Palin won't meet with 'Troopergate' investigator

advertisement

ANCHORAGE — A campaign spokesman says Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin won't speak with an investigator hired by lawmakers to look into the firing of her public safety commissioner.

McCain campaign spokesman Ed O'Callaghan told a news conference Monday that the governor, the Republican nominee for vice president, will not cooperate as long as the investigation "remains tainted." He said he doesn't know whether Palin's husband would challenge a subpoena issued to compel his cooperation.

The campaign insists the investigation has been hijacked by Democrats. It says it can prove Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan was fired because of insubordination on budget issues — not because he refused to fire a state trooper who had divorced Palin's sister.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

They release some emails, but only ones that support their position. How about releasing ALL the pertinent emails? Why not try a little honesty for a change?

Unfortunately until WE THE PEOPLE tell our elected officials we expect, NO WE DEMAND they are held accountable for their actions this will continue.

The polls are too close for McAilin to throw the dice on her cooperating with the investigation. If the polls were showing 35 to 55 he would have no other choice but to try and clear her "officially" of any wrong doing because at that point he would have nothing to lose. Until and unless that happens in the polls he will continue to run his campaign exactly as it is being run right now. It is effective for the Lemming er I mean Republican party.

Since winning is more important to him than the future of the country our only hope is that Palin will be a dismal failure in the debates (which is not encouraging because her followers obviously are very forgiving always looking for the excuse and embracing her) or one of the alternative negative and detrimental facts finally is taken seriously.

Unfortunately, WE THE PEOPLE are too stuck on wanting a candidate they can have a drink with to actually want a campaign of substance. I am pulling my hair out trying to figure out how the heck the "the lipstick" thing caught on. How about the celebrity one? Why is it that the lawmakers and elected officials can simply refuse to testify in an investigation? If you or I decided, well its not in my best interest to testify so I refuse, they would be hauling our butts off to jail for contempt.

{Official Server arrives with subpoena}>"Ms. OKC, Dem I have a subpoena for you."
{I respond}>"Oh! Testifying is not in my own best interest, just tell the investigator I refuse."

Your comment reminded me so very much of an McCain's interview or should I say EVERY interview he gives, instead of dealing with the question at hand with a clear answer, he divert to what is wrong with Obama.

Stick to the point, but if we must go there. Neither Obama nor his running mate Biden are under investigation and refusing to answer! Neither one of them would dare to think that they have overcome this race to the point that they would not have to answer if they were! Only McCain in his world of the rich and famous can think that he could spring a complete unknown on America carrying a messy pile of baggage and say to hell with what you what to know about my mate just vote us in and you will find out later when we decide to inform you or she screws up you world and you find out the hard way!

I couldn't care less about this guy. The investigation has nothing to do with this lowlife. What is important is the fact that the person fired was Walt Monegan (not her brother-in-law.) The investigation is about whether or not Walt Monegan was fired because he did not fire the brother-in-law. It is about abuse of power and political retribution.

What I wonder is did you not bother to read the story above before you started commenting or are you aware of what the investigation is actually about and just trying to obscure the issue?

Not only that, she was warned by a judge to stop going after the trooper. The trooper in question was already sanctioned for his conduct, whether it was just or not is not the question, the point is she tried to bypass the judge's order and tried to push her personal vendetta. When the commissioner wouldn't fold, she forced him to resign.

Obama wants to be President of the Greatest Country in the World. He blames the Republicans for the financial difficulties we are going through right now. As a Senator of the majority party what did he do pre-empt the F and F disaster? He hires the people who created the problem as his key political and economic advisers. Where is the integrity in our elected officials there? I have not heard Obama disclose this fact.

If these accusations of abuse of power by Palin are substantiated, McCain supporters suffer the consequences.

The biased press will search hi an lo, attempting to dredge up any derogatory information against the bottom of the Republican Ticket, yet ignore major discrepencies in judgement and policy at the Top of the Democrat Ticket. IE Tony Rezko, Bill Ayers and of course the Fannie Mae advisers.

The Republicans ARE to blame for much of our woes today due to inaction and flawed tax policies. The class divide is grotesque in this country and it's time for another face, another party to take charge and clean up the mess.

They can't answer for the last 8 years so they try to blame Obama. They bring up everything under the sun, that has nothing to do with politics. By your standards Obama could have had a 3rd grade class mate that turned out to be a serial killer and you would somehow connect him to his campaign. Just because you have met someone doesn't make them connected to you in a close capacity no matter how bad you want it to. What this story is about is something directly that she is accused of while in office and as an elected official. If this was Obama the right would be going nuts and somehow you would be demanding that Obama testify.

