John McCain is mocked as an out-of-touch, out-of-date computer illiterate in a television commercial out Friday from Barack Obama as the Democrat begins his sharpest barrage yet on McCain's long Washington career.
The new fighting spirit comes as McCain has been gaining in the polls and some Democrats have been expressing concern the Obama campaign has not been aggressive enough. Obama's campaign says the escalation will involve advertising and pushes made by the candidate, running mate Joe Biden and other surrogates across the country.
"Today is the first day of the rest of the campaign," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe says in a campaign strategy memo. "We will respond with speed and ferocity to John McCain's attacks and we will take the fight to him, but we will do it on the big issues that matter to the American people."
The newest ad showcasing their hard line includes unflattering footage of McCain at a hearing in the early '80s, wearing giant glasses and an out-of-style suit, interspersed with shots of a disco ball, a clunky phone, an outdated computer and a Rubik's Cube.
"1982, John McCain goes to Washington," an announcer says over chirpy elevator music. "Things have changed in the last 26 years, but McCain hasn't.
"He admits he still doesn't know how to use a computer, can't send an e-mail, still doesn't understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class," it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. "After one president who was out of touch, we just can't afford more of the same."
Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the campaign was not making an issue of the 72-year-old McCain's age, but the time he's spent in Washington.
"Our economy wouldn't survive without the Internet, and cyber-security continues to represent one our most serious national security threats," Pfeiffer said. "It's extraordinary that someone who wants to be our president and our commander in chief doesn't know how to send an e-mail."
McCain has said he relies on his wife and staff to work the computer for him and that he doesn't use e-mail.
The ad is being coupled with another positive spot that highlights Obama's change message, arguing he will provide better health care and tax breaks and bring people together.
A spokesman for the Republican National Committee, Alex Conant, accused Obama of "trying to destroy" McCain and running mate Sarah Palin with personal attacks.
"This is more evidence that Obama's politics of hope is just empty words," Conant said in a statement.
Obama has already been showing a newly aggressive tone on the campaign trail in the past week, fighting back against the notion that McCain and Palin will bring change to Washington. Some Democrats have privately groused that Obama is attacking Palin and arguing that job should fall to Biden.
Plouffe made it clear in his memo that the vice presidential nominee will be at the center of the debate going forward. "Senator Biden will be integral to that effort, both in pushing back on the lies that we'll continue to see from our opponents, and in keeping the debate focused on delivering for everyday Americans," Plouffe wrote. He argued that the campaign welcomes a debate over who is best equipped to change the country.
The campaign dispatched Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Rahm Emmanuel, both Illinois Democrats, to lay out the new aggressive tone in a conference call with reporters Friday. They criticized McCain for saying the night before, "It's easy for me to go to Washington and, frankly, be somewhat divorced from the day-to-day challenges people have."
The comment came in a forum marking the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and was supposed to be a break from divisive campaigning, but that didn't stop Obama's campaign from using it against McCain a day later.
McCain made the comment as he defended the significance of Palin's experience as a small-town mayor. Obama agreed later in the forum that mayors have the toughest job in the country and also belittled the work of the Senate.
"We yak in the Senate," Obama said. "They actually have to fill potholes and trim trees and make sure the garbage is taken away."
Obama's campaign says the escalation is not in response to the changing dynamics of the race, but part of a planned strategy timed to the final weeks of the campaign after mourning the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. They insist that although McCain may have gotten a bump in national polls since his pick of Palin, Obama still is best positioned in battleground states for an Electoral College win.
Still, Obama has been playing defense as McCain has tried to grab the change mantel, created new enthusiasm with his pick of Palin and accused Obama of maligning her when he said putting lipstick on a pig is still a pig. In fact, Obama had not been talking about Palin when he made the statement, but heated accusations between the two campaigns over the flap dominated national coverage of his trip to the battleground state of Virginia this week.
The campaign was heartened that Virginia media focused instead on Obama's planned message of reforming schools and drawing contrasts with McCain over education policy. Aides say Obama will continue to highlight differences on issues — like tax policy during a visit to New Hampshire Friday — with the constant theme that Obama will bring change while McCain is no different than Bush.

Hey Barack . . . I'd love to see you land a jet on a pitching carrier in the middle of the Pacific Ocean with live explosives attached . . . I'm pretty sure John McCain has the know how to maneuver his way around a laptop.
You're a cheap shot artist that will always be a ZERO and your campaign is a sham.
When was the last time McCain landed a bomber on carrier?
I'm sorry, but military expertise doesn't always carry over into computer experience. There was a former navy pilot who taught at my high school who, I kid you not, took a pair of scissors to his 5 inch floppy disks so they would fit in the 3.5 inch drives.
So, no. Military expertise =/= computer expertise.
LMAO . . . Is that the best you can do?
You don't even realize you are mocking yourselves in the future.
McCain was in his mid to late 20's and flew well into his 30's . . . and if memory serves me McCain was flying the latest technology at the time.
I'd say the majority of you MTV - John Stewart - Bart Simpson responders are about the same age now.
What's the old joke, "If anybody knew there was going to be an Internet back then, why didn't they have it on Star Trek?"
Some of you act like you invented this stuff . . . Al are you online again?
