WASILLA — Ben Harrell waited for Gov. Sarah Palin to stop by at his Mocha Moose coffee house like she does most days she's back home. But things are different now when she's in town.
Now she's the Republican vice presidential candidate, with U.S. Coast Guard boats parked in the middle of Lucille Lake watching her nearby home and state troopers guarding the access road leading to her property.
Harrell thought Palin would stop in Friday anyway to order her regular — a skinny white chocolate mocha. She's still Sarah, after all, even if her life has been turned upside down by Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign.
"You'll never see another Sarah Palin. It's just who she is," said Harrell, 56, who has owned the coffee house for 15 years. "She'll be coming in. I can almost guarantee it."
Palin's return this week to Alaska has brought the reality of her national campaign with McCain for the White House home to the people who know her best.
To some, she is the same tough political fighter they've watched for more than a decade, a woman prepared for any adventure. And that makes her a true Alaskan in their eyes.
This is the state after all that Palin herself said this week has a special distinction — "Alaska: where men are men and women win the Iditarod," she told supporters at a welcome rally.
"People in the lower 48 have to know how we live up here, what makes her who she is," said Nikki Shanigan, a 55-year-old oil field worker from Wasilla. "It takes a lot to live up here. If you're not born into it, the cold and the dark, you can't handle it. It takes a strong person."
To others, Palin is the same ambitious, untested candidate who's served less than two years as governor, a woman mostly eager to find an audience. And that makes her a true politician in their eyes.
"I'm embarrassed to be from Alaska right now," said Lindsay Solie, a 22-year-old waitress in Fairbanks. "It's really not just political rhetoric that she could be a heartbeat away from being president. This person just really doesn't have the experience, the formal education."
There's been a lot written and said about Palin outside of Alaska since her selection as McCain's running mate shoved her onto the national stage last month. Ralph Nelson, a 63-year-old retired truck driver from Wasilla, has watched it all unfold with amusement.
"She's a showboater. She loves the attention," said Nelson, a self-described hard-core Democrat who supports Sen. Barack Obama, and a rare find in this mostly Republican state. It's no wonder Palin received glowing reviews for her GOP convention speech, he said.
It reminds Nelson of the time she made a high-profile trip to Iraq shortly after becoming governor in December 2006. "She was elected to go to Juneau, not Iraq," Nelson said. "But she got a lot of attention with that."
That's the Sarah Palin that Nelson has watched as she has soared in political office since being elected to the Wasilla town council in 1992, then Wasilla mayor in 1996 and Alaska governor in 2006.
True, Nelson said, Palin seems an unlikely vice president because she lacks foreign policy experience and hasn't tackled national issues. But she knows how to give a speech, and she's an attractive, plain-speaking politician unafraid of controversy, he said.
"I like Sarah," he said. "I believe the lady has a lot of common sense. I think she'll do a good job of it," Nelson said, adding quickly that he won't vote for her. That would mean he'd have to vote Republican, and he can't stomach the thought of voting for McCain.
"I was hoping for an Obama-Palin ticket," he said. "I'd love to see that."
Stu Ashton, a 73-year-old retired civil engineer, said he doesn't understand why the rest of the country is concerned about Palin's lack of experience in national affairs. She's genuine, down-to-earth and a hard worker, he said.
"This guy Obama got for his running mate, I never heard of him before," said Ashton, referring to Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, who has served more than three decades in the Senate.
John Binkley, a former Republican state senator, said he made the mistake of underestimating Palin's appeal when he ran against her in the 2006 GOP gubernatorial campaign. He reminded voters that she was a little-known, small-town mayor unaware of the serious issues facing the state.
"I watched her evolve over time in the campaign," said Binkley, now a Palin supporter. "As she got into the campaign, I watched how she worked, how she studied. She really came into her own."
The town of Wasilla, with 7,000 residents living in the cloudy shadows of the snow-peaked Chugach Mountains, is peppered with signs of support for the hometown celebrity — "Go Sarah, we love you," outside a local bar; "Congratulations Gov. Palin" on a theater billboard; and "Palin Fever" on the front of Harrell's Mocha Moose coffee house.
Harrell has special coffee drinks named after Palin, like the Road to the White House (rocky road white chocolate mocha) and Palin Fever (peppermint flavored latte). He never got a chance to show Palin because she didn't stop by Friday.
He understands. Things are different.
Since I bash AP regularly, a bit of fresh air here. If the things are different were left out of the equation, which seems to be a forced discussion, and the interviews remained, there is a fair balance here. Completely balanced would be four out of five. I did not count, but assume that it favored Obama a bit more.
On the other hand, the comments are interesting and less biased than those from other mass media centers. For that, and a well-written article, thank you very much!
