't tell me they are shipping jobs overseas because Americans are too dumb to do them. We have been manufacturing cars for almost a hundred years....The bottle line, Chicken in Every Pot, greed is at the core of our economic woes. We need change that even you can believe in.
I ask that you decline to take social security
I would most gladly opt out if I were able to avoid paying the taxes into the system for all of my life. But that is precisely the point, isn't it? We don't have any choice in the matter.
That is now how protesting an "unjust" program works. You have to actually sacrifice else your just making noise.
else your just making noise
Speak for yourself. I'm a citizen taxpayer who objects to the way my tax dollars are being spent. I have every right to protest the current system. And if it never changes, I'll still have every right to receive whatever measly benefits the system will be able to pay out in 40 years.
The point is, some of us are talking about it now. We're trying to get people to listen up and pay attention to the fact that the current incarnation of Social Security is not the best way to go about taking care of people when they stop working. There are smarter, more viable models we could be employing. But because the issue is so politicized, nobody will listen.
Act or stop making noise. People pay attention to those who act. They ignore those who do not act.
Social Security would have been fine if the Republicans had not raided it for the last 30 years while it was making massive surpluses. It would have made it over the baby boomer hump and benefits for you and me would have been quite fine. But what happened was that SS was raided, it was given Bonds (not IOUs), and now the feds have to pay from the general budget to replace the funds that it took. Bad management does not make it a bad program.
Suck it up.
Your Social Security is paid to help a broken program some Democrat established years ago and other Democrats fed off of years later for other programs.
You better be building a nest egg outside of Social Security because your Democrat sold the bill long ago and will never provide you with the goods.
I am sorry but our Social Security is our penance we must pay for the generation ahead. The "Baby Boomers" made such a surplus the Dems could not help themselves. And now we are paying for it.
Do you have IRA accounts? I hope so, because with all the taxes I pay and the support I will have to give my parents I sure as heck do not want to carry your butt too!
@BMS
benefits for you and me would have been quite fine
Wrong. You obviously haven't done your homework. It is true that the T-bills will have to be paid back out of general funds, and this does add to our overall non-payroll tax burden, but that is just a double whammy to the taxpayer. The projected benefits outlay will be far greater than revenue somewhere near the middle of the century. And by revenue, I'm speaking of payroll taxes, as well as the principal and interest on the T-bills currently held in trust for Social Security. So even if the trust fund was held in plain old cash, it wouldn't change the facts of the matter.
Bad management does not make it a bad program
Quite right. But start with a bad program, add bad management on top of it and you get something really terrible: a financial black hole.
And just stop with the self-righteous blather, "Act or stop making noise". It doesn't even make any sense. Since I won't even be eligible for SS benefits for nearly 40 years, my ability to "act", and thereby get people to pay attention will be a little irrelevant by that point don't you think?
Calling it a bad program does not make it so. All of its problems are traced back to bad management. I did a pretty good job iof explaining why it was managed poorly and how that caused its problems.
Your projected benefits are based on Bush's magical numbers where there is no growth in the working population and a few other nut job things that allow the numbers to look at bleak as they are.
companies are shipping jobs over seas because of cheap labor. Don't tell me they are shipping jobs overseas because Americans are too dumb to do them
greed is at the core of our economic woes.
k eldridge
First, companies move jobs because of oppressive taxes, regulations, and over-priced union wages forced by the barrel of a gun thanks to the democratic old-boy's system. The same system I might add that created the ponzi scheme (social security), from big chief moron FDR, the lying pariah, only to be raped & plundered by the likes of your hero ted (hiccup) kennedy, and the other usual liberal suspects.
I NEVER said American workers are dumb, don't misquote me you weaselly punk. American ingenuity is the premier national resource of the world if your facist liberal govt. regulations get the hell out of the way.
Greed is at the core of our economic woes, but it is the greed of the socialist democrats pandering to their special interest buddies that suckle off of the government teat that causes the collapse, in addition to the idiotological rules forcing banks to lend money to low-income people (who have no means or intentions of paying back),and inner city programs that produce no return on the original investment that was extorted from them in the name of "fairness against racism", and classism.
Calling it a bad program does not make it so. All of its problems are traced back to bad management.
I just don't understand why people put on blinders when it comes to SS. Bad management isn't the issue. The basic construct of the program is such that it avoids making use of the most powerful tenant in finance: compound growth.
The return you would receive if you could invest your SS contributions into private equities far outstrips the benefits you will ever receive from SS. For someone making $50k/year, they would receive around $850,000 in total benefits if they lived for 20 years after retirement. Compare that to the 4-5 million they would have banked if their SS contributions had simply been invested in index funds during their working lifetime.
Your projected benefits are based on Bush's magical numbers
Uh, wrong again. The CBO is responsible for putting out numbers and projections regarding SS.
Those projection slook pretty stable. perhaps lifting the cap on taxable income would fix the problem. Oh, and you do realize there is a difference betyween "cash on hand" and "annual revenue" right? the cash on hand, had we not spent the surplus of the last 35 years would have made up for the deficit easily beyond the projections.
We can "fix" Social Security by simply removing the income cap.
the cash on hand, had we not spent the surplus of the last 35 years would have made up for the deficit easily
Wrong again! The fact that the trust fund is held in T-bills vs. cash doesn't make any difference to the changing realities of our population makeup. Think about it this way, if next year your expenses are going to be 55k and your income only 50k, it doesn't matter if the savings you are going to use to pay the difference is held in a CD or a mutual fund. Your income, or "revenue" it still lower than your expenses. The way your savings is held doesn't change that reality.
We can "fix" Social Security by simply removing the income cap.
While we're at it, why don't we just go ahead and give all our money to the government? Then, they can sort it out and decide how much to give back to us to live on.
While we're at it, why don't we just go ahead and give all our money to the government? Then, they can sort it out and decide how much to give back to us to live on.
Wow Tim, talk about a democratic panacea! I think you cracked their code!
Haha! Yes well, it does seem that nearly every solution Democrats put forward includes raising taxes, doesn't it?
By the way, k eldridge, if you oversee people receiving welfare then you must be one of the government-sponsored social worker jobs that survives by creating victims. Do you fear losing your employment when Americans rise above the victim status if the roadblocks are removed and our economy rockets?
By the way, Chicken, I can lose my job. Why do I have to be a punk. Truth hurt, huh? Your boy Bush bailed out AIG. What do you have to say about that? This economy was not a creation of the Democrats. Republicans occupied both houses, including the White House until 2006. During that period, deregulation took a flight to higher heights. Remember Enron, Worldcom, Tyco....These are corporations buddy. Democrats don't run these companies. These entities are run by the base of the Republican Party. Did you complain when Bush and Cheney gave a no bid contract to Haliburton? Please, tell me you cried.
Your Republicans have pulled the wool over your head. They shield their thievery by distracting you on social security, illegal immigration, welfare programs. This is really a hot button for hard working folk; it is for me too. They throw in abortion and gay marriage to distract you buddy. Stop being spoon fed by Rush and Hannity Chicken. Both these guys are wealthy are you?
When Obama, sends you your check in the form of a tax cut, please endorse it to me, that's of course if you aren't making more than $250 million dollars a year.
You're a punk for qouting me as saying something I never posted. Show me where I called American workers stupid. Your misinformation is very polished. The liberals you play pattycake with must be very proud.
When Obama, sends you your check in the form of a tax cut, please endorse it to me, that's of course if you aren't making more than $250 million dollars a year.
Typical Classism.