Your right about one thing . . . Military expertise =/= computer expertise . . . it exceeds it.
Just that, empty talking points.
I'm sorry, but flying pre-1980s aircraft doesn't qualify you as computer literate for today's computers.
Also, VA Don, unless I miscounted, only two lines in your entire post were actually relevant to this discussion. The other five of seven were ad hominem attacks, putting words in my mouth, blanket assertions, and assumptions of my character that aren't accurate to say the least. I can only assume that these statements were made intentionally, regardless of how inaccurate they are.
I believe the COH has a special definition for posts that contain deliberately false information about other posters...
Military expertise =/= computer expertise . . . it exceeds it.
That's like comparing t-shirts and oranges. By the way, you know they have these new crazy computer things in the military. . . right?
I'd say the majority of you MTV - John Stewart - Bart Simpson responders are about the same age now.
What's the old joke, "If anybody knew there was going to be an Internet back then, why didn't they have it on Star Trek?"
We're young & stupid, so we don't know that joke. Sorry.
McCain was in his mid to late 20's and flew well into his 30's . . . and if memory serves me McCain was flying the latest technology at the time.
At the time. He's running for president now. It's far more likely that The President will have to use a computer, something that majority of Americans use. Then an airplane. Not to discredit Senator McCain & his efforts in the military.
Is John McCain going to be flying an A-4 Skyhawk during his (hypothetical) tenure as President of the United States? No? Then how is it relevant?
The POTUS should have a general understanding of things he is going to be dealing with. And communication should be one of those. If a candidate said he doesn't know how to use a phone, would that worry you?
OK - Lets talk about the "Military Experience" - he was a Navy pilot, who spent more time living it up than studying the technology in his jet, pitching or not....;
John McCain may be a decorated war veteran, but he isn't the war hero he makes himself out to be. Those of us in the military - I have served more than 20 years - understand that his military service isn't all that exemplary, in fact its quite ordinary. I have read what I could find about his attendance at Annapolis and I wonder if he would have been able to go there if his father and grandfather hadn't been Admirals. You see - any son or daughter of an academy graduate gets preferential treatment when applying, and given the fact that a good number of the "normal" kids now days attend academy prep schools before they are actually admitted to the academy, I wonder if he had the grades to get in or simply rode in on the coat tails of his family, my bet is - it was the coat tails.
Now for most "normal" graduates, a slot as an aviator won't be available to anyone anywhere near the bottom of the graduating class, those billets are all taken by the top grads who get first choice. Things like Tugboat Commander and Office Supply Manager are left for those at the bottom of the heap, unless of course your father and grandfather are Admirals, then of course different rules apply.
Now any aviator, no matter where they graduated in any class, might remain on flight status, after crashing a single plane even if the investigation shows the slightest possibility that the pilot might have been at fault, surviving a second crash - and I don't mean physically - is very rare, after all planes cost big bucks and having a maverick at the controls who wrecks 5 is simply unheard of, unless of course your father and grandfather are admirals.
John McCain did remain with his prison buddies - yes there are more guys out there who spent time in the Hanoi Hilton - when he could have been released - because his father and grandfather were Admirals - and he is to be commended for that, but it wasn't necessarily heroic, or at least not to the level it has been elevated. The walls of Infantry Hall at Fort Benning are lined with the citations (Medals of Honor) for truly heroic guys who died saving the lives of their comrades, most jumped on hand grenades - now that's heroic!
John McCain came home to a heroes welcome at a time when "military" was a dirty word, did some rehabilitation time and attended the Senior Service College at the National Defense University in Washington DC. He then commanded a Squadron in Florida before retiring - he was not offered a Flag (Admiral) billet, and as far as I can determine never did any Joint Service time, never did any strategic planning or served outside the Navy - hardly a well rounded military background.
So who - in my opinion - has a well rounded background, lets try Colin Powell. This is a guy who did it all on his own, worked hard, graduated with top honors and did the hard jobs, he did them well. There simply isn't any comparison between the two and if you have to look for bonafide military credentials - look to Colin Powell. Now he did trade all that experience and his own personal reputation away trying to be a team player for the Bush administration, but even after he "bet his bars" on bogus intelligence, the Bush administration threw him under bus anyway.
Lets give John McCain credit for service rendered, few even toe the line and volunteer for service these days, but do not anoint this man as a military icon, he took the bull by the horns, rode hard and never quit - but he never took it seriously, he never really considered the consequences of his actions and now he wants to be president. Enough said.
No one can criticize you like your own (military) family...
I was with you on most of this right up to the point you say "he never really considered the consequences of his actions"...
He knew what it meant when he refused release at Hanoi.
I don't want a president that considers the "political consequences" of his actions. I want one that does the right thing - liberal media be damned.
thanks for compiling a pretty good list of McCain's achievements, average though they may be (your opinion). Contrast this with community organization and writing two memoirs...
Colin/Condi would have made a nice ticket.
As a pilot, John McCain had five crack ups and in one case never bothered to learn the new-fangled seat ejection system or how to open the canopy. Hmm, I hope this won't be a metaphor for his administration like AWOL was for Bush and his 900 days of vacationing at Camp David or his dude ranch since taking his "9 to 5" job in the White House.

