Forum sells 'Obama Waffles' with racial stereotype

advertisement

Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.

The box was meant as political satire, said Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, two writers from Franklin, Tenn., who created the mix. They sold it for $10 a box from a rented booth at the summit sponsored by the lobbying arm of the Family Research Council.

David Nammo, executive director of the lobbying group FRC Action, said summit organizers were told the boxes were a parody of Obama's policy positions but had not examined them closely.

Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

While Obama Waffles takes aim at Obama's politics by poking fun at his public remarks and positions on issues, it also plays off the old image of the pancake-mix icon Aunt Jemima, which has been widely criticized as a demeaning stereotype. Obama is portrayed with popping eyes and big, thick lips as he stares at a plate of waffles and smiles broadly.

Placing Obama in Arab-like headdress recalls the false rumor that he is a follower of Islam, though he is actually a Christian.

On the back of the box, Obama is depicted in stereotypical Mexican dress, including a sombrero, above a recipe for "Open Border Fiesta Waffles" that says it can serve "4 or more illegal aliens." The recipe includes a tip: "While waiting for these zesty treats to invade your home, why not learn a foreign language?"

The novelty item also takes shots at 2004 Democratic nominee John Kerry, Obama's wife, Michelle, and Obama's former pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

The Obama campaign declined to comment.

Wearing white chef's aprons, Whitlock and DeMoss were doing a brisk business at noon Saturday selling the waffle mix to people crowded around their booth. Two pyramids of waffle mix boxes stood several feet high on the booth's table.

"It's the ultimate political souvenir," DeMoss told a customer.

Asked if he considered the pictures of Obama on the box to be racial stereotypes, Whitlock said: "We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's — there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market. So we've taken that model and, using political satire, have highlighted his policies, his position changes."

The socially conservative public policy groups American Values and Focus on the Family Action co-sponsored the summit.

Obama may have declined to comment but I won't. Who designed these waffles, who approved of them being sold at this forum and who bought them? Like John McCain says we need to know their names and make them famous. I saw where the article says Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich were there speaking and I don't want to assume that they knew what all was being sold there but somebody needs to find out who the racist idiot was who came up with this one. Conservatives are crying sexism when they are over their being racist. This is too much.

There's their names it was clearly listed in the article. Nobody had to approve the sale as these guys just rented a booth there. But it does seem that someone should have been more careful in reviewing the products the vendors would carry. Hard to believe but I just checked and they actually have a website selling these. The link is to their contact page if anyone wants to complain directly to the makers.

I don't think given the drawing of Kerry as well that it was intended as a racist thing but very poor taste in "satire".

Amused in VA you are right about their names being in the article. I noticed the names after I reread the article for the fifth time I was so angry it all just didn't compute. I had left this seed and actually went to www.obamawaffles.com and emailed these people. I am so angry. Putting John Kerry on their didn't make me feel any better. They mocked the Islamic faith, blacks and people of Mexican descent. You know I don't want to hear not one more conservative say nothing about sexism cause this was over the top. No one needs to pretend this is the first time something racist has come out of the Republican party. Remember this summer when they were selling the Obama monkey, or when they made jokes about Obama's lips, or when they called Michelle Obama, Barack's baby momma. Now I know they say don't play the race card but I just want to say don't try to tell me what I saw when I went to www.obamawaffles.com and they had Michelle Obama looking crazy, Barack looking like a buffoon and read those jokes about Mexicans and the Islamic faith.

The True American values and beliefs are surfacing. Racism and Sexism will prevail against what is best for all Americans. I hate to say this, MCain-Palin will win based upon what I'm reading in the press, on the news, what a multitude of the intellect (or lack of) that I'm seeing on the blogs I read. I'm afraid to say, "we will experience further decline in this great country of ours. Ovaries and the under educated will prevail. Please, show me I'm wrong on November 5th. Show the world we are a muture, intellectual population who knows when we are being led into the ditch of the world.

