House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank, D- Mass., greeted Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke last July at a hearing on Capitol Hill.

WASHINGTON — TON -

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Wednesday evening unleashed a stinging attack on the Federal Reserve's decision to rescue the giant insurance firm American International Group Inc.

The Federal Reserve is purchasing an 80 percent stake in AIG and will lend $85 billion to AIG to avert its collapse.

Pelosi did not find fault with Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke for the action he took Tuesday night, nor did she suggest she would have preferred some alternative action.

Pelosi did not answer what she would have done had she been in Bernanke’s shoes.

But she was scathing in her criticism of Bernanke’s rationale.

She said Bernanke had told congressional leaders that action to save AIG had come partly at the behest of central bankers in Europe.

“Their economies depended on our bailing out AIG,” she said. “Why aren’t these foreign institutions participating in this bailout? Where is this money coming from?”

Pelosi sees a 'rip-off'
She denounced AIG as “a ripoff situation” and unleashed a scathing attack on Wall Street financiers.

“All these sophisticated financial instruments that these ‘geniuses’ on Wall Street have come up with brought instability to our economy,” she said with disdain.

She denounced what she called “crony capitalism” — a phrase also used by Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama in his statement on the AIG rescue.

She said a House committee will explore the question, “what is the role of the fraud and mismanagement?” in the AIG debacle.

While assailing the AIG rescue, she defended her plan to propose a $25 billion loan package for U.S. automakers.

"Clear from your mind any notion of bailout" for the auto industry, she told reporters.

Standing next to Pelosi, Financial Services Committee chairman Barney Frank, D-Mass., suggested that it is dangerous for any person to have as much power as Bernanke used Tuesday night in taking over AIG.

Too much power for Bernanke?
He called Bernanke “a responsible and thoughtful person — I have no quarrel with his personality — but no one in a democracy, unelected, should have $800 billion to dispense as he sees fit.”

Frank, who took part in a meeting Tuesday night between Bernanke and congressional leaders, said he asked the chairman if the Federal Reserve had $85 billion to invest in AIG.

Bernanke's reply, according to Frank: “We have $800 billion.”

When a financial firm in distress threatens the economy, “we may have to have some intervention,” Frank said Wednesday, “but it shouldn’t be a unilateral decision by the chairman of the Federal Reserve -- backed up by the secretary of the Treasury -- spending $800 billion.”

Pelosi linked AIG bailout directly to the November election and slammed Republican presidential candidate John McCain, not for the AIG bailout, but for his economic beliefs which, she charged, had led to the Wall Street crisis.

“The public has an important choice to make in this November election,” she said.

Speaking Wednesday morning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was not quite as harsh as Pelosi, but said members of Congress as well as Bernanke were struggling with the unprecedented situation.

“This is a new era, a new area…this is all new for everybody,”  he told reporters Wednesday morning.

“We are trying to be supportive of what took place last night,” Reid said of the AIG rescue.

Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson are “new in town and they are trying to do the best they can,” added Reid.

'We didn't agree to this'
Relaxing outside the House chamber late Tuesday night, Frank kept repeating with a mixture of amazement and amused irony, “$85 billion for AIG, $85 billion.”

One Democratic member, hard-pressed to keep up with the latest financial news, said, “Lehman?” Frank said, “No, AIG.”

And Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., military appropriations czar, said to Frank jokingly, “Now you’re talking about my kind of money.”

“We didn’t agree to this,” Frank noted to reporters. “We weren’t asked. We were told.”

A reporter asked Frank if the government purchase of AIG was similar to what socialists wanted in the 1930s — government ownership of America’s major corporations.

“It’s not as intellectually consistent as that,” Frank said, adding that the takeover was done by an administration that professes faith in free markets.

Bad economy good for Democrats?
Despite struggling to undertstand the implications of the Fed takeover of AIG, some Democrats believe the sour economy will lift their party's candidates to victory on Nov. 4.

While not all voters understand the nuances of “credit default swaps” and the collapse of Lehman Brothers, all are aware of the rising cost of gasoline.