How can you direct or manage an adminstration if you have no idea on what to do. Just like Palin's comment yesterday... they will do something about global warming but she has no idea on what is causing it. How can you fix the problem if you dont know what the problem is. I boils down to the basics.
Please explain how sending email and using a PC means a person "knows what to do" in any situation. Don't you really see how silly this ad is? What does it have to do with global warming? You do know that there is more than one opinion on the causes of global warming, right?
Funny how such a silly and nonsensical ad can suddenly reach into global warming and decision-making ability.
Please explain how sending email and using a PC means a person "knows what to do" in any situation.
It's a great communication tool. Shows being in touch with the current times.

WOW! You COMPLETELY did not answer the question.
While you're arguing over the bark, step back and look at the tree once in awhile.
Do we want another incurious, isolated president?
Dead on Point..
O-H...

I-O
Why are we going on and on about Senator McCain's use, or non-use, of e-mail? Why is Senator Obama having to use this as a point of contention? Maybe because he doesn't really have any real issues to pick on?
Let's quit the silliness and focus on the important stuff. Is it more important that Senator McCain doesn't use email or that Senator Obama has no idea how the military runs?
SJ
McCain has admitted, some say bragged, that he doesn't know how to use a computer. There is recorded proof. Your proof of Obama's having no idea how the military runs is?
Oh I was unaware that Obama wrote this article....
Senator Obama has NEVER been in the military and, as such, has no idea how it is run nor how it works.
I know. I retired after 20 years of honorable service in the US Navy and those who haven't served in the military have NO idea about it. You can surmise, you can assume, but you don't understand or know what it is like.
I have been at the pointy end of the gun (well, many guns) with folks on the other end unhappy that we were there. Very unhappy. I have been on a ship when missiles were fired at us, luckily they missed. I have tracked enemy combatants, and was involved in the decision to destroy them. I have been in CIC when we had to make the go / no-go decision on shooting down planes. I have been involved in the decision to destroy enemy assets, many many times (unfortunately), knowing that there would be collateral damage.
I've been deployed, away from my family, for many many months. I was deployed when family died, and when family was born. I was deployed for my children's birthdays, for anniversaries, and for many holidays. I stood watches at midnight, at oh dark 30, knowing that I wouldn't be there when my children woke up. I have had to say, on minutes notice, goodbye to my family.
I'm a purple suiter. I was in the Navy but assigned to Marine units, an Army unit, and an Air Force unit and I served at three joint commands. I and everybody who has served in the military knows how it is run, and what it takes. It does not take knowledge of sending e-mails. It takes much more than that. MUCH MUCH MORE.
And yes, I have landed and been shot off a carrier a time or two and that alone is an interesting event!
SJ
Until you've b
Sandjockey, do you feel comfortable with a pilot that may have been the cause of an explosion on the deck of a ship because he was goofing off and caused the death of 100+ people and millions of dollars of damage? Sure the OFFICIAL record doesn't say so. My dad knew men that were there. (my father was a 3 year Vietnam vet and retired military hero, 2 Purple Hearts, Silver Star, Bronze Star and others)
Think Forestall.
What a load of horse apples...
My dad knew a guy that had a friend that was related to that heard....
Senator Obama has NEVER been in the military and, as such, has no idea how it is run nor how it works.
Good thing he can call Wesley Clark & Colin Powell. I believe they may have a good idea of how that whole military thing works. Even better than John McCain.
There have been numerous GREAT Presidents through US history that have NO military experience.
Military experience is not needed as a qualification for the office.
1. Senator McCain had nothing to do with the accident aboard the Forrestal. To even imply that is to show how little you know or care.
2. You are right, there have been numerous presidents who haven't served in the military. I never said otherwise. I also didn't say you had to serve in the military IOT be qualified for office. What I did say that having been in the military is a much better harbinger of a person's ability to lead than is the ability to send an e-mail.
3. Wesley Clark and Colin Powell are great names to bandy about. However, if you are going to use that analogy then I guess it is fair to say that Senator McCain can call on Ray Tomlinson, Marc Andreesen, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, or, hell, even his secretary, if he needs help with e-mail.
SJ
1. Senator McCain had nothing to do with the accident aboard the Forrestal. To even imply that is to show how little you know or care.
Not true. McCain's aircraft was struck by a misfiring missile from another aircraft. This precipitated the Forrestal disaster.
See, he did have something "to do with it." He was a victim. Get your damn facts straight.
How in the world does McCain expect to read the blogs, buy on ebay, live through text messages, or feel the pulse of the wacky left if he doesn't know how to do computer stuffins?
Seems to me the ObamaAd serves to highlight McCain's long service to this country. Who thinks of these things? Must be like TV producers, young and full of ***.
McCain is a voracious reader. Maybe ebooks isn't his cup of tea. Nor mine.
Just think of all the great times he is missing on myspace and youtube!!!!! This is the dumbest ad and conversation yet.
Anderson,
last I checked joining these conversations was voluntary
Palin/Mccain=The Real Bridge to Nowhere

simmons: may I suggest, in keeping with the theme of the ad, "Palin/McCain: GIGO"?

I love it.