Americans will get the leadership they want, but may not deserve. And all the world will suffer just like we (the world) has under the current administration.

Renata I hope you didn't take what I said as condoning these guys, I've just noticed that in the name of "satire" drawings like that are far too common. These guys may very well be racist idiots, or they may just be cartoonists with no sense of dignity. I personally think what they did was in very bad taste but am reluctant to jump on these themes of racism or sexism too quickly. I tend to think that just because of the nature of this campaign people are more sensitive to racial or sexual overtones, than what would be normally accepted.

They are trying to cover it up. It was indeed a caricature. Everyone exaggerates things in cartoon form. But anyone who has seen photos of Obama can tell that the man is a thin-lipped Black man. He does not have big juicy lips. He also has a thin nose.

So really, what the hell? They basically redid Aunt Jemima Waffle Mix and they know it. Family values my ass. Apparently these people want to teach their children that under-appreciating and over-mocking others' cultures is a good idea. The Values Party can keep it.

Katlin,

Obama never said that you should have to learn a foreign language, but he said more Americans should. Its a fact that America is changing, demographically and in terms of language. The Founding Fathers never set an 'official' language. They were content to let English be the 'De Facto' language of America. Btw, for your information there were many communities in America that didn't speak English for a time. They eventually did learn. In fact our constitution was also published in German as well as English.

As for learning a foreign language. I want to. Hell I speak a fair bit of Japanese, some Korean and a little bit of Spanish. More people should learn a language. It helps you to open your mind to other ways of thinking. However, if you don't because you are narrow minded then you make your world a smaller, more ignorant place and that's a shame.

Why is anyone surprised by the racism of Dobson's "values folks". I am sick of people who call themselves Christians while adhering to racist dogma. . . and they do it while looking at you with their holier than thou attitude. We truly are a sick country in need of a major change and I'm not just talking about the economy, energy, military issues, . . .

By the way. Forty-eight years ago my grandfather got me a summer job as a debit agent with the life insurance company he worked for. My job was to collect weekly and monthly policy premiums on the debit routes of agents who were on vacation or out sick. Believe me, I had to be able to speak a little Italian, a little Polish and a little Slovakian if I was going to be able to talk with the (mostly) women who answered the door. It was fun trying to get the accent right and some of the older folks got a kick out of trying to teach "the insurance kid" a little more of their language as the summer wore on. It's a shame that their children and grandchildren don't remember what their first and second generation immigrant families went through not that many years ago.

Another by the way. Jews and blacks couldn't get life insurance from that company in 1960! Too many among us believe that they shouldn't be allowed to be president in 2009.

I expect nothing less from the far right conservative base. They get all but hurt if you suggest they have an issue with race but there actions speak louder then words. Speaking of words I'm glad most of them keep their talk to themselves or in their groups because if I ever heard someone make a comment like that in front of my they would get a thorough tongue lashing that's for sure. The people who bought the product should be truely ashamed of themselves. How dare the republicans say that race is not an issue and that Obama is bringing it up on his own.

We should ALL be angry! Racism (disguised as "satire" or not) makes this country weak.

The Republican Party promotes racist policy. Republicans vote for the Republican Party. Do the math.

Of course, this isn't to say that there aren't plenty of privileged white liberals that don't understand their own racism.

But that's the problem. Most racists don't realize that they're racist, and will flip out like a minority in the face of a racial epithet if you call them out on it. As a white person, I'm frequently amused and/or dumbfounded by the general stupidity of white people on matters of race.

Amused inVA

The article said the product had been on sale since Thursday, there was a large crowd at the booth when it was finally closed down. I think it would be a safe assumption to believe that the attendees at the conference were primarily republicans and put on by a staunch republican group. Two of the speakers were influential republicans.

The republican party does not promote a racist policy. But the fact is in this situation a firm response from the McCain camp could do no harm, without one the left has a foot to stand on in bashing the brand, because of a group of people that IMO understood what they were doing and it wasn't satire.. Like it or not there is prejudice in this country, and if the two people are from Franklin, Tn they understand racism.