Yes, fresh air quoting the politically attuned voters in Alaska.
Heck who would know about a Senator who's been serving since Reagan was in office? No biggie who's on Foreign Relations when Russia's seen across the way in the months when there's light
oooh, now I know what credentials Palin has to be VP and possible Pres. of the Nation
"She's genuine, down-to-earth and a hard worker, he said."
What a joke. How many more people of Alaska continue to be blind to the fact she is not ready. I don't know how many times, I've not gotten a job because of lack of experience in my lifetime. So for VP its ok. Because she "down-to-earth". So running the Nation, the entire Nation, your finances, your safety, your children's future, everything valuable to you only needs the qualification of being "down-to-earth".
Plus she is running with McCain. Are the people of Alasks so blind that they will vote for McCain just to see her in office? The man who tells rape jokes like its nothing. The man who has ran a campaign without integrity. The man who's only answer is being a POW and screaming Mavrick, Mavrick.
People hate Obama so much they turn the TV before actually listening to his solutions, his policies and plans for progress for the American people. All people hear are raise taxes, raise taxes. But do people realize taxes help fund our children's education system, taxes help police our communities, taxes help feed the poor and individually we wouldn't even notice a slight increase across millions of people? But the real issue is he wants to also raise taxes to those making over $250,000 (who can afford it) and give tax relief to businesses who won't send American jobs overseas.
Yet Bush cut's DIVIDEND tax (don't mean squat to you, if your don't receive dividends from a business), cuts tax to the poor who don't make enough to see substantial value (Bush thinks he's slick) then turn around and increase sales tax and also cut social security and medicare benefits to pay for all the tax cuts. That's why its so hard for parents and grandparents to pay for medicine!
So you want to believe McCain, go ahead. Let him add to the $455 trillion spent on the war, where the troops don't have enough supplies. (shaking head). Or where all the money found with Sadam is now where? He could have used that to pay for some of the war? Who keeps borrowing money putting this country in soooo much dept. to fight a war for what?
The surge was meant to provide protection until Iraq had its gov't set up. Pulling out 80,000 doesn't make it successful. It' propaganda. Bush Administration and all those who agree are full of greed and are liars who hide behind religion, but are not religious.
I'm starting to feel sad to be an American. So I'm voting to reclaim the pride of the PEOPLE of America.
One Party, Then why the heck would anyone cast their vote for Obama if experience is the issue? Sarsah Palin on all accounts is far more qualified and experienced..Your comment makes NO sence what so ever.
Who Am I?
I am under 45 years old,
I love the outdoors,
I hunt,
I am a Republican reformer,
I have taken on the Republican Party establishment,
I have many children,
I have a spot on the national ticket as vice president with less than two years in the governor's office.
Did you guess?
I am Teddy Roosevelt in 1900
tipper, you've got it...All these folks try to tear down Palin's experience while being blinded by the show Mr. Obama puts on. Obama needs to actually do something before I would even consider him a viable candidate. I have yet gotten to know who this man really is. His past affiliations influence my opinion of him, and I believe because he is an admitted Muslim, his ties to people that do not want the best for America make me believe he is here not for the good of America but for alterior motives.
You're just a GOP dupe -- that's it.
As Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Roosevelt prepared for and advocated war with Spain in 1898. He organized and helped command the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment — the Rough Riders — during the Spanish-American War. Returning to New York as a war hero, he was elected governor. An avid writer, his 35 books include works on outdoor life, natural history, the American frontier, political history, naval history, and his autobiography
(McCain never ORGANIZED OR COMMANDED anyone. He was a renown class clown, who killed mates playing around, didn't finish flight classes and got shot down and caught. Now we applaud him for serving, but that's it)
He is the youngest person to become President.[4] He was a Progressive reformer who sought to move the dominant Republican Party into the Progressive camp. He distrusted wealthy businessmen and dissolved forty monopolistic corporations as a "trust buster". He was clear, however, to show he did not disagree with trusts and capitalism in principle but was only against corrupt, illegal practices. His "Square Deal" promised a fair shake for both the average citizen (through regulation of railroad rates and pure food and drugs) and the businessmen. He was the first U.S. president to call for universal health care and national health insurance.[5][6] As an outdoorsman, he promoted the conservation movement, emphasizing efficient use of natural resources. After 1906 he attacked big business and suggested the courts were biased against labor unions.