I'm almost surprised that McSame didn't some how tie his lack of knowledge of technology to the time he spent in the POW camp. Think of the sympathy votes he would have got out of that!!!
I don't believe anyone here is saying that because he doesn't use email that he shouldn't be president, it's just yet one more nail in his coffin, no pun intended and certainly don't wish him any ill will but when my 84 year old mother can send me more emails then I have time to respond to you gotta question it.
One more point: never mind that he's a presidential candidate that can't send email I can't believe he's a US Senator that can't send a friggin email!!!!!!!!
Blah, Blah, Blah . . . I'd FIRE the IDIOT that approved this advertisement. You leave your candidate wide open to McCain's life experiences that directly challenge the message . . . McCain's a former Navy Pilot that flew off of carriers (most of you clowns only make believe doing this on your laptops) . . . McCain understood the mechanics of the jet he flew, when your 30K feet in the air you're all alone (The old saying in the computer repair field is, "we've isolated the problem and it appears to be between the chair and the keyboard).
McCain Out of touch . . . I don't think so . . . I'm more inclined to say the IDIOT that approved this ad is out of touch with the people.
OH ! ! ! Wait a minute . . . didn't Barack introduce himself and say he approved this ad?
OOPS ! ! ! We Found Our Out of Touch IDIOT.
hey idiot!! Running a country isn't flying a jet. Hello? He is Not the only person that has done remarkable work in the service but not a president. I am getting tired of that excuse. He is out of touch and Obama is not idiot///...
Equating a 1980s (at the latest) era plane to operating laptop is like trying to equate knife fighting to cooking, because both of them use knives. "There's lots of blinking lights and complicated steps, CLEARLY they are the same!"
Apples =/= oranges.
LMAO . . . is that the best you can do . . . Apples =/= oranges?

I'll give you my standard answer now . . . based on the majority of the comments I've seen, if I was your parent, I'd ask the school for my money back . . . some of you Einstein's really crack me up :)
McCain understood the mechanics of the jet he flew
That explains why he crashed so many!
One may even have dropped a bomb on deck that cost lives and damage to the ship-look into the USS Forestall.
He sure did get a quick transfer off that ship. I wonder why.
VA Don seems to be posting the same post repeatedly. 30.3 is nearly identical to the one he posted here, and it contains the same fallacies/non-content.
One may even have dropped a bomb on deck that cost lives and damage to the ship-look into the USS Forestall.

MORE LIBRUL LIES.
It was a missile, not a bomb.
; D
Does your mommy and daddy know you are playing on the computer again?
Do I need to explain the difference between a book and a blog?
I thought so . . . a book is a collection of words that tells a story with a beginning, middle and end. A book is usually published by a company that agrees to take on the risk and cover any liability issues for the facts in the book. A well written book will cover numerous aspects of its subject and allows the reader the opportunity to analyze the information. A book states who the author is, it's sources of information, and credits for assistance.
A blog on the other hand is a collection of words that has no beginning, middle or end. It's used to spread false and/or distorted information about its subject. A blog can be started by any Tom, Dick or Harry that assumes no liability for their stated facts. A blog seldom shows the true authors name, sources of information are hardly mentioned, and motives are always suspect.
The moral of this . . . read a book before you blog (fairy tales don't count). Your information sources are more reliable and you may actually learn something . . . what are you afraid of . . . the truth?
(LMAO . . . I just love this banter . . . sometimes it just too easy.)
A book can be fiction, a collection of fairytales, innuendo, gossip, lies and distortions.
A blog can be written by journalists, elected officials, and members of the intelligence community.
Don't mistake the medium for the message. ;)
You know, it's funny.
You appear to be looking down on people who post on blogs... yet, here you are.
You appear to be criticizing me and other bloggers for not sharing our names... yet, neither have you.
You appear to point out that blogs are inherently wrong because they don't state their sources... yet, you haven't stated a single source to back up your claims.
Your entire talking point revolves around an ad hominem attack rather than a well-thought-out platform of ideas.
Please, you're doing a disservice to the true republican and conservative bloggers. I'll speak with you again once you're willing to move past ad hominem attacks and childish behavior.
warren buffet is also computer illiterate....doesn't use them....doesn't send emails...
whats the point here?
Is warren buffet running for president?
The point is that both campaigns have dipped below the 3rd grade level. At least, that's how I read it!!
And yet, those who are blinded by political party loyality can't see the foolishness.
Um, he's not running for the presidency?
Maybe he should.
yes both campaigns have gone below 3rd grade level...pretty typical...
i guess the president would have plenty of time to get online and surf the net and check the fair and balanced news media....put up a myspace page...check out the latest youtube videos...
then of course he could also communicate via email with other world leaders...attach a powerpoint presentation to communicate with...that would save some trips overseas...
point is being computer saavy has nothing to do with being the president...
*cough* McCain actually has a myspace page.
Newsvine's own CEO Mike D. had his myspace design "borrowed" without permission (to put it politely) by the McCain campaign, using Mike's bandwidth for the loading of images that resided on Mike's server. Mike D. changed those images and McCain's campaign got "caught" red-handed appropriating digital property that did not belong to McCain. It was quite the prank. This happened around a year ago.
Likewise, the McCain campaign has been caught red-handed violating the copyrights to music used in that campaign, not once, not twice, but five times!