"We had some people mention that to us, but you think of Newman's Own or Emeril's — there are tons and tons of personality-branded food products on the market.

Those are items marketed by the individuals involved, is Obama receiveing royalties. Sounds like someone that knew excatly what they were doing and are proud of it.

The republicans were quick to label Obama sexist, time to step up and stop this type of behavior and denounce any and all that were involved.

If the KKK promotes racism, and white people join the KKK, then those white people that support the KKK support racism. I didn't say white people, I said voters that support those that perpetuate racism are, by supporting the racists, supporting racism. Pay attention.

-the GOP disenfranchises black voters, while courting the votes of racists by preying on their fears and using subtle buzz-words like "states rights" that evoke the history of Jim Crow south
-No Child Left Behind ignores preexisting racial disparities, puts unrealistic expectations and time limits on already underfunded schools in lower class areas (with a disproportionate racial ratio), then punishes them for not magically overcoming years of socioeconomic disenfranchisement
-cutting social programs instead of reforming them to be more effective / less divisive effectively punishes the poor, which are disproportionately black, in such a manner that, again, ignores years of long-standing socioeconomic factors
-their coddling of the upper class, in tangent with their indifference to the lower class (reflected in policy, not rhetoric)
-the GOP promotes policies that contribute to the economic disenfranchising of the Mexican lower class, which prompts many of them to come here, where they will be hired / underpaid / harassed / abused / threatened / arrested / blamed for all of our problems. The path to citizenship is made far more difficult by the GOP.

This isn't to say that the Democrats haven't been racist, nor do I mean to imply that they don't contribute to systemic racism now, but the GOP is notoriously worse. Why else were the same couple of minorities shown over and over at the RNC? Why else would the GOP court between 9% and 11% of the black vote?

I don't think that all GOP voters are aware of these racist policies, but voting racist politicians into positions of power is directly contributing to systemic racism.

subtle buzz-words like "states rights"

States rights is not a subtle buzzword it is a principle of the US Constitution. The Constitution grants specific powers to the federal government and reserves any power not specifically granted to to the federal government exclusively to the states. Each state is individually responsible for the welfare of it's citizens in things such as roads, schools, fire departments, police, and so on.

No Child Left Behind ignores preexisting racial disparities

Having spoke to several school administrators about this program I would respectfully disagree with this statement. The main complaint I have heard is that special education students were not granted an exemption and therefore are expected to perform at the same level as those without special ed needs. Unless your implying that race alone creates an imbalance in the ability to learn then this is a flawed premise. Economic disparity has nothing to do with ability to learn.

On the other things you try to point out such as "cutting social programs" it would be useful to cite something specific. It's hard to effectively discuss a generality that could apply to virtually any government program. There are many excellent programs designed specifically to help the under privileged and these are supported by both parties for example head start and WIC. Head Start has been affirmed into the Republican national platform this year.

Sorry AmusedinVa I think I have to respectfully disagree. Economic disparity plays a very big role in the quality of education, the ability for students to study, especially in the case where parents of a home are already on the welfare program.

The reason economic disparity plays a big role is simple. Public schools get their funding through taxes. The poorer the area the less revenue that is taken in by the state. The direct correlation then affects the quality of text books, teachers, extra curricular activities, so on and so forth. When you have a group of people crying out for lower taxes this byproduct effects all services. Since the Republican party takes this stance rather religiously, this is where African Americans feel validated not to vote for that party.

This is something that may vary from state to state and may be why we see things differently. Speaking for VA which is the only state system I fully know about. All the schools here are essentially funded locally and the state supplements the poorer districts with additional funds. The next county west of mine has double our unemployment rate and far more welfare but it's students perform the same or better than the wealthier areas. And the schools in the northern part of the state with large minority populations actually outperform the state as a whole.