"We don’t have the solution to everything. We don’t know exactly what to do about Wall Street and about banks, but we have within our grasp a bill (on energy) that could actually send a positive signal and I sure hope we don’t blow the opportunity," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat from the energy-producing state of Louisiana,

And, she added, “If Congress leaves here without an energy bill, it will be one of the worst examples of partisan posturing that I’ve seen in my 12 years here.”

On Tuesday night, the House, on a vote of 236 to 189, passed a bill that might lower energy prices — in theory — by allowing more offshore drilling, although Republican critics say the bill wouldn’t curb environmentalists’ lawsuits that prevent drilling.

The House bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

No party, neither Democrat nor Republican, knows what to do about the economy. They have all played a major role in bringing about what is happening now to the US economy. Whether by not doing anything or doing too much of the wrong thing.
So, it is Congress, each and every one of its members, that I hold accountable. Finger pointing is becoming a laughing joke...because in the end, it is all of them....

Pelosi is an irresponsible idiot. To allow such a large insurance company to fail would jeopardize the entire insurance industry and lead to a total meltdown of the financial sector. Let's stop playing politics with critical issues essential to the survival of our way of life. She's part of the problem because Congress has regulatory oversight responsibility over the financial markets, and these problems have developed on hers and Harry Reid's watch.

PS - Did anyone notice that Obama was the recipient of the second largest amount of contributions from the evil twins that allowed the financial mess to develop - Fannie Mae & Freddie Mac?

You are so right. Pelosi is an idiot. Check out her energy bill. I am sick of the finger pointing. We need term limits. We need real reform to limit the effects of lobbyists. We need people with ethics in our government. They come in poor and end up millionaires after years of "public service?" with a huge salary, great benefits and a retirement package that average Americans can only hope for.

Yeah. She's bragging about the House passing a Bill to allow some off-shore drilling, but doesn't mention that 90% of our off-shore oil is within 50 miles of shore - and that's still off limits in the Bill.
Nothing but lip-service, hoping nobody will notice.

John...You know that guy...the one true public servant in our government...that one guy that gets all the big questions right the first time. John...you remember...The guy that told everyone 3 years ago that congress needs to approve the 2005 housing reform act as quickly as possible:

John McCain is quoted saying to Congress:

"Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executive" And...

"I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole. I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation."

Reference:

I think we can all agree the #1 cause for the nations economic woes are centered around the housing crisis, and most recently Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. John McCain tried to warn the country 3 years ago when he was 1 of only 3 cosponsors for the 2005 housing reform bill.

This bill would likely have prevented the situation we're in today. This bill was blocked by the democratic congress along with just enough republicans, (the referenced republicans voting against this reform bill were also on the full version of the following list of lobbyist contributions. Let's see if we can see why certain people may have voted the way they did...rather than protecting the United States tax payers, as McCain urged them to do.

Keep in mind Obama has only been receiving money for 3 years, yet he has accepted the 2nd highest out of 354 lawmakers for the total amount of money received in the last 20 years: All Recipients of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac Campaign Contributions, 1989-2008

#2-Obama, Obama $126,349

#3-Kerry, John $111,000

#10-Reid, Harry $77,000

#11-Clinton, Hillary $76,050

#16-Pelosi, Nancy $56,250

(5 of the most well known liberal democrats are in the top 16 list highest paid out of 354 law makers).

References: and (plus many more if you search)

Obama also put former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson in charge of his vice presidential search.

I can see why he chose Jim Johnson, as they share many values when it comes to housing corruption. Let's not forget Barack Obama sought the financial assistance of a convicted felon from Syria (Tony Rezko) to purchase his multi million dollar mansion. In return, Obama gave $14 million of tax payer's money to Tony Rezko's company...who failed to follow through with the obligations that were supposed to come with that money...it was wasted in further realistate corruption.

Is it possible for Obama to be more in bed with the problem???

This shouldn't surprise anyone that McCain got it right, while Obama is once again on the wrong side of the problem...