I see a pattern emerging here.
Being computer illiterate is most definitely a handicap in the 21st century. It means you can't adapt to technological change.
Maybe he should.
He's too busy doing charity work with Gates & Bono.
Barack Hussein Obama is a riotous joke!
No, McCain is not computer illiterate. But you know what is funny? Barack, who aspires to be commander-in-chief, commented that he "thought about" serving in the military.
Just like he is now thinking he'd like to be president.
In lieu of military service, Senator Barack Obama got some cute pictures last July with Gen. David H. Petraeus, flying in a helicopter above Baghdad. I bet that Barack has never handled let alone shot a firearm. If he doesn't understand the operations of a basic firearm, I bet he was pretty damn overwhelmed with his exposure to more sophisticated pieces of military artillery while he was taking in his photo opportunities in Iraq over the summer.
Message to Barack: Don't worry, McCain can handle email. You can't even handle a revolver, so don't aspire to be commander-in-chief while America is fighting a war on terrorism. Go back to Illinois, get a job as a community organizer, and light a fire under every liberal's ass in south Chicago.
The next six weeks will be fun watching Obama's aspirations go down in flames.
Funny that a girl can be 17 and know how to be mom. She doesn't know just like I didn't know how to be a mom at 25. Isn't this the same stupid circular argument. BO can't be POTUS b/c he wasn't in military and can't fire a gun. Well in the same token, JM can't be POTUS b/c he can't use a computer. Ridiculous.
John McCain is the real joke.
I hope the next six weeks people like you use their brain.
McCain/Palin ....thanks but no thanks
@class of 69, GMM/520347
Ad hominem attacks against other posters is inflammatory and adds nothing to the debate. If I'm not mistaken, they violate the COH as well...
No, McCain is not computer illiterate
You should say "literate". Because that's a double negative.
In lieu of military service, Senator Barack Obama got some cute pictures last July with Gen. David H. Petraeus, flying in a helicopter above Baghdad.

I'm not sure if he's ever shot a fire arm or not. He's a pretty smart guy with that Harvard degree and all, I believe can figure out how out a basic firearm. He should be overwhelmed by the great weaponry we have. It's impressive. Especially that stuff that is controlled by computers.
Message to Barack: Don't worry, McCain can handle email.
Actually he said he can't.
You can't even handle a revolver, so don't aspire to be commander-in-chief while America is fighting a war on terrorism.
I think he can probably handle a revolver. Just for your information, the President actually doesn't fight in the war. And he's fully prepared to take on the terrorism.
Go back to Illinois, get a job as a community organizer, and light a fire under every liberal's ass in south Chicago.
He might do that if he doesn't win in November. Community organizers are a great asset in society. They change history & inspire & do a lot of good work.
Senator McCain flew a sophisticated fighter-bomber (Navy A-4) and finished flight school and inspite of all the digging up of what he didn't accomplish still outshines Obama. That aircrft for its time was as complex as today's computers.
What did Obama do, fly a desk in inner urban Chicago!!
What does flying a jet have anything to do with Mr. McCain not knowing how to run a computer. I find it interesting that even though he will have the ideas and be able to promote the US and is SMART enough to fly a jet, he can't find the time or find the need to teach himself to learn how to email. I guess all heads of state better use only the phone or in person to communicate with our next POTUS if it is in fact McCain. Get with the times, please.
"I guess all heads of state better use only the phone or in person to communicate with our next POTUS if it is in fact McCain. Get with the times, please."
Wow, do you really think that we communicate with heads of state via email?
No, they use text messaging. We would have to make sure Putin knows what ROTFLMAO means.
Do you know that they don't use e-mail? or some form of electronic communication to convey information or documents? I'm not saying they definitly do, but are you SURE they don't? it is awfully useful.
Senator McCain flew a sophisticated fighter-bomber (Navy A-4) and finished flight school
And crashed 4 of them. He also probably wouldn't have been in flight school if not for his grandfather/father.
"And crashed 4 of them." FAIL
Straight from FactCheck.org
"McCain did lose two Navy aircraft while piloting them, both due to engine failure. A third was destroyed on the deck of the carrier USS Forrestal when hit by a missile fired accidentally from another plane, triggering a disastrous fire that killed 134 sailors and nearly killed McCain. A fourth plane was lost when he was shot down over North Vietnam on a bombing mission over Hanoi. There's no evidence that any of the four destroyed planes were lost to pilot error.
A fifth alleged "crash" turns out to be a misinterpretation of a biographer's description of a flight accident that did not result in the loss of the aircraft."
transformation
Thank you for setting the record straight. I wish we had more of this for the distortions on both sides. And, it DOES happen on both sides!)
You know...reading the causes for those airplane crashes makes me a little worried about the quality of the equipment our armed forces use. Two engine failures, one weapons failure (which resulted in 100+ casualties)? Was this a common thing in the armed forces, or did McCain simply have the bad luck of getting assigned to the planes that missed quality control?
You know...reading the causes for those airplane crashes makes me a little worried about the quality of the equipment our armed forces use. Two engine failures, one weapons failure
Don't worry. We have much smarter computers now to help deal with situations. And hopefully move to fully unmanned equipment.