    18zulu,

Please explain to me how it is the Democratic party is responsible for the current financial and economic woes of the United States of America. While it is a fact that the Democrats held a slim majority in the legislative branch for the past two years, it is significant to note that the majority was a SLIM majority. The democrats attempted, at no avail, to pass several pieces of legislation when all the while Bush was vowing to, and did, veto whatever came across his desk that was passed by this democratic house. With the narrow margin of majority they did not have the votes required to override the veto. So before anyone says this was a do nothing congress remember with Bush in the white house and the slimmest of majorities in the house, it was, once again the Republicans that put us in this mess.

I am OKC, Dem and I approve this message.

If that's the case, McCain should look first to his campaign staffers as the cause of that debacle. One of them was Fannie Mae's head of lobbying, and spread tens of millions of dollars around Washington in the form of lobbying contracts. A number of McCain staffers were on the receiving end of those contracts, collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars each from the lenders to rep their interests. And McCain's campaign manager served as president of a lobbying association that fought to protect Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae from the sort of regulation that McCain is now proposing.

Yes, I know full well the subject line.

Now, there is no proof of misconduct on Palin's part at this time. Though in your eyes she is already guilty. Just wishing it so, doesn't make it true.

The stock market and economy are in distress, yet you only see and hear what you want. Your candidate is no less corrupt than any other.

Yet, you continue to focus on a topic which has no meaning.

What I have brought up are facts not innuendos. Therefore, every topic is tied.

Furthermore, reading 'thoughtful' posts like the following, receiving positive votes proves the intelligence of the majority of the people posting on this thread.

"Not only does she remind me of Bush, now she reminds me of Cheney, too".

          aircanebliss,

The name of the person working with McCain is Phil Graham, he was a lobbyist who worked for a foreign mortgage company and on their behalf he fought to have our mortgage loans unregulated. Graham has become known as a MAJOR PLAYER in our mortgage crisis, the one our nation now faces. Phil Graham is also the man best known for saying "Americans are a bunch of whiners", or something like that! Remember him? Oh! By the way he is also the DESIGNER OF McCAIN'S ECONOMIC PLAN, THE ONE AND ONLY PLAN THAT WILL GET US OUT OF THIS MESS. YEAH RIGHT!

McCAIN IS FLAT OUT CLUELESS, HE THINKS HE HAS PULLED A FAST ONE IN SELECTING PALIN, BUT I HAVE A STRONG FEELING IT'S GOING TO BACKFIRE IN HIS FACE!

INDEPENDENT VOTER FOR OBAMA / BIDEN

YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN! YES WE CAN!!! YES WE WILL!!! YES WE WILL!!

          CHANGE WE CAN BELEIVE IN!!

          CHANGE WE NEED!!!

COME ON GUYS LET'S NOT FORGET OUR CHANTS, WE'RE STILL FIRED UP AND READY TO GO!!! YES WE CAN!!

Yeah, I was saying the same thing. I can't understand it, but my comment has been deleted. It seems that the website is his; why else would he keep advertising it? I'm not even tempted to check it out. I can tell what it's going to be about: more distortion of the truth and flat out lies. "I say thanks but no thanks" to that website.

It is my understanding that a bipartisan group called for this investigation and that the governor wants it covered by...a prosecutor that was appointed by the governor.

          Um...no.

Not cooperating will allow the investigators to pick at this scab throughout the election cycle. Not good to have your name linked with "subpoena" (or worse) over and over again. Don't think the press, so ga-ga over moose hunting, won't latch onto tales of behavior unbecoming a governor. Especially true when the campaign is at war with the media, itself.

I read something about this the other day, sorry, I can't remember the source, or I'd tell you. You can decide for yourself if it's true. She supposedly filed a lawsuit against herself for this very thing in order to take it out of the hands of the state legislature. In doing this she then gets to appoint a 3 person panel, HERSELF, to decide the issue. This also is supposedly to keep the proceedings confidential. I'll see if I can't locate that source for you.

Well subpoena to republicans has another meaning. The congress sent one to Karl Rove, look how well that turned out. He never showed up, but he's always on Fox which is, from what I understand, not far from the congress building! subpoena= shmupoena I guess.

          Dear Governor Palin,

Transparency and reform starts at home with the promise you made to fully cooperate with the trooper-gate investigation.