When Governor Mark Warner who I'm sure you saw at the DNC signed the one billion dollar tax increase package that went to schools and roads, it was passed through a republican controlled state house and senate. We don't oppose higher taxes that are needed, we oppose wasteful spending and raising taxes to promote it.

Amused I know VA VERY VERY WELL... That northern part of the state, known as Northern VA is the furthest thing from poor. Yes NoVa has a lot of minorities but that area is full of senators and their children. The amount of money NoVa gets is insane. If you were from another state I may have let you slide, but since I know it as well as I do I know exactly what areas have money and which ones don't even after redistribution of money from educational funds.

I would never claim that NOVA was in any way poor. Just that there are large minority populations there. I'm in SW VA and while my county is far from poor there are several rural counties that are in the region. And probably even worse in south side toward Danville, they've been hit devastatingly hard economically. But my point was more about how the state helps to equalize funding between the poorer and wealthier school districts. It's really odd but as an example Roanoke city actually spends more on teacher salaries and other school related funding than several surrounding areas, and yet they have lower test scores and higher dropout rates than the area in general.

I should ask BTW since your familiar with NOVA are you in VA or MD?

IF you support a party who are known for racism, then you agree with your party. I don't understand how so many republicans are so "appalled" but won't send a message to their party that they refuse to stand with racism because then that means this country is divided.

You cannot support something you disagree with. If you try and eliminate the racism and focus on the issues, you still support a racist party. And that party will not outright say we're racist, but they will put policies in affect that will affect those that they hate.

If you are not racist and are republican, then what message, in our democracy are you going to show, to prove you will not stand for it?

You might start by looking at my post in #22.3 about our last convention. It might also be useful to quote this from our website which is the second line of our republican creed.

I BELIEVE in equal rights, equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race, creed, sex, age or disability.

      AmusedinVa,

My point is the Montgomery Republicans are racist if you all pick a racist candidate. I'm glad and I know not all republicans are racist. But would you continue to ignore that racism is a fundamental wrong that will continue to weaken this Nation? Do you know with all the racism Bush and company has shown over the years, African Americans and other minorities will not, should not and won't ever support him as President. He doesn't get the respect and doesn't deserve it. A Nation that is divided....

Republicans do not have to change parties, but you don't have to vote for a racist, just because he/she is in your party. When you do not vote for them, you send a message it won't be tolerated. Also, that is how you clean and rid your party from those that degrade this great country by continuing to move backwards instead of forward.

If you support a racist, then you support racism. Just as if you support The Red Cross, you support the help for those who are in desperate need. If you see any other logic to this simple equation, please enlighten me.

I don't know but my assumption would be that these guys were not Christians. Now that we know about their website and that they own pizza shops, it's a safe bet these two are just business guys trying to turn a fast buck without any moral idea of what they are doing.

Republicans do not have to change parties, but you don't have to vote for a racist

Actually if you look back at some of the races that have been run in the last couple of decades, you'll notice that if we don't like the one running, many republicans will just stay home. It might be worth noting just for my area, that our party has run the only black candidate for senate in recent VA history. At this years conventions we removed the state director, replaced most of the state committee, replaced the district director, and most of the district committee. We also elected a new local chairwoman. There's plenty of racism in society in general, we all know that. But within the party we do our best to control and eliminate such things.

As far as Bush and a few others from DC go we have actually decided locally to disown them. They are not considered by our district to be true republicans, and they have done tremendous harm to the party image.

But that's the problem. Most racists don't realize that they're racist, and will flip out like a minority in the face of a racial epithet if you call them out on it. As a white person, I'm frequently amused and/or dumbfounded by the general stupidity of white people on matters of race.

I'm frequently dumbfounded at how often the charge of racism is leveled without any substantiation or any objective criteria for a determination of whether something is racist.

Wow. I wasn't trying to make you agree with me. Just see the validity of the other side. You seem incapable of understanding how someone could be offended. That's frankly illogical.