I am really enjoying the comments, computers/e-mail, text messaging, et. al, does it really qualifies a persons to become a president. In 2004, we had the wind surfing, goose hunting, swift boat driving John Kerry. In those day the subject matter of debates also included electronic gizmo's - it was part of the "rock the vote" theme. People went out and cast their vote for the most qualified person at the time. lets stop bull sh.....ing one another and stick to the issues; if issues is not your thing vote your party's platform and let the cards fall where they will. If your a dem. i couldn't possibly change your mind and likewise with me. regards to all.
I completely agree. Enough is Enough. Well said.
I want a president that is prepared for the 21st century, not longing for the 20th. Please note that I am not using nasty one liners, or making personal attacks. A lot of what I've read on these blogs are the very reasons we ,as a nation, are so divided. I want my country back! Obama/Biden 2008
Obama needs to be really careful using this kind of approach. There's a whole potful of LIKELY VOTERS out there with those same pictures (big glasses, disco balls) stuck in their photo albums. I keep my rubik's cube on my dresser.
And yes, I know how to use email, instant messaging, blah blah blah. And when something comes up that I can't figure out, I call that computer guy that doesn't have to make executive decisions and earns half my salary.
Your statement makes sense. I have found myself calling the computer guy more than once.
He can fix any issues I may have with the comp, but I would not be comfortable letting our
comp guy make the decisions on how to run anything else around this place !
When Obama puts out an ad everyone says "Obama needs to be careful" Why? McCain has smeered Obama with lies for months now and before that it was Hillary. Give me a break. Enough of your stupid stuff. Obama has the same rights whether you like it or not. He has focused on issues important to us from day 1. McCain has offered nothing to the American people but 20th century ethics and ideals. Give me a break. Obama has done a fantastic job getting his message across when the media allows it and doesn't slam him for every little word he says. I don't think a VP choice and a Presidential runner needs to be smeering the Dems all the time. Complain complain complain and they still aren't talking about issues. (except to start a war with Russia)
"As I stated in April this year, I am committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia. This commitment has long been a fundamental building block of U.S. policy, and it will not change under the Obama administration. I also affirm Georgia's right to pursue NATO membership. This aspiration in no way threatens the legitimate defense interests of Georgia's neighbors." - Barack Obama
When Obama puts out an ad everyone says "Obama needs to be careful" Why? McCain has smeered Obama with lies for months now
Because a good chunk of McCain's voters will vote republican no matter what. McCain could say he's Christ, and some people would still vote for him.
So, let me get this straight; you are technologically savvy if you can bang out an e-mail or surf the web like my 9 year old, but a technology dunce if "all" you can do is fly a fighter jet? Can The Messiah land an F-16 on a carrier deck? Is this the best you Obama kool-aid drinkers have?
Why do we have low expectations of our selves on one hand and then complain about our jobs being shipped over seas on the other hand. Maybe it's time that someone calls out all the Americans who are currently living in the dark age because we do operate in a global economy were kids in India are more computer savvy then American adults. Since when was it OK to settle in life and not raise our expectations of people? I'm sorry, if there truly is a large population of people in the United States that can't even send an email, we are in deep, deep, deep dog doo!
Still undecided as to how I will vote. But just to make a point....10 months ago I had never sent an e-mail in my life ! Someone only had to show me once and the rest is history. It took less than two days for me to get comfortable on my new comp and start living up to speed with the rest of the world !
I think it might take slightly longer than that to get me savvy on our military and how to proceed in that dept.
There are many brilliant people who have never been on line....I think they should take a spin, they are missing out.
Isn't it amazing? There are so many important issues and problems facing Americans. Yet, both parties have lowered the discussions to lipstick on pigs and email. And, here we are, following the distractions. And, yes, that includes me. We should, maybe, demand more from them and ourselves.
I agree, nicely put. Kudos.
May 2006: McCain voted against an amendment that would provide $20 million to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for health care facilities.
April 2006: McCain was one of only 13 Senators to vote against $430,000,000 for the Department of Veteran Affairs for Medical Services for outpatient care and treatment for veterans.
March 2006: McCain voted against increasing Veterans medical services funding by $1.5 billion in FY 2007 to be paid for by closing corporate tax loopholes.
March 2004: McCain once again voted for abusive tax loopholes over veterans when he voted against creating a reserve fund to allow for an increase in Veterans' medical care by $1.8 billion by eliminating abusive tax loopholes. Jeez, McCain really loves those tax loopholes for corporations, since he voted for them over our veterans' needs.

I am sure Mccain has visited this site...er opps that's right he can't because he does not know how...
Too busy NOT SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS..John Mccain Hypocrisy at it's Best!!
and sleeping while at work
Simmons, you forgot to put the one paragraph in the wording for an MIA/POW bill that McCain wanted to increase the service persons 'Missing in Action' time from hours to 10 days. Seems to me even here in the civilian world you don't wait ten days to report someone is missing.
Our next president must necessarily unleash, inspire, and push our country toward cutting edge 21st century creative technological innovation and thus can not afford to be a president unwilling and uninspired to even bother with learning and understanding the basics of our existing technology which even our children know and use.
Agreed.
This election, no this country, is about turning the page forward for America.