...Need I bring up The Surge, where John Mccain willfully committed "political suicide" while he was quoted saying "i would rather lose an election than lose the war" when he was the lone voice supporting the surge against the overwhelming majority of democrats and republicans alike...with Obama being the front man on the pulpit persuading the masses that we could not win, we must retreat...

Surely you remember this great American Hero who strives to be the best possible public servant by pursuing bipartisan ways to reach pragmatic solutions for this countries needs, whether or not they're popular...what his donor's ask him to do, or if they're good for his career.

ICYMI: Barack Obama Fails To Take An AIG Position

"On the biggest financial issue of the day, Barack Obama would not say if he supported or opposed the government-backed rescue of insurance giant AIG." -- Fox News' Major Garrett

Fox News' "Special Report"
September 17, 2008

Fox News' Brit Hume: "The Democrat is not coming down one way or another on the AIG rescue. Correspondent Major Garrett explains why."

Fox News' Major Garrett: "On the biggest financial issue of the day, Barack Obama would not say if he supported or opposed the government-backed rescue of insurance giant AIG."

Barack Obama: "We don't know all the details of the arrangement with AIG and the Federal Reserve must ensure that plans protect the families that count on insurance."

Garrett: "Obama also wants taxpayers protected but executives and shareholders exposed but on the central question to intervene or not, Obama sidestepped. Advisers said lack of details forced caution. The larger political truth: advisors believe anxiety alone is enough to lift Obama in the polls. That is why on the trail, Obama doesn't talk about specifics of the moment but the nation's overall direction."

Pelosi is wrong on nearly every level. First, a knowledgeable Fed Chairman, along with his advisors and Fed Members, are among the few competent people in the world to make the kinds of decisions Pelosi and Barney Frank are talking about. Pelosi, Frank, and the rest of Congress sure haven't a clue. Frank's "reform" bill is a joke that seems to get funnier every day.

Everyone in the capitol markets knows and understands it is all about derivatives. But no one talks about it because there is no answer. Things will get better…sometime. But don't bet on soon. Nothing good will happen until the housing market stabilizes. And that won't be for some time as bank after bank closes.

McCain or Obama won't make a difference. They are both, after all, just politicians. What is happening is not a "policy" issue. It is a market correction to bad investments packaged and sold as great investments. There was a bubble and it popped. Nothing will improve until the correction is made. Government interference to keep the bubble inflated to any degree will only delay the completion of the correction.

Bailing out AIG was not a bubble inflator. It is simply a matter of keeping the highest priority of market maker alive so that the entire economy does not crash. It may anyway, but the Fed is making significantly better contributions than the political rhetoric from fools in Congress ever will.

One thing that hardly anyone is even pointing out is that Wall Street, like life in general, has cycles. They could no more stop this than they can stop the seasons from occurring. Wall Street is just like going to Vegas, if you can't stomach the game, then don't play. There are CD's and other safe options.

            Simplistic Reality

Pelosi is a moron. So is this latest Democrat thought up "Approval for offshore drilling" bill that just passed. Anyone with a brain cell can see what it is, for what it is. A smokescreen. The Dem's under pressure about gas prices and oil come up with a bill that is made to "look" like they are doing something and "moving forward". What a bunch of B.S. The bill as its written won't do crap. Why? Well the say you only can drill 50miles off of the coast line and then its up to the individual states involved to approve it. Of course the states won't see one dime of profit from the drilling, so what do YOU think they going to say? Also.. 18 billion barrels of prooven reserves are INSIDE the 50 mile range which is off limits with this bill. Plus it is more expensive to even produce the oil that far out as opposed to it being closer. This bill is a sham. The republicans are right in calling it just that. It will never go anywhere and they know it, all at the same time, trying to convince people and there own party that they are being the good guys and agreeing on something. Does this not concern anyone!? I'm getting so sick of hearing about these things..... it makes me wonder how anyone can be for those people and that party now days.

This is not a situation about politics. We have major issues with our economy and to make it a political issue is bad for the U.S. and all Americans. We need to find solutions. I can't stand the fact that our elected officials are making this a political issue and will end up doing nothing to fix the problem.