(McCain/Palin is along with Bush, Cheny, Halliburton etc., Big Businesses who pad each other pockets. He has no concept of universal health care, nation health insurance but instead wants to privatize. McCain nor Palin attacks bug business or the courts on behalf of labor unions... the avg. worker)
One Party, Has Obama ever served anything other than his own ego? I haven't gotten any proof of any great Accomplishments this man has. McCain on the other hand has spent his whole life serving America, and its people regardless of popularity. Have you ever served your country in any fashion, or are you one who sits and criticizes those who do?
I serve my country every day by being an upright citizen and helping my neighbors around me. And I live in a neighborhood with many many elderly people. During 9-11, I volunteered to helpa lot of people find places to live because they didn't live in NYC like I did and couldn't get home. I have donated to many foundations. I do not have to join the military to serve my country. This year I am volunteering to help register voters.
My father has served and I currently have a brother is currently in the Army. His profession is in Navel ship engineering. And as many times as the Gov't has mistreated me, I still due my duty for the people of the country because America is nothing without its people.
I don't believe in this war. I am 100% against it because it is happening for the wrong reasons. The surge isn't working (Iraq is not closer to forming Gov't, which was its purpose, despite the attempt to make people believe it is) and I'm tired of seeing people's family members die for no reason and do not want to see my own die either. There were no weapons of mass destruction and Bin Laden is in a different country.
Furthermore, all candidates are in position where scrutinizing is necessary in order to make the right choice for the country, not any particular party. But I'm not going to sit here and here what a great leader McCain is and he hasn't lead anything on any level. Palin is relate-able, but her foreign experience is saying Alaska is close to Russia. The fact is I am serving my country right now by not standing by while people support an underhanded campaign. America should stand for integrity.
As for Obama, here are some.
Worked for $13,000 / year helping inner city Chicago poor.
Registered 150,000 people to vote. Graduated first black
president of Harvard Law Review, passed over 600 high money

taped passed Senate 58-0, signed to law by governor who first
opposed Obama's bill. Sponsored bill probing police profiling.
Obama opposed Iraq war publically, long before the invasion.
Accurately depicted it as undetermined length, undetermined
cost, undetermined objective, resulting as civil war. Same
assessment Bush Sr. & Dick Cheney both gave in early 90's.
Federal senate :
Worked with republican senator Lugar to expand and author
program to locate & dismantle stray Russian WMD's left over
from the cold war after the disbanding of the USSR.

Obama cosponsored Secure Orderly Immigration Act by John
McCain. Passed 62-36. Makes undocumented persons who
have been here 5+ years only allowed to stay and apply for
citizenship, if pay back taxes, learn English and no criminal
record. 2 million undocumented persons who have been in the
United States for less than two years would be ordered home.
Called for increased fuel efficiency standards (3% / year)
I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this straight.....
* If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you're "exotic, different."
* Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, a quintessential American story.
* If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.
* Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a maverick.
* Graduate from Harvard law School and you are unstable.
* Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, you're well grounded.
* If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer, become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate's Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you don't have any real leadership experience.
* If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the country's second highest ranking executive.
* If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you're not a real Christian.
* If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you're a Christian.
* If you teach teach children about sexual predators, you are irresponsible and eroding the fiber of society.
* If, while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state's school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you're very responsible.
* If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigious law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family's values don't represent America 's.
* If you're husband is nicknamed "First Dude", with at least one DWI conviction and no college education, who didn't register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that hates America and advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family is extremely admirable.
OK, much clearer now.
I'm advocate for this post.
There is a big myth out there that most Alaskans are Palin fans, and that this has intensified because she was picked as the VP nominee.
KUDO-AM Talk Radio 1080 in Anchorage is currently running an online poll. The question is simple.
'Is Sarah Palin Ready to be Vice President?' (not President)
Results: 86% of voters are saying NO. Even if a lot of the participants are Dem or liberal, this is pretty frickin bad in your home state. When Palin landed in Anchorage, the crowd that greeted her was the same size as the Alaskans for Obama crowd, but they kept the Obama supporters across the road.
Here's the problem - Alaskans are getting hip to Palin, and they really got angry when Palin tried to end-around the Troopergate investigation. (see below*) In a state like Alaska, with a mere 670,000 residents, it doesn't take long for people to turn on you like a pack of wolves.
(*Palin filed an ethics complaint against HERSELF last week in the Troopergate matter. By doing this, she was trying to move the investigation from the hands of the Alaskan Legislature over to what's called the Personnel Board. The Personnel Board are three political appointees - all selected by the Governor of Alaska. Palin appointed one of them personally after taking office. The other two she re-certified. Nice being judged by people who owe you their livlihood. The Legislature isn't buying it, and Alaskans are pissed off...)
"... increase sales tax and also cut social security and medicare benefits ..."
Sales tax are state and local only, no federal.
Social Security and Medicare are entitlement programs and these benefits did not change.