Republicans guard their past like the hope diamond. When I say past, I mean the power structure of the 20th Century. They fear change.
I remember the looks on some GOP mugs when McCain co-opted Obama message and announced his campaign slogan of "Change" instead of "Experience".
His base seemed to be saying, "Wait John, what's the problem? Minorities live in contained inner-city ghettos with sub-standard public school systems and no healthcare. We've managed to squeeze every ounce of blood from the American worker over the past 30 years and funnel it up to the CEOs and Corporate Execs. We have the American workforce convinced that any demands for more benefits or better wages will be viewed as hostile to corporate America, and they will take their business elsewhere."
But then John winked and said, "Don't worry, guys - this is all horsesh*t."
And they roared with applause!
I agree with Andrew Romano.

"Using the Internet doesn't really contribute to your understanding of tech-related public policy, and legislators (and presidents) regularly make laws about stuff they've never actually experienced firsthand (like, again, farming or immigration). Reader S.M. provides a perfect example:
[Supreme Court Justice] David Souter doesn't use email/computers at all really (I actually am not sure how often he uses telephones-- I know they had a hard time tracking him down when Rehnquist died and he was up in New Hampshire). But he wrote the opinion in the Grokster case, which as Jeffrey Toobin put it "showed an extremely sophisticated understanding of the very modern technology of file-sharing."
Surely you are not trying to suggest that Senator McCain is the intellectual that Judge Souter is.
Do you think Judge Souter was downloading music files? NO
"But he wrote the opinion in the Grokster case, which as Jeffrey Toobin put it "showed an extremely sophisticated understanding of the very modern technology of file-sharing.""
You can know about things without actually experiencing them. That is the point I was making.
Name calling........it's like running for student president back in elementary school. Hopefully someone will step up and be an adult. America has real problems like gas prices, the war on Iraq, and immature presidential nominees are not helping the outlook of AMERICA.
Obama has been doing that, you must be looking at the McCain camp. I rarely do because they have had nothing to offer the American people except the votes against our Vets.
Hear! Hear! Pragmatic in MI! I hope to hear a discussion about issues and not snipe one-liner smears about any candidate.
Obama spokesman Dan Pfeiffer said the campaign was not making an issue of the 72-year-old McCain's age, but the time he's spent in Washington.
And what does the author think?
McCain has said he relies on his wife and staff to work the computer for him and that he doesn't use e-mail.
When?
Still, Obama has been playing defense as McCain has tried to grab the change mantel, created new enthusiasm with his pick of Palin and accused Obama of maligning her when he said putting lipstick on a pig is still a pig. In fact, Obama had not been talking about Palin when he made the statement, but heated accusations between the two campaigns over the flap dominated national coverage of his trip to the battleground state of Virginia this week.
Pickler is a pro-Obama writer and obvious Democrat, like most AP writers. There is no proof as to this obviously biased claim about the use of lipstick. Obama has show a regular propinsity of misogynist statements throughout the campaign. And his attack here is more of the attacks against older people.
If you believe that our president needs to use email to communicate, you better know more about technology than the suits McCain wore in the 1980s, when we have seen only a small number of pictures of Obama which I am certain will come out.
If Obama knows so much, ask him about security and emails. If he plans on running our country on email, God help us all.
What do we do with Obama and Ayers?
How about Obama and ACORN? (check out the site rottenacorn.com)
How about Obama and Wright?
He has had many questionable liaisons and friendships. I don't know how people can be so blind! Note, I did not question your intelligence. Intelligent people blinded by the O
My God help us was directed at if Obama takes over. He is the one who uses email and texting and says that McCain is too old to do so.
politicalcenter,
I know what you were saying! I was adding some fuel to the fire.
Have you seen the ad and read these comments. I will tell you what I think. I think his youth vote lead is shrinking. I think he had to do this ad, because he has no votes to speak of from those 50 and older. I think he is really desparate now, and living in the blogoshere.
I think he is losing big time. And will not recover.
He has always been a hater and is leading that change now. Not McCain. He raises truth and is bashed for doing something else. But Obama, who does not know the truth when it hits him in the eyes. Who sees America through black liberation eyes. Who is as out of touch with America as his bitter and guns comment shows.
A fake in any other dress is still a fake. Even if it is national dress.
PC,
I did read and I am with you 100%. BHO represents all that is wrong with our country! What were the Dems thinking when they put this impostor in front of the American public?
I think Obama's arrogance will be his undoing!
BHO represents all that is wrong with our country!
Being highly educated & inspiring young people! That is horrible!
jfrank,
"Being highly educated & inspiring young people! That is horrible!"
You can be highly educated and inspire young people in the wrong direction. That is what is horrible! I certainly don't want BHO influencing what my kids think and believe!
Is the Republican side any better?
"It's not illegal if you can get away with it" ... "It's not lying, it's just bad PR" ... "Ethics are for people who can't afford good lawyers."
Those are GREAT lessons to teach our kids < / dripping sarcasm>
As to his mocking of Mc Cain as I child would..nananananana...his true colors and dispositions are starting to show brightly(glaring)...it was only a matter of time. And no...I support neither one of these men who are complicit in presenting a drama for the sheeple...to distract them from the true agenda.
remember people ...there are many other candidates and viable parties. Send a message! Now.