Bail out the banks who caused this debacle so we can save what's left of our dignity. Then immediately put in jail those who caused this crisis to everyone in America. The greedy buttholes all have a name and we can pinpoint those who did this to America. Take away the obscene profits these bastards squeezed out of us. Let us start collecting all the debt that foreign countries owe us. Stop sending our money to every country around the world to keep them our friend. Cancel NAFTA and bring our jobs back home. All trade with other countries shall be on a equal footing. Coming and going.

Dan.....you prove the great truth about this country.

People who can't balance their checkbooks, but want to comment on economic issues.

There is someone to blame, but no one wants to say it.

Backstory: In the 90's we were in an economic boom. Oil was about $20-30 a barrel, and Bill Gates was helping this country pull 2-3 TRILLLION dollars of GDP out of thin air (Does the words AOL Time-Warner mean anything to you). So then President Clinton, in a very well intentioned gesture, decided to make houses (really the ability to get a home loan) easier for the down-trodden (really just another way for Dems to buy the minority vote w/ taxpayer money) to get. He expanded a Jimmy Carter initiative to FORCE banks to have a percentage of their portfolio in the SUB-PRIME MORTGAGE market. If not, they would be HEAVILY fined by the federal government. But hey money was falling off trees in the 90's, so they didn't fight against it.......

Skip ahead to now: With the rise in Asian markets (really India and China), the fall of the Tech stocks, and people finally realizing (THANK GOD) that just because it's in CA or NY, A 2 BEDROOM HOUSE IS NOT WORTH $300,000...the economy is in a slowdown, if not a slow recession.

Well where do you think that leaves us? We, as Americans, have spent too much, and saved WAY TOO LITTLE. And you want to label the banks as greedy????

                Are you serious????????????

How many people in America have more cars than people at the house?

How many in America have 2 or more cell phones in the house because they "need" them?

How many people are spending $50 or more a month on High speed internet to read this right now?

WHY IS THE APPLE Iphone STILL SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE????

Why is the biggest selling item in America HDTVs???????????????

I have NO cell phone. I have NO HDTV. I have 1 car at my house.

I also have a 6 figure savings account....

Do I feel sorry for you???

                I'M LAUGHING AT YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. Someone please tell Senator Obama that if he wants to complain about the "Bush Economy"...try not doing it at a $26,500 A PLATE fundraiser with his "elitists" buddies. He won't look like a horses A@% that way....

Maybe Obama should donate that money to Hurricane Ike victims or better yet to those who lost jobs at Lehman Brothers, especially since Lehman Brothers gave him a big chunk of change as a donation even though they knew they were crashing and burning.

I've got a great idea. It will not only lead to a great deal of extra capital in the market, but will also leave millions of American free to pursue careers in public service: instead of bailing out ginourmous corporations, why not bail out the millions of American college graduates indebted and beholden to banks for the rest of our lives as we struggling to pay off student loans offered at usurious rates of interest. Banks will get their money and America will get workers free from worry and a life of indebtedness to the same banks that are ruining our economy. Moreover, the political party who proposes it and sees it through will get my vote!

That is a good idea. Unfortunately, the politicians view you as well as other college graduates that are in debt as inconsequential, largely because you won't be donating millions of dollars to a politician anytime soon.

Neither party may know what to do but the Republicans are at least trying to shift as much money from the middle class to the wealthy as they can. Are you all familiar with welfare for the wealthy? You are seeing it in action right now this very second.

Merle, you are blind if you think this is all REPs doing... It is obvious that both parties are just puppets to corporate america, both parties get major campaign contributions for those mortage companies that we bailed out, and from AIG. You keep dreaming one of these parties is going to take the middle class to the promise land... They keep taking us to the bank...

America99 I doubt if either party will recognize the middle class and "lead them to the promised land" but the Republicans are making no bones about shifting all wealth from the middle class to the wealthy so I think it is time to give the Democrats a chance to put their money where their mouth's are.