Also, those people are usually Muslim but sometimes other religions as well. The point is, Obama doesn't wear a headdress and putting him on a box of anything is insulting to both him and the people who do wear a headdress. Does that make sense to you?

As far as the turban, the radicals on the right have in fact defined anything resembling Muslim/Arab as negative and anti-American (that's called racism). Thus, when they associate such things with Obama, the connection they are trying to make is clear.

Because you're saying absurd things that only an uninformed white person would say.

NEWSFLASH: You can be ANY race and be a racist.

Incorrect. Anybody can be prejudiced. Racism is not prejudice. Racism is prejudice on the part of the dominant ethnic group. The government / mainstream media / Corporate America is disproportionately upper class white men. Sure, poor white people get screwed by the mostly white ruling class, but they get certain privileges that go largely unnoticed because it's just a part of their daily lives. A gay middle-eastern immigrant can be prejudiced, but only white people can be racist.

This, of course, is limited to the racial discourse in the United States. Racism exists elsewhere, but we're talking about the United States.

It seems that when the race card keeps getting played and the racial stereotypes keep getting exposed, it's always at a Republican event. Are all Republicans racist? No. Are all racists Republican? No.

But I do know that I'd do better taking my racial and religious caricatures to a Republican event to sell rather than anywhere else... except maybe a Klan meeting.

Are all Republicans racist? No. Are all racists Republican? No.

That's from my comment you just responded to. The two following are from the article I assume you didn't actually read.

Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.
Republican Party stalwarts Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney were among speakers at the forum, which officials said drew 2,100 activists from 44 states.

Sounds like a Republican event to me.

Nobody republican or otherwise is suckering in racists. Let's just be honest if someone is a racist then they will vote against whoever they oppose. It has nothing to do with political party or being lured in. I'm sure there were quite a few racists who voted in the democratic primary, but I don't think Hillary was trying to sucker them in. These people just follow their own sick little minds and will do as they please without any prodding from either side.

A Hillary supporter who says they will vote for McCain is called a racist. Racist is being used towards Republicans as a general rule. The race card was used in the Democratic primaries.

I would love to stop calling people racist. But when I am presented with a picture of a man with big juicy lips and a large nose when he doesn't have those characteristics, followed by him in a sombrero when he is not of Hispanic descent, followed by him in a turban when is is neither Arabic or Muslim. I get offended.

You want me to stop calling people racists? You're gonna have to wait until people stop being racist.

I for one think racism, sexism, and age-ism has been injected into this race. The only one who hasn't denied those three proponents is Obama. He's never said, "no one's being sexist towards Hillary but they are being racist towards me." He's said that all three exist and are bad. McCain has trie to exclude the existence of the other two, as has Clinton. What's that about?

Simply voting for McCain (or Obama) doesn't make you a racist unless your only reason for supporting either candidate is the color of their skin.

However, I would argue that if you vote for McCain and make less than a few million per year or only have investment income and not a real job, then you are an idiot.

Look as a moderate, I'd just like to say that all the FAR RIGHT and FAR LEFT do is consume alot of wasted energy arguing that they are better or worse than the other.

It is why we dont have elections based on issues.

If we did, there are things on BOTH candidates on BOTH sides that would make each of them cringe.

It is the kind of thing you would expect at a conservative forum and its the kind of outrage I expect from the far left

We really dont have good choices this year!

That's just not true. Obama has been talking about the issues. If you look at everytime CNN reports on an ad he runs. It's usually a response ad to come cockamamie attack from the McCain camp coupled with a positive ad about Obama's plans for the economy, or education, or energy, or domestic and foreign policy. I've seen several of the commercials. CNN.com can also point you to at least 15.

In the big scheme of things, this "joke" is a small and insignficant effort, even if it is in poor taste. These kind of gimmicks will appeal to the hard-core right-wing folks who don't have a chance of seeing Obama in anywhere near an unbiased light anyway.

              Obama spokseman Bill Burton says:

We will take no lectures from John McCain who is cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern Presidential campaign history.

