Palin leaves open option of war with Russia

WAINWRIGHT — Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin left open the option Thursday of waging war with Russia if it were to invade neighboring Georgia and the former Soviet republic were a NATO ally. "We will not repeat a Cold War," Palin said in her first television interview since becoming Republican John McCain's vice presidential running mate two weeks ago.

Palin told Charles Gibson of ABC News that she'd favor including Georgia and Ukraine, both former Soviet republics, in NATO despite opposition by Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. Asked whether the United States would have to go to war with Russia if it invaded Georgia, and the country was part of NATO, Palin said: "Perhaps so."

"I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help," she said.

Pressed on the question, Palin responded: "What I think is that smaller democratic countries that are invaded by a larger power is something for us to be vigilant against ... We have got to show the support, in this case, for Georgia. The support that we can show is economic sanctions perhaps against Russia, if this is what it leads to."

She added: "It doesn't have to lead to war and it doesn't have to lead, as I said, to a Cold War, but economic sanctions, diplomatic pressure, again, counting on our allies to help us do that in this mission of keeping our eye on Russia and Putin and some of his desire to control and to control much more than smaller democratic countries."

Palin spoke the same day Putin insisted that Russia has no intention of encroaching on the sovereignty of Georgia, following a brief war that left Russian troops in firm control of two breakaway regions. Putin also aggressively defended the decision to send troops to Georgia, saying Russia had to act after Georgia attacked South Ossetia last month.

On other matters, Palin said she "didn't hesitate" when McCain asked her to be his running mate, a surprise selection that shook up the presidential race.

"I answered him 'yes' because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate," said the 44-year-old Palin, who has been in office less than two years.

Questioned about whether she felt ready to step in as vice president or perhaps even president if something happened to the 72-year-old McCain, Palin said: "I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready."

Gibson also read Palin a comment she made in her former church — "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God" — and asked whether she thought the United States was fighting a holy war.

Palin said she was recalling Abraham Lincoln's words when she made the comment and said: "I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words."

She said she didn't know if her son Track who is headed to Iraq was on a mission from God.

"What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer," Palin said.

Awwwwww Mike...are the poor little Republicans being picked on too much???

How have your corporations been doing at creating jobs???...at keeping gas and grocery prices down??...at increasing wages???...How have Fannie and Freddie done at creating a stable housing market? Thanks, but no thanks buddy!

Looks like your oil companies have been doing a good job of LITERALLY screwing government officials while royalties go unpaid. Corporate America has been screwing the middle class for years and we're tired of it. It's the corporations who have been sucking the taxpayers dry with corporate entitlements. Pay your taxes and quit your @!$%#ing.

And Palin/McCain aren't kicking anyone's arse. They're thrilled that they're finally not losing by 7 points in the popular vote for the first time. They actually pull even in the popular vote and all of the sudden they're 'kicking Obama's arse'. Check out the electoral college and see how well your lipstick duo are doing.

Palin/McCain are going to get DEMOLISHED in the debates when they actually have to answer questions instead of spinning off a teleprompter. We've seen the Rove propaganda machine win two elections in a row with a trained chimp as President, though, so who knows- you may get your corporate tax cuts (but just in case, I'd keep snorting coke and screwing the right bureaucrats)

Palin want a cracker? Because either Palin is a parrot that only repeats what has been force fed to her or she is the mother of the Miss Teen USA SC 2007 because her answer was just a ...how did Charlie say it...Blizzard of words.

Does Palin even realize that Russia is only 8 miles from Alaska, if I was Putin I'd put that first bomb in Palin's hometown, and then take out the oil pipeline. This is what you get when you don't think, and shoot from the hip like Palin and McCain do.

Anyone who still believes that RUSSIA attacked GEORGIA is a mindless sheep. Let me repeat that: A MINDLESS SHEEP. Most mainstream media outlets were even caught red-handed reporting this lie and misconstruing videos of RUSSIANS BEING ATTACKED saying it was GEORGIA BEING ATTACKED, but the retractions were thrown aside seeing as "more important" things were going on such as sex scandals and the like. Anyone who has followed this since day one would know that it is quite the opposite, as GEORGIA started killing innocent RUSSIANS located within South Ossetia and attempted justification by calling it "ethnic cleansing" (sound Hitler-ish to anyone? it should. it's called eugenics). Russia was just defending it's own people. If this dumb pair of breasts is actually even SPEAKING about this, it shows her ignorance and alliance to the higher agenda of corporate elitists. As a result of this whole FARCE, not only has Russia already flown two bombers to Venezuela with Chavez's consent and welcome, but now they are in the process of getting their navy there. A month before this whole thing started, the United States was IN GEORGIA training them on how to do exactly what they are doing. Wake up people. Try listening to an outlet that tells the truth.

people are excited with Palin because many peole feel that they are loser, or their children are loser. In my opinion Palin has only a high school diploma for the job she is seeking. she doesn't have any degree in politics, economy or science. she knows only to give births. people, and especially women, very soon will wake up and see a real loser, who just by luck, in a very far state, has reached to be something. she doesn't have ass to talk to Markel(pro-life or pro-choice ? forget about it) or the russian president about anything. anyway people are got in excitement. republicans will not win this election.

This is scary. To think that someone like this can be VP or President is awfully scary.

Does Palin know what Russia is. Even Ronald Reagan would not have provoked or wish a War with Russia.

Really scary. Does McCain share this view about Georgia integrating NATO and the consequences of this. If McCain shares this view and Palin/McCain were to become President and the US were to integrate Georgia into Nato over the opposition of the Canadian, French, British, German and other nato members... leading to War with Russia... then the US will have to fight that war alone. Talking about coalition of the willing... they will not be any willing... Gordon Brown is not Tony Blair and the US will fight this war alone. The US Allies cannot continue to pay the price for mismanagement of World Affairs by incompetent US President and VP (Bush/ Cheney anyone).

Now what Palin should worry about is not war with Russia, it is the desintegration of NATO... The US does not wield the same power as 8 years ago and the French, Germans, Canadians will not to be members of a NATO being lead to the abyss of a global conflagration by PALIN/McCain eagerness to appear tough.

The serious lack of knowlege by Obama supporters somtimes amazes me Obama has the same position as Palin on inclusion of Georgia in Nato!

Going forward, the United States and Europe must support the people of Georgia. Beyond immediate humanitarian assistance, we must provide economic assistance, and help rebuild what has been destroyed. I have consistently called for deepening relations between Georgia and transatlantic institutions, including a Membership Action Plan for NATO, and we must continue to press for that deeper relationship

You people trash Palin and you DON'T KNOW YOUR OWN CANDIDATE"S POSITION!

War with Russia? Isn't that the shaking trigger finger of George W. Scary, the prospect of it during the cold war was scary enough. Maybe under the McCain Palin administration we can all relearn the words to " Duck and Cover" I love her diplomacy tactics already, I'm sure she'll make great strides with the rest of the world, she's already won over the Russians. Maybe we could call her Sar Apalling

Try harder with this. Why not make the headline, Palin to go to war with Russia.

If you know anything about NATO, you would realize she could have said nothing else. What a bunch of malarky from the AP, dominated by papers for Obama.

I love the United States and I have nothing but gratitude for all the brothers and sisters who have fought, and continue to fight, for this country, but if one thing is for sure, it's that I'll never fight this war about oil. God forbid this situation ever escalates to war with Russia, but if it does, I hope they throw Dick Cheney on the front lines and commence with Operation Get Behind The Devil. I'll move to Australia and pay $8 a gallon for gas before I support anything of the sort. And I have a feeling I wouldn't be the only one leaving.