Merle, its not their money, it's ours, and I am tired of both parties pissing it away to make themselves richer, not to mention pay for other people's education, and people that are 4th and 5th generation welfare that do not want to work, stay in school and let the government pay for it all... I work hard for my money, and they continue to pass free trade agreements that send our jobs overseas... I am tired of giving them a chance, how much more will you take, being homeless with no job?

America99 I am also tired of the 5th generation corporate welfare companies taking my hard earned money to pay for their golfing fees and mansions. Back in my day day we all worked for a living and did not beg for welfare like I see American companies now doing.

Seriously, Pelosi needs to be re-programed so she matches her parties candidates position. we are sure Biden after saying the same thing earlier in the day went through the same re-programming also.
Less we forget the republicans, They are beyond programming so let them flay around like a beached whale. Sorry that's an insult to whales.

CSPAN seems to be the only channel with real canidates that want change, why can these other networks get on board and give us some better canidates then these same ole parties. The American people see a change in party, but no real change. DEMs have not done a thing in two years, and pretend they are not partially to blame, and continue to fund a war they said they would end once in office, and they have not attempted to put a bill forward with that in mine, not to mention they approve funding for it??? How much more does the middle class have to take from these two parties?

Frank is complicit in this whole mess caused in large part by the lack of oversight of Fannie and Freddie. There have been individuals that have been warning for YEARS that this whole financial system was a house of cards ready to fall.

My question is if a large company wanted to buy 80% of the control of A I G would they claim Anti trust but yet our goverment does it without even asking first. Then they want a broke America to filp the bill for a bad buisness practice. So is this constitutional I don't belive it is.They have complained when congress passed a bill allowing billionns to be spend for the war But no one even voted on this bailout of a company that has gotten to big for it's own good and ours too. But it's Ok the very same people that are looking for jobs (6.1% unemployment) and cannot pay their credit cards balance will cover the cost of this transaction (He He like that is going to happen) (how many trillion in credit card debt is the U.S.A. and what is the default precentage at) I for one am glad that i don't have money in the bank and/or a 401 k everyone's bound to lose it here shortly to eveyone out there the best of luck because it looks like it's too late now.

Wonder how these politicians are going to be paid "under the table" for the help they give their "butt buddies"?

But, they have to blame George again and Republicans. How did she get where she is. Just another overpaid bloviating politician that VOTERS put in office. WE NEED TO GET RID OF THESE PEOPLE. They are morons with money, which is a shame. Most of them were lawyers first and that is the biggest issue. My father once told me lawyers were blood sucking scumbags that complicate uncomplcated situations. Look at John Edwards lawyer also a liar. Obama, lawyer also a liar. I think they learn it in law school, how to lie and rip people off for their betterment!

Ouch. John Edwards was an ambulance chaser, and I guess we all got to make a living. But when he cheated on his wife, who was not yet dead by dying of cancer, well, that spoke volumes. His poor children. (McCain - not a lawyer tho' - said one of his deepest regrets was the situation with his first wife.)
Reagan was the first divorced prez, raised some eyebrows (again, not a lawyer). Clinton was the first prez to be PUBLICLY roasted for his affairs. (Lawyer)
Rather than slam lawyers (except perhaps the personal injury ones like Edwards), maybe the problem is that power corrupts. And as these twits, of either party, learn the game, it just gets worse.
After this inning is over, and it is not over yet, the economy continues to tank, there will be a hue and cry throughout the land, and perhaps this time, John Q Public will have his day. And a serious overhaul of how things are being run. Can only hope.

The Democrats were most certainly aware that this was going to happen as they were as much or more to blame than anyone else. I read above in a comment that someone was tired of Washington creating these fiasco's but could never fix them. They are not going to fix them until the American voting public makes the change for them at the voting booth. We can stop this from happening by the way we vote. Quit crying and whimpering and get educated and vote the crooked bastards out of office, it will never stop if you just keep re-electing them.

Why would you trust Obama's ability to lead is through the economic nightmare we are in?