Email,call,fax...donate your time.
Thanks. I was looking to see if anyone would pick up the intentional or unintentional use of the word "mock" in the title of this article. Interesting word.
Wow, aren't we clever. You picked up on the negative word the AP used to garner attention for the original article. "Mock" is the opinion of the AP reporter and obviously used because of it's attention getting characteristics.
Why don't you try coming up with your own definition of the ad instead of stealing it from the headline?
I'll give you mine:
Obama points out McCain's failure to adjust to change and his ties to George Bush.
Failure to adjust to change?...a value of yours and Obamas. More technosavy and you prove yourself to your peers? What happened to wisdom and the ability to behave like an adult?...but I guess that's how you win a Presidency ...by being childish, belittling and arrogant instead of proving ones worth as a leader by showing maturity and civility.
Mocking was a good choice of a descriptive indicating the drama being played out for the sheeple by both parties of corruption. Don't you just love it?
Don't I wish some real humans were presented with the obscene 66 million that Obama raised for his campaign last month...for what? media? Beer? Office snacks?party hats?
what good I could do with all that money, both parties have raised ,for the healing of our nation and i don't even want or have to be president.
if it shows me anything as how they spend this money in their ads,it's their lack of wisdom and their inability to realistically effect a lasting good...due to the reason they serve and worship money instead of the interests of the Nation and People.
Petty and Silly.
I watched the presidential forum last night and they agreed on everything. They agree on alot of things actually.
Even an old dog can be taught new tricks, does anyone think that McCain is capable of learning how to E mail? Then what would Obama attack him with ? Like I said Petty!
Seems like a lot of people are operating with blinders on as to why this latest commercial is most important. The only reason someone of John McCain's position, intelligence, experience and station in life hasn't mastered a PC and usage of the internet is because he chose to do so. This shows a real lack of flexibility and desire to understand the world you're trying to operate in and impact as a high level politician. One who has aspirations for the highest office in the land. In my opinion this is also another issue where you can't have it both ways. You can't suddenly do a 180 spin and try to re-brand yourself as an agent of change when you're so resistant to change and usage of the everyday tools of modern life. This is incongruent and illogical thinking demonstrated at its finest. If it walks like a duck, talks like a talk,...well you know the rest. We live in a world where information flows constantly, terrorists create cyber-security concerns,e-commerce is a part of everyday life, and on and on. It's another example of McCain's focus on issues he's comfortable with at the expense of others that impact the majority of people in this country like the economy. Remember this verified quote from McCain when he told the Boston Globe in December 2007, ""The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." I could care less about McCain's age and feel the real issue is that lack of intellectual curiosity and understanding of areas beyond the military and foreign policy that he seems to demonstrate again and again.
Its not that he admints to now knowing how to send an email. It makes it appear that he's relegating email to a minor function - as something that just has to get done; and that is the problem. This indicates to me that he does not truly understand the importantce of this mode of communication. Which then begs the question, what other technology does he not understand. Regardless if you have staff that handles your day-day communications, having the knowledge and understanding the importance of the underlying technology is critical.
Therefore, when he stated that his wife or staff handles his email, he considered it an afterthought. He does not need to know how email works, or teleconferencing, etc., but must understand what this technology means (not only to him and government, but industry as a whole).
McCain: "I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. I have the luxury of being in contact with them literally all the time."
Why would you email someone (asynchronous communication) if you could call them and talk to them without waiting for them to read your email and respond?
When you don't wear a flagpin, you are "unpatriotic".
When you support the political party who's main goal is the secession of the state which you currently govern, you are "bi-partisan"
If a Republican calls a Democrat's daughter ugly, it's just his "sense of humor". If a Democrat calls a Republican's stance on absitinance only education hypocritical because her 17 year old daughter is pregnant, it's "attacking a candidates family."
If you're a minority and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a "token hire." If you're a conservative and you're selected for a job over more qualified candidates you're a "game changer."
If you live in an Urban area and you get a girl pregnant you're a "baby daddy." If you're the same in Alaska you're a "teen father." (Actually, according to your own MySpace page you're an F'n redneck that don't want any kids, but that's too long a phrase for the evil liberal media to take out of context and flog morning noon and night).
Black teen pregnancies? A "crisis" in black America . White teen pregnancies? A "blessed event."
If you grow up in Hawaii you're "exotic." Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you're the quintessential "American story."
Similarly, if you name you kid Barack you're "unpatriotic." Name your kid Track, you're "colorful."
If you're a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you're "reckless." A Republican who doesn't fully vet is a "maverick."
If you say that for the "first time in my adult lifetime I'm really proud of my country" it makes you "unfit" to be First Lady. If you are a registered member of a fringe political group that advocates secession that makes you "First Dude."
A DUI from twenty years ago is "old news." A speech given without proper citation from twenty years ago is "relevant information."
And, finally, if you're a man and you decide to run for office despite your wife's reoccurrence of cancer you're a "questionable spouse." If you're a woman and you decide to run for office despite having five kids including a newborn... Well, we don't know what that is 'cause THAT'S NOT A FAIR QUESTION TO ASK.
Best Piece I have read in a bit :)