The American public would like to believe that someday, it will only be the George W. Bush administration that ignores subpoenas from their legislature counter-part in elected office.

They might as well put her in house arrest...not speaking to reporters unless they can control about all of it. If they are afraid of what will come out of her mouth, Lord help us if McCain gets in with his side kick. Palin is being tagged a lot of negative names, and I agree with them. But one tag she seems to be escaping is Radical. Her well documented views on abortion, Jesus coming to visit us in her lifetime, Alaska for seceding from the U.S., are they not radical?

Obama's preacher was called a radical for some of his views, but he isn't running for public office. Surely Palin has a few radical views of her own. And she is running for the second highest office in the country. She is documented as broadcasting them views.

Let's see: the Alaska legislature is controlled by Republicans. They voted for the money to hire an investigator. A bipartisan committee of five, made up of three Repubs and two Democrats voted to issue subpoenas. So the conclusion that McCain/Palin has come to is that Democrats have "hijacked" the investigation. It's very telling that they cannot even come up with a decent excuse to avoid the investigator until after the election. Is this really the best they can do? The Democrats -- who are outnumbered -- have "hijacked" the investigation?

Sarah Palin has clearly proven herself to be sn opportunistic liar. What i really can't believe are the people still standing behind her. So far EVERYTHING that she has ran on has been a LIE. What do we say about criminal who don't cooperate with the authorities...liars, guilty, hiding their crimes. WELL, what do you thin this is? She initially agreed to be cooperate and be transparent. I agree that she is completely transparent. This claim that she is going to take of the good old boys in Washington. What she really means is that she will be the waitress who will be serving those good old boys. She keeps saying that she represents the outside of Washington candidate. What she really means is , I am the same, I just have a different address.

Are we so stupid to believe that the truth can only be gained from a Republican Investigator, John McCain thinks that stupid race voting whites will go along with this crap and not want to know the real truth

You need to grow up the power of the Republican Party depends upon lies and half truths dressed up as Family Values, and the Republican party has mastered using the gullability of poor ignorant uneducated white people and their racial prejudices and bigotry. I dont think their is a stupider group of voters in America than poor whites who vote trying to keep Blacks and Mexicans down and are to stupid to realize that in order to keep someone else down you have to stay down there with them.

So, Sarah Palin wants to cry foul because she's under investigation? What a shocking development! The truth about her is seeping out of Alaska like puss from a wound and it's just as disgusting. Troopergate, censorship, distorting the record on earmarks, distorting her experiences...etc. She must be the least qualified candidate for VP ever... and that includes Quayle.

What does it say when she proudly exclaims that she's like a pitbull with lipstick? Do we really want someone who revels in being compared to a rabid/violent/uncontrollable dog (as implied by the reference) as vice president. I think I'd rather have a higher class of mammal with reasoning skills in that office when the 3:00am call arrives.

Sarah Palin: The instrument of change...The outsider from Washington..The maverick..the reformer . Well how about this point:

If a butcher lives in New York as opposed to Maine...doesn't that still make him/her a butcher? Republicans and undecided, take as much time as you need to think about this one.

Good Point. Wonder though, if Americans will vote for a President who has a VP running Mate under Investigation for Abuse of Authority? That will be a New Sad Record in American Politics.

This is a win win situation because it robs her of the reformer tag she is trying to claim, and if she does talk it shows the country how small minded and silly she and the first dude really are. Lie, stall, lie some more and stall some more and finally lie some more and call lying the truth and tell you that's change you can believe in

I just watched Rachael Madow show on MSNBC tonight with interview of Public Safety officer who was fired because he would not fire Trooper. Poor guy was left scratching his head as to why he was fired. Seems to me that I have seen just about enough of "Lawlessness of Republicans". Time to turn the page and I won't look back.

Troopers have got no cooperation as they had hoped with Palin. Sad

I also watched Rachael Madow. Good show. I had to laugh about the last segment. Apparently Bloomberg News has reported that McCain/Palin are even lying about the size of their crowds. In Fairfax County, they claimed that they had 23,000 people -- the largest crowd the campaign has had so far. They claimed that they got the number from the Fire Marshall. But the Fire Marshall said that he never gave them any such number and a local reporter estimated that there were about 8,000 people in the crowd, not 23,000. At another venue, the McCain team said they had 10,000 people, but the venue only held 3,500. Hilariuos. Is there anything they tell the truth about anymore?