Obama's top economic advisors have ties to Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AND Lehman Brothers -- all asked for help from the Feds recently. Also has a tie to Countrywide, who was in the news this past spring for the same reason! It has also been found that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were using irregular accounting practices to keep reporting higher profits so that Senior Executives, like Obama's economic advisors, could keep getting their ever growing bonuses.

Jim Johnson, who is currently Barack Obama's economic advisor, was not only CEO and Vice Chairman of Fannie Mae, he was also a managing director at Lehman Brothers. In addition, Jim Johnson was one of the original members of Obama's VP vetting team. Johnson also had connections to Countrywide. After being selected to be part of the VP vetting team it came out that Johnson received loans, below market rates, due to his close personal relationship with then Countrywide CEO, Angelo Mozilo. Johnson stepped down from the VP vetting team, but Obama didn't view this as important enough to stop using Johnson as a top economic advisor.

Franklin Raines was CEO of Fannie Mae 1999 to 2004. Mr. Raines also is currently Barack Obama's economic advisor and has not yet been forced to resign. He is accused by The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight (OFHEO), the regulating body of Fannie Mae, of abetting widespread accounting errors, which included the shifting of losses so senior executives, such as himself, could earn large bonuses. Raines was sued for wrongdoing but was able to settle. An editorial in The Wall Street Journal called it a "paltry settlement" which allowed Raines and the other two executives to "keep the bulk of their riches." In 2003 alone, Raines's compensation was over $20 million. [ ].

Raines *also* has ties with Countrywide. In June 2008 Wall Street Journal reported that Franklin Raines was one of several politicians who received below market rates loans at Countrywide Financial because the corporation considered the officeholders "FOA's"--"Friends of Angelo" (Countrywide Chief Executive Angelo Mozilo). He received loans for over $3 million while CEO of Fannie Mae. [ ]

Anyone else see the connections here? Anyone else snicker just a little bit when they hear Obama talking about "reforming" wall street? A good manager is not someone who has all of the knowledge to solve all of the problems, but someone who has the intelligence to surround themselves with the right people who have the extensive knowledge in certain area's. Anyone up for letting Jim Johnson, Franklin Raines and Obama back in the driver seat of the economy? Not me.

You know most of Congress has never held a real job, they are always been in as they call it public servant. They haven't done anything for me except rob me . If Congress continues to over tax the rich and Corp. we won't have any jobs left in America for Americans.. I truly believe this is what Congress wants so they can bring all their illegals in at cheaper wages and over tax corp. and owners thinking they can get even more money this way. Congress and all branches of the Government needs to be on a budget and they can't increase their spending until the American people vote on it. After all they work for us and we're their boss.

Why don't we just tax everyone at say 17%. That would be a fair and democratic thing to do. Our current progressive tax system is exactly what Karl Marx proposed for Communism.

For anyone that doesn't know, the Federal Reserve is NOT part of the government; it is a privately held corporation owned by the International Bankers. The American Taxpayers pay The Fed to print money from thin air for a substantial fee. They are also supposed to regulate markets, but in reality The Fed is a scam.

The Federal Reserve Act was enacted in 1913, in the wee hours of the morning on Christmas Eve while all but 3 congressmen were out for break, supposedly to keep the United States from having another failing economy. They have not done their job, so they need to be replaced.

The Constitution states that only Congress can issue money. Since the Federal Reserve is a private entity and NOT a government institution, do you think they are looking out for your best interest or their own?

Three Presidents have put the International Bankers out of business Andrew Jackson ( attempted Assassination), Abraham Lincoln (Assassinated), John F. Kennedy (Assassinated). Does anyone else see a pattern?

They were the ones s who put pressure on the banks to lend money to people who weren't qualified for these loans for houses. Plus who would have taken a non-fixed mortgage. This was another form of greed thinking the interest rates were going to keep going down. Didn't anyone tell them what goes up must come down and it did. So hey Dumocrates you were behind this to keep your people dependent on your crap. This is what the Democrat's call change. Only change they understand is the little bit of change that they have let in our pockets, but I'm sure they will be back for that soon enough.