His discredited ads with disgusting lies are running all over the country today.

He runs a campaign not worthy of the office his is seeking.

I see this type of graphic propaganda as just another extension of the same racist ignorance the Republican's have been doing for more than a decade on talk radio and cable news.

The way I see it Liberals need to get in the game as well.

we need republicans who don't feel this way to start and speak the heck up. this stuff is really getting out of hand and being sold and these republicans events. these people have their own web site selling this junk. the republican politicians will make excuses for these people. watch what i say. the media will not cover this story because they are afraid too. as an independant voter this stuff is very disgusting. this is why i have lost respect for the republican party. SHAME ON THESE PEOPLE. "ENOUGH IS ENOUGH".

The Republicans aren't going to say anything because they don't care. But let someone make a cartoon or cereal box showing Palin in her underwear and they say it's sexist. This is the way these people think and do business. They say they know nothing about it, but we all know that's not true because they move in the same circles. They knew and they will use these type of people to do their dirty work so that we don't think it's really them that's doing it. I laugh when I know they really think we're so stupid that we can't see right through them.

Shawn this is where the oversimplification is coming in. This group had republican guest speakers, and they probably are all republicans there, but this was not a republican party sponsored or endorsed event. Too many people are trying to equate the parties themselves to the fringe elements on both sides. I've never seen anything like this at any official party sanctioned event before. I don't believe that these groups speak for my party any more than I would believe the far left liberals represent the majority of democrats.

You mean like at the official GOP Texas Convention where they sold buttons saying, "If Obama is President..will we still call it the White House?"

I was not aware of such an incident. The VA GOP would not condone such a practice but I can't honestly say what the sentiment might be in TX as I have never been there or met any of their delegates. There was a guy that came to one of the conventions I attended that was selling buttons and he had some of them. He was politely asked to leave and refrain from selling his trash there. I don't know what the instance was in TX but if it was similar to what I saw, then the guy I refer too was not a party delegate just some peddler trying to move his junk at a big gathering.

I see your point and don't disagree with the fact in regard to this years race. But you probably found the same peddlers selling similar if not identical buttons at the Hillary rallies too. The sad thing about these people ( racists that is ) is that they will show up anywhere where there's opposition to whomever they are racist toward. Like some other people have mentioned if Obama was the republican nominee you'd see these things being sold at democratic rallies.

About the only real thing we can do is send them on their way and make sure they know they are not welcome.

Only because all of the white power groups would be forced to leave their party of choice. I still think the dems are far more likely to "take care of" anyone who tried to start that stuff.

Everyone that is living and breathing should be ashamed of this nonsense...whether you view it as "racist' or not, it is a nasty, hateful depiction of a United States Senator who, just as McCain should be respected, Senator Obama should be also. Whether you agreed or disagree with his politics, no one has the right to photo-slander this man's image or reputation. This election season has shown that BOTH political parties have very serious issues with RACE and GENDER......neither party is issue free....

It's funny that I live in Mexico and have a plaster statuette of a Mexican taking a siesta, while leaning against a cactus. His sombrero covers his face and a jug of tequila is by his side. I bought it from a Mexican and it also made here. I'm sick and tired of people who can't have fun anymore. 1) McCain laughing as a woman asks"how do we beat the @!$%#" and he says "excellent question" (referring to SENATOR Hillary Clinton)
                      2) Tucker Carlson saying "everytime she speaks, I cross my legs" Again referring to SENATOR Hillary Clinton
                      3) Nutcrackers with the likeness of SENATOR Hillary Clinton

AND YET - Noone can say anything about the GEEZER John McCain or the 'done nothing, ignoramus Sara Palin - selected to garner the boob and ovary group'

Between Obama and Hillary they received over 36 Million votes, John McCain 10 Million and Sara Palin exactly 1. From listening to a 38 minute speech that is filled with lies and half truths the robots are chanting her name.....SCARY
